CRITERIOS DE ACCESIBILIDAD
Adaptado / Accesible: Un espacio, instalación o servicio se considera Adaptado/
Accesible si se ajusta a los requerimientos funcionales y dimensionales que garanticen
su utilización autónoma y con comodidad por las personas con movilidad reducida.
Practicable: Un espacio, instalación o servicio se considera Practicable cuando, sin
ajustarse a todos los requerimientos que lo califiquen como adaptado, no impide su
utilización a las personas con movilidad reducida.
Inaccesible / con barreras: Un espacio, instalación o servicio se considera Inaccesible o
con barreras cuando, sus estancias y elementos de que consta la instalación, no permite
el acceso, la circulación y la estancia en sus dependencias.
ACCESSIBILITY STANDARDS
Adapted / Accessible: A space, or facility is considered Adapted when people with
disabilities or any kind of mobility impairment may do a functional, autonomous use of it.
Practicable: A space, or facility is considered Practicable when though it does not fulfil all
the required standards to qualified as adapted but it is suitable for a proper use by the
handicapped.
Inaccessible / with barriers: A space, or facility is considered Inaccessible or with
barriers, when facilities or accessories part of a facility itself do not allow access,
manoeuvring or the stay at their outbuildings.
ZUGÄNGLICHKEITSSKRITERIEN
Behindertengerecht: Ein Raum, Einrichtung, Wasch- oder Toilettenraum gilt als behin-
dertengerecht, wenn er auf die funktionellen und räumlichen Erfordernisse eingestellt ist,
die eine selbständige Nutzung durch Personen mit Behinderung, eingeschränkter
Beweglichkeit oder Verständigungsschwierigkeiten garantieren.
Behindertenfreundlich: Ein Raum, Einrichtung, Wasch- oder Toilettenraum gilt als
behindertenfreundlich, wenn er auf die funktionellen und räumlichen Erfordernisse
eingestellt ist, die eine Nutzung durch Personen mit Behinderung, eingeschränkter
Beweglichkeit oder Verständigungsschwierigkeiten, mit Hilfe einer zweiten Person
nutzen können.
Nicht Behindertengerecht / mit Barrieren: Ein Raum, Einrichtung, Wasch- oder
Toilettenraum gilt als nicht behindertengerecht oder mit Barrieren, wenn seine
Gestaltung und Einrichtung, Zugang, Bewegung oder Aufenthalt nicht erlaubt.

LA LLEGADA DE “LOS SUECOS”
DIE ANKUNFT DER “SCHWEDEN”
Historia
En el año 1957, un grupo de jóvenes suecos con movilidad reducida
(originada por problemas reumáticos), después de haber recorrido medio
mundo en busca de un lugar cálido, llegó a un poblado marinero.
Geschichte
Im Jahre 1957 kam eine Gruppe schwedischer Jugendlicher mit
rheumatisch bedingten Mobilitätseinschränkungen, nachdem sie auf
der Suche nach einem warmen Ort bereits die halbe Welt umreist
hatten, in einem Fischerdorf an.
Este lugar, gracias a su agradable clima y a su playa, les permitió mejorar
notablemente su estado de salud. El privilegiado enclave se llama Playa
de Los Cristianos y la llegada de estos visitantes escandinavos dio lugar
al nacimiento del turismo en el Municipio. Desde entonces nos
esforzamos en suprimir las barreras de la vida diaria.
Ejemplo de ello es el mayor Paseo Marítimo Peatonal Sin Barreras de
Europa, con sus 7 kms. de longitud. Este atractivo, unido a una amplia
oferta de hoteles accesibles, variadas actividades de ocio, deportes
adaptados, y por supuesto, playas accesibles convierten Arona en uno
de los destinos elegidos, durante todo el año, por miles de turistas con
movilidad reducida.
THE ARRIVAL OF “THE SWEDES”
History
In 1957, a group of young Swedes with
reduced mobility (caused by rheumatism)
arrived in a seafaring town after having
travelled the world in search of a warm
climate in which to settle.
Der Aufenthalt in diesem Ort bescherte ihnen dank seines milden
Klimas und seiner belebenden Strandluft eine bemerkenswerte
Besserung ihrer Gesundheit. Wir kennen diese privilegierte Enklave
unter dem Namen Playa de Los Cristianos und die Ankunft dieser
skandinavischen Besucher legte den Grundstein für die Entwicklung
des Fremdenverkehrs in der Gemeinde. Seitdem bemühen wir uns, die
Hindernisse des täglichen Lebens zu beseitigen.
Ein gutes Beispiel hierfür ist größte barrierefreie Strandpromenade
Europas mit 7 km. Länge. Dieser Anziehungspunkt in Verbindung mit
einer großen Auswahl behindertengerechter Hotelanlagen, einem
vielfältigen Freizeitangebot, angepassten Sportarten und selbstverständlich
den behindertengerechten Stränden, machen Arona das ganze Jahr
über zu einem der beliebtesten Urlaubsziele für Tausende von Touristen
mit eingeschränkter Mobilität.

privileged spot is known as Playa de Los

Scandinavian visitors marked the start of
the municpality’s tourist industry. Since
then, we have worked hard to eliminate
the barriers of everyday life.
A prime example of this is Europe’s largest
Barrier-Free Pedestrian Sea Promenade, which runs for 7 km. along the
coast. This major attraction, together with a wide range of accessible
hotels and several leisure options, adapted sports facilities, without
forgetting its accessible beaches, make Arona a popular choice for
thousands of tourists with reduced mobility throughout the year.

El Ayuntamiento de Arona se está convirtiendo en un municipio
accesible, donde todos los ciudadanos, sin excepción, disfruten de
unos óptimos niveles de bienestar.

Para ello asume el reto de que su oferta turística llegue a todo el mundo,
poniendo en marcha el Plan Integral de Accesibilidad de Arona.

turísticos, Centros de Ocio, Restauración, Agencias de Viajes, etc.).
• TRANSPORTE: Autobuses accesibles, taxis adaptados, empresas de
alquiler de coches, etc.
• COMUNICACIÓN SENSORIAL: Telecomunicaciones (Pagina Web
Accesible, Telefonía móvil, Teléfonos de texto).
• OCIO Y TURISMO

Our commitment
The Borough of Arona is becoming an accessible municipality where
all residents and visitors can enjoy matchless standards of wellbeing.
To this end, it is working to ensure that its tourist attractions and amenities
are open to everyone, through the Arona Integral Accessibility Scheme.
This municipal scheme covers all types of everyday activities. The
objective is to improve the quality of life of the disabled and residents
in general.
The principal areas of action are given below:
• URBAN PLANNING: Elimination of architectural barriers on public
thoroughfares.

• BUILDINGS: Public buildings, health, government, education
and culture centres and private buildings (Tourist
Accommodation, Leisure Centres, Bars and Restaurants, Travel
Agencies, etc.).

Unser Versprechen
Die Gemeindeverwaltung von Arona ist derzeit dabei, den Ort in eine
behindertengerechte Gemeinde zu verwandeln, in der sich alle
Bewohner, ohne irgendeine Ausnahme, in hohem Maße wohlfühlen.
Mit diesem Ziel starten wir den “Plan Integral de Accesibilidad de
Arona”, d.h. den ganzheitlichen Plan für ein behindertengerechtes
Arona und stellen uns damit der Herausforderung, ein touristisches
Angebot zu entwickeln, das für Jedermann zugänglich ist.
Dieser Plan findet auf die gesamte Gemeinde Anwendung und umfasst
alle Bereiche des täglichen Lebens. Sein Ziel ist es, die Lebensqualität
der behinderten Menschen und der Bevölkerung im Allgemeinen zu
verbessern. Dabei sind folgende Arbeitsbereiche von besonderer
Bedeutung:
• STÄDTEBAU: Beseitigung von architektonischen Barrieren auf
öffentlichen Wegen.
• BEBAUUNG: Öffentliche Gebäude (Zentren für
Gesundheitsdienste, Verwaltung, Erziehung und Kultur) und
privat genutzte Gebäude (touristische Unterkünfte,
Freizeitzentren, Restaurants, Reisebüros, usw.)
• TRANSPORT: Behindertengerechte Busse und rollstuhlgerechte
Taxis, Autoverleihfirmen, etc.
• SENSORIELLE KOMMUNIKATION: Telekommunikation
(zugängliche Webseite, Mobiltelefone, Texttelefone)

ASSISTANCE FOR PERSONS WITH REDUCED MOBILITY
SPANISH AIRPORTS
En cumplimiento del Reglamento (CE) 1107/2006 del Parlamento Europeo, se pone en
marcha a partir del 26 de Julio de 2008 en todos los aeropuertos europeos un servicio de
atención a los pasajeros con movilidad reducida.
Esta medida comunitaria supone un gran avance social para las personas con discapacidad
y por esta razón, se han dispuesto todos los recursos económicos, materiales y humanos
necesarios para hacer posible que, en todos los aeropuertos españoles, se preste un
servicio de calidad que garantice que todas las personas puedan disfrutar del transporte
aéreo entre cualquier punto de la geografía europea, sea cual sea su discapacidad.
In compliance with Regulation (EC) nº1107/2006 of the European Parliament, starting July
26TH 2008 all European airports will offer assistance services for passengers with
reduced mobility. This European Community measure represents a significant social
advance for disabled persons and for this reason all the necessary financial, material and
human resources have been provided to make it possible for every Spanish airport to
render a quality service guaranteeing that all people can enjoy air transport anywhere in
Europe, regardless of their disability.
How to procure this service?
¿Cómo solicitar este servicio?
1º Solicítelo al menos con 48 horas de antelación* al hacer su reserva o adquirir su
billete a través de su agente de viajes o compañía aérea, 902 404 704 o en la web:
www.aena.es
(* de no respetarse este tiempo de antelación, no podrá garantizarse la calidad del servicio
ofrecido).
2º Acuda al punto de encuentro a la hora acordada. Si no se ha fijado hora alguna, como
mínimo dos horas antes de la hora de salida programada. Avise de su llegada por el
intercomunicador y espere, allí le recogerán. Puede ver la localización de los puntos de
encuentro en la web www.aena.es.
3º Facturación y embarque: Será atendido y acompañado durante el proceso de
facturación y en los controles de seguridad, hasta su asiento en el avión. Le ayudarán con
su equipaje y ayudas personales.
4º Llegada a su destino: Le ayudarán a embarcar y a recoger su equipaje. Después le
acompañarán al punto de encuentro del aeropuerto que usted decida.

3º Check-in and boarding: You will be assisted and accompanied during the check-in
process and the security checkpoints, until you are in your seat on the plane. They will
help you with your luggage and personal needs.
4º Arrival at your destination: They will help you deplane and retrieve your luggage.
Afterwards, they will accompany you to the meeting point of the airport of your choice.

DIFFERENT DISABILITIES
WCHC Pasajeros privados de cualquier movilidad y no autosuficientes.
Deben ser acompañados a su asiento y necesitan ayuda personal completa. SI su viaje dura más de tres horas, necesitan acompañante.
WCHR Pasajeros que necesitan ayuda durante el traslado entre la aeronave y la terminal, autosuficientes para embarcar y desplazarse dentro de
la aeronave.
WCHS Pasajeros que necesitan ayuda entre la aeronave y la terminal y
también para embarcar, autosuficientes dentro de la aeronave.
DEAF Pasajeros sordos.
BLND Pasajeros con discapacidades visuales.
WCHC These passengers are entirely immobile and not self-sufficient. They must be
accompanied to their seats and they need complete personal assistance. If the journey is
more than three hours long, they need a companion.

WCHR These are passengers who need help getting from the aircraft to the terminal. They
can board and move around the aircraft on their own.
WCHS These passengers need help getting from the aircraft to the terminal and also for
boarding. They are self-sufficient inside the aircraft.

Gemäß Verordnung (EG) Nr. 1107/2006 des Europäischen Parlaments tritt ab dem 26. Juli
2008 auf allen europäischen Flughäfen ein Hilfsservice für Fluggäste mit eingeschränkter
Beweglichkeit in Kraft.
Diese Maßnahme der EU stellt einen großen sozialen Fortschritt für Menschen mit
Behinderungen dar. Aus diesem Grund wurden alle notwendigen finanziellen,
materiellen und personellen Mittel bereitgestellt, um auf den spanischen Flughäfen die
Servicequalität zu gewährleisten und sicherzustellen, dass alle Flugreisenden unabhängig
von der Art ihrer Behinderung entspannt an jeden Ort in Europa reisen können.
Welche Schritte m�ssen Sie unternehmen?
1. Stellen Sie sp�testens 48 Stunden im Voraus einen Antrag* bei der Reservierung oder
beim Kauf des Flugtickets in Ihrem Reisebüro oder bei der Fluggesellschaft,
902 404 704 oder im Internet unter: www.aena.es anzumelden. (* bei Nichteinhaltung
dieser Frist kann die volle Qualität des gebotenen Services nicht gewährleistet werden).
2. Begeben Sie sich zur vereinbarten Uhrzeit an den Treffpunkt. Wurde keine Uhrzeit
vereinbart, spätestens zwei Stunden vor dem planmäßigen Abflug. Benachrichtigen Sie
uns durch die Sprechanlage von Ihrer Ankunft und warten Sie dort, bis Sie abgeholt
werden. Die Standorte der Treffpunkte können Sie unter www.aena.es einsehen.
3. Einchecken und Einsteigen: Sie werden beim Einchecken und bei den
Sicherheitskontrollen betreut und bis zu Ihrem Sitzplatz im Flugzeug begleitet. Wir helfen
Ihnen mit dem Gepäck und leisten persönliche Unterstützung.
4. Ankunft am Zielflughafen: Wir helfen Ihnen beim Aussteigen und bei der
Gepäckausgabe. Danach werden Sie bis zu einem von Ihnen bestimmten Treffpunkt des
Flughafens begleitet.
5. Nach Ende der Betreuung: Wir sind Ihnen für Ihre Mitarbeit durch eine Beurteilung
dankbar, wenn Sie das Personal darum bittet. War etwas nicht zu Ihrer Zufriedenheit,
wenden Sie sich an [email protected]
VERSCHIEDENE BEHINDERUNGEN
WCHC Fluggäste mit vollständig eingeschränkter Mobilität, die sich nicht selbständig
bewegen können. Sie müssen zu Ihrem Sitzplatz begleitet werden und benötigen eine
persönliche Rundum-Betreuung. Dauert die Reise länger als drei Stunden, ist eine
Begleitung erforderlich.
WCHR Fluggäste, die eine Betreuung auf dem Weg zwischen Luftfahrzeug und Terminal
benötigen, die aber selbständig einsteigen und sich innerhalb des Luftfahrzeugs fortbewegen können.
WCHS Fluggäste, die eine Betreuung auf dem Weg zwischen Luftfahrzeug und Terminal
und beim Einstieg benötigen, die sich aber innerhalb des Luftfahrzeugs selbständig bewegen können.

