First Generation
1. Petrus VON KNAUTH was born 1509. He died 15 May 1595 in Naumburg, Germany.
Occupation : Erbgesessener zu Siebenlehn und Breitenbach (Owner of the inherited
farmland of Siebenlehn and Breitenbach).
The "von" in the name of Petrus von Knauth and Barbara von Triller shows that they
were ennobled. Apparently it was not heritable and they were not of noble blood
and the "von" vanished in the next generation.
From Stephen Pfeiffer email : ... according to my mother (Sybilla KnauthPfeiffer), Petrus von Knauth donated a silver chalice to the church in Siebenlehn
near Leipzig back in the 1500's. (We live in Germany, though we are Americans.)

Peter (von) Knauth (* 1528? † 15.11.1595 in Naumburg) of respected civic
generation. He was the owner of two goods to Siebenlehn and Breitenbach, where his
family probably originates and is detected there since 1509. His family is
believed to originate from Thuringia, Sangerhausen.
The complete strain range of the former respected private banking house of Knauth,
Nachod & Kühne in Leipzig (founded in 1871/72 by Franz Theodor Knauth, consul in
Leipzig * 1803 † 1874
Father: Carl Gottlob Knauth * 1773 † 1813,
Grandfather, Abraham Knauth * 1739 † 02.16.1800 in Naumburg)
Begins with Peter Knauth as the progenitor. The bank was closed in 1945 by SMAD
order and liquidated by the Saxon State Bank.

Petrus married Barbara VON TRILLER in 1535. Barbara was born 1516. She died 1601.
'von' in the Triller name : Behind the von Triller seems to be a historical event.
In 1455 the two sons of the elector of Saxony, the young princes Ernst and
Albrecht, were kidnapped. With the help of a charcoal burner named Georg Schmidt
they were freed. The charcoal burner received from the elector as a reward and
present a land estate near Zwickau and the name Triller. I presume that on this
occasion he was ennobled.

Franz Theodor Knauth was born in Gohlis, a village outside the city walls of
Leipzig, but not part of the much larger city of today and later went by the
shortened name of Theodor Knauth.
Occupation : Kaufmann in Leipzig (Merchant in Leipzig). Franz was a banker and cofounder of Knauth, Nachod & Keuhne, a German-American banking house.
Knauth Nachod & Keuhne, New York & Leipzig, founded in 1852, prospered through
generations of Knauths until 1923, when the house in New York was closed and 1946,
when the bank in Leipzig was closed by the post WWII Russian occupation. The bank
was in business for a total of 107 years.
From Stephen Pfeiffer email : My mother (Sybilla Knauth-Pfeiffer), remembers that
Franz Theodor Knauth, an orphan, crossed the battlefield of the Vielvölkerschlacht
at Leipzig (perhaps - fled from Leipzig), when Napoleon was stopped the first
time, and made his way to Naumburg, where Cristiane Sophie Knauth, his aunt, took
him on. He was apparently 12 at the time.

History: Originating from a cloth and Commission wholesaler to and ex import
business transacted their extensively with the United States, was established in
1852, the company Knauth, Nachod & Kühne built, which in 1862 entered into the
commercial register. For the company belonged Theodor Knauth, consul in Leipzig,
Jacob Nachod, merchant in Leipzig and Friedrich Kühne, merchant in New York. The
focus of the business shifted in the following years more and more from trading on
the banking business. 1871/72 then the trading business was separated from the
banking business. In the following decades, the Bank has developed into a
prestigious private bank in Leipzig. The bank was closed in 1945 by SMAD order and
liquidated by the Saxon State Bank.

