Kaum eine Stadt aus dem einstigen Osten hat sich so
prächtig entwickelt wie Tschechiens Hauptstadt. Schon
kurze Zeit nach der Öffnung zum Westen wandelte
sich Prag zur «Szenestadt der Neunziger», avancierte
zum ökonomischen Musterknaben und erreichte
so den schnellen EU-Beitritt. Bekannte Werte wie ein
umfangreiches Kulturleben, die berühmte böhmische
Küche und Sehenswürdigkeiten, die in ihrer Anhäufung
einem grossen Freilichtmuseum gleichen, haben sich
geschickt mit frischen Impulsen in der Architektur und im
Lebensstil verbunden. Trotzdem hat die pulsierende
Moldaumetropole den Liebreiz einer etwas verschlafenen,
märchenhaften Kleinstadt bewahrt, und ihr fussläufiges
Zentrum ruft nach ganz persönlichen Entdeckungsreisen.
The Czech capital has developed more splendidly than
most other former Eastern Bloc cities. Shortly after the
collapse of the Iron Curtain, Prague emerged as the
in city of the 1990s, gaining a strong economic profile that
facilitated the country’s acceptance as a member
of the European Union. The city’s extensive cultural life,
famous Bohemian cuisine and abundance of attractions
worthy of an open-air museum have blended readily with
an innovative architectural and lifestyle scene. Yet the
pulsating metropolis on the Vltava River has successfully
retained the charm of a somewhat sleepy town with
fairy-tale qualities. Its pedestrian-friendly centre beckons
the visitor to explore it in a very personal way.

> Kaum eine europäische Metropole wurde mit so vielen Attributen be-
dacht wie die Hauptstadt der Tschechischen Republik. «Das Goldene
Prag» nennt man auch gerne die «Tausendjährige», die «Stadt der hundert Türme» oder die der «goldenen Dächer». Tatsächlich ist in Prag
fast alles aus Gold, sogar die Gelben Seiten heissen dort Goldene
Seiten. Was in Prag vor allem überzeugt, ist die Vielseitigkeit. Je nach
Blickwinkel und Situation eröffnet sich dem geneigten Besucher ein
ganz anderes Prag, als er erwartet. Begeben wir uns also auf die Reise
durch einige der hundert Seiten der Goldenen Stadt.
Fangen wir mit einem Klischee an, nämlich dem Bier. Der berühmte
Schriftsteller Bohumil Hrabal sagte einmal: «Wo andere Städte Grundwasser haben, da hat Prag Bier.» Tatsächlich ist der jährliche Bierverbrauch der Tschechen mit 160 Litern Gerstensaft pro Kopf europaweit
mit Abstand am höchsten. Die Bierstube ist also auch ein Stück
Lebensqualität, dem sich viele Einheimische nicht verwehren. Im Gegensatz zu manchen Nachbarländern setzt man sich einfach an einen
halb gefüllten Tisch und nicht an einen freien, denn nur so kommt man
ins Gespräch.
Die deftige böhmische Küche begründet Prags gastronomischen
Ruf; diese bringt inzwischen auch für Ernährungsbewusste die richtigen Happen auf den Teller. Von Wien hat Prag die Kaffeehauskultur
geerbt, wenngleich nicht im selben Umfang. In einem Café trifft man
sich, liest Zeitungen, ist einfach nur sich selbst und wird vor allem
nicht zum Bestellen genötigt. Der wahre Kaffeehausgänger bestellt
sein Getränk übrigens türkisch, also mit Satz.
Besonders amerikanische und asiatische Touristen betrachten
Prag angesichts der vielen mittelalterlichen Gebäude als Märchenstadt. «Ist dieses Gebäude vor oder nach dem Krieg entstanden?»,
fragte einst eine Amerikanerin ihren Guide. «Vor Amerika, Madame»,
lautete die Antwort. Die über Jahrhunderte reichende Architektur wird
gerne als Kulisse für internationale Spielfilme verwendet: «Amadeus»,

visitors can find themselves looking at a completely different side
of Prague than what they had expected. Let’s set off then and explore just some of the Golden City’s