DESCRIPCIÓN. El pueblo de Arona es capital
y sede de la vida política del municipio, cen
trada en el Ayuntamiento que se sitúa en la
Plaza del Cristo junto a la iglesia de San
Antonio Abad. En las calles aroneras se respi
ra el ambiente tradicional de la cultura
canaria, las calles estrechas y empedradas, las
casas de arquitectura típica canaria y el
entorno natural lo convierten en una zona
rural que mantiene su identidad. Este histórico
pueblo (cuyo conjunto histórico ha sido
declarado Bien de Interés Cultural) recibe a
sus visitantes haciendo gala de un esplendor
tanto arquitectónico como paisajístico, que
en épocas pasadas estaba reservada a las
clases sociales más privilegiadas.
VISITAS CULTURALES. Su casco antiguo: el recorrido por sus
calles empedradas nos da la posibilidad de contemplar las casas
tradicionales más ostentosas. Arona
tiene su joya arquitectónica en la plaza
donde se alza la Iglesia de San Antonio
Abad, edificio compuesto de una sola
nave que tiene su origen en la antigua
ermita construida en el siglo XVIII. La
sobriedad y la sencillez de la fachada se
ve compensada con la utilización de

procedente del antiguo convento franciscano de Adeje, donde se

VILAFLOR
DESCRIPCIÓN: Tras la conquista de Tenerife (1496), en Vilaflor es
conocida la presencia de conquistadores desde 1501 cuando el
Adelantado Fernández de Lugo otorga tierras a varios de ellos en
el Lugar de Chasna. Ocuparon un territorio donde, anteriormente,
se asentó una población aborigen configurando una delimitación
territorial mucho más extensa que los actuales límites municipales:
el Menceyato de Abona. La tradición cuenta que el nombre de
Vilaflor proviene de la exclamación de un castellano, Pedro de
Bracamonte, que seducido por los encantos de una bella aborigen
no paraba de repetir ¡Vi la flor de Chasna!. Vilaflor ha sido destino
de numerosos científicos,
enfermos y viajeros en general,
que acudían desde la Villa de la
Orotava por el Camino Real de
Chasna para beneficiarse del
clima y su vida placentera. Este
histórico núcleo ha conseguido
mantener intacto el espíritu de
un entorno rural, inmerso en un paisaje de pinos, montañas,
barrancos y bancales de jable.
VISITAS CULTURALES: Vilaflor es uno de los municipios más altos
de España (1.400 mts.) y la visita al centro del pueblo nos sumerge
en un viaje al pasado; inmersas entre numerosas edificaciones de
arquitectura tradicional destacan por su belleza y antigüedad, la
Iglesia de San Pedro de Chasna y la Capilla de San Roque. El templo
de San Pedro, construidos a mediados del siglo XVII, es de una sola
nave y de estilo canario, con un artesonado de inspiración mudéjar,

en alabastro de mediados del
siglo XVI.
Vilaflor rinde culto a la figura
del
Hermano
Pedro
de
Bethencourt que aún hoy con
tinúa su labor y es Beatificado por el Papa Juan Pablo II en 1980 y
canonizado por el mismo en Guatemala en el año 2002.
OTRAS VISITAS RECOMENDADAS: Cuando finaliza el caserío
de Vilaflor, en Lomo Gordo crecen dos ejemplares de Pinus
Canariensis conocidos como Pino Gordo y de la Madre del Agua.
Estos centenarios árboles tienen sesenta y setenta metros de altura
respectivamente, y unos 11 y 8 metros de circunferencia.
PARQUE NACIONAL DEL TEIDE
PATRIMONIO DE LA HUMANIDAD
DESCRIPCIÓN: Una Red de Parques Nacionales en el
Archipiélago Canario intenta conservar sus ecosistemas más carac
terísticos. Así, el Parque Nacional del Teide situado en el centro de
la isla de Tenerife, alberga la mejor manifestación de la vegetación
del piso supracanario. El P.N. del Teide, con una altitud media
superior a los 2.000 mts, nos ofrece una de las muestras más espec
taculares de vulcanismo a nivel
mundial. Creado en 1954 en
reconocimiento a su singularidad
volcánica y biológica, es en sus
18.990 hectáreas el mayor Parque
Nacional de las Islas Canarias. En
1989 fue galardonado con el
Diploma Europeo en su máxima
categoría “A” que otorga el
Consejo de Europa, y posterior
mente ha sido prorrogado en el
año 1994 y 1999.

EL TEIDE Y LAS CAÑADAS: El Teide es, con sus 3.718 mts. sobre
el nivel del mar, la cima más alta de España. Se trata de un edificio
volcánico de tipo estratovolcán y se encuentra asentado sobre una
antigua y gigantesca depresión calderiforme configurada por dos
semicalderas, separadas entre sí por los Roques de García y
formadas por hundimientos y colapsos. El Teide culmina en el
Pilón de Azúcar, que aún presenta actividad residual en forma de
fumarolas y solfataras a 86º C.
En la parte septentrional de la Caldera de Las Cañadas se formó
posteriormente el actual edificio del impresionante estratovolcán
Teide-Pico Viejo. Este estratovolcán y la caldera son las dos mayores
estructuras del Parque. La única erupción en fecha histórica que se
ha producido dentro de
los actuales límites del
Parque Nacional ocurrió
en las laderas del Pico
Viejo o Chaorra en 1798
a lo largo de tres meses,
formándose las llamadas
Narices del Teide. El
Circo de Las Cañadas es
una de las mayores
calderas del mundo. Tiene forma elíptica, con 16 km. de eje mayor,
10 km. de eje menor y 45 km. de perímetro. De este último, la parte
visible abarca actualmente 23 km. ya que la parte norte fue
enterrada en erupciones posteriores, parte de las cuales han
formado el Teide, cuyas lavas llegan hasta la base del escarpe.

nes. Algunas de las especies de aves son: cuervo, perdiz moruna,
paloma bravía, cernícalo, alcaudón, caminero, mosquitero, pájaro
azul del Teide (Fringilla Teydea), Herrerillo (Parus caeruleus teneriffae)
FLORA: Endemismos canarios: Retama del Teide (Spartocytisus
Supranubius), Alhelí del Teide: (Erysimum scoparium) de flores
blancas y violetas, Tonátida (Nepeta teydea): de flores color mora
do. Flor del Malpaís (Tolpis webbii): de color amarillo, crece en
malpaíses antiguos. Endemismos del Piso Supracanario: Tajinaste
Rojo (Echium Wildpretii) Borraginácea con una inflorescencia
piramidal de flores rojas que pueden llegar a los 3 m. de altura.
Margarita del Teide (Argyranthemum Teneriffae) de flores blancas
y amarillas. Hierba pajonera (Descurainia Lasiospermus); Hierba
conejera (Pterocephalus lasiospermus) de flores rosáceas.
Endemismos exclusivos del Parque Nacional: Violeta del Teide
(Viola cheiranthyfolia) que se encuentra en los altos de Guajara y
laderas del Teide hasta cerca de su
cima, donde tiene el honor de ser
la planta que florece a mayor
altura. Tajinaste Azul (Echium
Auberianium), menor en altura
que el rojo, se encuentra solo en la
mitad oriental del Parque. Tonática
(Nepeta Teydea var. Albifllora), es
una variedad albina de la tonática.
Rosal del Guanche (Bencomia
Stipulata), rosácea cuya población
es muy escasa, con unos 50 ejem
plares.
Cardo
de
plata
(Stemmacantha cynaroides): esta
especie está todavía amenazada de extinción. Codeso
(Adenocarpus var. viscosus), fabácea de flores amarillas.
FLORA Y FAUNA: El mundo vegetal es otra de las singularidades
a destacar en el Parque Nacional, donde las especies vegetales
están completamente adaptadas a las rigurosas condiciones de
existencia como son la altitud, fuerte insolación, amplitud térmica
y escasez de humedad. La FLORA está representada por 139
especies de las que un 71% son endémicas de Canarias, un 40%
son endémicas del ecosistema que representa el Parque y un 22%
son endemismos canarios exclusivos del propio parque. FAUNA:
La fauna realmente interesante del Parque es la invertebrada, y
dentro de este grupo los insectos, representados por más de 700
especies, en su mayoría endémicas y de gran valor científico.
El Parque es pobre en especies de animales superiores: destacan el

En las cercanías se encuentra el PARADOR NACIONAL y el CENTRO
DE VISITANTES CAÑADA BLANCA. En ese lugar se encuentra la
formación rocosa Los Azulejos, que llama la atención por su color
verdoso debido a su contenido en hidratos de hierro. Las lavas

procedentes de las distintas erupciones han rellenado extensas
superficies de la antigua caldera con materiales volcánicos de todo
tipo, con lo que se ha dado forma a un espectacular paisaje de
aspecto “caótico”. Así pueden observarse volcanes de forma
redondeada y tonalidades amarillentas y blanquecinas por la
acumulación de piedra pómez como en el caso de Montaña
Mostaza. Las coladas de lava forman a veces campos de escoria lla
mados Malpaíses, otras

El Portillo es un caserío con varios bares y restaurantes que ofre
cen sus servicios durante el día. Aquí se encuentra situado el
Centro de visitantes (muy cerca del cruce de El Portillo) que abre
de 9 a 16 h. Este centro se ha recreado en el interior de un tubo vol
cánico, dispone de elementos interactivos, paneles fotográficos y
retroiluminados, sala de videoteca, librería y salón de actos en el
cual se proyecta un audiovisual (15 min). Esta visita es de carácter
gratuito, así como el Jardín anexo y el servicio de rutas a pie. El
Jardín anexo al Centro de Visitantes ocupa una parcela de 4 hec
táreas y has ido creado para exponer, cuidar y reproducir la flora
autóctona del Parque, estando representadas más del 75 % de las
especies superiores del Parque.
LA OROTAVA
DESCRIPCIÓN: El Valle de
La Orotava, sin duda, el
Jardín del Teide, se extiende
desde las mismas faldas del
gran volcán hasta una costa
de sugerentes formas y
sabor marinero, para ofrecer al visitante el encanto de una Villa
con una sorprendente belleza monumental y paisajística. El casco
antiguo, declarado en su totalidad Monumento de Interés Histórico
Artístico Nacional encierra joyas arquitectónicas de marcado carác
ter. La Orotava ha sabido guardar sus tradiciones y renueva año tras

año, celebraciones de gran
interés y atractivo cultural,
como el Corpus Christi,

VISITAS CULTURALES: La Plaza de La Constitución junto a la que
se alza el Convento de Nuestra Señora de Gracia, hoy Centro
Cultural, y su Iglesia de San Agustín; el Jardín Victoria con elegantes
paseos y el Mausoleo del Marqués de la Quinta Roja: obra de
Adolph Coquet; y la sede del Liceo Taoro, edificio historicista. El
Ayuntamiento, es una construcción de estilo neoclásico.
La Iglesia de La Concepción está acertadamente considerada la
mejor muestra del barroco en Canarias, y merece una detenida
visita, al igual que el Convento de San Benito de Abad, convertido
en Museo Iberoamericano de Artesanía, con fondos muy intere
santes que muestran el arte popular de América, España y Filipinas,
y que permite conocer la artesanía de Canarias, que en este caso
dispone de atención particular en la Casa Torrehermosa, sede de
la Empresa Insular de Artesanía-Artenerife o en otros centros de la
ciudad. Las llamadas Casas de Los Balcones, en la carrera del
Escultor Estévez, son una de las muestras más sobresalientes de la
arquitectura tradicional canaria. En una de ellas tiene su sede el
Centro de Documentación de la Artesanía de España y América.
Los molinos de agua, algunos de ellos en activo; la Iglesia de San
Juan Bautista, en la Villa de Arriba, son otros lugares a visitar.

Avenida de Colón. Desde la marinera Ermita de San Telmo el paseo
invita a seguir disfrutando del mar y permite llegar al centro
histórico de la ciudad, donde merecen especial atención la Plaza
de Europa; el Ayuntamiento; la Casa de Miranda; la Iglesia de
Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia, con un sobresaliente retablo
barroco; la Plaza del Charco, el entorno ideal para la tertulia; la
Casa de la Real Aduana y el pequeño puerto de pescadores; la
Iglesia de San Francisco; el Museo Arqueológico y otros muchos

CANDELARIA - SANTA CRUZ - LA LAGUNA
CANDELARIA
DESCRIPCIÓN: La Villa de Candelaria tiene
una función religiosa a la que debe su
nacimiento y posterior desarrollo. El caserío
tuvo su origen al abrigo de la Virgen de
Candelaria, venerada por los aborígenes
desde antes de la conquista y proclamada
posteriormente Patrona del Archipiélago. La
imagen de la Virgen de Candelaria se
encontraba en la isla de Tenerife antes de su
conquista. Su aparición data de 1390 o 1391,
fueron dos pastores del Menceyato de
Güimar, del que era Mencey Acaymo quienes
hallaron sobre una roca en la playa de
Chimisay: “Como entorpecía el paso del ganado, le hicieron señas
para que se retirase (al no poder dirigirse verbalmente a ella por
ser mujer y hallarse en descampado). Pero la imagen permanece
inmóvil, por lo que uno de ellos intenta arrojarle una piedra, pero
su brazo quedó yerto, el otro se acerca a la Virgen y procura
cortarle un dedo, pero es él quién recibe las heridas. Acuden a su
Mencey, quien, tras aproximarse a contemplar tal maravilla, ordena
a los protagonistas del hallazgo que la lleven a su casa. Al hacerlo,
ambos quedan sanados milagrosamente. Con posterioridad,
Antón, un guanche cristianizado, eligió para custodiar la venerada
imagen la gruta de Achibinicó”; hoy esa cueva se llama de San Blas
y fue el primer templo católico de la isla. El
primer templo, terminado de construir en
1672, poseía un hermoso retablo, devora
do por un incendio en febrero de 1789. En
diciembre de 1948 la prensa local recoge
la noticia del comienzo de las obras de la
bella iglesia que hoy podemos contemplar:
un santuario de planta clásica de tres naves

con crucero. La primitiva imagen, junto con otras obras impor
tantes, desapareció a causa de un aluvión en 1826. La actual talla es
obra de Fernando Estévez, quien la realizó en 1827.
VISITAS CULTURALES: La visita que más reclama la atención es la
Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, edificada por suscripción
popular. En su interior hay murales de José Aguiar y obras del pintor
Martín González. Junto a ésta, la Plaza de la Basílica con un conjunto
monumental en bronce que representan a los reyes guanches que
gobernaron la isla; por un costado frente al mar, la Cueva de San
Blas (Achibinicó) que sirvió como primera parroquia del valle. En
la parte alta, está el barrio de Santa Ana, junto a la iglesia de su
nombre que constituye el núcleo inicial de población, con
construcciones muy antiguas formando un conjunto pintoresco,
destacando el edificio del Ayuntamiento,
antigua
hospedería del Cabildo
durante las fiestas. La calle de La Arena con
centra los comercios, restaurantes y enti
dades bancarias.
FIESTAS: En dos ocasiones al año, cuando
se celebra la festividad litúrgica de la
Patrona (2 de febrero), y durante su festividad popular (15 de agos
to), todos los caminos de la isla y de las islas llevan a Candelaria.
Ataviados con pieles, los participantes escenifican desde el hallaz
go de la virgen por unos pastores, hasta su adoración ante los mila
gros observados.