Franz Theodor Knauth
Franz Theodor Knauth (* April 25 1803 in Leipzig , † August 1874 ) was a German
businessman and banker.
Knauth came from a Saxon merchant family. His father came from Naumburg / Saale
Leipzig.
Knauth was a young businessman for Leipzig silks act Dufour worked in France and
Mexico. In 1839 he took over together with Samuel Storrow of Boston by Dufour
their goods purchase- commission business . After Storrows death in 1842 Knauth
made first with his brother-ash as partners. 1852 appeared in its place Nachod
Jacob , who had proven themselves in Knauths old company, and Friedrich Kühne.
The Bank House Knauth, Nachod & Kühne was established as a new company with
offices in Leipzig and New York. Knauth had recognized that the growing trade
between the U.S. and Europe good business prospects offered. The business focus
shifted from goods imported to transatlantic banking services. In Saxony Knauth

was before 1867 Consul for Colombia, among others.
With his 1848 prematurely deceased first wife Adelheid nee Ash he had three
children. His second wife was married to Elizabeth Knauth Fanny Steyer from
Leipzig (1828-1907) and had with her ??other five children. After the death of his
sons were Knauths Percival Knauth and Antonio Knauth in the bank. His children
moved their center of life from Leipzig in the U.S. and were leading members of
the German-American society in New York. A granddaughter Knauths was the
philosopher Susanne K. Langer.
Franz married (1) Adelheid ESCHE on 25 Apr 1842. Adelheid was born 1819. She died 4 Jan 1848 and was buried in
Old Saint John's Cemetery, Leipzig, Germany.

Searching the internet for an information about the Knauth familiy Leipzig, I came
across your website, where I have found, what I was looking for; thank you.
Maybe you are interested in the attached file, which shows the decendants of
Camilla Knauth b. 1845. She was married (presumably in 1867)to Gustav Fels (b.
1842), a lawyer (finally at the Reichsgericht in Leipzig). Both went in 1910 to
Namibia (at the time: Deutsch
Sued-West-Afrika) to live there with her daughter Gerda Fels (1882 - 1976) who was
married (1902) to the farmer Erich Rust (1872 - 1963); they died their after 1914,
probably after 1919. The descendants after their daughter Gerda are the Rust
family on/from the farm Ondekaremba. The elder daughters of Camilla Knauth and
Gustav Fels stayed unmarried, their youngest daughter Waltraud Fels (1884 - 1962)
married in 1904 Wilhem Anz (1871 - 1943) who at the time was (1900 - 1907) pastor
of the lutheran parish in Windhoek. They had no children.

- there is, in fact, no relationship between "my families" and any of "your
families" (as far as I know ...). And there is no relationship to the Fels and
Rust families either. One of my great grandfathers was a younger brother of the
pastor in Windhoek Wilhelm Anz (1871 - 1943) who was married to Waltraud Fels, the
youngest daughter of Camilla Knauth b. 1845. Their eldest brother Heinrich Anz
(1870 - 1944; headmaster of the Gymnasium Ernestinum Gotha) is the author of the
original notes (Gotha 1938/39) from which I sent the excerpt file. I have only
recently had the opportunity to copy the notes of Heinrich Anz and was just
interessed in locating the Knauth familiy as a possible explanation for the
marriage.
Obviously all descendants of Camilla Knauth following the generation of her own
children are the descendants of her daughter Gerda Fels, i. e. the Rust familiy
on/from the farm Ondekaremba/Namibia.

Knauth material. Was interesting to me that Franz Theodor Knauth's daughter Selma
was married to a Bowditch. If I remember correctly without digging into my files,
his grandfather or g-grandfather was Nathaniel Bowditch, who wrote a famous guide
for navigating, still appreciated. But Henry Pickering Bowditch was no slouch,
either, for the innovative work he did in medicine, and heading up the medical
department at Harvard for some time.

Waldeck, Percival Knauth's vacation home in Bolton Landing on Lake George, NY
Unfortunately, there are no pictures of 'Waldeck' and few references to it in
Knauth reference documents, with the exception of the following excerpts extracted
from Percival Knauth Memoir, by Theodore W. Knauth, 1951.
With his family established in its city home, Percival's next problem was the
summer. Shandaken in the Catskills was given a trial, and then Connecticut, but
Bolton Landing on Lake George was the place that best fitted all the requirements.
A summer was spent in Villa Mathilde, hard by the old Mohican House. That fall a
piece of land was bought, where the road and the lake came together by Artist
Brook, with a high sand-bank on which to build a house, and what had been a field
around it, in which a second-growth of little pine-trees stood waist-high. Here,
in 1892, "Waldeck" was built by Philip Sawyer, of the later famous firm of York &
Sawyer. Antonio built its neighbor, "Felseck" a few years afterwards, and further
forest land, the "Hinterland" was added, to form a vacation place that was ideal
both for children and for grown-ups. Percival loved his wild woods the more
because of his own childhood in civilized Europe, the swimming, and the rowing on
the lake, and he also took up his riding again on the back roads among the hills.
More even than 302 (the primary home that Percival also built - 302 76th St, NYC illustration under 'K - Knauth, Percival'), "Waldeck" became the family home,
planned commodiously from the start for a big family and visitors in plenty. The
family migrations in the early summer, and the return in the fall, undertaken
jointly with other families, enough to fill a Wagner Palace Car on the Delaware &
Hudson, with space on the Albany Night Boat, were an event. With the family away,
Percival lived comfortably enough in the deserted city house, and took his holiday
in August, the high spot of which was the fireworks display on Mother's Birthday,
August 12th. What a day that always was !
Percival died at his summer home, Waldeck, at Bolton Landing on Lake George, on
July 17, 1900.

