Dear Friend of Big Brothers Big Sisters,
2011 was an exciting and eventful year at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham
(BBBS)! The hard work of our dedicated Board of Directors, donors, volunteers, and
staff was recognized when BBBS was named the 2011 Best Non-Profit of the Year by the
Birmingham Business Alliance.
Our Bowl for Kids’ Sake events continued to prove tremendously successful, as did our
annual Arby’s Charity Golf Tour. We want to thank everyone who supported us in our
2011 fundraising events.
The trip to beautiful Camp Hargis for 40 Littles is always a highlight of our year at BBBS.
Last year, Camp was once again made possible by our outstanding Young Advisory Board,
who raised more than $10,000 to send our Littles to Camp.
Many of our Bigs and Littles had a blast attending an Atlanta Braves game for Big
Brothers Big Sisters Day at Turner Field last summer. Our Littles in the Children of
Promise Program also enjoyed a field trip to the Civil Rights museum in Birmingham.
We served more than 1,000 children in the Greater Birmingham area in 2011, significantly
increasing the likelihood that these children will graduate from high school and make
better grades, while decreasing the possibility that they will engage in risky behaviors.
At Big Brothers Big Sisters, our vision is that all children achieve success in life. We have
the incredible privilege of changing children’s lives for the better, forever, and we want
to thank all of our supporters who helped us achieve our vision in 2011. We especially
want to thank our Board of Directors, our Young Advisory Board, our dedicated staff, our
donors, the parents, our Littles, and our Bigs. We would also like to thank Chip Bivins
for serving as Board President during 2010 and 2011, and the United Way of Central
Alabama, who helps make these special relationships possible.

Programs Report 2011 in Review
Community-Based Program
The Community-Based Program provides adult mentors (“Bigs”) to
children (“Littles”) in the community who are in need of a positive role
model. These volunteers commit to spending one-on-one time with their
little brother or sister at least twice per month for 3-5 hours per outing.
For example, Bigs and Littles may spend time at the park, museums, or
sporting events. The activity is not as important as forming a friendship
and serving as a role model. Bigs and Littles are matched based upon
preferences, similar interests, locations, and personalities.
In 2011, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham served 431
Community-Based matches. The average match length for CommunityBased matches was 41.8 months, which significantly exceeded the 24month goal.
School-Based Program
The School-Based Program matches volunteer mentors with children
from local schools. The volunteers commit to visiting their little brother or
sister at their school once per week during the school year. Bigs and Littles
might spend time doing homework or shooting basketball in the gym.
The most important thing is that the Little has a reliable and positive role
model in his or her life. School-Based matches keep in touch by phone or
written correspondence during the summer.
In 2011, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham served 547
Community-Based matches. The average match length for CommunityBased matches was 16.2 months, which exceeded the 13-month goal.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham strengthened mentor and mentee
relationships by organizing a variety of fun and engaging match activities for our Bigs and
Littles in 2011, including:
• Attending a Birmingham Barons game
• Attending a Samford University baseball game
• Attending an Atlanta Braves game
• Hiking through Rickwood Caverns
• Visiting the Mattie C. Stewart Foundation’s Choice Bus
• A picnic in Homewood Park
• Our Back to School Bash
• Collaborated with Hand in Paw for “Pawsitive Living,” an innovative twelve week
program that focused on relationship-building, empathy, and compassion through
interacting and caring for animals.

Willie Henderson was matched
with his Little Brother, Walter, in
October of 2008. The two formed
a fast, familial bond. Willie, along
with his wife and four children,
made Walter’s dream of visiting
Disney World come true when they
invited him along on their vacation
this past summer. Walter also got
to travel with Willie to Willie’s
hometown of New Orleans. The
true foundation of their friendship,
however, is the weekly meetings
Willie Henderson and his Little Brother, Walter when the two enjoy eating, watching
sporting events, or having
meaningfull conversations. Willie offers the encouragement and confidence for
Walter to reach his full potential and is always available to talk with Walter about
anything going on in his life. When he’s not spending time with his Little Brother,
Willie also volunteers his time at BBBS by serving on the 2012 Board of Directors.
Willie also served as the President of the Young Advisory Board in 2010 & 2011,
where he raised money and planned events. Willie is the General Manager of the
downtown Arby’s store. Additionally, Willie was named the 2011 Alabama Big
Brother of the Year by Governor Robert Bentley.
Joan Sheppard and her Little Sister, Randilee,
have been matched for over 5 years. Joan
provided consistency and stability for Randilee during some difficult times and has been
a confidant and a great support system. Joan,
an avid traveler, has taken Randilee on several
trips to the beach. As a result of Joan’s impact,
Randilee’s self-esteem and outlook on life have
improved, and she has become more involved
in school activities. Joan enjoys watching her
play in the school marching band. Randilee’s
mother has referred to Joan as “the match
of the decade” and as “an angel from above”.
Joan has shown true dedication and has been
a wonderful friend and Big Sister. Joan was
also named Alabama’s 2011 Big Sister of the
Year by Governoe Robert Bentley.