SANTA CRUZ
DESCRIPCIÓN: Santa Cruz se encuentra situada al nordeste de la
isla, abarca una extensión de 151 km2 . Desde 1927 comparte capi
talidad de todo el archipiélago con Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. En
su origen Santa Cruz no presentaba calles definidas en su trazo,
sino una acumulación de dispersos asentamientos en forma de
casas terreras. La imagen actual del municipio es acogedora y
cálida, no sólo tiene un carácter urbano, sino que también conserva
el encanto colonial de sus antiguas edificaciones, salpicada en
cada rincón por el colorido de las flores. En la ciudad podemos
disfrutar de un agradable clima con una temperatura media de
22º C durante todo el año.
VISITAS CULTURALES: Santa Cruz cuenta con numerosos edifi
cios que merece la pena visitar, unos son institucionales, como los
que albergan el Cabildo Insular, el Ayuntamiento de Santa Cruz, la
Subdelegación del Gobierno, la Capitanía General o el Parlamento
de Canarias. Otros son religiosos, como la Iglesia de La
Concepción, un edificio erigido en el siglo XVI; o la Iglesia de San
Jorge que es una de las más antiguas y que hasta el año 1990 fue
capilla anglicana. Ermitas como la de San Telmo, el edificio más
antiguo de la ciudad, es una típica construcción religiosa de la
primera época tras la conquista de la isla, fundada a mediados del
siglo XVI, en honor al patrón de los marineros. Otra es la Ermita de
Regla, fundada en 1643 y dedicada a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
que sirvió como guarnición del Castillo
de San Juan. Destacan también los edifi
cios históricos como El Castillo de San
Juan, La Cruz de Los Caídos, monumento
situado en el centro de la Plaza de España
en homenaje a los caídos durante la
guerra civil española.
Santa Cruz es una ciudad llena de lugares
con encanto para pasear, plazas, parques
y alamedas constituyen uno de los
principales atractivos. De todos ellos
destacaremos: El Parque García Sanabria,
pulmón de Santa Cruz, con más de 200

especies vegetales procedentes de diferentes lugares del mundo,
que ocupan una extensión de 70.000 m2. Cada año se celebra en
este parque la Exposición Regional de Flores y Plantas. Uno de los
lugares más románticos de la ciudad es la Plaza del Príncipe.
Destacaremos también como lugar a visitar la Alameda del Duque
de Santa Elena, construida en 1787. La Plaza de España donde se
ubica el monumento a los caídos, es el escenario del prestigioso
carnaval de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. La Plaza de la Candelaria, al
inicio de La Calle Castillo, se encuentra rodeada por numerosos
edificios como la Casa de la Carta, el Casino y la Cámara de
Comercio Insular.
FIESTAS: La actividad lúdica y cultural de la ciudad es casi perma
nente durante todo el año. Es en la capital tinerfeña donde cada
año se celebra el Carnaval más importante de Europa, y el segundo
más importante del mundo. Declarado Fiesta de Interés Turístico
Internacional por la Secretaría de Estado para el Turismo el 18 de
Enero de 1980, es la principal fiesta de la isla. El Carnaval representa
una fiesta de civismo y buen humor en el que la fantasía, el colorido
y la alegría siempre están presentes tanto de día como de noche.
El pueblo tinerfeño, acompañado de los miles de visitantes
venidos de todo el mundo, se vuelca en el disfrute y buen espíritu
que caracterizan el carnaval de Santa Cruz.
NATURALEZA: Santa Cruz no es sólo casco urbano, sino también
pueblos y caseríos. Además de ciudad, Santa Cruz es playa y bosque,
acantilados y valles, zonas de esparcimiento y de reserva natural.
Al norte de la ciudad se
encuentran las montañas
del Macizo de Anaga, que
ha sido catalogado como
Parque Natural, dado su
gran
valor
ecológico.
Además recibe la califi
cación de Parque Rural. El
Macizo de Anaga es único
en el mundo, forma la parte
más estrecha de Tenerife y
es un espacio que asciende
rápidamente desde el nivel
del mar hasta los mil metros de altitud. A partir de esa cordillera
central salen agudos lomos y profundos barrancos que conducen
hasta el mar, dando lugar a una variedad de microclimas y de flora,
con abundantes endemismos. La formación de Anaga, consecuencia
de un periodo de intensa actividad volcánica, se remonta a 6,5
millones de años y es una de las escasas reservas mundiales del
bosque de laurisilva, vegetación originaria de la época terciaria y
que supone un recurso muy importante en cuanto a la provisión
de agua de toda la zona.
En Anaga también es posible observar el Mar de Nubes, paisaje
meteorológico que se origina en la faldas de las montañas como
consecuencia de los vientos alisios, las frecuentes brumas y el alto
nivel de humedad. El paisaje humano de la zona está ligado a las
actividades agrícolas, ganaderas y pesqueras. Pequeñas manchas
blancas salpican el paisaje verde del lugar formando los diferentes
caseríos que se encuentran repartidos por el Macizo de Anaga.

DESCRIPCIÓN: San Cristóbal
de La Laguna es un municipio
lleno de hermosos contrastes y
de secretos sorprendentes, de
innumerables testimonios de su
ayer y de su hoy. Esta ciudad ya
ha cumplido 500 años de historia.
Fue fundada en 1496 por el
conquistador y primer adelantado
de Canarias Don Alonso
Fernández de Lugo. El nombre
de La Laguna se tomó de una pequeña laguna de aguas
estacionales que se remansaban en el Valle de Aguere al noroeste
de la isla, a poco más de 600 metros sobre el nivel del mar,
protegida por un amplio arco de montañas en las que crece
abundante vegetación, el pino canario y la laurisilva, entre otras
variadas especies de flora autóctona del archipiélago.
Fue el primer enclave urbano de la isla, y se erigió en su capital al
VISITAS CULTURALES: Durante siglos La Laguna, fue árbitro de la
vida política, económica y social de Tenerife.
Desde la ciudad se ejercía el gobierno de toda la isla, hasta la
constitución de los actuales ayuntamientos, en la primera mitad
del siglo XIX. De esta etapa se conserva el inconfundible señorío
que se mantiene en el trazado de su recinto urbano, en el carácter
de su arquitectura doméstica, en sus ventanales, amplios muros y
en la sobria belleza de sus principales templos y edificios
públicos. Merece la pena contemplar la fachada plateresca de la
antigua Casa del Corregidor, de las casonas o Palacio Nava y
Grimón, las cuales constituyen ejemplos máximos de la arquitectura
civil de las Islas Canarias. Entre los edificios públicos destacan la
fachada del actual Ayuntamiento, de estilo neoclásico y La Casa de
los Capitanes Generales, dentro del conjunto de edificios históricos
que conforman el Ayuntamiento. En la antigua Calle Real (hoy San
Agustín) sobresalen La Casa Montañés y La Casa Lercaro, hoy
Museo de la Historia de
Tenerife y antiguo Instituto
Cabrera Pinto, que fue convento
agustino y primera sede de La
Universidad. En el plano reli
gioso, la Catedral destaca por
su majestuosidad, así como el

ser el lugar elegido por el Adelantado Alonso Fernández de Lugo,
quien quería ser su alcalde. La elección del lugar en tierra adentro
la resguardaba de la piratería y favorecía su establecimiento como
nudo de comunicaciones.
El crecimiento que experimentó la ciudad fue espectacular.
Cuando aún no había transcurrido un cuarto de siglo desde su
fundación, San Cristóbal de
La Laguna estaba mucho
más poblada y mejor que
ningún otro pueblo de las
Islas Canarias. La Laguna ha
sido declarada Patrimonio
de la Humanidad.

templo matriz de Nuestra Señora de
la Concepción, primera parroquia de
la isla creada a raíz de la conquista de
1496 y declarada monumento artístico
nacional en 1947. En la Iglesia de
Santo Domingo se conserva la pila de
piedra roja, donde recibió el
bautismo el Beato José de Anchieta,
apóstol del Brasil y fundador de la
ciudad de Sao Paulo. Los conventos
de clausura de Santa Catalina y Santa
Clara muestran bellos artesonados
mudéjares estofados y policromados.
En el santuario del Cristo de La
Laguna se venera un gran retablo de plata repujada , la imagen del
Cristo de la Laguna, la efigie del Crucificado de mayor devoción de
las Islas Canarias, y máximo exponente de la imaginería religiosa
que se guarda en el Archipiélago.
La Laguna conserva intacto su primitivo trazado urbano, tal y como
lo registró un conocido plano, a finales del siglo XVI. Un trazado
en retícula casi regular que influyó indudablemente en la disposi
ción urbanística de diversas ciudades del Nuevo Mundo, dadas las
relaciones de las islas con América desde que se produjo el
descubrimiento.
La Laguna es la ciudad de las torres, campanarios, repiques litúrgicos.
La Torre de la Concepción de planta cuadrada es el referente
máximo de la ciudad, desde el punto de vista arquitectónico y su
símbolo visual más destacado. San Cristóbal de La Laguna es
también ciudad universitaria. Esta se estableció en el año 1742 y es
la más antigua de Canarias, y en sus Facultades y Escuelas
Superiores y Técnicas estudian 25.000 alumnos.

NATURALEZA: La Laguna tiene lugares de incomparable belleza,
poblados por la flora más representativa de las Islas Canarias,
sobre todo en el Monte de Las Mercedes, que forma parte del
Parque Natural de Anaga, de un gran valor paisajístico, con formas

PARA VISITAR: En la parte alta del municipio, se encuentra
Santiago del Teide, capital del mismo. En su centro urbano se
puede observar una importante muestra de arquitectura rural así
como religiosa. La joya arquitectónica o religiosa es la Iglesia Vieja,
o La Ermita de Santiago,
la más antigua de la
demarcación, cuyos orí
genes datan de 1550 (en
Valle de arriba).
También es de recono
cido valor la iglesia de
San Fernando Rey.
LOS GIGANTES
DESCRIPCIÓN: Santiago del Teide está
localizado en la parte Suroeste de la isla, y
se extiende desde la costa de Puerto
Santiago hasta los bellos pinares de la
cumbre del Teide. Sus zonas turísticas,
Puerto Santiago y Los Gigantes han logrado
que este municipio fuera declarado, desde
los años 60, como destino de Interés
Turístico Nacional.
NATURALEZA: En la costa de Santiago del
Teide se encuentra el pueblo marinero de
Puerto Santiago y los Acantilados de Los
Gigantes,
que se ele
van hasta
los mil metros sobre el mar y con
stituyen un área de enorme valor
paisajístico.
ARGUAYO
DESCRIPCIÓN: Arguayo es un
bello caserío, situado a unos 930 m. sobre el nivel del mar.
ARTESANÍA: Centro Alfarero y Museo Etnográfico Cha Domitila:
Este centro es el heredero directo de la cerámica confeccionada
por el pueblo guanche, cuyas piezas son elaboradas artesanal

NATURALEZA: Su paisaje volcánico contrasta con las planta
ciones de la vid, los higos, los almendros en flor, los tomates y la
flora autóctona. Volcán Chinyero: La erupción del Chinyero es la
más reciente de las erupciones históricas que se han registrado en
Tenerife. Comenzó el 18 de Noviembre de 1909 y duró 10 días. La
erupción fue la que emitió menor volumen de lava de cuantas
manifestaciones históricas se han registrado en Canarias. El
Chinyero se alza a 1.560 mts. sobre el nivel del mar y está situado
al noroeste de Pico Viejo y al este de Valle Santiago. En dirección
al pueblo de Masca se encuentra el Mirador de Cherfe. Esta degollada
de Valle Santiago está a 1.100 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

MASCA
DESCRIPCIÓN: El Parque Rural de Teno comprende 8.063
hectáreas y ocupa buena parte del término municipal de
Buenavista. Este Parque constituye una de las denominadas
paleoislas (islas antiguas) de Tenerife dada su condición de macizo
antiguo, alcanzando en algunos puntos unos 7 millones de años.
Los acantilados de El Fraile y Los Gigantes suponen un área de
enorme valor paisajístico, biológico y geológico.
Estos acantilados pueden ser
activos (caso de este último), o
haber quedado muertos, por
el surgimiento de las llamadas
Islas Bajas, nombre que se le
da a los municipios de
Buenavista, Garachico, Los
Silos y El Tanque.
PARA VISITAR: El Caserío de Masca se encuentra enclavado
entre los majestuosos escarpes del Macizo de Teno, en el que la
arquitectura y el paisaje conviven armónicamente.
HISTORIA: Antes de la conquista de la isla de Tenerife, Masca
contó con una importante población
Guanche. Este dato nos lo confirman
los numerosos yacimientos que
esconde el lugar. En 1503 Alonso
Fernández de Lugo, conquistador y
gobernador de Tenerife, cedió a D.
Diego, último Mencey de Adeje,
este barranco con sus tierras y
aguas. Desde entonces y hasta la
década de los 80, cuando mejoraron
las comunicaciones, este lugar vivió
sumido en un largo periodo de ais
lamiento que vino marcado por sus
propias condiciones geográficas.
Este precioso valle se abre hacia el
mar en un impresionante barranco.