We begin with a cliché: beer. Czech

“Prague has beer where other
cities have groundwater.” And in
fact the Czechs are leaders in
beer drinking, with an annual
per capita consumption of 160

hall then represents a quality-oflife element that many locals consider essential. And unlike the
custom in many neighbouring
countries, where one is expected
to take a seat at an unoccupied
table, the practice here is to join
a half-full table, which is the
most suitable way of striking up
a conversation.
Hearty Bohemian cuisine is
the basis of Prague's dining scene,
but servings now cater to the needs
of calorie-conscious diners, too.
Prague has inherited Vienna's coffeehouse culture, if perhaps on a
lesser scale. The city's cafés are
an ideal place to meet friends or
leisurely read the newspapers.
Here you can just be yourself.
You will not be pressured into
ordering. By the way, genuine
coffeehouse patrons order their
coffee Turkish-style, that is with
the grounds.
American and Asian tourists
are especially inclined to look upon
Prague as a fairy-tale city because
of its many ancient buildings.
“Was this building built before
or after the war?” is a question
attributed to an American tourist.
To which the tour guide replied:
“Before America, Madame.”

Film «The bourne Identity» wurden alle in Prag gedreht. Die BarrandovStudios in Prag gelten als die grössten von Europa. Es ist nicht unwahrscheinlich, in einer angesagten Bar einen bekannten internationalen Schauspieler zu treffen.
Für viele galt Prag Anfang der Neunziger als billig. Dies ist glücklicherweise vorbei, auch die entsprechende Klientel wird nun weniger
angezogen. Trotz EU-Beitritt und der Teuerung der letzten Jahre ist
das Preisniveau noch immer recht günstig, besonders bei Dienstleistungen und in der Gastronomie. Als Shoppingparadies sticht Prag
nicht gerade hervor, ist aber durchaus einen Einkaufsbummel wert:
Die Suche nach Antiquitäten, Lederwaren, Holzspielzeug und Marionetten lohnt sich, ebenso wie das Stöbern in Juweliergeschäften.
Die Stadt ist seit 1989 dynamisch wie kaum eine andere Metropole in Europa. In raschem Wechsel gingen neue Restaurants und
Clubs auf und wurden gleich danach von wieder anderen ersetzt.
Einige davon sind inzwischen legendär. Zum Glück hat diese Schnelllebigkeit aufgehört, doch der Trend zum Wandel bleibt.
Prag fesselt. Wer einmal hier war, kommt bestimmt noch einmal
oder gleich mehrfach wieder. Keiner hat diese Bindung zu Prag so eindrucksvoll formuliert wie Franz Kafka: «Das Mütterchen hat Krallen» –
die Stadt hält gefangen, man kommt kaum wieder von ihr los. +

were shot here. Prague’s Barrandov Studios are the largest in Europe. So the likelihood of bumping
into a famous film star in one of the
local watering holes is rather high.
Many people regarded Prague
as a cheap getaway destination in
the early ‘90s. Fortunately, this
attitude is no longer current. And
the type of visitor associated with
low-budget locations has also declined. But despite membership
in the EU and the inflation that
has left its mark in recent years,
prices in Prague are still comparatively favourable, especially
for services and in restaurants.
Although Prague does not exactly rank as a shopping mecca,
shoppers will still find much here
to delight them: antiques, leather
goods, wooden toys and puppets
are good value. Browsing around
in the city’s jewellery shops can
also be rewarding.
Since 1989, Prague has been
one of the most dynamic cities in
Europe. New restaurants and
clubs sprouted rapidly, only for
some of them to soon be replaced
by others. Some of them have
even acquired mythic status in
the meantime. This extreme pace
has now eased, but the trend toward change remains evident.
Prague somehow gets under
your skin. Visitors are sure to return, many of them more than
once. The hold Prague can exert
was best expressed by none other
than Franz Kafka, who said: “The
little mother has claws.” Once
Prague has you in its grip, you’ll
find it almost impossible to free

> Attend an evening of blacklight theatre: this unique genre
combines elements of pantomime and objects that appear to
move without human involvement. Particularly recommended is the

> Order your taxi by telephone. Call 14014 rather than trying
to hail one at Wenceslas Square or behind the Old Town Square.

