Fort Rinella is a late 19th century Bri sh coastal fort built for the
world’s largest muzzle-loading cannon – the Armstrong 100-ton
gun.
This gun was developed and manufactured by the eminent Bri sh
Victorian industrialist and inventor Lord William Armstrong of
Newcastle. Propelled by a quarter of a ton of gun powder, this gun
was capable of firing a one ton shell up to a distance of 8 miles
at which range it could pierce 65cm of ship’s armour. Given its
size, this gun was fi ed with the world’s first ever steam-driven
mechanical loading system which enabled it to be traversed and
re-armed in just 6 minutes.
The fort was built as part of a pair posi oned on either side of the
Grand Harbour to protect the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean Fleet
in Malta. Fort Rinella was garrisoned by 35 soldiers and was selfsufficient in every way. Four such guns were mounted in pairs in Malta
and Gibraltar.
Following years of painstaking restora on, the fort is now open to the
public as a living-history museum where aspects from past military
life are recreated through regular animated displays and historical reenactments. All parts of the fort, including the underground tunnels,
may be visited. TripAdvisor.com has declared this fort as Malta’s top
cultural a rac on in 2014.
The fort is open from Monday to Saturday between 10am and
5pm. Visits include a guided tour in English, a filmshow, two handson displays focusing on military signalling and figh ng skills up to
13.30hrs. Use of mul -language audio-gudies is also included.
At 14.00hrs, a full-scale military historical re-enactment inclusive of
cavalry, musketry and military drill displays and a guided
tour starts in the display arena outside the fort daily.
Live-firing of period cannon and small arms takes place
here. Visitors may also fire a cannon or a soldier’s rifle
for a small fee. One can also sponsor a horse.

Fort Rinella es un fuerte costero británico de finales del S.XIX
construido para albergar el cañón de avancarga más grande del
mundo, el cañón de 100 toneladas de Armstrong. Este cañón