PUNTA DE TENO: Mirador natural, de enorme valor paisajístico
desde donde puede observarse los espectaculares Acantilados de
El Fraile y Los Gigantes, resultado del apilamiento de coladas de
lava antiguas que el mar, el viento
y el tiempo han ido modelando.
NATURALEZA: El barranco de
Masca es, sin duda, uno de los
mejores exponentes de este
lento proceso. FLORA Y FAUNA:
Su flora y fauna es muy rica y
variada. Su mayor joya biológica
es la “laurisilva” del Monte del
Agua, siendo éste uno de los
principales reductos de dicha
comunidad en la isla. Existe
también una buena muestra de
retamales y comunidades xéric
as de tabaibas y cardones en las
zonas bajas. El Macizo de Teno
ha sido declarado como Zona de
Especial Protección para las aves,
gracias a su gran riqueza faunís
tica, de ella destacan la paloma Rabiche, Turqué y el Gavilán. Teno,
a su vez, es el último reducto de la isla para especies como el
águila pescadora y el halcón de berbería.
GARACHICO
DESCRIPCIÓN: La fundación de Garachico data de 1496, fecha en
la que el Adelantado Fdez. de Lugo cedió amplias zonas de terreno
al genovés Cristóbal de Ponte, a quien ha de considerarse como
fundador de la hoy villa y puerto de Garachico. Gracias a su privi
legiada situación, los navíos se acercaban hasta su bahía para
protegerse de los temporales convirtiéndose en el puerto más
importante de la isla en los siglos XVI y XVII. Por él eran embarcados
los principales productos norteños, como el vino o el azúcar. Los
barcos partían hacia Yucatán, Rio de la Plata, Flandes, Inglaterra,

Francia y Angola. Estas naves, a su vez, traían paños ingleses, obras
de arte, especias de oriente, telas francesas, etc. Alrededor del
puerto fue surgiendo una población cosmopolita en la que se
instalaron mercaderes y comerciantes que mantuvieron su auge
hasta comienzos del Siglo XVIII.
Todo el apogeo y riqueza desaparecieron en el calamitoso suceso
vulcanólogo del año 1706, concretamente se inició el 5 de Mayo y
finalizó el 13 de Junio, quedando cercenada la vida de la opulenta
ciudad. No sólo desaparecieron casas, palacios e iglesias sino que,
el puerto, su principal
riqueza, resultó maltratado
por la furia del volcán que
lo obstruyó implacable
mente. Las autoridades
insulares dirigieron todo el
comercio de Garachico al
puerto de Santa Cruz.
Arruinado el comercio, los
habitantes comenzaron a vivir de la agricultura y la pesca.
PARA VISITAR: El Convento de San Francisco de Asis, con sus
dos elegantes claustros, frente a la glorieta de igual nombre, es un
activo centro cultural que acoge el museo de la localidad y salas de
exposiciones. Formando parte de la edificación, está la iglesia de
San Francisco, con un gran patrimonio escultórico. Muy próxima
se alza la Iglesia parroquial de Santa Ana, sin duda alguna, uno de
los edificios religiosos más bellos de Canarias. Frente al Roque,
mudo testigo y guardián del lugar se alinean las adoquinadas
calles que invitan a recorrer otros lugares llenos de historia como
la Casa-Palacio de los Ponte: El Convento de San Pedro Apóstol y
San Cristóbal, de las concepcionistas franciscanas, El Convento de
Santo Domingo de Guzmán, El Castillo de San Miguel, el Parque
de la antigua Puerta de Tierra o las ermitas de San Roque y de
Nuestra Señora de Los Reyes.

ICOD DE LOS VINOS
DESCRIPCIÓN: Situado al noroeste de Tenerife, Icod de Los Vinos
hace honor con su nombre al principal cultivo de la comarca.
Además de este cultivo, existe una extensa variedad de agricultura.
Hortalizas, papas y frutales.
Cerca de la costa, en plantaciones en forma de terrazas sobre el
mar, el plátano es el cultivo por excelencia. La pesca tiene también
importancia vital para muchos de sus vecinos, siendo la Playa de
San Marcos su centro marinero. El puerto de San Marcos fue en los
siglos XVI y XVII lugar donde la construcción de barcos tuvo gran
apogeo debido a la riqueza maderera de sus montes y la presencia
de portugueses, que trajeron consigo la destreza para la fabricación.
NATURALEZA: El mar enfrió el magma y dejó caprichosas formas
que hoy invitan al baño, como el Caletón, inigualable piscina
natural. Su costa está salpicada por numerosas calas volcánicas
que se extienden a lo largo de seis kilómetros.
PARA VISITAR: En Icod, puede apreciar a través de la arquitectura
civil y religiosa de su casco histórico, la opulencia de su pasado: La
Iglesia de San Marcos Evangelista,
enclavda en la elegante y acoge
dora Plaza de Lorenzo Cáceres,
señala el centro de la ciudad. El
templo es una de las mejores
muestras del arte religioso en
Canarias, luciendo entre su rico
patrimonio la Cruz de Filigrana,
ejecutada en La Habana a mitad
del siglo XVIII, que se cita como la mayor y mejor pieza de su estilo
existente en el mundo. La plaza de la Pila y las edificaciones que le
rodean, define uno de los mejores conjuntos monumentales de la
isla. La Iglesia de San Agustín, la Plaza de León Huerta, el convento
franciscano del Espíritu Santo con su capilla de Nuestra Señora de
Las Dolores y la Ermita de Las Angustias, son una buena muestra de
los muchos atractivos que guarda el centro histórico de esta ciudad.

NATURALEZA: Icod se caracteriza por el verdor y exhuberancia
de la enorme masa forestal de pino canario, su costa recortada por
calas que terminan en caprichosos acantilados, destacando la
Playa de San Marcos, de fina arena negra, y el tubo volcánico más
largo del mundo denominado Cueva del Viento, conforman un
auténtico mosaico de maravillas naturales en Icod de los Vinos.
Pero por encima de todas estas maravillas se encuentra el
milenario DRAGO.
DRAGO MILENARIO: El Drago (Dracaena drago) es una especie
vegetal endémica de la Macaronesia. Fósil viviente de la Era
Terciaria, que se ha preservado en nuestro archipiélago al que el
carácter insular del mismo atenuó las extremas condiciones
climáticas que se dieron en el continente. Es Canarias el lugar
donde se localiza la mayor distribución actual y donde se conservan
los ejemplares más viejos. El Drago de Icod, también conocido
como Drago Milenario, se ha con
siderado el ejemplar más longevo
(unos 800 años de antigüedad) y el
de mayores dimensiones con un
perímetro de 12 metros y una
altura de 17 metros. El Drago era
conocido desde la antigüedad,
constancia de ello nos han dejado
las crónicas de la conquista de las
islas que cuentan el uso que los antiguos canarios hacían de él,
aprovechándolo, en muchos casos, como elemento tintóreo o
para uso medicinal.

ARONA
DESCRIPTION. Arona is the hub of the
municipality’s political activity, which is
centred in the Town Hall situated in Plaza del
Cristo next to the Church of San Antonio Abad.
Arona is a typical town of the Canary Islands,
with its narrow cobbled streets, traditional
Canary Island architecture and a natural setting in the heart of the
countryside that has enabled it to preserve its identity. This historical
town (whose old quarter has been declared a Site of Cultural
Interest) welcomes visitors who delight at
its architectural splendour and stunning
landscapes, which were once a privilege
that only the upper classes could enjoy.
CULTURAL TOUR. The old quarter: A
stroll around the cobbled streets allows
us to admire the most splendid traditional
houses. Yet Arona’s most precious archi
tectural treasure is the square presided
over by the Church of San Antonio Abad,

a single nave building that stands on the site of a chapel that was
built in the 18th century. The simple and sober façade is balanced
by the use of elaborate stonework featured in the round arch and
at the top of the building. Inside, the single nave leads to a magnifi

ancient Franciscan Convent of Adeje, and which features the
images of San Antonio Abad, the parish’s patron saint, El Cristo de
la Salud and La Virgen de La Concepción.

CULTURAL TOUR: Vilaflor is one of the highest municipalities in
Spain (1.400 m.), and a visit to the town centre will transport us
back in time. Many traditional buildings stand out for their beauty
and history, such as the Church of San Pedro de Chasna and the
Chapel of San Roque. The single nave Church of San Pedro, built
in the mid 17th century in the traditional Canary Island style, boasts
a Mudejar-inspired coffered ceiling, and houses images of
immense artistic value such as the alabaster figure of Saint Peter,
which dates back to the mid 16th century.
Vilaflor pays tribute to the figure of Brother Pedro de Bethencourt
whose work continues today. He was beatified by Pope John Paul
II in 1980, who went on to canonise him in Guatemala in 2002.
OTHER RECOMMENDED VISITS: At the far end of Vilaflor, in
Lomo Gordo, stand two magnificent Pinus Canariensis known as
the Pino Gordo and Madre del Agua. These ancient trees rise up
sixty and seventy metres respectively and have a circumference of
11 and 8 metres.
DESCRIPTION: From 1501
onwards, and following the
conquest of Tenerife (1496),
the Adelantado - the military
governor - Fernández de Lugo
granted lands to several of the island’s conquerors in an area
known as Lugar de Chasna. They occupied an area that was formerly
a native settlement and extended far beyond the current municipal
boundaries known as Menceyato de Abona. Tradition has it that
the name Vilaflor comes from an exclamation uttered by the
Castilian Pedro de Bracamonte, who, captivated by the beauty of a
local girl, was unable to stop repeating “¡Vi la flor de Chasna!”
(“I have seen the flower of Chasna!”). Vilaflor has always been
popular with numerous scientists, the infirm and visitors in general,
who travelled along the Camino Real de Chasna from the town of
Orotava to enjoy a calm and relaxing lifestyle and to benefit from
its excellent climate. This
historic town has managed
to preserve its countryside
atmosphere, set against a
spectacular backdrop of
pine trees, mountains,
ravines and volcanic sandy
terraces.

of National Parks is to
preserve the archipela
go’s ecosystems. Teide
National Park, situated in
the centre of the island
of Tenerife, is home to the finest vegetation on the Canary Islands
upper plains. Teide National Park, whose average height is more
than 2000 m, is one of the world’s best examples of volcanism.
Created in 1954 in recognition of its exceptional volcanic
landscape and biological value, its 18,990 hectares make it the
largest National Park in the Canary Islands. In 1989 it received a
Category A European Diploma awarded by the Council of Europe,
a distinction that was extended in 1994 and 1999.

MOUNT TEIDE AND LAS CAÑADAS: Mount Teide rises up 3.718 m.
above sea level, making it the highest peak in Spain. It is a strato
volcano edifice situated on the site of a vast ancient caldera-type
depression made up of two semi-calderas separated by the García
Rocks and featuring sinkholes and swallowholes. Mount Teide
peaks at the Pilón de Azúcar or Sugar Loaf, which is still residually
active with steam and sulphur fumaroles at a temperature of 86ºC.
The current edifice of the breathtaking Teide-Pico Viejo stratovolcano
appeared later in the northern section of Las Cañadas Caldera. This
stratovolcano and the caldera are the largest features in the Park.
The only recorded eruption to take place within the boundaries of
the current National Park occurred on the slopes of the Pico Viejo
or Chaorra in 1798 and lasted for three months, forming the
so-called Narices del Teide – the “Nostrils of Mount Teide”. Las
Cañadas Circus is one of the world’s largest calderas. Elliptical in
shape, it is 16 km. across
at the widest point and
10 km across at the
narrowest and boasts a
perimeter of 45 km. The
section that is currently
visible runs for some
23 km., as the northern
section was buried by
later eruptions, some of
which resulted in the
formation of Mount Teide,
whose lavas run down to
the base of the ravine.

most interesting wildlife group in the park, especially insects: the
Park is home to more than 700 species, most of which are endemic
and of immense scientific value. The Park does not boast a large
number of vertebrates, although particularly worth looking out for
are the Gallotia Galloti lizard, the rabbits and several wild cats.
Birdlife to be seen in the Park includes crows, French partridges,
rock pigeons, kestrels, woodchat shrikes, pipits, chiffchaffs, Teide
bluebirds (Fringilla Teydea) and bluetits (Parus caeruleus teneriffae).
FLORA AND FAUNA: The plant world is another of the outstanding
features of this National Park, where plant species have adapted to
the harsh living conditions of high altitudes, intense sunlight,
extreme temperature variations and lack of moisture. The Park is
home to 139 species; 71% are endemic to the Canary Islands, 40%
are endemic to the Parks ecosystem and 22% can only be seen in
the park itself. FAUNA: Invertebrates unquestionably make up the
FLORA. Endemic to the Canary Islands: Teide White Broom
(Spartocytisus Supranubius), Teide Wallflower: (Erysimum scopa
rium) with white and violet flowers, cat mint (Nepeta teydea), with
purple flowers. Wall lettuce (Tolpis webbii), this yellow-flowered
plant grows in dry heathlands. Endemic to the Canary Island
uplands: Teide bugloss (Echium Wildpretii) Boraginaceae with a
pyramid-shaped inflorescence of red flowers that can grow to a
height of 3 metres. Teide daisy (Argyranthemum Teneriffae) with
yellow and white flowers.

Close by stand the NATIONAL PARADOR HOTEL and the CAÑADA
BLANCA VISITOR CENTRE. This is also the site of Los Azulejos rock
formation, with its eye-catching shades of green caused by its high
hydrous ferric oxide content. Lava from successive eruptions has
filled vast areas of the ancient caldera with a wide range of volcanic
materials, creating a spectacular, albeit somewhat “chaotic”
landscape, featuring rounded volcanoes and shades of yellow and
white, the result of the accumulated pumice stone, as in the case
of the popular “Mustard Mountain”. On occasions, the rivers of
lava form vast fields of slag
known as Malpaíses or
“badlands”, whilst on others
they run downhill, covering
older volcanoes and forming
tongues. Others break up
into huge blocks of shiny
black volcanic obsidian glass.

El Portillo is a large mansion containing a number of bars and
restaurants that are open throughout the day and a visitor centre
(close to El Portillo crossroads) that is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The centre features a recreation of a volcanic tube, with interactive
elements, photo and backlit wall panels, a video room, bookstore
and lecture hall showing an audiovisual display (15 min).
Admission to the visitor centre, the adjacent garden and the iti
nerary service are all free. The garden lying adjacent to the Visitor
Centre covers 4 hectares and was created to display, care for and
breed the Park’s autochthonous flora. It is home to more than 75%
of the Park’s major species.

