The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is tight and reserved at
first with immediate signs of oak spice and toast
(it ages 30 months in Slavonian oak).But once it revs up in
the glass, it makes a compelling argument for the vintage.
The fruit is on the ripe side, but only slightly so. In fact, it
delivers a large spectrum of berry flavors backed by lithe
endnotes of cola and licorice. I especially enjoyed the tight,
compact nature of the mouthfeel that gets right to the point
and lingers long enough to keep your interest. Drink: 2015 -2022.
Located in the northern part of the denomination, Pinino is a
partnership between two families, one Austrian
(Hannes und Andrea Gamon) and one Spanish
(Silvia and Max Hernandez). Together they make wine with the
very talented consulting winemaker Paolo Vaggagini.

Then 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous, fleshy wine
endowed with considerable depth and richness. Ripe red
cherries, flowers, mint, spices and licorice are woven together
nicely in this sumptuous Brunello. Crushed flowers and a hint
of tobacco linger on the finish. The 2007 is already quite showy
today and is likely to offer its best drinking relatively early. This
is a highly attractive Brunello from Pinino. The 2007 spent 30
months in Slavonian oak casks. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024

so the wine is best left to rest another few years in the
cellar. Sweet, floral notes add lift and freshness on the firm
yet textured finish. There seems to be enough juciness and
purity in the fruit to support aging. The estate’s Brunello is

and richer than the normal bottling. Scents of smoke, incense,
spices and dark cherries emerge from the glass.
The Clandestino has plenty of intensity and depth, but is also
marked significantly by the French oak. Pinino is clearly working
with first class fruit. The wine shows tons of potential, but the
estate needs to fine tune the approach a bit more.

The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Clandestino is a touch darker,
firmer and fresher than the regular bottling. It, too, possesses
outstanding overall balance. Violets, plums, minerals and
spices are some of the aromas and flavors that make an
appearance in the glass. Today the tannins come across as a
touch firm, and another year or two in bottle can only do the
Clandestino good. The Clandestino spends about six months
longer in French oak than the regular bottling.