There is something charmingly old-fashioned about the Imperial’s interior, which

Wie Wien und München liegt auch Prag in der Übergangszone von ozeanischem zu kontinentalem Klima. Klassische
Reisezeit ist das Frühjahr mit Temperaturen um 15 bis
20 Grad. Der Sommer in der Stadt ist fast schon zu heiss
mit Höchsttemperaturen jenseits der 30° C und den
höchsten Niederschlägen, der Herbst um Ende September
ist wiederum angenehmer. Ab Mitte Oktober kühlt es
deutlich ab, der November zeigt das melancholische Prag.
Im Dezember bewegen sich die Temperaturen um den
Gefrierpunkt, im Februar zeigt das Thermometer Werte
jenseits von minus 10°C.
KRIMINALITÄT
Die hohe Anzahl an Sicherheitskräften in der Stadt ist
schon auffallend. Die eher niedrige Kriminalität hat in Prag
praktisch nur zwei Ausprägungen: Einerseits verstehen die
Taschendiebe ihr Handwerk meisterlich, zum anderen
werden hin und wieder teure Autos gestohlen. Es hat sich
zwar in letzter Zeit gebessert, doch Vorsicht ist in jedem
Fall ratsam.

was built on seven hills, first taking shape in the 8th century.
The city today is divided into 22 districts, but its most
famous areas are all found within Prague 1 (Old Town, New
Town, Lesser Town, Castle District and Josefov, the former
Jewish Quarter). The historic centre is protected by UNESCO.
Many places in this land of castles and fortresses can be
explored from Prague on day trips.
POPULATION
Prague is the Czech Republic’s biggest city, with a population
of approximately 1.2 million, followed by Brno (370,000),
the provincial capital of Moravia, Ostrava (310,000) and
Plzen (165,000). Most of Prague’s citizens reside away
from the centre, which has become too expensive for most
people to afford. Each year some six million visitors stay
in the city’s hotels. Day trippers and tourists using private
accommodation are not included in this figure.

GEOGRAFIE
Prag ist nicht nur die Hauptstadt Tschechiens, sondern
auch ihr politisches, kulturelles und vor allem wirtschaftliches Zentrum. Die Lage an der Moldau ergibt sich
durch einen alten Handelsweg, der von Dresden bis nach
Wien führte. Die Fläche von Prag beträgt 496 Quadratkilometer inklusive vieler Grünflächen. Wie Rom wurde
auch Prag auf sieben Hügeln erbaut, allerdings wurde
die Stadt erst im 9. Jahrhundert gegründet. Prag ist in
22 Bezirke aufgeteilt, wobei die klassischen Stadtteile
Altstadt, Neustadt, Kleinseite, Burgviertel und die Josephstadt als einstiges Judenghetto allesamt in Prag 1 liegen.
Dieser historische Kern steht komplett unter dem Schutz
der UNESCO. Viele touristische Ziele im Land der Burgen
und Schlösser können von Prag aus in einem Tagesausflug
erreicht werden.
CLIMATE
Like Vienna and Munich, Prague lies in the transition zone
between a maritime and a continental climate. The ideal time
to visit is the spring, when temperatures are between 15
to 20° C. Summer temperatures in the city can climb above
30° C and be uncomfortably hot. The heaviest rainfall also
occurs at this time of year. Autumn, at least around the end
of September, is more pleasant. Temperatures drop sharply
from October onward. November sees the city at its most
melancholy. Temperatures in December, in which Christmas
markets dominate the scene, are usually around the
freezing point. February is the coldest month, with temperatures falling below –10° C.
CRIME
You can’t help but notice the heavy police presence throughout the city. The crime rate in Prague is relatively low and
comes in two basic forms: pickpockets here are masters of
their “trade”. Local car thieves, it seems, prefer expensive
vehicles. The problem has eased somewhat in recent times
but caution is still advisable.