CULTURAL TOUR: Next to Plaza de La Constitución stands the
Convent of Nuestra Señora de Gracia, today converted into a
Culture Centre, and the Church of San Agustín; the Victoria
Garden with its elegant walkways and the Mausoleum to the
Marquis of la Quinta Roja, the work of Adolph Coquet; and the
headquarters of the Liceo Taoro, a historicist building are also well
worth a visit. The Town Hall is built in Neo-classical style.
The Church of La Concepción is rightly considered the finest
example of Baroque architecture in the Canary Islands and is well
worth a closer look. Equally fascinating is the Convent of San
Benito de Abad, which today houses the Iberoamerican Craft
Museum, which boasts a fascinating collection of popular art
exhibits from America, Spain and the Philippines, and offers an
insight into Canary Island crafts. Local crafts also feature strongly
at Casa Torrehermosa, headquarters of the island-based company
Artesanía-Artenerife as well as at other centres in the city. The
so-called Casa de los Balcones
or “Balcony House”, the work
of the sculptor Estévez, make
up some of the most outstan
ding examples of traditional
architecture in the Canary
Islands. One of these houses is

the headquarters of the American and Spanish Craft Archives.
Also worth a visit are the water mills, some of which are still
working, and the Church of San Juan Bautista, in Villa de Arriba.
GASTRONOMY: The municipality’s extensive vineyards produce
excellent wines. Indeed, the Valle de La Orotava designation of
origin is steadily consolidating the reputation of these excellent
red and white wines.
HANDYCRAFT: La Orotava’s long-standing tradition and reputation
as one of the most important craft centres in the Canary Islands is
still in tact. Indeed, the town is renowned for the quality, variety
and production levels of its crafts. The most typical products
include hand-rolled tobacco, traditional costumes, baskets,
hampers and knives, etc. Particularly worthy of mention is the local
openwork and embroidery. Visitors can admire the local people at
work at the following sites: La Casa de Los Balcones (Balcony
House), La Casa del Turista (Tourist Centre), the Spanish and
American Craft Archive. Other sites include the Iberoamerican
Craft Museum, Casa Torrehermosa, the Ethnographic Museum of
the Guanches, the Rug Museum, etc.

de La Cruz, standing on
the island’s north coast at
the foot of Mount Teide,
is a cosmopolitan city
whose
long-standing
experience in the tourist
industry goes back over a

CANDELARIA
DESCRIPTION: The founding and later deve
lopment of the town of Candelaria can be
attributed to religious reasons. Its origins are
linked to the Virgen de Candelaria, wor
shipped by the natives prior to the conquest
and later declared patron saint of the islands.
Indeed, the presence of the image of the
Virgen de Candelaria on Tenerife dates back
to before the conquest of the island. It was in
1390 or 1391 when the Virgin appeared before
two shepherds from Menceyato de Güimar,
the home of the Guanche people’s Mencey, or
ruler, Acaymo, who were standing on a rock
on Chimisay Beach. “As she was blocking the path of their animals,
they waved their arms, asking her to stand aside (the fact that she
was a woman on open land prevented them from addressing her
directly). Yet the image remained motionless, and so one of them
tried to throw a stone at her, but was unable to move his arm. The
other went up to the Virgin and tried to cut off one of her fingers,
but instead the wounds were inflicted on him. They told their tale
to their ruler, who went to
admire the vision for himself.
He ordered the shepherd to
take the image to their home.
On doing so, both were
miraculously cured. Later,
Antón,
a
Christianised
Guanche, transferred the
image
to
the
sacred
Achibinicó Cave for safe
keeping”. Today, that cave is
known as San Blas, and was
the site of the first Catholic temple to be built on the island. That
first temple, completed in 1672, boasted a magnificent altarpiece
which was destroyed by fire in February 1789. In December 1948
the local press recorded the start of work on the superb church we
can admire today: a classical three nave design with transept. The
original image, together with other major works, disappeared
during the floods of 1826. The current statue is by Fernando
Estévez, and dates back to 1827.
CULTURAL TOUR: The most popular attraction is the Basilica of
Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, built by popular subscription.
It houses murals by José Aguiar and paintings by Martín González.
It stands in Plaza de la Basílica which boasts a monumental bronze
statue representing the Guanche monarchs that ruled the island.
To one side, and facing the sea, is San Blas Cave San Blas
(Achibinicó) the valley’s first parish. Perched on the top of the hill
is the quarter known as Santa Ana, with a church of the same name
and the first part of the town to be inhabited. Its historic buildings
form a charming group. Particularly worthy of note is the Town
Hall, formerly the residence of the island’s governors during the
festivities. The street known as La Arena is the commercial hub of
the town, packed with shops, restaurants and banks.
FESTIVITIES: Twice a year, during the religious festival (2 February)
and the popular festivities (15 August), locals and visitors alike flock
from all over the island to Candelaria to pay tribute to the patron
saint. Dressed in animal skins, participants re-enact the discovery of
the Virgin by the shepherds and the miracles that she has performed.

SANTA CRUZ
DESCRIPTION: Santa Cruz lies in the northeast of the island,
covering an area of 151 sq. km. It has been the joint capital of the
archipelago with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria since 1927. Originally
Santa Cruz had no clearly defined urban layout; it was merely a
huddle of groups of houses surrounded by land. Today the city
transmits a warm and welcoming image, preserving the colonial
charm of its historical buildings, interspersed with colourful
flowerbeds at every turn. The city enjoys a pleasant climate with an
average temperature of 22º C throughout the year.
CULTURAL TOUR: Santa Cruz boasts
numerous buildings that are well worth a
visit, including several institutional
headquarters, such as the Islands’
Government, Santa Cruz City Hall, the
Government Representative’s Offices,
the Military Headquarters or the Canary
Island Parliament. There are also several
noteworthy religious buildings, such as
the Church of La Concepción, built in the
16th century, of the Church of San Jorge,
one of the oldest on the island and which

until 1990 was an Anglican
chapel. Chapels such as
San Telmo, the city’s oldest
building, is typical of the
period immediately follo
wing the conquest of the
island, and was built in the
mid 16th century in honour
of the patron saint of
sailors. Also worth a visit is
the Chapel of Regla, founded in 1643 and dedicated to Nuestra
Señora de Guadalupe, and which was used as a garrison for San
Juan Castle, one of the city’s most outstanding historical buildings.
Other examples include the Cruz de Los Caídos (the Cross of the
Fallen), a monument standing in the centre of Plaza de España and
which pays tribute to those who died during the Spanish Civil War.
Santa Cruz is a city full of delightful spots – squares, parks and
tree-lined walks – that are ideal for a gentle stroll. Highlights
include García Sanabria Park, Santa Cruz’s finest open space, with
more than 200 plant species from all over the world, and covering
more than 70.000 sq. m. Each year this park hosts the Regional
Flower and Plant Exhibition. One of the city’s most romantic spots
is Plaza del Príncipe. Also not to be missed is the tree-lined walk
way known as the Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena, created in
1787. Plaza de España, where the monument to the fallen stands,
is the site of Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s world famous carnival. Plaza
de la Candelaria, at the start of Calle Castillo, is surrounded by
numerous buildings such as the Charter House, the Casino and
the Islands’ Chamber of Commerce.
FESTIVITIES: Leisure and cultural activity in the city is practically
non-stop throughout the year. Each year the capital of Tenerife
hosts Europe’s most spectacular Carnival, and the second most
important in the world. Declared a Festival of International Tourist
Interest by the Secretary of State for Tourism on 18 January 1980,
this is the island’s greatest festival. The Carnival is a celebration of
humour and public-spiritedness in which fantasy, colour and joy
are present both night and day. The people of Tenerife, and the

thousands of visits that flock to the city from all over the world,
delight in the fun and good humour that characterises the carnival
in Santa Cruz.
NATURE: Santa Cruz extends beyond the actual city, and also
includes a series of towns and settlements. Santa Cruz also boasts
beaches and woods, cliffs and valleys, recreation areas and nature
reserves.
To the north of the city we find the Anaga Massif, whose outstanding
ecological value has earned it the status of a Nature Park, and also
a Countryside Park.

The Anaga Mountains are truly unique, running along the narrowest
section of Tenerife and rising up sharply from sea level to a
thousand metres. From this central range a series of plateaus and
deep ravines run down to the coast, creating a range of microcli
mates and boasting a wide range of endemic flora. The Anaga
Massif, the result of a period of intense volcanic activity, date back
6.5 million years and is one of the few world reserves of laurisilva
forests, which dates back to the Tertiary Age and which represents
a vital resource for the supply of water to the entire area.
Anaga is also the ideal site from which to admire the Sea of Clouds,
a meteorological landscape that forms on the slopes of the
mountains as a result of the trade winds, the frequent mists and
the high degree of humidity. The landscape has been humanised
by agriculture, livestock and fishing activities. The green landscape
is peppered with the white-washed buildings that form the various
settlements and villages scattered through the Anaga Massif.

Catalina and Santa Clara boast fine polychrome Mudejar coffered
ceilings. The Sanctuary of el Cristo de La Laguna houses a large
embossed silver altarpiece, the image of Cristo de la Laguna, the
most popular effigy of the Crucifixion in the Canary Islands and
the finest collection of religious imager in the Archipelago.
La Laguna preserves its original urban layout, as can be seen from
the famous city plans that date back to the late 16th century. An
almost rectangular layout that undoubtedly influenced the urban
planning of numerous cities in the New World, given the close
links between the islands and America following the discovery. La
Laguna is a city characterised by its towers, and pealing bells, calling
the faithful to worship. The square Concepción Tower is one of
already celebrated
its fifth centenary. It
was founded in 1496
by the conqueror
and first Adelantado
– or military gover
nor – of the Canary
Islands

The name La Laguna
comes from a small
lagoon of seasonal waters that formed in the Aguere Valley to the
northeast of the island, just over 600 metres above sea level, and
protected by a wide curve of mountains that are home to abundant
vegetation, the Canary Islands Pine and laurisilva forest, plus
several of the archipelago’s other autochthonous species.
It was the first settlement on the island, and the site chosen for the
capital by the military governor Alonso Fernández de Lugo, who
was anxious to become its mayor. The choice of an inland location
provided protection from pirates and favoured the creation of a
communications hub.
The city enjoyed spectacular growth. Less than a quarter of a
century after it was founded, La Laguna boasted a far larger
population and greater prosperity than any other town in the
Canary Islands. La Laguna has been declared a World Heritage City.

WHAT TO VISIT: The capital, Santiago del Teide, is situated at the
highest part of the municipality. The town centre boasts fine
examples of both rural and religious architecture. The architectural
and religious treasure of the town is the Old Church, or the
Chapel of Santiago,
the oldest in the
area, dating back to
1550 (in Valle de
Arriba). The Church
of San Fernando Rey
is also of consider
able
architectural
interest.
DESCRIPTION: Teno Countryside Park covers 8063 hectares and
much of the municipality of Buenavista. This park makes up one of
the so-called paleo-islands (ancient islands) of Tenerife, as it stands
on an ancient massif
which in some parts is
more than 7 million years
old. The cliffs known as El
Fraile and Los Gigantes are
of immense biological and
geological value, and also
offer some truly spectacu
lar landscapes. The cliffs
may be active (as in the
case of Los Gigantes) or
inactive following the
appearance of the so-called Lower Islands, which include the
municipalities of Buenavista, Garachico, Los Silos and El Tanque.
OTHER RECOMMENDED SITES: Farmers’ Market: Sale of local
produce. Saturday and Sunday mornings.
NATURE: The volcanic landscape contrasts sharply with the vine
yards and fig plantations, the flowering almond trees, tomato
plants and autochthonous flora. Chinyero Volcano: Chinyero regi
stered the most recent eruption on Tenerife. It began on 18
November 1.909 and lasted for 10 days. However, the amount of
lava the volcano spewed out was the lowest of all the eruptions
registered to date in the Canary Islands. Chinyero rises up 1.560 m.
above sea level and lies to the northeast of Pico Viejo and to the
east of Santiago Valley. On the road to the town of Masca visitors
can stop to admire the views at the Cherfe Viewpoint. The
Santiago Valley gorge stands 1.100 m. above sea level.

WHAT TO VISIT: The village of Masca nestles in the majestic
slopes of the Teno Massif, creating a harmonious landscape made
up of built and environmental heritage.
HISTORY: Prior to the conquest of the island of Tenerife, Masca
had a large Guanche population, as proven by the large number of
sites concealed in this area. In 1503 Alonso Fernández de Lugo, the
conqueror and governor of Tenerife, granted Diego, the last
Mencey - or ruler - of Adeje the rights to this ravine with its lands
and water. Since then and right up until the 1980s when communi
cations underwent a vast improvement, this area suffered a long
period of isolation due to its geographical conditions. This
breathtakingly beautiful valley opens up onto the sea with a truly
impressive ravine.
TENO POINT: A natural viewpoint of immense environmental
value from which to admire the spectacular El Fraile and Los
Gigantes cliffs, built up from the ancient rivers of lava that the sea,
wind and time have gradually shaped.

NATURE: Masca Ravine is undoubted
ly one of the finest examples of this
slow but relentless process. FLORA
AND FAUNA: It boasts an abundance
of species of flora and fauna. Its
greatest biological treasure is the
“laurisilva” at Monte del Agua, one of
the principal strongholds of this
community on the island. It also
boasts extensive lower heathlands
covered with broom, and xeric
communities of tabaiaba (euphorbia
regis-jubae) and thistles. Teno Massif
has been declared a Special
Protection Zone for birds, thanks to
its wealth of wildlife, including the sparrow hawk, laurel pigeon
and Bolle’s pigeon. Teno is also the last existing haven on the island
for species such as the fishing eagle and the Barbary falcon.

GARACHICO
DESCRIPTION: Garachico was
founded in 1496, when the mili
tary governor Fernández de
Lugo granted large areas of
lands to the Genoa-born
Cristóbal de Ponte, considered
to be the founder of the current
town and port of Garachico.
Thanks to its privileged loca
tion, vessels would seek shelter
in its bay, turning it into the
island’s major port during the 16th and 17th centuries. It was here
that cargo destined for the north such as wine and sugar were
loaded. From here vessels would set sail for Yucatan, Rio de la
Plata, Flanders, England, France and Angola. These same vessels
would bring back English cloth, works of art, eastern spices and
French fabrics, etc. A cosmopolitan town sprang up around the
port that was home to traders and merchants and enjoyed
outstanding prosperity until the early 18th century.
Yet all this wealth and activity would dramatically disappear follo
wing the disastrous 1.706 volcanic eruption that began on 5 May
and lasted until 13 June, bringing life to a sudden halt. Not only
houses, palaces and churches vanished, but also the port, the
town’s principal source of wealth, was blocked by the relentless
fury of the volcano. The island authorities diverted all the
Garachico trade to the port of Santa Cruz. As trading was no longer
a possibility, the inhabitants turned their hand to farming and fishing.
WHAT TO VISIT: The Convent of San Francisco de Asis, with its
two elegant cloisters, situated opposite the roundabout of the
same name, is a lively cultural centre that houses the town’s museum
and exhibition hall. The Church of San Francisco forms part of this
same complex, which boasts numerous superb sculptures. Close
by stands the Parish Church of Santa Ana, undoubtedly one of the
finest religious buildings in the Canary Islands. Facing the Rock,
which silently stands guard over the town, the cobbled streets take
us to other historic sites such as the Palace of the Ponte Family, the

the 16th and 17th centuries the Port of San Marcos was a major
shipbuilding centre due to the abundance of local timber and the
presence of the Portuguese, who contributed their ship making
skills and know-how.
WHAT TO VISIT: The opulent and prosperous past of Icod can be
seen from the civil and religious architecture of the old quarter.
The Church of San Marcos Evangelista, standing in the elegant and
welcoming Plaza de Lorenzo Cáceres, marks the centre of the city.
This church is one of the finest examples of religious art in the
Canary Islands, and its rich heritage includes the Filigree Cross,
made in Havana in the mid 18th century and considered to be the
biggest and finest objects of its type in the world. Plaza de la Pila
and the surrounding buildings are renowned as one of the finest
monumental complexes to be seen on the island. The Church of
San Agustín, Plaza de León Huerta, the Franciscan Convent of
Espíritu Santo with its Chapel dedicated to Nuestra Señora de Las
Dolores and the Chapel of Las Angustias, are just a few examples
of the many attractions to be discovered in the city’s historic quarter.
NATURE: Icod is characterised by its lush green forests of Canary
Island pines and its rugged coastline dotted with caves and cliffs.
Also worth looking out for is the fine black sandy beach of San
Marcos, the world’s longest volcanic tube known as the Cueva del
Viento or Wind Cave. Together, all these features form a mosaic of
natural wonders to be seen and admired in Icod de los Vinos. Yet
undoubtedly the most splendid of them all is the thousand-year-old
DRAGON TREE.
DESCRIPTION: Situated in the northeast of Tenerife, Icod de Los
Vinos is named after the region’s principal crop, the vine, although
the area is also rich in other types of
produce, such as vegetables, pota
toes and fruit trees. Yet the banana is
undoubtedly the most important of
all, with plantations situated close to
the coast on terraces overlooking
the sea. Fishing is also an important
source of income for many of its
residents, and San Marcos Beach is
the local hub for this activity. During

endemic to the Macaronesia islands. A living fossil from the
Tertiary Age which has survived on
the archipelago through the ages,
protected from the harsh weather

boasts the oldest specimens. The

Drago Tree of Icod, also known as the “Drago Milenario” or
thousand-year old Drago Tree, is considered to be the oldest living
specimen (dating back around 800 years). It is also the largest, with
a perimeter of 12 metres and a height of 17 metres. The Drago
dates back to ancient times, and mention was made of this tree
in the chronicles relating the conquest of the islands. History has
it that the natives of these islands used its resin as a dye or for
medicinal purposes.

