Wir sind im Jahr 1965. Der von
der New Yor k Times ‹Ear ly
Bird› getaufte erste kommerzielle Nachrichtensatellit startet von den USA aus ins All.
Der Mont- Blanc-Tunnel, der
längs te Str aßentunnel der
Wel t , is t endlich fer tig und
verbindet Frankreich und Italien durch einen Berg hindurch.
Die Beatles veröffentlichen in
Engla nd ihr heiß er se hntes
fünftes Album: ‹Help!›.
Und in der Schweiz, genauer
in Klingnau im Kanton Aargau,
ent s teht aus einem k leinen,
aber feinen Sattlerbetrieb die

all the difference. In order to
truly understand de Sede and
t h e w ay i n w h i c h d e S e d e
manufac tur es fur ni tur e , we
would like to tell you a lit tle
about our tradition, about
our his tor y and the path we
have travelled.
Let us look back to the year
1965. The world’s f irst commercial communications satelli te – dubbed ‹Ear ly B ird›
by the New Yor k Times – is
launched into space from the
USA . The Mont Blanc tunnel,
t he longes t r oad tunnel on
ear th, is f inally completed to
link France and Italy through
the mountains. In England, the
Beatles release their eagerly
awaited f ifth album: ‹Help!›
And in Switzerland, or more
pr ecisely in K lingnau in the
Canton of Aargau, the de Sede
company is born from a small

Ulrich and Klaus Vogt develop
for de Sede the modular
DS – 600 seating system,
which snakes its way, metreslong, through the room and
can be reshaped at will. Ubald
Klug designs the fantastically
for med elements of the
DS –1025: intelligent modules

resembling hills, pyramids or

it was both a logical and impor tant step for us to become
the only manufacturer to offer
t h e e xci t i ng d e s ig ns of t h e

association.
SWISS DESIGN, founded by
H a ns Eiche n b e r ge r, Rob e r t
a nd Pe te r H aus s ma n n , Te o
Jakob and Kur t Thut, helped
mould the de Sede image –
with creations like the HE–113
tubular steel chair and the famous RH–304 ‹Unesco chair›.
When the latter was first produced, 24 copies of this contemporar y icon were sent to
Paris as a gift from Switzer land
to mark the bir th of UNESCO.

design. Thanks to the work of
the de Sede Design Team and
to new concepts by designers
like Philippe Bestenheider and
Gordon Guillaumier.
But we are not content to rest
on the laurels of this tradition.
We see it more in terms of a
home base whence we constantly set out anew in order
t o ke e p a l i ve w h a t w i l l a l ways be the ver y essence of

Ein unmögliches Unter fangen?
Oder Träumerei? Für de Sede
ist ‹Per fek tion› Ansporn, Anspruch, Wer tehaltung.
Der realistische Ausgangspunkt
dafür ist unsere gewachsene,
immer wieder verfeiner te und
per fek tionier te Handwer k skunst. Das ist die Seele eines
jeden de Sede Möbels.
Es ist die Sorgfalt, mit der wir
uns stets auch dem kleinsten
Detail widmen möchten. Der
Qualitätswille, der nicht nach
eine r gu te n , sonde r n mög lichst nach der besten Lösung
s trebt. Das kann man den
Möbeln von de Sede nicht nur
ansehen. Man k ann es auch
fühlen, spüren, erleben.
Nicht zuletzt, indem man Platz
nimmt . Der Name de Sede
steht traditionell für perfekten
Sitzkomfor t.
Damit dies so bleibt, fer tigen
wir zu Beginn einer jeden Modellentwicklung nach wie vor
einen auf wendigen Prototyp
im Ma ßs t a b 1:1 a n . A n ihm
wird so lange gearbeitet und
gefeilt, bis nicht nur die ideale
Form entstanden ist. Sondern
eben auch ein nicht mehr zu
verbessernder Komfor t. Diese
Vorgehensweise ist aus unserer Sicht unersetzlich.
Besonder s deutlich wird unsere Liebe zum Detail auch in
der Näherei. Wir wenden
Techniken und Ver fahren an,
wie sie heute nur noch selten
eingeset z t wer den. So wir d
zum B eispiel die Leder hülle
b e i m S e s s e l D S – 51 i n v i e r
Stunden auf wendiger Handarbeit genäht. Bis sie schließlich per fek t passt.
Den Hang zur Finesse und zur
Genauigkeit spür t man natürlich auch bei unseren De sign e r n . G o r d o n G u i l l a u m i e r,

weiß, wovon er spricht.
In diesem Sinne hat ein Möbel
von de Sede dann auch wirklich nichts zu verbergen. Ganz
im Gegenteil. Alle unsere
Sofas und Sessel geben von
der Unterseite aus den Blick
frei auf ihre Konstruk tion.

