carry on during the holidays
Tip
TRY THIS YOGA TECHNIQUE.
Close the right nostril, leaving the
left one open and inhale, then close
the left nostril and open the right, and
exhale. Continue this same pattern
on each side for eight more breaths.
Alternative Nostril Breathing almost
immediately calms down the nervous
system. It is also said to balance the
thoughts and provide clarity.
I
no to socials that will take you away
from more important commitments.
Instead, take a rain check. Or,
arrange a post-Christmas gettogether. Or simply politely decline.
Scale down your expectations. It’s
not about finding the perfect gift…or
receiving it. Or being the perfect
host. The point is to share in the fun
and good cheer. Don’t sweat the
small stuff.
4
How to manage all without losing your
cool? Try these tips:
Plan ahead. Shop early or set aside
chunks of time after work or during
the weekends to pick up presents.
If you’re hosting parties, keep your
menu simple. Involve your kids—
have them hang tinsel or help you
wrap presents for your officemates.
Start calling relatives to mobilize
them for family reunions so that
they can take care of the games
or entertainment, contribute a
dish, pick up the ice, order
extra tables and chairs,
etc.

congestion because of its maximum
decongesting action.
Escape. When the pressure starts
to get to you, let go. Find 30 minutes
of “me time” to do something that
relaxes you—go for a run, read, do
a little yoga, nap. You’ll be back in
your element in no time.
Make a Gratitude List. Writing down
or even thinking about things that
you’re grateful for switches you
from being stressed to being calmer
almost instantly.

saridon

MYTH. Cold weather increases your
chances of getting a cold. The only
thing that can cause a cold or flu is a
cold or flu virus. Getting cold and/or
wet won’t give you a cold. However, if
you are already carrying the virus in
your nose, it might allow symptoms to
develop. So, it’s common to think that
the cold weather or the rain is what
caused it.
MYTH. Antibiotics can kill the germs
that cause colds and the flu. Treating a
cold or flu with antibiotics is like using
nose drops to treat an eye infection.
That’s because antibiotics kill bacteria,
and colds and flu are caused by viruses,
a class of germs that aren’t anything like
bacteria.
MYTH. Putting on extra clothing or
covering yourself in blankets can
help you “sweat out” a cold. The cold
is caused by over 200 viruses, and it
just takes its time up to several days to
several weeks for it to get out of your
system. But if you feel more comfortable
bundled up, go ahead. It just won’t cure
your cold.
MYTH. You can catch a cold simply
by breathing the same air as a sick
person. While it’s true that cold viruses
travel through the air, especially when
a sick person coughs or sneezes, that’s
just one way. Viruses can also be
transmitted on your hands. If you touch
something that has a virus on it—such
as a phone, a toy or a friend’s hand—the
germs on your hand can enter the
body when you rub your eyes or nose,
their favorite entryways. Common cold
viruses can live for three hours on skin
or other surfaces.

The holiday Season
can be cough season
W
did You
know that...
In a 10-year study of 14,000 children
in Canada, researchers found that
maternal stress affected children’s
health, giving rise to childhood
asthma and obesity.
Parents' stress leaves mark on
DNA of children, according to
researchers at the University of
Wisconsin and the University of
British Columbia. Fathers' stress
levels also leave a mark on the
DNA of their daughters, while a
mothers' stress level affects both
boys and girls. This reinforces
other research showing that dads
who don’t participate in parenting
are likely to have daughters who
are temperamental and hit puberty
earlier.
hen you or your kids need to do
something about the coughs that
sometimes accompany a cold or the flu,
the best recourse is to consult a doctor. But, with the array of remedies in the
market, it’s best to understand what
the label in your cough treatment really
means.
salonpas
Topical analgesic with the longest-lasting
effect to relieve you from all sorts of everyday
body pains and aches.
Expectorants. These medicines work by
affecting the production and clearance of
mucus, and help bring up phlegm so that
coughing is easier.
3
Stay healthy and fit. Your home is
your gym. Resistance training? Move
furniture! Cardiovascular workout?
Run up and down the stairs. Need a
workout buddy? Walk the dog!
Suppressants. They act on the brain
to hold back the cough reflex, and are
usually used for dry coughs.
Decongestants. Designed to work by
constricting blood vessels, which shrinks
swollen membranes and allows more air
to pass through the nose.
4
Bling up! Aside from practicing
good personal hygiene, enhance
your look with affordable fashion
accessories from any tiangge.
5
Make the effort. Wears light makeup
and dress up even if it’s just to fetch
your kid from school. Looking good
makes you feel good as well.