Alice was born in 1923 in Kingston, New York; died 1996 in
Lomontville, New York. The family lived in Hurley, 2 ½ miles outside

of Kingston, in a rural area. Her father was a teacher of physics and
chemistry at Kingston High School, and also ran a one person farm,
where they could raise much of their food, have chickens and a cow,
and Alice and her sister Violet had horses. Other siblings were Eva,
Susanne, Edward, and James. Ilse Knauth Dunbar, their mother, managed
the household, but was also a very artistic person and had a
professionally trained soprano voice. It was an atmosphere where we
were all encouraged to learn to do creative things, making things and
playing music.
Alice was named for a paternal great aunt, Alice Walton, who was a
classics professor at Wellesley College in the late 1800s.
Interestingly, neither Alice ever married.
Alice had a studio at the family home in Hurley, until 1947 when the
parents moved to another place in Lomontville, New York.. There they
built a two car garage and attached space which became a studio for
Alice when she was there. She was awarded a traveling scholarship,
and went to France for a year to study in 1947-48.
Alice was artistically creative at an early age. Although I was 9
years younger, I can remember her participating in art classes while
in high school. She then went to the Boston Museum School of Fine
Arts, and studied there 1940-1945 with Frederick Allen; bluestone
carving with Tomas Penning in Woodstock, NY; bronze casting with
Angelica Bodky Lee in Boston, and later in 1969, on sabbatical leave,
with Walter Weber in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; resin casting with
Elizabeth Mac-Lean Smith in Boston, MA.
Teaching:
Alice taught for two years at Spelman College, the African American
women’s branch of Atlanta University. She was there from September of
1945 to May of 1947. She then went on her European trip in 1947,
returning to teach the second semester, January to May, of 1948. (

From 1948 through 1956, Alice worked in her studio at the family home
in Lomontville, NY. She had some students occasionally, and was
already a member of the Woodstock Art Association, showing there and
at the Ulster County Community College nearby, but I don’t have dates
or records from that period.
She taught 35 years at Pomfret School, Pomfret, Connecticut from 1956
until 1991. In the Pomfret Winter/Spring 2003 Bulletin her student
Peter Borgemeister’69 wrote a tribute to Alice Dunbar, in which he
mentions she started teaching there with a single classroom on the
third floor of the school building. When she left, Pomfret had a
complete sculpture, ceramics, and metal-casting facility, which is a
rarity at a secondary level school.
Ben Morgan, a colleague at Pomfret, who taught science and shop there,
became a valuable support for the technical projects which Alice would
initiate at the school, such as the bronze and aluminum casting. An
incidental note of interest for them is that they both enjoyed playing
chamber music together, Alice on flute, and Ben on keyboard.
Alice’s sister and brother-in-law, Eva and Ralph C. Bailey, MD, were
in Afghanistan on a two year US government program, and in the summer
of 1958 Alice visited them. An early student, William Hayes, recalls
on that trip she gathered some good ideas for sculptures, and one
notable result was several versions of Afghan dancers, cast in bronze.

commissioned. In 1961 Alice went around the world with her maternal
aunt, Dr. Susanne K. Langer, who is known for her work in the field of
philosophy of art. On this trip she amassed an extensive collection
of sketches and notes which contributed to her art work later. In
1963 she traveled to Africa with Pomfret School International Seminar
with 10 students, where she gathered more ideas for art work.

a follower of Ernst Cassirer. She is best known for her 1942 book Philosophy in a

She studied at Radcliffe College, Cambridge, MA, and received a Doctorate in
Philosophy in 1926. She taught at Radcliffe, Wellesley College, Smith College, and
Columbia University.

