Groundwater Remediation on a former Steel Works Site in Lübeck
Groundwater Remediation on a former
Steel Works Site in Lübeck-Herrenwyk,
Germany
Client:
Grundstücksgesellschaft Metallhüttengelände mbH, Lübeck
Engineering Design
and Supervision:
URS WCI Umwelttechnik GmbH, Lübeck
Scope of Works:
Groundwater remediation on an encapsulated site using
sand filtration, activated carbon filtration and heavy metal
adsorption
Contract Period:
October 2001 until end of 2003
The Project:
As part of an earlier remediation program,
the site of the former steel works had been
encapsulated by a vertical cut-off wall and
horizontal capping comprising PVC membranes and a layer of cohesive soil material. In addition, an internal groundwater
control system had been installed. As the
groundwater extracted from the encapsulated site was contaminated with heavy
metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH‘s), it had to be remediated.

The Site:
For the treatment of the contaminated
water, BMU has set up and now operates a
water treatment plant using sand filtration,
activated carbon filtration and heavy metal
adsorption.
Sand filtration is used to separate particular matter. Organic pollutants are removed
from the water by two activated carbon
water filters connected in series. Subsequently, the water is directed through an
heavy metal adsorption unit in which
heavy metal contamination is removed.
The Result:
The entire plant is operated fully automatically (the sand filter for instance is backwashed automatically). Process visualisation by remote data link has been
designed to enable fault messages to be
transmitted via SMS and service personnel
can monitor and/or correct these faults via
remote data transmission.
Sand filter, activated carbon filter and ion adsorption stage
Depending on the water level in the
drainage channel and in the encapsulated
zone, between 0 and 15 m3 of water are
pumped out by a pumping well and
cleaned in the treatment plant.
