Introduction The headline of McKinsey & Company’s study of “Automotive suppliers: Opportunities prevail, but introduce new challenges as well,” stands out with the following statement: “Global market volume will double by 2020, up to 2 trillion Euros. Opportunities will arise especially in Asia and through new technologies. Volatility, capital requirements and skill shortages are going to be the biggest challenges” If this study is analyzed in the context of the statistics published in January 2013 by the Austrian Business Agency, who is Austria’s new company establishment consultant, and one takes into account the present structure of the Austrian automotive industry, which is set up for worldwide export, it will be clear that the Austrian automotive market is in good shape for expected competition in the future. The great diversification in product range ensures continuous expansion of the market segment “automotive made in Austria.” Some facts from 2012 23 billion Euros in sales per year get generated by 365,000 jobs in some 700 companies of the automotive sector. 7.8 billion in investments flowed into the development of the Austrian automobile industry over the last 25 years. 16,000 Euros in research per job is spent in the Austrian automotive industry annually. That is twice the industry average. The production of complete vehicles is generally viewed as niche production as compared to international standards. The two largest vehicle manufacturers are Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik AG & Co KG (vehicle engineering & contract manufacturing) and MAN Truck & Bus Austria AG (production of light and medium truck series). Rosenbauer International AG is a leading manufacturer for special vehicles (fire trucks, airport vehicles). If you include motorcycles, then KTM SPORTMOTORCYCLE GMBH should be highlighted, with a share of 8.4% of the total European market. The Austrian automotive market is a typical supplier market and can be roughly divided into the following categories: Chassis, including axles, brakes, suspension, steering, wheel suspension, wheels, shock absorbers ... Transmission and engine, including exhaust, transmissions, engines, catalytic converters, fuel ... Body, including mirrors, plates, coatings, surface engineering, pressed parts, doors ... Electrical and electronics including acoustics, lighting, cables, wires, knobs, locking mechanisms, safety electronics ... Interior including instruments, handles, rear view mirrors, mats, seat belts, seats, fabrics, linings ... ARGE Automotive Supplier Industry of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce included the following information for each sector in its brochure “Automotive Supplier Industry,” based on a study of the IWI (Institute for Industrial Research) in 2011: Chassis (25%) Engine (30%) Electrical / electronics (25%) Other parts and intermediate products for the automotive industry (29%) Additionally, almost 40% of companies are active in two or three automotive parts sectors. The vast majority of companies (66%) supplies its products mainly to OEMs (original equipment manufacturer) or directly to tier 1 companies (70%). Over 40% of companies say they supply both OEMs and Tier 1 companies. Tier 2 companies comprise 31% and the remainder is 5%. AUTOMOTIVE + MEM-SUPPLIER 4 1.1. PRODUCTION 2.35 million cars were produced in Austria since 1980. 99% export rate for cars manufactured in Austria. 23 billion Euros in sales is generated annually from the entire Austrian automotive sector. If you include the upstream and downstream sectors of the economy, it’s 100 billion Euros. MAGNA STEYR Fahrzeugtechnik AG & Co KG MAGNA STEYR Fahrzeugtechnik AG & Co KG is a subsidiary of Magna International Inc and has more than 100 years of automotive manufacturing experience. The largest proportion of vehicles for export is manufactured by MAGNA STEYR Fahrzeugtechnik AG & Co KG as the world’s leading brand-independent engineering and manufacturing partner to automotive manufacturers at the Graz site. Around 148,000 vehicles were built in 2013 in Graz, including the models Countryman, Paceman, Mercedes G and Peugeot RCZ. MAN in Austria Quote translated in English from “Standortfibel Steyr 2014 - MAN Truck & Bus Austria AG” <http://www.corporate.man.eu/man/media/de/content_medien/doc/global_corporate_website_1/unternehmen_1/produktion_mtb_1/standort_steyr/Standortfibel_Steyr_2014.pdf (5)> “MAN Truck & Bus Austria AG, based in Steyr, is the Austrian subsidiary of MAN Truck & Bus AG (MTB). Austrian automotive manufacturers can be considered niche product producers based on the quantities that get produced. Internationally renowned supplier products get produced with a high level of expertise and reliability. 99% of those products get exported. The increased expenses in research and development should be considered a well-applied investment for the future. “Cooperative research,” in other words, non-university research, plays an important role in the Austrian research landscape in addition to universities such as the Technical University of Vienna and Graz or the Johannes Kepler University of Linz. Therefore, the regional state governments support companies that do non-university research. Some examples are as follows: Upper Austrian Research GmbH < http://www.uar.at/> Upper Austrian Research GmbH is the leading organization for non-university research in Upper Austria and a key player in the research, technology and innovation policy of the federal province of Upper Austria. MEM industry in general The Austrian automotive supplier market (700 companies) is so multi-layered in each sector, that there is plenty of opportunity for competitors. The best opportunities arise when one can offer a high-tech product such as for example new surface coating, lower energy costs, new cost-effective process technology and of course the further electrification of vehicle engines. An overview of the companies who are part of the automotive supplier market with an outline of their field of business activity (drives, onboard network, vehicle manufacturing industry service, chassis, vehicle as a whole, interior, bodywork and most important parts, machinery and plants for the vehicle industry, commercial vehicles, other vehicles, other parts for the automotive industry, accessories for individualization, two-wheel vehicles) can be ordered from the Austrian Automotive Association Service GmbH. Electric mobility is the greatest challenge for the automotive industry in the next decade. Companies which participate in research and development in this field are in great need. First and foremost, it’s about bringing basic research into practical application and optimized production. Many start-up companies in the technical field have the opportunity to enter into the automotive industry often with the support of the public sector, through funding. Those young flexible companies with technological know-how have the greatest chances to be the winner in this trend environment. In other words it comes down to investing today to be among the winners in the mid-term. As already described above, the Austrian universities and research centers are to be mentioned. These are already working together with the most important companies in the automotive cluster. From this future perspective, the employment market in the automotive industry has already started to change slightly. This opens up new topics, such as “automated driving” and “electrified engines.” Essential potential is in the areas of components, traction battery, power electronics, electric motor and body. The biggest job growth is expected in the machinery and electronics industry; metal and electrical industry. Electric vehicles / Hybrid vehicles Because of the changes in the drive system of vehicles, significant changes are being made in the required technologies and production. The necessary infrastructure for the after-sales activities such as workshops, waste disposal and energy must also be provided. The change seen internationally, from conventional cars to the fuel cell electric vehicle / battery electric vehicle / plug-in hybrid electric vehicle will continue to increase over the years. It won’t be a hype trigger but it will be steadily increasing. The internal combustion engine will still be further developed, but will more and more take on the function of a “range extender.” An optimal design having few operating points would result in substantial space reduction and fuel economy. There will be a significant change in the transmission as it relates to the electrification of vehicles. The conventional highly complex multi-stage transmission will be reduced to a single-stage transmission. The advantage is that it will be easier to produce. - Battery management is a new subject, comprised of monitoring battery conditions and sensors. There are already numerous activities and achievements in this field. Magna Steyr Battery Systems GmbH & Co OG, battery systems ams AG, Unterpremstaetten, a leading provider of high-performance analog ICs and sensors AUTOMOTIVE + MEM-SUPPLIER 16 - Power electronics for the conversion of DC current from the batteries to supply the AC current motor is already viewed as mature technology with a variety of vendors; however, research is still being done for improvements. - Lightweight bodies with a savings target of 25% are a technological challenge. In this case, isolation plays an important role as well, because the waste heat from a conventional internal combustion engine cannot be used in an electric vehicle. The important factor is to prevent energy-consuming heating and cooling. Research in this area is under way. - Charging stations, the energy supplier for electric vehicles, will grow considerably in numbers in the coming years. Only a nationwide network of charging stations will bring acceptance and an increase in sales of electric vehicles. Some Austrian companies are already offering different solutions. A unified international standardization would accelerate this. The European Commission study “SMART 2010 / 0064-definition of necessary transportation and infrastructure systems for automated driving” laid out the requirements for automotive producers for the next two decades already in 2010. The study describes the range of required vehicles and infrastructure systems, including a clear definition of ICT requirements which are necessary for automated driving. Moreover, the study recommends a realistic step-for-step approach to meet these new requirements. - Automated driving This is currently still at the research stage. International companies, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Continental Automotive Systems, Inc. Autoliv, Bosch, Nissan, Toyota, Audi, Volvo, Vislab from the University of Parma, Oxford University and Google are working on prototypes. Austrian companies and research institutions are only marginally involved here. - Infrastructure systems, Intelligent Transport Systems sources: < http://www.testfeld-telematik.at/projektpartner.html> A testing ground for Telematics (ITS) has been set up in collaboration with the companies listed below by 2013.
