Within the tour this will be a further stop in China for the design exhibition of the 180 most important German manufactories. Curated by Pascal Johanssen and Katja Kleiss of Direktorenhaus Berlin, this touring exhibition will span several years and continents to show a concentrated collection of German quality production: design objects and manufacturing products, all hand-made in Germany and stretching across all branches. The exclusive selection of exhibits represents the value and future of premium quality production with a commitment to time and handiwork especially against the backdrop of the current trend of mass production and globalisation. Starting in Berlin, the exhibition first moves to St. Petersburg, then goes on to visit cities in Asia, America and the Middle East before returning to Europe once more. The exhibition will be shown in exciting cities and metropolises. For the most part, they will be reached by sea, but also by land. The idea of the tour itself is inspired by the “walz” or “journeyman years” – the journey taken on by apprentices of German trades after completing their apprenticeship, similar to the “Grand Tour” of the European nobility. The journeyman years are a German tradition still followed today, at the occasion of which the travelling craftsmen still wear the traditional garb. W W W. H A N D M A D E - W O R L DTO U R . It is centrally located at the famous Cotai Strip. As one of the most extraordinary luxury hotels worldwide the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel is home to a series of entertainment facilities and high-class restaurants, and, most famously, it contains a highly regarded exhibition hall as well. MACAO As a next stop we will continue our “Handmade in Germany” world tour in Macao. Macao is situated 50 km away from Hong Kong at the outfall of the delta of the pearl river. Until the late 19th century the city was one of the most important international port regions and, especially in the last years, it has developed into a hub of luxury hotels. Besides that, Macao has a notable tradition of manufactories and is very rich with regards to sights that stem from the Portuguese colonial times. The exhibition is shown in the context of the „International Exposition of Intangible Cultural Heritage and Ancient Art” as an autonomous satellite exhibition. Due to the checkered history and its very lively manufactories scene, Macao proves to be an exciting place to present “Handmade in Germany”. W W W. H A N D M A D E - W O R L DTO U R . The reason for this is the historical tradition of German craftsmanship. The training – from apprentice to journeyman to master – is unique in the world; its purpose is to achieve a broad access to traditional knowledge as well as a great depth in the field, which makes handicrafts one of the most diverse and innovative sectors of the national economy. 2 The “Handmade in Germany” exhibition uses selected exhibits to show what an important part handicrafts, including the spirit of artistic movements such as the Werkbund and the Bauhaus, play in Germany’s cultural heritage. “Handmade in Germany” is a journey through the objects and people of modern and traditional Germany. Exhibitors include world-renowned luxury brands, superb manufactories, individual designers and award-winning art studios, such as Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur Berlin, Fürstenberg and Nymphenburg, Gipsformerei der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, Graf von Faber-Castell, Burmester, Koch & Bergfeld, Mayer’sche Hofkunstanstalt and designers like fashion designer Frank Leder. 4 3 1 KPM B er li n 2+3 Graf von Faber- Castell 4 Für stenberg 5 Fi ona B ennett 5 W W W. CO M T H E “OT H E R ” M A D E I N G E R M A N Y The label „Made in Germany“ has a worldwide reputation for quality – this sign of quality, however, mostly marks industrial production. In contrast, the “Handmade in Germany” exhibition signifies products which are created through individual master worksmanship by artists, designers and artisans: Products which take time to be crafted and require a focus on detail from their creators, that lend them a very special aura. The exhibition “Handmade in Germany” shows the sensual side to German production. Not efficiency and engineering genius are centre stage here but shape and idea, the poetic, the numinous and the individuality of the world of objects. Objects are arbiters of cultural norms and values. The carefully selected collection demonstrates the relational structure and the fabric of meaning between objects and people. For the curators of the exhibition this relationship is a pivotal endeavour of our times: since the reasoning of our late capitalistic world, shrunken to a meansend rationality, needs alternatives, which don’t just reduce material things to being marketable “products”. They are an important part of our living environment, with all its impact on quality of life, nurturing and ability to judge. W W W. H A N D M A D E - W O R L DTO U R . After studying law he worked at an innovation research lab at the University of Arts Berlin. In 2005 he started out to represent graphic artists and illustrators for Galerie Johanssen, thereby paving the way for many artists to enter the art market. In 2007, together with Katja Kleiss, he founded the Illustrative, an international biennial for contemporary illustration and graphic arts. After that the gallery moved into new premises at the Direktorenhaus, situated at the Alte Münze in the center of Berlin, which has been established as an exhibition venue for design and contemporary arts and crafts. In 2013 he initiated the “Handmade in Germany” exhibition. Later on he founded the “Deutsche Manufakturenstraße”. Johanssen has published extensively about design research as well as about topics on the intersection of applied and fine arts. He is editor of the magazine “Objects. Journal of Applied Arts” and co-editor of the Guide to German Manufactories. Katja Kleiss is a cultural scientist who works as an art and design advisor for national as well as international companies. She is the project manager of the “Handmade in Germany” world tour and co-edits the magazine „Objects. Journal of Applied Arts“. In addition, Kleiss pursues social design projects that are concerned with including the civil society into construction projects in public spaces. Together with her partner Pascal Johanssen and with the support of investors and various partners, she is currently aiming to transform the area of the Alte Münze in the Mitte district, near the Museum Island of Berlin, into a cultural environment that can provide various exhibitions and workshops for artists and designers. W W W. H A N D M A D E - W O R L DTO U R . CO M D I R E K TO R E N H AU S The touring exhibition has been initiated by the Direktorenhaus together with the society “Freunde des Direktorenhaus”. The Direktorenhaus was founded in 2010 by Pascal Johanssen and Katja Kleiss in Berlin as an exhibition venue for applied arts. Since then they have implemented a series of multifaceted projects on the intersections of art, craft, design and German manufacture production. While, for instance, the “Handmade in Germany”-world tour exhibits product of German manufactories worldwide, the “Deutsche Manufakturenstraße” aims to preserve, conserve and connect regional manufactories through a 2500 km long event road encompassing all 16 German states. The Direktorenhaus is centrally located at the river Spree in the heart of Berlin. www.direktorenhaus.com EXHIBITION VENUE CO N TA C T ADDRESS The Venetian Macao Resort Hotel Estrada da Baia de Nossa Senhora da Esperanca Macao www.venetianmacao.com Exhibition Pascal Johanssen +49 (0)30 27572019 [email protected] Direktorenhaus Am Krögel 2 D-10179 Berlin W W W.