ARONA:
BESCHREIBUNG: Die Stadt Arona ist der
Hauptort und politische Sitz dieses
Gemeindebezirks, dessen Verwaltung im
hiesigen Rathaus untergebracht ist, das sich
an der Plaza del Cristo neben der Kirche San
Antonio Abad erhebt. Die Straßen von Arona
spiegeln die traditionelle Atmosphäre der
kanarischen Kultur wieder, die schmalen
gepflasterten Gassen, die im typisch
kanarischen Stil erbauten Häuser und die
natürliche Umgebung geben dem Ort sein
ländliches Gepräge und verleihen ihm seinen
ganz eigenen Charme. Dieser historische Ort
(dessen Altstadtkern zum schützenswerten
Kulturgut erklärt wurde) empfängt seine
Besucher mit seiner ganzen architektonischen
und landschaftlichen Pracht, die in früheren Zeiten den

KULTURELLE BESICHTIGUNGEN

Aronas architektonisches Juwel ist der Platz, auf dem sich die
Kirche San Antonio Abad erhebt, ein einschi
ffiger Bau, dessen Ursprung auf eine alte
Kapelle aus dem 18. Jahrhundert zurückgeht.
Die Nüchternheit und Einfachheit der
Fassade werden aufgewogen durch die
Steinhauerkunst am Rundbogen und
Giebelabschluss des Gebäudes. Im Inneren
findet sich am Ende des einzigen Schiffes ein
schöner Altaraufsatz aus polychromem Holz,

VILAFLOR
BESCHREIBUNG: Nach der
Eroberung Teneriffas (1496)
wurde Vilaflor ab dem Jahr
1501 dafür bekannt, dass sich
hier die Eroberer niederließen,
denen
der
Adelantado
(Statthalter) Fernández de Lugo
Ländereien in diesen Bergen
von Chasna schenkte. Sie nahmen ein ursprünglich von
Ureinwohnern bewohntes Gebiet in Besitz, dessen Grenzen weit
über den heutigen Gemeindebereich hinausgingen: dabei
handelte es sich um das Guanchenreich “Menceyato de Abona“.
Der Legende nach stammt der Name Vilaflor vom Ausruf des
Kastiliers Pedro de Bracamonte, der bezaubert von der Schönheit
einer Ureinwohnerin unablässig wiederholte “Vi la flor de
Chasna“, d.h. “Ich sah die Blume von Chasna!“ Vilaflor war Zielort
zahlreicher Wissenschaftler, Kranker und Reisender, die von Villa
de la Orotava über den Weg namens Camino Real de Chasna
hierher kamen, um das gesunde Klima und behagliche Leben
dieses kleinen Städtchens zu genießen. Dieser historische Ort hat
bis heute seinen ländlichen Charakter bewahrt und liegt eingebettet
in einer Landschaft aus Kiefernwäldern, Bergen, Schluchten und
mit fruchtbarem Vulkansand bestreuten Feldern.

in die Vergangenheit; inmitten einer Vielzahl von Gebäuden im
traditionellen kanarischen Architekturstil heben sich die Kirche
San Pedro de Chasna und die Kapelle San Roque durch ihre beson
dere Schönheit und ihr hohes Alter hervor. Die einschiffige Kirche
San Pedro wurde Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts im kanarischen Stil
erbaut und besitzt eine vom Mudejar-Stil beeinflusste
Kassettendecke; im Inneren bewahrt sie Heiligenfiguren von
hohem künstlerischen Wert, wie den aus Alabaster gehauenen San
Pedro aus der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts.
Vilaflor verehrt die Figur des Hermano Pedro de Bethencourt, der
bis heute sein Wirken fortsetzt und 1980 von Papst Johannes Paul II.
selig gesprochen wurde, bevor ihn derselbe Papst im Jahr 2000 in
Guatemala heilig sprach.
WEITERE SEHENSWÜRDIGKEITEN: Am Ortsausgang von
Vilaflor, in Lomo Grande, wachsen zwei großartige Exemplare der
kanarischen Kiefer “Pinus Canariensis“, denen man die Namen
Pino Gordo und Madre del Agua gegeben hat. Diese jahrhun
dertealten Bäume sind sechzig bzw. siebzig Meter hoch und haben
einen Umfang von 11 bzw. 8 Metern.
NATIONALPARK VON TEIDE
DER TEIDE NATIONALPARK ERBE DER MENSCHHEIT
KULTURELLE BESICHTIGUNGEN Vilaflor ist eine der höchstgele
gensten Gemeinden Spaniens (1.400 Meter über dem
Meeresspiegel) und der Besuch des Ortskerns wird zu einer Reise
BESCHREIBUNG: Mit einem Netz von Nationalparks auf den
Kanarischen Inseln versucht man die charakteristischen Ökosys
teme zu erhalten. So beheimatet der Teide Nationalpark, der in der
Mitte der Insel Teneriffa liegt, das beste Vegetationsvorkommen
der sogenannten supramediterranen Stufe. Mit einer durchschnitt
lichen Höhe von mehr als 2.000 Metern bietet uns dieser
Nationalpark eines der weltweit spektakulärsten Beispiele für
Vulkanismus. Er wurde 1.954 in Würdigung der Einzigartigkeit
seines vulkanischen und biologischen Reichtums gegründet und
ist mit 18.900 Hektar der größte Nationalpark der Kanaren. 1.989
wurde er vom Europarat mit dem Europäischen Diplom in seiner
höchsten Kategorie “A” ausgezeichnet und die Gütigkeit dieses
Diploms wurde sowohl 1.994 als auch 1.999 verlängert.

DER TEIDE UND LAS CAÑADAS: Der Teide ist mit seinen 3.781
Metern über dem Meeresspiegel der höchste Gipfel Spaniens. Es
handelt sich um ein
vulkanisches Gefüge des
Typs Stratovulkan, das
auf einer alten riesigen
kesselförmigen Senke
ruht, die von zwei
Halbkratern
gebildet
wird, welche durch die
Roques de García voneinander getrennt sind und durch Einstürze
und Zusammenbrüche entstanden sind. Der Teide gipfelt im Pilón
de Azúcar, der noch heute eine Resttätigkeit in Form von 86 Grad Cº
heißen Fumarolen und Solfataren aufweist.
Im nördlichen Teil des Kraters der Las Cañadas formte sich später
das aktuelle Gefüge des imponierenden Stratovulkans Teide - Pico
Viejo. Dieser Stratovulkan und der Krater bilden die
Hauptstrukturen des Parks. Der einzige historisch datierte
Ausbruch ereignete sich 1.798 innerhalb der heutigen Grenzen des
Nationalparks an den Hängen des Pico Viejo oder Chaorra; dieser
Ausbruch währte drei Monate und formte die sogenannten
Narices del Teide (Nasen des Teide). Der Circo de Las Cañadas ist
einer der größten Krater der Welt. Er besitzt eine elliptische Form,
seine längste Achse erreicht 16 km, die kürzeste Achse misst 10 km
und der Umfang beträgt 45 km Was diesen Letzten betrifft, so misst
der heute sichtbare Teil nur etwa 23 Kilometer, denn die Nordwand
wurde von späteren Ausbrüchen verschüttet, die wiederum zur
Bildung des Teide geführt haben, dessen Lava bis zum Fuß des
Steilhangs gelangt ist.
FLORA UND FAUNA: Einen weiteren Höhepunkt bildet die einzi
gartige Vegetation des Nationalparks, wo sich die verschiedenen
Arten völlig an die extremen Lebensbedingungen wie die
Höhenlage, die starke Sonneneinstrahlung, die großen
Temperaturschwankungen und den Mangel an Feuchtigkeit
angepasst haben. Die FLORA wird repräsentiert von 139 Arten,
wobei es sich bei 71% um endemische Pflanzen der Kanaren
handelt; 40% sind endemische Arten des Ökosystems, das der Park
repräsentiert und 22% sind kanarische Endemiten, die nur hier im
Parks selbst vorkommen.

FAUNA: Die interessanteste Fauna des Parks sind die wirbellosen
Tiere und innerhalb dieser Gruppe die Insekten, von denen es
mehr als 700 Arten gibt, die in ihrer Mehrheit Endemiten von
großem wissenschaftlichen Wert sind. Die Vielfalt des Parks an
höheren Tierarten ist beschränkt: erwähnenswert sind die
Blaukehlige Eidechse (Gallotia g. galloti), das Kaninchen und einige
wilde Katzen. Zu den hier lebenden Vogelarten gehören unter
anderem: Rabe, Klippenhuhn, Felsentaube, Falke, Königswürger,
Zilpzalp, Teidefink (Fringilla Teydea) und Blaumeise (Parus
caeruleus teneriffae).
FLORA: Kanarische Endemiten:
Teide-Ginster (Spartocytisus Supra
nubius), Teide-Lack “Alhelí del
Teide”: (Erysimum scoparium) mit
weißen und violetten Blüten, TeideKatzenminze (Nepeta teydea): mit
pupurfarbenen Blüten. Tolpis (Tolpis
webbii): sie hat gelbe Blüten und
wächst auf altem “Malpaís“ (d.h.
schlechter Boden). Endemiten der
supramediterranen
Höhenstufe:
Rotblühender Natternkopf (Echium
Wildpretii). Diese Boraginaceae mit
pyramidenförmig
angeordnetem
rotem Blütenstand kann bis zu 3
Metern hoch werden. Teide.-Margarite
(Argyranthemum Teneriffae) mit
weißen
und
gelben
Blüten.
Besenrauke (Descurainia Lasiospermus);
Behaarter Federkopf (Pterocephalus
lasiospermus) mit rosafarbenen
Blüten. Endemiten des National
parks: Teide-Veilchen (Viola cheiran
thyfolia), das in den Höhen des
Guajara und an den Hängen des
Teide bis fast zum Gipfel wächst; dies
verleiht ihm den Ehrenplatz der
Pflanze, die in den höchsten Lagen

wächst. Blaublühender Zwerg-Teide-Natternkopf (Echium
Auberianium); es ist niedriger als die rote Variante und wächst nur
in der östlichen Hälfte des Parks. Teide Katzenminze (Nepeta teydae
Var. Albiflora), eine Albino-Variante der Katzenminze. GuanchenRosenstrauch (Bencomia Stipulata), von diesem äußerst seltenen
Rosenstrauch gibt es nur etwa 50 Exemplare. Silberdistel
(Stemmacantha cynaroides): diese Art ist weiterhin vom Aussterben
bedroht. Klebrige Drüsenfrucht (Adenocarpus viscosus Var. viscosus),
es handelt sich um eine Fabaceae mit gelben Blüten.
HOTEL PARADOR NACIONAL UND BESUCHERZENTRUM
CAÑADA BLANCA
In der Nähe liegen das staatliche Hotel PARADOR NACIONAL und
das BESUCHERZENTRUM CAÑADA BLANCA. Hier befindet sich
die Felsformation Los Azulejos, die sich durch ihren auffälligen
grünen Farbton hervorhebt,
der durch den Gehalt an
Eisenhydrat bedingt ist. Die
Lavaströme aus den vers
chiedenen
Ausbrüchen
haben große Flächen des
alten Kraters mit vulka
nischem Material aller Art
gefüllt, was zur Bildung
dieser atemberaubenden Landschaft mit ihrem “chaotischen“
Aussehen geführt hat. So kann man Vulkane mit runden Formen
und gelblichen und weißen Schattierungen bewundern, die wie
im Falle der Montaña Mostaza auf die Ansammlung von Bimsstein
zurückzuführen sind. Die Lavaströme formen manchmal
Schlackenfelder, die man Malpaíses nennt; andere laufen hangab
wärts oder legen sich als Zungen über ältere Vulkane und wieder
andere spalten sich auf und formen enorme Blöcke, wie im Fall des
Obsidians, vulkanischem Glas von schwarzem Glanz.

Die Seilbahnauffahrten zur Endstation La Rambleta beginnen um
9,00 Uhr und enden um 16,00 Uhr, außer bei schlechten

schränkende Bedingungen. So ist der Aufstieg von der
Seilbahnstation zum höchsten Punkt des Kegels NICHT ERLAUBT,
es sei denn, man verfügt über eine spezielle Genehmigung. Der
Aufstieg zu den Aussichtspunkten von La Fortaleza und von Pico
Viejo ist hingegen erlaubt.