auch f ür die von uns einge set z ten Leder. Nur die feinsten, makellosen Häute f inden

Denn die auf wendige Selektion durch den de Sede Lederexper ten beginnt ber ei t s in
der Gerberei.
Mit geschultem Blick und
f e i n e m Ta s t s i n n w i r d a n schließend bei de Sede jede
e i n ze l n e H a u t n o ch e i n m a l
Ze n t im e te r f ü r Ze n t im e te r
kontrollier t.
Stimmen Farbe und Ober f lächenstruk tur der verschiedenen Häute wir klich überein?
Gibt es versteck te Fehler im
Leder, möglicher weise verur sacht durch eine schlecht
verheilte Verletzung des Tieres?
Gemeinsam mit unseren Gerbereien unternehmen wir alles,
um am Ende ein Leder zu erhalten, das so beschaffen ist, dass
es die Bezeichnung ‹de Sede
Leder› verdient.
Schließlich sind unser e von
Hand gefer tigten Möbel für all
diejenigen bestimmt, die eben
nicht den Kompromiss suchen.

‹per fec tion› means stimulus,
incentive and value.
The realistic point of departure
for this ar e our es t ab lished
and continually enhanced and
per fected skills of craf tsmanship, which compr ise the
soul of every piece of de Sede
furniture.
It is the painstaking care which
we constantly devote to the
very smallest detail. The quest
for quality – striving not merely for a good solution, but for
the best there can possibly be.
This is not just seen in de Sede
furniture, it is also felt, sensed
and experienced.
Par ticularly when you sit in it,
for the de Sede name tr aditionally stands for per fection
in seating comfor t.
To ensure that this continues
to hold good, we always produce a fully-func tional, fullscale prototype whenever we
star t developing a new model. We work and experiment
on this not just for as long as
i t t a kes to cr eate the ideal
for m, but for as long as we
need to ensure that the seating
comfor t cannot be improved
upon. This is an approach that
we are convinced is vital and
irreplaceable.
Our devotion to det ail be comes par ticularly evident in
our sewing workshop, where
we make use of techniques
a n d p r o ce d u r e s w h i c h a r e
rarely used elsewhere today.
For example: it takes no less
than four hour s to sew the
leather shell for the DS –51
ar mchair by hand to ensure
that it is a per fect f it.
N e e d l e s s to s ay, t h e s a m e
co m m i t m e n t to e x a c t i t u d e
and accuracy is also evident in
our designers. On this subject,
Gordon Guillaumier, the creator of our new de Sede DS–60
sofa, likes to quote Mies van
der Rohe: ‹God is in the
detail.› Take a close look at the
DS – 6 0 a nd you w ill imme diately see that Gordon
G uillaumier ha s hi t the nail
right on the head.
All this means that fur niture
from de Sede really has nothing to conceal. In fact, the very
opposi te: one glance under
a ny of o u r s of a s a n d e a s y
cha i r s r eve a ls e x a c t l y h ow
they are constructed.
The striving for per fection is
especially tr ue in respec t of
the leather that we use. Only
the f inest hides, with not the
faintest blemish, find their way
t o K l i n g n a u , fo r d e S e d e’s
leather specialists begin their
r ig o r o u s s e l e c t i o n p r o ce s s
right there in the tanner y.
When it arrives at the de Sede
workshop, each hide is painstakingly examined with a
trained eye and f inely-honed
s e ns e of t o u c h ce n t i m e t r e
by centimetre.
A r e t he s had e a nd su r f ace
structure of the various hides
really identical? Are there hidden defects in the leather that
might have been caused by a
poorly-healed injur y?
Together with the tanneries,
we do ever y thing possible to
guarantee that the leather we
f inally process is truly excellent enough to deser ve the
name of ‹de Sede leather›.
For in the f inal analysis, ever y
i tem of ha nd - cr af ted fu r ni t ure we produce is intended
for people who are not wil li n g t o a c ce p t t h e s l i g h t e s t
compromise.

