Welcome
Welcome to our annual Spring Gala. Each year numerous
volunteers, together with the Center for School-Community
Partnership, work tirelessly to present us with an evening of great
food, community-building and lots of bidding.
All this is done in an effort to raise money for the important
work of the PTAs and ASIJ. Both the Chofu and ELC PTAs work
together throughout the year to foster a united American
School in Japan that enjoys the strong support of parents,
administrators and alumni. In so many ways, this Gala is the
highlight of the events that define our school community.
It is the ultimate way for us to come together, united around a
worthy cause — our children!
With your help we will continue to fund PTA events such as
Spirit Day and the ELC’s Fall Family Festival as well as programs
such as parent education, grants and continuing education
for teachers and administrators.
We also support the 8th Grade Celebration, the 12th Grade
Graduation Reception and Japanese culture activities
including omochi pounding; sweet potato digging;
taiko drumming and sumo wrestlers, plus so much more.
PTA funding is crucial for so many of the best memories our
children take away with them from ASIJ.
On behalf of the ELC and Chofu PTA boards, we want to thank
you for your support. We hope that everyone will go home with
fond memories or more tonight. Enjoy your evening!
Sincerely,
Lenore Reese and Anush Balian
ELC and Chofu PTA Boards
Highly talented band with over 300
Hawaiian songs in its repertoire, they are

L0 The Ridge Wine Upgrade - Bottoms Up!
Tonight’s wine upgrade offers the chance to receive 12 amazing bottles of
California wine to savor with your meal tonight, and to take with you to enjoy in the
comfort of your own home. The winner’s table will enjoy six bottles of Ridge Monte
Bello 2012 and six bottles of Ridge Monte Bello Chardonnay 2012.
Ridge Vineyards began in 1885, when Osea Perrone, a doctor who became
a prominent member of San Francisco’s Italian community, bought 180 acres
near the top of Monte Bello Ridge, in the Santa Cruz mountains of California.
He terraced the slopes and planted vineyards; using native limestone,
he constructed the Monte Bello Winery, producing the first vintage under that
name in 1892. This unique cellar, built into the mountainside on three levels, is
Ridge’s production facility.
The signature wine of Ridge is its Monte Bello, a field blend of Cabernet Sauvignon
mixed with varying percentages of other varietals grown in the same location—
usually including Merlot, Petit Verdot and occasionally Cabernet Franc. Vinous Media
described the 2012 Monte Bello as “one of the most harmonious young Monte Bellos
I can remember tasting. Seamless and voluptuous through to the finish, the 2012 is
showing beautifully today. Raspberry jam, pomegranate, white flowers, mint and
spices are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. A wine with a distinctly
red-hued profile, silky tannins, no hard edges and exceptional overall balance,
the 2012 Monte Bello is simply magnificent. The 2012 is racy but also impeccably
balanced throughout.” They rated it a whopping 98 points.
The Monte Bello Chardonnay was also well received, earning a solid 94 points
from the Wine Advocate. They described it as “a beauty” noting that it was
“ripe, concentrated and still fresh, with lots of golden fruits, toasty oak, crème
brulee and minerality, it’s medium to full-bodied, concentrated and layered,
with a classy, balanced fruit and integrated acidity.”
All aboard the Maharajas’ Express! Widely considered to be one of the top 10
train trips of a lifetime, you and a lucky guest will spend four days and three nights
in a deluxe cabin aboard this luxury train enjoying the sights and sounds of India.
The Gems of India route takes you to the “Golden Triangle” with three of the
most fascinating tour destinations in India—Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. The Treasures
of India is a whirlwind tour showcasing no less than five UNESCO World Heritage
Sites within the “Golden Triangle.” From the colorful bazaars and majestic forts of
Rajasthan, to catching a glimpse of tigers prowling in the wild in Ranthambore
National Park along with insider experiences and shopping detours in Agra
and Jaipur, this is your chance to see it all in royal style. Also available on the
Maharajas’ Express itinerary is the local sightseeing, shopping and optional spa
breaks at select destinations. All this while, you’ll be enjoying India’s most luxurious
train with elegant décor, gourmet dining, and state-of-the-art amenities.
Also included in this amazing package is ¥100,000 worth of Taj Hotel gift cards
which can be used in any Taj Palace or Taj Hotel in India. [Train does not run

important centers of business, with its world-class art, culture, architecture,

culture and classic Asian flourishes. You and three guests will spend four nights in

Moshe Safdie, is comprised of three iconic hotel towers (one of the most complex
buildings ever built) and offers stunning views of the cityscape and Gardens
by the Bay. Bring your bathing suit as you definitely do not want to miss the
Skypark Infinity Pool—the world’s largest rooftop pool at its height offering the best
city-skyline view of a five-star hotel in Singapore. Step out the door to dig
into delectable Southeast Asian fare at a humble street hawker stand.
The membership is single entrance so that you can share it amongst your family
members including the kids—as long as it is only one person each time. But it
doesn’t stop there...here is the best part. You will have the privilege of a private
one-hour lesson with ASIJ’s own professional golfer, the talented Hideto Tanihara—
when he’s not on tour of course! Hideto has represented Japan in many

He has had 11 professional wins on the Japan golf tour which is a remarkable
record. He is also a master putter having been ranked #1 three years in a row for
best putting average. Need some putting practice maybe? To make this deal
even sweeter, you will receive a pair of tickets to Hideto’s upcoming tournament
in Shishido Hills over four days in early June, also compliments of the Tanihara
family. This is the ultimate package for anyone that appreciates golf.

L10 - Mother’s Day Master Class
with Chef Suga
Mother’s Day is coming up (May 15th), and what better way to honor that
special mom than with a once-in-a-lifetime master class with Chef Yosuke Suga?
Known internationally as Joel Robuchon’s Michelin-starred Executive Chef at
the L’Atelier restaurants world-wide, Chef Suga is now running his own “culinary
laboratory” here in Tokyo called Sugalabo. Chef Suga wants to bring
his philosophy of culinary curiosity and Iron Chef expertise to the lucky winner
and up to 9 guests.
We are delighted to have the Miele Center in Omotesando hosting this exciting
event in honor of our fifth year of Spring Gala partnership. While the place and
date are set, what you will create is up to you. Chef Suga’s philosophy is, “I cook
for my guests, not for myself.” And with this in mind, the extremely lucky winner
will work with the Master beforehand to determine a three-course menu that you
would like to learn how to perfect, including an appetizer, a main course, and a
dessert. (Chef Suga is endlessly curious, so don’t be surprised to find him learning
from you, too!) Of course, after all your hard work you will be hungry, so you and
your guests will enjoy everything you’ve mastered and can toast to your success
with four bottles of Laurent-Perrier Champagne. [The master class will be held
on Mother’s Day, May 15th, from 11am–2pm on the 3rd floor of the Miele Center
in Omotesando. In consideration of Chef Suga’s schedule, the date, time and
space is non-negotiable.]

As Co-Chairs of this year’s Spring Gala, it has been our privilege to be a part
of the community’s endless generosity, devoted dedication and genuine
camaraderie that makes this event such a continued success. This evening could
not be what it is without every last drop of your donated efforts, time, creative
ideas, prizes and underwriting. The following people pulled together in projects
big and small to help ensure we achieved our goal of a fun, community building
night for our parents and faculty, as well as a successful night of fundraising for our
Chofu and ELC PTAs. A few words for those who went above and beyond...
