Humility
How do we react when we encounter people who are very humble?
Do we like them? Or do we call them names and cajole them? Do we
pray for the grace of such a rare gift? Or do we envy those that have
such gifts? The gift of humility is such great a virtue that it brings
honor to the Christian and, as well, brings the individual very close to
Christ. "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the
man who humbles himself will be exalted".
In the Gospel today, A prominent Pharisee invites the Lord to his
house, not to thank God for his benefits, not to rejoice at the presence
of the Lord in his house, not to be taught by the teacher of men and
nourished with the food of the soul. The Pharisee invited Jesus in order to observe, scrutinize the Lord and
find faults with Him; Jesus accepted the invitation and transformed the occasion and intention of his host into
a good opportunity for teaching what God expects and wants from us. One of the "obstacles" Jesus pointed
out was pride. Pride is a vice not a virtue. It is a major vice that is so prevalent among us and if care is not taken, it is capable of ruining our faith. Let us beware of it.
Our Lord is humble and wants all who associate with Him to be humble. Any guest who does not wear the
cloak of humility can hardly find favor with the Lord. Above all, when we are humble, we are exulted.
Fr. Gerald
P. Gerald

Ordination to the Transitional Diaconate
at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral
Nine “transitional deacons” were ordained at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels by Bishop David O’Connell. These men are entering their last year of study toward ordination to the priesthood.
Our new deacons from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are: Juan Martin Barajas, Jose Castaneda, Joseph Choi,
Ron Clark, Martin Gonzalez, Tim Grumbach and Robert McGowan. We also are blessed to have Charles
Balamaze and Deusdedit Najja from the Archdiocese of Kampala, Uganda who are taking part in the ceremony
at the Cathedral.
In all, St. John’s Seminary has 20 new deacons for the dioceses and religious orders we serve. Let us keep all of
them in our prayers.

In the Spotlight
September: The Month of Our Lady of Sorrows
The title, Our Lady of Sorrows, given to our Blessed Mother focuses on her
intense suffering and grief during the passion and death of our Lord. Traditionally, this suffering was not limited to the passion and death event; rather, it
comprised the seven dolors or seven sorrows of Mary. These seven sorrows of
our Blessed Mother included the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt; the loss
and finding of the child Jesus in the Temple; Mary's meeting of Jesus on His
way to Calvary; Mary's standing at the foot of the cross when our Lord was
crucified; her holding of Jesus when He was taken down from the cross; and
then our Lord's burial. In all, the prophesy of Simeon that a sword would pierce
our Blessed Mother's heart was fulfilled in these events. For this reason, Mary
is sometimes depicted with her heart exposed and with seven swords piercing
it. More importantly, each new suffering was received with the courage, love,
and trust that echoed her fiat, let it be done unto me according to Thy word,
first uttered at the Annunciation.
St. Bernard (d. 1153) wrote, Truly, O Blessed Mother, a sword has
pierced your heart.... He died in body through a love greater than anyone had
known. She died in spirit through a love unlike any other since His (De duodecim praerogatativs BVM).

Protecting the Children
Pokémon Go and other popular cell
phone games attract kids and
adults of all ages, but not everyone
who plays is doing it for fun. Some
predators use online games as a
way to connect with potential victims and find out where they’re
playing. It is important to teach
kids not to share locations online
with anyone they don’t know in
real life (anyone who is not a trusted friend, sibling, relative, etc.), and
take steps to disable locationsharing features on cell phones and
devices if possible. For more information, visit: https://
