Meet at the Crossroads and Forge a Path Into the Future
As the social, political, economic, and cultural landscape of our world evolves to accommodate an ever more interconnected
populace, so too has higher education become increasingly globalized. It is our mission and challenge as international educators to ensure that our field remains at the forefront in preparing the next generation of global-minded leaders.
You are not alone in this endeavor: there are some 10,000 members of NAFSA working every day to build sustainable programs and services that heighten the impact of international education on individuals, institutions, and the global workforce.
When you register for NAFSA’s 62nd Annual Conference & Expo, the largest international education conference in the world,
you’ll tap into this dynamic and forward-thinking community of professionals from around the globe. Only at NAFSA’s annual
conference will you have the opportunity to learn from world-renowned experts and your peers alike to find solutions to your
toughest challenges. The relationships you’ll build here will serve and guide you as you and your institution forge a path into
the future of global higher education.
What better place to survey this ever-changing landscape than in Kansas City, Missouri, a historic crossroads between the East
and West and the North and South of the United States. The region has played host to countless visitors over the years, notably
nineteenth-century pioneers, who would rest and retool here before continuing their arduous journey to a new life on the
western frontier, where everything was possible and anything could happen. The field of international education finds itself in a
similar position today: we have come far from our beginnings, and yet we strive to meet the promise of an expanding future.
As you attend more than 250 educational opportunities, listen to the words of accomplished thought-leaders, and connect
with colleagues in the Expo Hall, you will get what you need to help solve unprecedented challenges. NAFSA’s 2010 Annual
Conference is your go-to place for best practices and insights into:

Salman Rushdie
Salman Rushdie is one of the most celebrated and controversial fiction writers alive today, challenging official
historical, political, and religious doctrine through his captivating prose. The author spent much of his career
under police protection after his fourth novel, The Satanic Verses, set off a storm of protest among certain
Muslim groups. Now the Distinguished Writer in Residence at Emory University in Atlanta, Rushdie is a
powerful advocate for human rights and artistic freedom. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to learn
from this remarkable literary and cultural figure. Rushdie will sign books following his talk.

A passionate advocate for human rights, peace, and social justice, writer and journalist Nicholas Kristof

has spanned over 25 years and earned two Pulitzer Prizes. Kristof has coauthored three books with his wife
Sheryl WuDunn, most recently Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.
Join us to hear his perspective on the forces that are reshaping the world today. Kristof will sign books
following his talk.
International Plenary and Luncheon
Friday, June 4 • 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
Nathaniel Kwabo
Nathaniel Kwabo is a respected voice for peaceful conflict resolution and the defense of human rights in his
native Liberia. From 2007-2010, he served as executive secretary of that country’s Truth and Reconciliation
Commission (TRC), which provided a forum for victims and perpetrators of atrocities committed over nearly
25 years of civil strife to voice their experiences and contribute to national peacebuilding efforts. Prior to
his work with the TRC, Kwabo founded and led Liberia Democracy Watch to fight corruption and abuse of
power at all levels of government.

Discover Strategies for Leading in a Changing Landscape
Start the NAFSA annual conference week with this half-day symposium addressing the recent economic
downturn and how it affects higher education. Every international education leader in a senior position
needs to understand how to take advantage of new trends and directions in higher education for advancing internationalization. The program, Leading Internationalization in Times of Fiscal Restraint, will share
effective rationales for pursuing and funding internationalization in this new environment, cost-effective
strategies for connecting to core institutional mission, approaches to managing international activities,
models for cost-sharing and collaboration, methods for generating new revenue, what to expect with the
“new normal” of higher education, and what it can mean for internationalization.

Discover Your Natural Management Style
You have the makings of a great manager—natural strengths that will serve you well as you manage your
staff, especially during these challenging times. Identify your strengths and learn to maximize their impact.
The Management Development Program will aid in your pursuit of excellence. You will acquire a comprehensive, applied view of management in an international education context. The curriculum employs case
studies to introduce directors and new managers to helpful frameworks and models through which their
own experiences can be analyzed. Held immediately prior to the NAFSA Annual Conference, the program
will focus on how you can adapt your personal management style to the people you supervise and to your
institution, build interpersonal and political management skills, handle conflict, help your staff focus on
quality, manage change, build support for your program, and sustain yourself as a manager.