6
Prioritize. Even if you’re a hotshot
mom in a high-powered job, that’s
not your only life. When faced with
a problem, ask yourself what your
priorities are.
4
Antihistamines. Older types of
antihistamines may make you sleepy,
thus inhibiting coughs.
As for home remedies, here’s what
experts say:
sore throats. It also makes the mouth and
throat feel cooler.
Chocolate. Yes, chocolate. An ingredient
in chocolate could help stop persistent
coughs. Researchers have discovered
that an ingredient in chocolate
suppresses a nerve activity involved in
causing coughing.
Steam. Works by making secretions
looser and easier to cough up. Can
be done with the head-over-a-bowlapproach, or by adding moisture to
air with a steam vaporizer or cool-mist
humidifier.
What to use? A Harvard University
report recommends one allergy medicine
that combine with an older antihistamine
and a decongestant.
Still unsure? Consult your doctor.

Chicken soup. A traditional
cure for the cold and coughs,
researchers say that it also acts as
an anti-inflammatory, and it speeds
up the discharge of mucus to ease the
symptoms of coughs and colds.
Be interesting. Read, have a hobby,
meet friends regularly, love your job,
do volunteer work. Being engaged
makes you more interesting, more
understanding, more accepting.
7
Cough syrups. The sweet or in some
cases bitter taste of a medicine may
trigger salivation and the secretion of
mucus.

them gently down under your chin.
Slide your hands past each other at
the front of the neck, so that each
hand is on the opposite shoulder.
Stroke gently over your shoulders,
down your arms and off at the
fingertips. Repeat as often as you
like. This hypnotic stroke can relieve
headaches and tension.
That tickle in your throat

Often, colds and flu cause sore
throats.
Other causes
• Allergies
• Mononucleosis – A virus that
spreads through saliva, which is
why it's sometimes called "kissing
disease." Mono occurs most often
in 15 to 17-year-olds. However, you
can get it at any age.
• Smoking
• Strep throat
• Tonsillitis – An infection in
the tonsils
Symptoms
• Pain or a scratchy sensation in the
throat
• Pain that worsens with swallowing
or talking
• Difficulty swallowing
• Dry throat
• Sore, swollen glands in your neck or
jaw
• Swollen, red tonsils
• White patches or pus on your tonsils
• Hoarse or muffled voice
• Refusal to eat (infants and toddlers)
Common infections causing a sore
throat may result in other accompanying
signs and symptoms:
• Fever
• Chills
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Sneezing
•
•
•
Body aches
Headache
Nausea or vomiting
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause.
Sucking on lozenges, drinking lots of
liquids and gargling may ease the pain.
Over-the-counter pain relievers can
also help, but children should not take
aspirin.
Prevention
The germs that cause viral and
bacterial infections are contagious.
Therefore, the best prevention is to
practice good hygiene. Follow these tips
and teach your child to do the same:
• Wash your hands thoroughly
and frequently, especially after
using the toilet, before eating,
and after sneezing or coughing.
• Avoid sharing food, drinking
glasses or utensils.
• Cough or sneeze into a tissue
and throw it away. When
necessary, sneeze into your
elbow.
• Use alcohol-based hand
sanitizers as an alternative to
hand washing when soap and
water aren't available.
• Avoid touching public phones
or drinking fountains with your
mouth.
• Regularly clean telephones,
TV remotes and computer
keyboards with sanitizing
cleanser. When you travel,
clean phones and remotes in
your hotel room.
• Avoid close contact with people
who are sick.
• Avoid exposure to second-hand
smoke.

A colorful baon tip. The more
colors in your kids’ baon, the healthier

yellow, apples or malunggay for green,
tomatoes for red, carrots or kamote for
orange, blueberries for blue, and duhat
or grapes for violet. Just remember:
both you and your kids should eat
something leafy and green every day.