El Portillo ist eine Ansiedlung
mehrerer Bars und Restaurants, die
tagsüber geöffnet sind. Hier befindet
sich das Besucherzentrum (ganz in
der Nähe der Kreuzung von El
Portillo), das täglich von 9 bis 16 Uhr
geöffnet ist. Dieses Zentrum bildet
in seinem Inneren eine Vulkanröhre nach, es bietet interaktive

Elemente, von der Rückseite beleuchtete Fototafeln, einen
Videosaal, eine Bücherei und einen Veranstaltungssaal, im dem
eine audiovisuelle Vorführung gezeigt wird (15 Minuten). Der
Besuch des Zentrums sowie der Zugang zum angrenzenden
Botanischen Garten und die Teilnahme an den Wanderungen ist
kostenlos. Der Botanische Garten am Besucherzentrum nimmt
eine Fläche von 4 Hektar ein und wurde angelegt, um die ende
mische Flora des Parks zu zeigen, zu pflegen und fortzupflanzen;
hier sind mehr als 75% der höheren Arten des Parks zu sehen.
LA OROTAVA
BESCHREIBUNG: Das Tal von La Otrava verdient zweifelsohne
den Namen Garten des Teide; es zieht sich von den Hängen des
großen Vulkans bis hinunter zur anmutig geformtem und mit
Fischerbooten gespickten Küste, wo sich dem Auge des Besuchers
oberhalb der Küste ein Ort voller reizvoller Denkmäler und
Naturschönheit bietet. Der Altstadtkern, der in seiner Gesamtheit
zum Kulturdenkmal von nationalem Interesse erklärt wurde,
beherbergt einzigartige architektonische Schätze. In La Otrava hat
man die Traditionen am Leben erhalten und Jahr um Jahr feiert
man hier die althergebrachten Feste von großem kulturellen
Interesse; besonders erwähnenswert sind die Fronleichnamsfeiern
“Corpus Cristi“, für die die Einwohner die Straßen mit eindrucksvollen
Bilderteppichen aus vielfarbigem Vulkansand schmücken.
KULTURELLE BESICHTIGUNGEN: Die Plaza de La Constitución,
neben der sich das heutige Kulturzentrum im ehemaligen Kloster
Convento de Nuestra Señora de Gracia befindet und die zuge
hörige Kirche San Agustín; die Gartenanlage Jardín Victoria mit
eleganten Spazierwegen und das Mausoleum des Marqués de la
Quinta Roja: ein Werk von Adolph Coquet; und das im historizis
tischen Stil erbaute Liceo de Taoro. Das Rathaus, ein Gebäude im
neoklassischen Stil.
Die Kirche La Concepción gilt mit Recht als das schönste Beispiel
des Barockstils auf den Kanaren und lohnt einen ausgedehnten
Besuch genauso wie das Kloster San Benito de Abad, das zum
Museum für iberoamerikanisches Kunsthandwerk umgewandelt
wurde und hochinteres
sante Ausstellungsstücke
der
Volkskunst
aus
Amerika, Spanien und
den Philippinen besitzt;
außerdem kann man hier
das Kunsthandwerk der
Kanaren kennen lernen,
schöne Beispiele dafür
finden sich auch in der
Casa Torrehermosa, dem
Sitz der Inselfirma Artesanía-Artenerife und in anderen
Kunsthandwerkszentren der Stadt. Die sogenannten kanarischen
Balkonhäuser “Casas de Los Balcones” in der Carrera del Escultor
Estévez sind eines der herausragendsten Beispiele für diesen tra
ditionellen kanarischen Architekturstil. In einem dieser

nisches Kunsthandwerk untergebracht. Die Wassermühlen, von
denen einige weiterhin in Betrieb sind und die Kirche San Juan
Bautista im oberen Ortsteil Villa de Arriba sind weitere
sehenswerte Stätten.
GASTRONOMIE: Die ausgedehnten Weinberge der Gemeinde
ermöglichen die Produktion von köstlichen Weinen, deren
Ursprungsbezeichnung Valle de La Orotava für ausgezeichnete
Rot- und Weissweine bürgt.

tendsten Kunsthandwerkszentren des kanarischen Archipels; dies
gilt sowohl für dessen Qualität als auch für seine Vielfalt und das

BESCHREIBUNG:
Der Ort Villa de Candelaria verdankt seine
Entstehung und
Entwicklung einem
religiösen Ereignis. Der Weiler fand seinen
Ursprung im Schutz der Virgen de Candelaria,
die bereits vor der Eroberung durch die
Spanier von den Ureinwohnern verehrt und
später zur Schutzpatronin des Archipels
ernannt wurde. Die Madonnenfigur der
Virgen de Candelaria befand sich bereits vor
der Eroberung auf der Insel Teneriffa. Sie
erschien im Jahr 1390 oder 1391, als sie von
zwei Hirten des Guanchenreichs “Menceyato de Güimar“ auf
einem Felsen am Strand von Chimisay gefunden wurde. “Da sie
dem Weg des Viehs im Weg war, machten sie ihr Zeichen, sie solle
sich zurückziehen (sie konnten sie nicht ansprechen, da es sich um
eine Frau handelte, die sich auf offenem Feld befand). Die Gestalt
aber bewegte sich nicht, so dass einer der Hirten versuchte, sie mit
einem Steinwurf zu treffen, sein Arm aber wurde steif; der Andere
näherte sich der Madonna und ver
suchte, ihr einen Finger abzuschnei
den, dabei fügt er sich die Wunden
jedoch selbst zu. Daraufhin begaben
sich die Hirten zu ihrem Herrscher
und nachdem dieser die Figur voller
Bewunderung aus der Nähe be
trachtet hatte, befahl er den Hirten,
die die Madonna gefunden hatten,
sie in sein Haus zu schaffen. Als sie
diesem Befehl nachkamen, wurden
die Beiden auf wundersame Weise

geheilt. Später wählte Antón, ein zum Christentum bekehrter
Guanche, die Grotte von Achibinicó als Heimstatt der Madonna”.
Diese Höhle, die heute den Namen San Blas trägt, war die erste
katholische Kultstätte der Insel. Die originale Kirche, die 1672 fer
tiggestellt wurde, besaß einen wunderschönen Altaraufsatz, der
im Jahr 1789 durch einen Brand
zerstört wurde. Im Dezember
1948 verkündete die Lokalpresse den Baubeginn der schönen
neuen Kirche, die wir heute bewundern können: sie besitzt die
klassische Struktur mit drei Schiffen und einem Querschiff. Die
ursprüngliche Madonnenfigur ging zusammen mit anderen
wertvollen Werken im Jahr 1826 durch eine Überschwemmung
verloren. Bei der heutigen Schnitzerei handelt es sich um ein 1827
von Fernando Estévanez aus Teneriffa geschaffenes Werk.
KULTURELLE BESICHTIGUNGEN:
Die grösste Sehenswürdigkeit ist die Basilika Nuestra Señora de
Candeleira, deren Bau durch private Spenden ermöglicht wurde.
Im ihrem Inneren sind
Wandbilder von José Aguiar
und Werke des Malers
Martín González zu betrach
ten. Auf dem danebenliegen
den Basilika-Platz steht eine
Bronzedenkmal mit den
Skulpturen der GuanchenHerrscher, die die Insel
regierten; auf einer Seite
zum Meer hin liegt die Höhle
Cueva
de
San
Blas
(Achibinicó), die als erste Kultstätte des Tals gedient hatte. Weiter
oben liegt der Ortsteil Santa Ana mit der gleichnamigen Kirche; es
handelt sich um den ursprünglichen Kern der Gemeinde, der mit
seinen uralten Gebäuden ein malerisches Bild bietet; eine
Sehenswürdigkeit ist das Rathaus, die frühere Herberge des
Inselrates während der Feste. Besonders belebt ist die Calle de la
Arena mit ihren vielen Geschäften, Restaurants und Banken.

von den anderen Inseln strömen die Menschen hierher. In
Tierhäute gekleidet spielt eine Gruppe die Legende nach, vom
Fund der Jungfrau durch die Hirten bis zu ihrer Verehrung

Santa Cruz liegt im Nordosten
der Insel und umfasst eine
Fläche von 151 km2. Seit 1927 ist
sie neben Las Palmas von Gran
Canaria eine der beiden
Hauptstädte des gesamten
Archipels. Ursprünglich hatte
Santa Cruz keine strukturiert
angelegten Strassen, sondern
war eher eine Anhäufung verstreuter Gebäudegruppen, die sich
aus niedrigen Häusern zusammensetzten. Heute bietet die Stadt
ein einladendes und freundliches Bild und neben ihrem
grosstädtischen Charakter hat sie sich mit ihren kolonialen Bauten
den alten Charme erhalten, der untermalt wird durch die
Vielfarbigkeit der Blumen, die aus allen Ecken leuchten. Hier in
der Stadt kann man ein wohltuendes mildes Klima mit einer
ganzjährigen Durchschnittstemperatur von 22º C geniessen.

KULTURELLE BESICHTIGUNGEN: Santa Cruz besitzt eine
Vielzahl von sehenswerten Gebäuden, bei einigen davon handelt
es sich um öffentliche Institutionen, wie der Sitz des Cabildo
Insular (Inselregierung), das Ayuntamiento (Rathaus), die
Subdelegación de Gobierno (Außenstelle der Staatsregierung), die
Capitanía General (Statthalterei) oder das Parlamento de Canarias
(Kanarisches Parlament). Daneben finden wir religiöse Bauten, wie
die Kirche La Concepción, die im 16. Jh. erbaut wurde oder die
Kirche San Jorge, eines der ältesten Gotteshäuser, das bis zum Jahr
1990 eine anglikanische Kapelle war. Es gibt Kapellen wie die des
San Telmo, bei ihr handelt es sich um das älteste Gebäude der
Stadt, erbaut im typischen religiösen Stil der ersten Zeit nach der
Eroberung der Insel; sie wurde Mitte des 16. Jh. zu Ehren des
Schutzheiligen der Seefahrer errichtet. Eine andere Kapelle ist die
Ermita de Regla, 1643 errichtet und Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
geweiht, die als Garnison der Festung Castillo de San Juan diente.
Hervorzuheben sind daneben historische Gebäude wie die
Festung Castillo de San Juan und La Cruz de Los Caidos (Kreuz der
Gefallenen), das Denkmal, das sich im Zentrum der Plaza de
España befindet und den Gefallenen des spanischen Bürgerkriegs
gewidmet ist.
Santa Cruz ist eine Stadt
voller bezaubernder Orte,
Plätze, Parks und Alleen, die
unwiderstehlich
zum
Bummeln
einladen.
Besonders empfehlenswert
sind: Der Park García
Sanabria, die grüne Lunge
von Santa Cruz, nimmt mit
mehr als 200 Pflanzenarten
aus aller Welt eine Fläche
von 70.000 m2 ein. In diesem Park wird alljährlich die regionale
Blumen- und Pflanzenschau veranstaltet. Einer der romantischsten
Orte der Stadt ist die Plaza del Príncipe. Empfehlenswert ist eben
falls ein Bummel über die Allee Alameda del Duque de Santa
Elena, die 1.787 angelegt wurde. Die Plaza de España, wo sich das
Denkmal der Gefallenen erhebt, ist der Hauptschauplatz des
berühmten Karnevals von Santa Cruz de Teneriffe. Ein weiterer
Platz, die Plaza de la Candelaria am Anfang der Calle Castillo, ist
umgeben von sehenswerten Gebäuden wie der Casa de la Carta,
dem Kasino und der Cámara de Comercio Insular (Handelskammer).
FESTE: Das Freizeit- und Kulturangebot umfasst praktisch das
ganze Jahr. Hier in der Hauptstadt von Teneriffa feiert man jedes
Jahr den berühmtesten Karneval von ganz Europa und den
zweitwichtigsten der Welt. Der Karneval, der am 18. Januar 1980
vom Ministerium für Tourismus zum Fest von internationalem
touristischen Interesse erklärt wurde, ist die Hauptfeier der Insel.
Hier bedeutet Karneval ein fröhliches Volksfest voller guter
Stimmung, bei dem der Fantasie freier Lauf gelassen wird und die
Farbenpracht und Freude die Tage und Nächte zum Strahlen bringen.
Die Bewohner Teneriffas geben sich gemeinsam mit Tausenden
von Besuchern aus aller Welt ganz der Ausgelassenheit und dem
fröhlichen Geist hin, die den Karneval von Santa Cruz auszeichnen.
NATUR: Santa Cruz besteht
nicht allein aus der Stadt, son
dern umfasst auch Dörfer und
Gehöfte. Neben der Stadt
bedeutet Santa Cruz auch
Strand und Wald, Steilküsten
und Täler, Vergnügungszonen
und Naturreservate.
Im Norden der Stadt liegt das
Gebirge Macizo de Anaga, das
aufgrund seines hohen ökolo
gischen Werts zum Naturpark
erklärt wurde. Daneben wurde
es als Parque Rural (Landschaftspark) eingestuft. Das Anaga-Massiv
ist einzigartig auf der Welt, es bildet den schmälsten Teil von
Teneriffa und ist ein Naturraum, der vom Meeresspiegel bis auf
1000 Meter Höhe steil ansteigt. Von diesem zentralen Gebirge
gehen steile Felsrücken und tiefe Schluchten aus, die bis zum
Meer verlaufen und spezielle Mikroklimazonen bilden, in denen
zahlreiche endemische Pflanzenarten beheimatet sind. Das
Gebirge von Anaga entstand vor etwa 6,5 Millionen Jahren als
Folge einer Periode intensiver Vulkantätigkeit; es handelt sich um
eine der wenigen Gebiete auf der Welt, wo der Lorbeerwald
(Laurisilva) erhalten blieb; dabei handelt es sich um eine

Vegetationsart, die aus der Tertiärzeit stammt und ein wichtiges
Wasserreservoir für die gesamte Zone darstellt.
In Anaga kann man ausserdem das Wolkenmeer beobachten, eine
“meteorologische Landschaft“, die als Folge der Passatwinde, der
häufigen Nebel und des hohen Feuchtigkeitsniveaus an den
Gebirgshängen entsteht. Die Kulturlandschaft des Gebiets ist von
der land- und viehwirtschaftlichen Aktivität sowie von der Fischerei
geprägt. Die Gehöfte, die über das Macizo de Anaga verstreut
liegen, spicken die grüne Landschaft als kleine weisse Flecken.