ABOUT INNOVATION
W IE gelingt es
einer Marke, die
sich ihrer Tradition ver bun den fühlt, zugleich
for tschr it tlich und zukunf tsweisend zu sein?
Dies geht unseres Erachtens
dann, wenn Innovationen ein
fester Teil der Tradition sind.
Bei de Sede war es schon immer die Kombination aus technischen Kenntnissen und der
Bereitschaft, mit offenen Augen und Ohren durch die Welt
zu gehen , die Innovationen
her vorgebracht hat.
Trends, Messen, Ausstellungen,
unsere erstklassigen Lieferanten, Begegnungen, Erlebnisse …
Inspiration ist überall.
Und es sind natürlich die Designer, von Haus aus Innovatoren, die mit ihren Ideen
und Konzepten an uns herant r e t e n u n d s o d i e Zu k u nf t
von de Sede mitgestalten.
de Sede ar beitet hier zu im mer w ieder mi t der Av a n tgarde der Zunf t zusammen.
Diese Designer unterstüt zen
uns bei unserem Ziel, den
Ke r n d e r M a r ke d e S e d e –
Élégance Radicale – in unverwechselbaren For men und
Materialien auszudrücken.
Die Einzigar tigkeit, die Ausgewogenheit der de Sede Kollektion entsteht am Ende dann
auch aus de r Sy nt hese von
italienischem, schweizerischem
und deutschem Design.
Ein Konzept , sei es noch so
gut und ausgereift, ist niemals
wirklich fer tig. de Sede nutz t
in diesem Sinne prinzipiell die
Chance der technischen Weiterentwicklung. Ein gutes Beispiel ist unser Modell DS–140.
Die Drehsitztechnik des Sofas,
das sich mit zwei Handgriffen
in eine elegante Doppel-Relaxliege ver wandeln lässt,
wurde kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt und verbesser t und
w ir d h e u te u n te r a n d e r e m
auch in unserem Erfolgsmodell
DS – 450 eingesetzt.
Dieses Prinzip gilt selbstverständlich erst recht für unsere
Modelle mit elek trisch angetriebenen Funktionen. Elektronik sow ie A k k u technologie
entsprechen stets dem neusten
Stand der Technik.
Und auch den außerordentlic h e n d e S e d e S i t z ko m fo r t

DS –7 mit der welt weit er sten, für de Sede patentier ten
‹Klapp-Streck-Rückenmechanik › galt und gilt ebenfalls als
echte Innovation.
Heute setz t zum Beispiel der

But however good and welldeveloped it may be, a concept
is never truly concluded and
so, with this in mind, de Sede
exploits the advantages of ongoing technical development.
A good example of this is our
DS–140 model. The swivelling
seat technolog y of this sofa ,
which can be conver ted with
t wo simple manipulations
into an elegant double loung-
e r fo r co mfo r t a b l e r e l a x a tion, is cons tantly being
f u r t h e r d eve lo p e d a n d e n hanced and is also used today
in other models, such as our
successful DS – 450.
Needless to say, this principle
is doubly true when it comes
to models with elec tr icallyp owe r e d f u n c t i o n s , w h os e
electronics and batter y technolog y ar e always s t ate - ofthe-ar t.
We even strive to develop the
already ex traordinar y level of
de Sede seating comfor t still

In their time, designs like the
DS – 80 daybed, with its then
revolutionar y patchwork f inis h , a n d u n i ve r s a l m o d u l a r
systems, such as the DS – 600
and DS –76 , all r anked as inn o v a t i o n s . T h e D S –7 s of a
with the world’s f irst fold-out
adjustable back mechanism –
patented by de Sede – is still
as much a genuine innovation
now a s i t w a s w he n i t w a s
f irst introduced.
Today, it is furniture like the
new DS –315 easy chair from
P h ilip p e B e s te n h e id e r t ha t
set s the tone , thank s to i t s
s tr uc tured geometr y underscored by a hand-sewn seam
fully 26 metres in leng th, for
which it was necessar y to develop a special leather thread.
Then again there is the new
DS – 60 sofa and matching
armchair created by Gordon
G uillau mie r, w hose eleg a nt
lines were only made possible
by the use of a sophisticated
metal-framed construction.
Many interior design concepts
would not be feasible without
de Sede furniture with practical functions. For example, the
first sofa of its time with backr es t s t ha t could b e move d
through a full 360 °: the
DS –16 4 by Hugo de Ruiter.

Shor tly af ter the company’s
inception in 1965, for instance,

aniline leather collec tion on
the market. This was followed
by its f irst use of lacing to join
sec tions of leather and then
by t he in t r od u c t ion of ou r
elaborate technique of tucked
cross stitching.
A miles tone in the manufacture of upholstered furniture
to this ver y day is our NECK
leather, which is up to half a
centimetr e in thick ness . A s
was zigzag stitching using surgical thread – a sewing technique for ex tremely thick
leat he r w hich , al t hough no
longer used today, opened up
new oppor tunities and processing techniques at the end
of the 1970s.
Just how innovative it is possible to be in developing new

quently shown today by our

Obwohl ich schon sehr lange
dabei bin und wir klich jeden
Tag mi t Leder zu tun habe ,
muss ich deutlich Ja sagen. Leder ist ein Naturmaterial und
somit immer wieder ander s.
Was zum Beispiel die Zeichnung von Narben und Poren
angeht , entdecke selbs t ich
sozusagen wieder und wieder
‹neue Bilder›. Es ist einfach so,
dass keine Haut der anderen
gleicht . Da s fa szinier t mich.
Das gilt auch f ür die Ber ührungen, den Griff. Ein wer tvolles Leder zu fühlen, zu spüren,
ist und bleibt etwas ganz Besonderes. Ich kann mir nicht
vor s tellen, da ss dies einmal
Routine werden könnte. Vielleicht ist es ein bisschen wie
mit wer tvollen Weinen.