6
Write it down. It may also reveal
a solution to your problem.
Accept things you can’t change.
You can’t control everything, so
why rage? Stuck in traffic? Listen
to your favorite music. Or if you
commute, you can read a book.

spirits.
Take a hike. The fresh air will clear

N
owadays, being healthy seems to
be a very complicated task. Our
lives have become frantic yet sedentary,
people are exercising less, eating the
wrong kind of food, and indulging in
vices like drinking and smoking.
While food remains the best source
of vitamins and minerals, the pesticides
in vegetables and growth hormones
in livestock are suspect. The average
Filipino is also unable to buy a wide
variety of food and plan his meals.
Dietary or nutritional supplements
compensate for these deficiencies.

D
r. Oz answers some quick health
questions from the readers of
Esquire Magazine.
Q: What do I need to know about my
heart at age 25, 35, 45, and 55?
A: You need to know this — and
doctors learned it only recently: The
heart muscle actually regenerates
throughout your life. We used to think
it stopped after you were grown. But
your heart will stop regenerating if you
don’t keep challenging it. So exercise.
At every age.
Q: How can I tell whether it’s just
a muscle strain or actually a torn
muscle?
A: All strains are muscle tears, and
they’re all treated the same way: ice for
24 to 72 hours, then warm compresses.
And rest.
Q: I usually treat myself when I have
the flu. What are some signs that I
should seek medical help?
A: High fever that lasts more than three
days, trouble breathing, and localized
pain. These may signal a serious
infection.
Q: What’s the best time of day to
exercise?
A: Morning. It focuses your mind, you
won’t blow it off later in the day, and
it won’t keep you up at night with
pounding adrenaline surges because
you just benched your all-time high.
Q: When I notice a new problem, how
many days should I wait for it to go
away before I talk to a doctor?
A: If you have crushing chest pain that
feels like an elephant is sitting on your
chest, maybe see a doctor, because
you’re having a heart attack. Same if
you’re passing out. But if you’ve got
diarrhea or the flu, two to three days is
very reasonable. Five to seven days for
a sprained joint.

This will prevent smaller gifts from

Steam your face. It opens your pores
and allows you to get rid of embedded
dirt. Hold your face above a pan of very
hot water for 10 to 15 minutes. Add
herbs, if you can: lemon for oily skin,
lime for sensitive and dry skin, lavender
for normal skin.
Exfoliate. After steaming, use a
washcloth or mild exfoliator and scrub
with gentle circular motions, avoiding the
eye area. Don’t exfoliate for more than 2
or 3 minutes to avoid irritating your skin.
Apply a facial mask. Choose a face
mask that suits your skin type and
apply it once or twice a week. A
brightening mask brings the glow
back to your face. Or, you may
choose firming, nourishing, purifying
and hydrating facial masks. Best
applied after steaming the face. Tip

Wear your highest

protect your feet
N
o one can persuade a woman to
give up her killer heels even if
they hurt her feet. Here, then, are tips to
protect feet, according to WebMD.com.
1
Mind the fit. For the best fit, your
feet shouldn’t slide to the front,
leaving a wide gap behind your
heel. This adds more pressure and
pain on toes. Look for narrower
styles with a snug but not tight fit.

IF YOU HAVE TO WORK
LATE, STRETCH! According
to Woman’s Day, as little as
10 minutes of activity, such as
walking or doing some stretches
at your desk or workstation, can
get your heart rate and blood
flow going. Exercise can also help
combat stress by lowering levels of
the stress hormone cortisol. Try to get
at least 10 minutes every hour, even
if it’s just taking a longer route to the
bathroom to squeeze in some brisk
walking.

protein—meat, fish, tofu, eggs, beans

and fills you up.
Happily snack. Between meals,
consider a snack that has protein,
carbs and fat for an energy boost
like peanut butter and crackers.
Not only will it prevent you from
overeating come meal time, it will
also keep you alert and energized.
4
Do good. Help a colleague even if
you’re swamped. Offer the elderly or
a family with young kids your spot
in the taxi lane. When driving, allow
pedestrians the right of way. Helping
someone or doing good releases
endorphins that last for a long time.
What you do won’t just help others,
it’s for your own well-being too.