LA LAGUNA
BESCHREIBUNG: San Cristobal de La Laguna ist eine Stadt voller
wunderschöner Gegensätze und überraschender Geheimnisse,
von unzählbaren Zeugen ihrer Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. Die
Stadt blickt auf eine 500 jährige Geschichte zurück. Sie wurde 1.496
von dem Eroberer und ersten Statthalter der Kanaren Don Alonso
Fernández de Lugo gegründet. Der Name La Laguna (der See) geht
auf einen kleinen See zurück, der vom Regenwasser gespeist
wurde, das hier im Valle de Aguere zusammenfloss, das etwa 600
Meter über dem Meeresspiegel liegt, geschützt von einem weiten
Gebirgsbogen mit üppigem Pflanzenwuchs wie der kanarischen
Kiefer
oder
dem
Lorbeerwald
sowie
anderen endemischen
Arten des Archipels.
La Laguna war die
erste
städtische
Siedung auf der Insel
und wurde zu ihrer
Hauptstadt, da der
Adelantado
Alonso
Fernández de Lugo
hier seinen Aufenthalt nahm und ihr Statthalter werden wollte. Die
Wahl des Orts im Landesinneren schützte ihn vor den Piraten und
begünstigte seine Entwicklung als Verkehrsknotenpunkt.
Die Stadt erfuhr ein spektakuläres Wachstum. Noch bevor ein viertel
Jahrhundert nach ihrer Gründung verstrichen war, hatte San
Cristóbal de La Laguna eine viel höhere Einwohnerzahl als irgen
dein anderer Ort auf den Kanarischen Inseln erreicht. La Laguna ist
zum Kulturerbe der Menschheit erklärt worden.
KULTURELLE BESICHTIGUNGEN: Jahrhundertlang gab La Laguna
den Ton beim politischen, wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Leben
Teneriffas an. Von der Stadt aus wurde die ganze Insel regiert, bis
es zur in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts zur Bildung der
aktuellen Gemeindeverwaltungen kam. Auf diese Zeit geht die
unverwechselbare Herrschaftlichkeit zurück, die sich in der
Struktur der Stadtanlage, im Charakter der Wohnarchitektur, in

den Glasfronten, den dicken Mauern
und der nüchternen Schönheit der
bedeutendsten
Kirchen
und
öffentlichen Gebäude zeigt. Die
sehenswerten plateresken Fassaden
der Casa del Corregidor, der ehemali
gen Herrenhäuser oder des Palacio
Nava y Grimón bilden die beein
druckendsten Beispiele der zivilen
Architektur der Kanaren.
Unter den öffentlichen Gebäuden
heben sich besonders die Fassade des heutigen Rathauses im
neoklassischen Stil und die zu den historischen Gebäuden des
Rathauskomplexes gehörende Casa de los Capitanes Generales
hervor. Die sehenswertesten Gebäude in der ehemaligen Calle
Real (heute San Agustín) sind La Casa Montañés und La Casa
Lercaro (heute das Historische Museum von Teneriffa) sowie das
ehemalige Instituto Cabrera Pinto, welches ursprünglich ein
Augustinerkloster und der
erste Sitz der Universität
war.
Die
wichtigsten
Denkmäler der religiösen
Architektur
sind
die
majestätische Kathedrale
und
die
Marienkirche
Nuestra Señora de la
Concepción, die erste nach
der Eroberung 1.496 gegrün
dete Kirche der Insel, die
1.947 zum Nationaldenkmal
erklärt wurde. In der Kirche
Santo Domingo ist noch
heute das Taufbecken aus rotem Stein zu sehen, im dem der
Seliggesprochene José de Anchieta, der spätere Missionar in
Brasilien und Gründer der Stadt Sao Paulo getauft wurde. Die
Klausurklöster Santa Catalina y Santa Clara besitzen wunder
schöne polychrome Kassettendecken im Mudejarstil. Im Santuario
del Cristo de La Laguna betet man vor einem riesigen Altaraufsatz
aus getriebenem Silber die Schnitzerei des Cristo de la Laguna an:
es handelt sich um das Bildnis des Gekreuzigten, das auf den

kanarischen Inseln am meisten verehrt wird und den grössten
Schatz der religiösen Bildkunst des ganzen Archipels.
La Laguna hat ihren ursprünglichen städtischen Grundriss erhalten,
genauso wie dieser in einem bekannten Plan vom Ende des 16.
Jahrhunderts aufgezeichnet ist. Aufgrund der engen Beziehungen,
die seit der Entdeckung zwischen den kanarischen Inseln und
Amerika bestanden, wurde der fast perfekte schachbrettartige
Grundriss von La Laguna unzweifelhaft zum Vorbild bei den
Anlagen vieler Städte in der neuen Welt. La Laguna ist die Stadt der
Türme, der Glockentüre, des liturgischen Glockenläutens,... Die
Turm La Concepción mit seinem quadratischen Grundriss ist das
weithin sichtbare architektonische Wahrzeichen der Stadt. San
Cristobal de la Laguna ist ebenfalls eine bedeutende
Universitätsstadt. Die Universität wurde im Jahr 1742 gegründet
und ist damit die Älteste der Kanaren; in den verschiedenen
Fakultäten, Fachbereichen und technischen Hochschulen
studieren 25.000 Studenten.
NATUR: La Laguna besitzt Landschaften von unvergleichlicher
Schönheit, überzogen von der wichtigsten heimischen Flora der
kanarischen Inseln; besonders reizvoll ist die Bergformation des
Monte de las Mercedes, der zum Naturpark von Anaga gehört und
mit seinen alten vulkanischen Formen und Strukturen einen
grossen landschaftlichen Wert darstellt. Die Aussichtspunkte
Miradores de las Mercedes, Cruz del Carmen und Pico del Inglés
bieten atemberaubende Ausblicke auf die umliegenden Inseln.

Kirche San Fernando Rey.
BESCHREIBUNG: Der Naturpark von Teno hat eine Ausdehnung
von 8.063 Hektar und umfasst einen großen Teil des
Gemeindebereichs von Buenavista. Dieser Park bildet eine der
sogenannten “Paleoislas” (alte
Inseln) von Teneriffa; es han
delt sich um eine der ältesten
Formationen, die an einigen
Stellen mehr als 7 Millionen
Jahren alt ist. Die Steilküsten
El Fraile und Los Gigantes sind
ein wahrer Schatz von hö
chstem landschaftlichen, biolo
gischen und geologischen Wert. Diese Steilküsten können (wie im
Fall der Letztgenannten) aktiv sein oder aber sie können restge
blieben sein durch das Entstehen der sogenannten Islas Bajas, der
Name den man den Dörfern Buenavista, Garachico, Los Silos und
El Tanque gegeben hat.
WEITERE SEHENSWÜRDIGKEITEN: Bauernmarkt: Verkauf von
lokalen Produkten. Samstags und Sonntags morgens.
NATUR: Die vulkanische Landschaft bildet einen lebhaften
Kontrast zu den Weinbergen, den Feigenbäumen, den blühenden
Mandelbäumen, Tomatenfeldern und der einheimischen Flora.
Der Vulkan Chinyero: Der Ausbruch des Chinyero war die letzte
der geschichtlichen Eruptionen, die in Teneriffa registriert wurden.
Er begann am 18. November 1909 und dauerte 10 Tage. Der
Ausbruch stieß von allen registrierten Vulkanausbrüche auf den
Kanaren die geringste Lavamenge aus. Der Chinyero erhebt sich
1.560 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel und liegt im Nordwesten des
Pico Viejo und im Osten von Valle Santiago. In Richtung des Dorfes
Masca trifft man auf den Aussichtspunkt Mirador de Cherfe:
Dieser Überhang von Valle Santiago liegt 1.100 Meter über dem
Meeresspiegel.

SEHENSWERTES: Der Weiler Caserío de Masca liegt eingebettet
zwischen den majestätischen Steilhängen des Teno-Massivs und
bildet ein harmonisches Zusammenspiel von Architektur und Natur.
GESCHICHTE: Vor der spanischen
Eroberung der Insel Teneriffa war
Masca ein bedeutendes Guanchen
dorf. Diese Angabe wird durch die
zahlreichen archäologischen Funds
tätten, die dieser Ort birgt, bestätigt.
Im Jahr 1503 übergab Alonso
Fernández de Lugo, Eroberer und
Statthalter von Teneriffa diese
Schlucht mit ihren Ländern und
Gewässern an Diego, den letzten
Guanchenherrscher von Adeje. Von
da an erlebte der Ort bis in die 80er
Jahre, als die Verkehrswege verbe

phischen Bedingungen eine lange Zeit völliger Abgeschiedenheit.
Das wunderschöne Tal öffnet sich in einer atemberaubenden
Schlucht hin zum Meer.
PUNTA DE TENO: Ein natürlicher Aussichtspunkt von hohem
landschaftlichem Wert, von wo aus man die spektakulären
Steilküsten El Fraile und Los Gigantes bewundern kann: das
Ergebnis von sich überlagernden Lavaströmen, deren einzigartige
Formen durch den Einfluss des Meeres, des Windes und der Zeit
modelliert wurden.
NATUR: Die Schlucht von Masca ist zweifelsfrei eins der besten
Beispiele für diesen langsamen Prozess. FLORA UND FAUNA: Die
hier anzutreffende Flora und Fauna ist reich und vielfältig. Ihr
größter biologischer Schatz ist der Lorbeerwald “Laurisilva” des
Monte del Agua; es handelt sich um eines der Hauptvorkommen
dieses Naturjuwels auf der Insel. Darüber hinaus existieren
hier bedeutende Ginstervorkommen und es finden sich
Euphorbien-Gemeinschaften von Wolfsmilchgewächsen sowie
Kandelaberwolfsmilch in den niederen Zonen. Das Teno-Massiv
wurde dank seines Artenreichtums zur besonderen Schutzzone
für Vögel erklärt, wobei die Lorbeertaube, Turquétaube und der
Sperber besonders erwähnenswert sind. Die Gegend von Teno ist
die letzte Zufluchtsstätte der Insel für Vogelarten wie den
Fischadler oder den Berberfalken.

GARACHICO
BESCHREIBUNG: Die Gründung von Garachico erfolgte 1496,
dem Jahr als der Statthalter Fdez. de Lugo weite Zonen des Gebiets
dem Genuesen Cristóbal de Ponte unterstellte, den man als
Gründer des heutigen Ortes und Hafens von Garachico ansehen
muss. Dank seiner privilegierten Lage kamen die Schiffe in seine
Bucht, um vor Unwettern Zuflucht zu suchen und verwandelten
den Ort in den bedeutendsten Hafen der Insel während des 16.
und 17. Jahrhunderts. Hier wurden die Hauptprodukte aus dem
Norden wie Wein oder Zucker verschifft. Die Schiffe segelten nach
Yucatan, Rio de la Plata, Flandern, England, Frankreich und Angola.
Und bei ihrer Ankunft
brachten diese Schiffe
wiederum englisches Tuch,
Kunstwerke, orientalische
Gewürze,
französische
Stoffe, etc. Rings um den
Hafen entstand nach und
nach ein kosmopolitisches
Dorf, in dem sich Händler
und Geschäftsleute ansiedelten, die die Blütezeit des Ortes bis
zum Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts aufrecht erhielten.
Doch aller Glanz und Reichtum verschwanden mit dem unheil
bringenden Vulkanausbruch des Jahres 1706; dieser dauerte vom 5.
Mai bis zum 13. Juni und beendete das opulente Leben der Stadt.
Es verschwanden nicht nur Häuser, Paläste und Kirchen, sondern
die Wut des Vulkans traf auch den Hafen, den Hauptreichtum der
Stadt, der durch den Ausbruch versperrt wurde. Die
Inselbehörden verlegten alle Geschäfte von Garachico in den
Hafen von Santa Cruz. Nachdem der Handel ruiniert war, begannen
die Bewohner, vom Ackerbau und Fischfang zu leben.

Das ehemalige Kloster San Francisco de Asis mit seinen zwei ele
ganten Kreuzgängen, gegenüber dem kleinen Platz desselben
Namens, ist ein geschäftiges Kulturzentrum, in dem ein lokales
Museum und Ausstellungsräume untergebracht sind. Zum
Gebäudekomplex gehört die
Kirche San Francisco, die ein
großes Skulpturerbe besitzt.
Ganz in der Nähe erhebt
sich die Pfarrkirche Santa
Ana, welche ganz zweifels
frei das schönste religiöse
Gebäude der kanarischen

ICOD DE LOS VINOS
BESCHREIBUNG: Im Nordosten Teneriffas gelegen erweist Icod
de Los Vinos mit seinem Namen dem Hauptweinbaugebiet der
Gegend die Ehre. Neben dem Weinbau wird hier eine vielfältige
Landwirtschaft betrieben: Gemüse, Kartoffeln und Obstbäume. In
Küstennähe, in terrassenförmig angelegten Feldern über dem
Meer, ist die Banane das Hauptanbauprodukt. Auch der Fischfang
ist für viele der Bewohner von lebenswichtiger Bedeutung und der
Strand Playa de San Marcos ist Mittelpunkt der Fischerei. Der
Hafen San Marcos erlebte im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert die Blütezeit
des Schiffbaus aufgrund des Holzreichtums der Gebirge und der
Anwesenheit der Portugiesen, die die erforderliche Kunstfertigkeit
im Schiffsbau mit sich brachten.
NATUR: Das Meer kühlte die Magma ab und hinterließ kapriziöse
Formen, die heute zum Baden einladen, wie El Caletón, ein unver
gleichbares Naturschwimmbad. Die Küste ist gespickt mit zahl
reichen kleinen vulkanischen Buchten, die sich über eine Länge
von sechs Kilometern hinziehen.
SEHENSWERTES: In Icod lässt sich noch heute anhand der bür
gerlichen und religiösen Architektur der Altstadt der Überfluss der
Vergangenheit erahnen. Die Kirche San Marcos Evangelista, die an
der eleganten und einladenden Plaza de Lorenzo Cáceres liegt,
bildet den Mittelpunkt der Stadt. Die Kirche ist eines der besten
Beispiele für die religiöse Kunst der Kanaren und unter ihren
zahlreichen Schätzen ist das wunderschöne Kreuz Cruz de
Filigrana zu erwähnen, das
Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts in
La Habana gefertigt wurde;
es gilt als das bedeutendste
und schönste Stück seiner

Der Europa-Schlüssel ist ein universelles System, das Personen mit
Behinderug erlaubt, die entsprechenden WC- Anlagen 365 Tage im Jahr
und 24 Stunden am Tag zu öffnen.
Dieses System wurde in Deutschland geschaffen und hat sich jetz über
die Schweiz, auf Österreich und Spanien (Barcelona und jetzt auch
Teneriffa) ausgedehnt. Insgesamt 6.700 Einrichtungen (Lifte, Toiletten,
Garderoben u.a.) können mit diesem Europa-Schlüssel benutzt werden.
VORAUSSETZUNGEN FÜR DEN EUROPA
SCHLÜSSEL CBF: WO ERHÄLTLICH?
Um den Europa-Schlüssel zu mieten oder zu kaufen, können sich
Personen mit Behinderung an folgende Hotels wenden.
Los Christianos: Kurhotel Marysol, Klinik Vintersol, Las Vistas Kiosk (am
Playa Las Vistas) und Orange Badge (Verleih von Rollstühlen).
Playa de Las Américas: Fanny Supermarket (Parque Santiago I).
GRATISMIETE DES EUROPA-SCHLÜSSELS:
Gegen eine Kaution von 15 Euros erhalten Sie den Schlüssel in den
oben genannten Stationen auch kostenlos mieten