Bullenhäute aus Skandinavien,

Erst einmal werden die Häute
per Kühltranspor t vom
Schlachthof in die Gerberei geliefer t. Das geschieht aus ökologischen Gr ünden übr igens
‹ungesalzen›. In der Gerberei
werden die Häute dann in vielen aufwendigen Prozessen mit
natürlichen Mineralsalzen, mit
edlen Fetten, Ölen und hochwe r t ige n Fa r b e n n a c h u n d
nach in de Sede Leder verwandelt. Im Anschluss inspiziere
ich – noch in der Gerberei –
ganz genau jede einzelne der
so entstandenen Lederhäute.
Die aus unserer Sicht geeigneten werden von mir signier t
und schließlich nach Klingnau,
zu de Sede geschickt. In Klingnau pr üfen wir dann später
noch einmal akribisch jede einzelne Haut, die ankommt.

Kur z gesag t: in der Dicke des
Leders, dem Narbenbild und
dem Finish. Die Dicke des Leders reicht von 1,1 Millimetern
bis zu einem halben Zentimeter.
Da spürt man schon einen Unterschied. Die Struk tur unser e r Le d e r w i e d e r u m r eich t

Leather is a natural material,
so each piece is always different. For example, I am always
discovering ‹new pictures› in
t he pa t te r ning of t he g r a in
and pores. It is simply that no
two hides are ever the same
and I f ind that fascinating.
The same is tr ue of the feel
when I touch it. Handling
premium leather and feeling
i t s essence is always a ver y
special experience. I can’t imagine that this could ever become sim ple r ou t ine . I t ’s
much the same thing as with
f irst-class wines.

First of all, the hides are taken
in refrigerated trucks from the
abat toir to the tanner y. For
ecological reasons, they are
not “salted” for transpor t. At
the tannery, the hides are subjec ted to a var iet y of fair ly
complex processes using natural mineral salts, fine fats, oils
and top-quality dyes to transform them little by little into
de Sede leather. Finally, I make
a close inspection of each single hide that ha s been pro cessed befor e i t leaves the
tanner y. I sign the hides that
m e e t our s t r inge n t cr i te r ia
and then they are brought to
the de Sede wor k shop in
Klingnau, where each hide undergoes fur ther rigorous inspection af ter arrival.

In a nutshell: the differences
a r e in t he t hick ness of t he
leather, the pattern of its grain
and in the f inish. Thicknesses
range from 1.1 millimetres to
half a centimetre. That’s a difference you can really feel! The
structure of our leather goes
from smooth – in the case of
our NUVO quality – to quite
co a r s e i n s t r u c t u r e i n o u r
NECK leather, which really is
half a centimetre thick.

Name de Sede nicht nur für
ganz besondere Leder. Sondern auch für einen ganz besonderen Umgang mit Leder.
Alles beginnt damit, dass
de Sede 1965 aus einem kleinen, aber feinen Sat tlerbetr ieb her vor geht . Da s is t
unsere Herkunft, unsere DNA.
Gleich nach Gründung gelingt
de Sede er s tmals die Ver arbeitung von Leder mit so genannter Riemchenabhef tung.
Ein Novum. Noch im selben
Jahr entsteht die erste Kollektion aus reinem Anilinleder,
also aus gänzlich naturbelassenem Leder, das maximal mit
etwas Wachs versehen wird.
Auch dies eine Neuheit. Nur
wenige Jahre später set z t
de Sede mit der Patchwor kVerarbeitung einen weiteren
wichtigen Trend.
Anschließend wird unser fünf
Millimeter dickes Bullenleder
NECK international gefeier t.

It all began back in 1965 when
de Sede was born from a
small bu t highly sk illed saddler’s wor k shop. That is our
origin, our DNA.

time succeeded in joining sections of leather using a lacing
technique – an eye-catching
innovation. The same year also
saw the f irst collection using
pure aniline dyeing; with this,
the leather is left in its totally
natural state and treated only
with a little wax at most – another exciting first.
Just a few years later, de Sede
set a fur ther impor tant trend
with the use of patchwork.
Nex t , another inter national
milestone in the manufacture
of upholstered furniture was
es t ablished wi th our N ECK
leather – ox hide a full f ive
millimetres in thickness. The
introduction of zigzag stitching
using surgical thread fur ther
underpinned our trailbla zing
role in processing so - called
thick leathers.
These are just a few examples
of our on-going and intensive
involvement with this wonderf u l n a t u r a l m a t e r i a l . S i n ce
1965, a wealth of fur ther innovations have contr ibu ted
tow a r ds f ir mly es t a blishing
