BIONIC-FINISH ECO – AN ECOLOGICAL AND SUSTAINABLE
ALTERNATIVE TO PERFLUORINATED POLYMERS FOR
HYDROPHOBIZING TEXTILES

BIONIC-FINISH®ECO is a fluorocarbon-free,
water-repellent finish for textiles produced and
marketed by Rudolf GmbH. Several renowned
brands are utilizing this advanced technology
for their hydrophobic outdoor wear. It is the
ecological alternative to conventional durable
hydrophobic finishes based on perfluorinated
polymers. One major point of criticism is that
most of these products contain traces of PFCs2.
Also up till today it is not known whether
perfluorinated polymers could degrade in the
environment forming mobile perfluorinated
compounds.
RUCO-DRY ECO can be applied to all types of
substrates but is mainly used for outdoor textiles.
This PFC-free waterproofing agent has a range of
advantages

The chemical basis of BIONIC-FINISH®ECO is
more
environmentally
friendly
than
conventional durable water-repellent finishes
containing perfluorinated polymers. No
perfluorinated compounds are used for
manufacturing ®RUCO-DRY ECO, which is
the corresponding finishing product used in
the textile mills for producing the BIONICFINISH®ECO textile finish.

In
principle,
RUCO-DRY
ECO
is
biodegradable. However, according to the
OECD test methods, the product cannot be
called easily biodegradable but eliminable.
As the polymeric components will remain
and be effective beyond the life span of the
textile finished with ®RUCO-DRY ECO, this
is reasonable. Polyester fibres are not easily
biodegradable either, but can be recycled
without problems.
According to OECD tests, ®RUCO-DRY ECO
can be easily eliminated from the effluent
(> 80%) and is harmless regarding water
toxicity (EC-50 (bacteria) > 100 mg/l, LC-50
(fish) > 100 mg/l) as well as oral toxicity (LD50 (rat) > 5000 mg/kg).
