HOME CARE CORNER
Need a Ride?
Friday, April 22 12:45
Numinous, Unfettered,
Remuneration…..
Can you spell these words
without looking? If so, sign
up for the annual Spelling
Bee! One person will walk
away with a scenic float trip
for 4!
Sign up in binder!
One of the hardest life changes is giving up driving. Sometimes, it is
a temporary change due to an illness or surgery. Sometimes it is a
necessity due to vision loss. And other times it is a conscious decision to stop driving to protect your own safety and those around you.
But giving up driving doesn’t mean giving you have to be a home
body!
One of the newest services of our home care program is to provide
individual transportation for people. Our staff can pick you up and
take you where you want to go in our vehicles. If you would like assistance with shopping, medical appointments or other errands our
professional staff can accompany you. Our vehicles are fully insured
and our staff is insured, bonded and have clean driving records. The
cost is $28/hour for this individual transportation.
So, if you need a ride there are many options: the START bus, Senior Center bus, taxis, friends and now individual transportation by
senior center home care staff. Give us a call and we will help find the
best option for you.
If you, or a family member would like to discuss our services please call the
Senior Center, 733-7300
Feet have been called the mirror of health, they support us and
help us move through life, so foot health is vital to walk tall during
our Golden Years.
According to The Senior Network News, ailing feet can signal
health issues such as diabetes, arthritis and poor circulationconditions that plague many seniors. Symptoms such as dry skin
and brittle nails, numbness, tingling, discoloration, loss of leg hair
and cramping may be red flags and merit a visit to a doctor.
At The Senior Center of Jackson Hole Podiatrist Dr. Scott Bevan
holds foot clinics with individual appointments every other month
and can bill your Medicare or other insurance. To make an appointment with Dr. Bevan, you can sign up in the Special Events
Sign-Up Binder or contact Senior Center staff. Another option is the Foot Clinic at the Senior Center every
other month (the months that Dr. Bevan is not here). Registered nurses can soak your feet, trim nails and
apply lotion for a suggested contribution of $10. They give foot care on a first come, first served basis.
Seniors should not wait until their feet hurt to address problems. Good foot care includes inspecting your feet
daily for athlete’s foot, blisters, hammertoes, ingrown toenails, heel pain, unusual swelling, odor, changes in
color or temperature, and wounds. Diabetics should pay special attention to their feet, as small cuts could
ulcerate, and poor blood flow can lead to gangrene.
Fortunately, proper foot care and footwear can help Seniors live active, satisfying lives. Wearing “sensible
shoes”, tops the list for healthy feet. Your feet should be comfortable in soft yet supportive shoes, laces or
Velcro can be easily loosened when needed, and alternate shoes regularly. In addition, wearing shoes indoors can help prevent falls and infections.
More tips for optimum foot health that may be useful to Seniors include:







Soak feet in warm water for 10 minutes daily and blot dry.
Moisturize with unscented cream (but not between toes)
Walk or exercise, with a doctor’s approval, for increased circulation.
Soak brittle nails before weekly clipping and filing.
Keep feet warm and dry by wearing clean socks.
Rest feet and don’t cross your legs for extended periods.
Have an annual foot exam.
Healthy feet make for healthy bodies and should not be taken for
granted. Staying one step ahead with attentive foot care, regardless
of age, will help insure mobility, and help you keep
dancing through life.
Mahjong
Thursdays at 1:00
Mahjong is very similar to Rummy and is played
with tiles. The main objective is to build sets with the
tiles through drawing and discarding them. In different variants it has different tiles but it is always
played by four players.