'Up the Mountain Road' book about Brother Louis - b. October 4, 1892 is probably
incorrect.
Louis' family resided on a mountain called 'The Eagles Nest' in the Catskill
mountains, near Hurley, NY. In his mid life, Louis lost interest as a lawyer and
dedicated his life to Christianity and Evangelism. He wrote an unpublished
autobiography which included details of his grand father's migration from Prussia
to the US. He also wrote of his childhood years, college years, army years, his
conversion to a devoted to Christian and later experiences. Hope Stanton Lee and
her husband Harold met Louis in his later years and became very dear friends and
fellow Christians. Hope was inspired to write a photo illustrated biography of
'Brother Louis' detailing his later years when she knew him and his ventures as an
evangelist. Her book was called 'Up the Mountain Road'. Her husband had a few
bound copies published. Unfortunately the book was not archived with a major
publishing company, so it is not possible to have more of them published.

Louis Huthsteiner, a Lieutenant in the Officers' Reserve Corps, was celebrated at
4:30 o'clock this afternoon in the Church of St. Sacrament, Bolton Landing. The
bride was attended by Miss Helen Huthsteiner, sister of the bridegroom, who acted
as maid of honor, and the Misses Susanne Knauth, Helen Sewall, Ruth McAneny,
Charlotte Melcher, and Gertrude Melcher were the bridesmaids. Mr. Huthsteiner had
as best man, Victor Knauth, Sergeant of Battery A, First Massachusetts Field
Artillery.

There are some letters to Ilse Knauth Dunbar, Else’s daughter, married to Henry F.
Dunbar. They are from 1939 and later, mostly from Hildegard Holzer, who was the
daughter of Octavio Knauth and Clara Monhardt/Knauth, Antonio’s youngest brother.
He stayed in Germany, and also died 1900. Hildegard would therefor have been a
first cousin of Ilse. On the family tree it is indicated that her first husband’s
name was Drusii Eremie Poppa. In the text there is a suggestion that he was
Rumanian, and they lived in Rumania. They had Ileana, who married Dinu Aliman,
(apparently shortened from Alimanestianu) and Octavio. She refers to these two in
her letters on occasion. It seems that Ileana and Dinu came to the US, and have
children. Her husband at the time of the letters is Ernie Holzer. No specific
information as to his profession.

Palm Beach, FA (early 1970's). Carl bought and operated a Meat Products Store for
a number of years and lived there with his wife, Leah, until he died (1999). After
his death, Leah moved back to Albion, NY. to be closer to children and friends.
Carl had an interest in family genealogy and conducted extensive research
manually, without computers. After his death, Leah moved back to Albion, NY. to be
closer to children and friends. Carl's extensive genealogy research was later
passed on to his son, Ted, who eventually correlated all of his research
documentation and created this web site to share with family in his memory.

Christopher Rutgers Knauth KINGSTON- Christopher Rutgers Knauth, 83, of Kingston,
died Wednesday, Oc. 23, 2013, at home with his family. Born Dec. 15, 1929, in New
York, N.Y., he was the only son of Arnold and Wilhelmina de Peyster Knauth.
He is survived by his wife Maria Thereza Knauth, and by thirteen children,
Geoffrey Knauth, Susan Ellis, Daniel Knauth, David Knauth, Deanna Yildiz, DorieAnn White, Dalinda Bohr, Deahnara Regan, Dorcinda Knauth, Dietrich Knauth, Deidra
Knauth, Desmond Knauth, and Devon Knauth. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Dorinda.
Christopher attended Milton Academy, and he always remembered their motto, "Dare
to be True." He graduated from Harvard Law School and Harvard University, where he
played trumpet in the Harvard band. He served in the U.S. Army, and was stationed
in Germany after the end of World War II. He worked for 30 years as an attorney
for the New York State Division of Human Rights until his retirement in 2012. He
was a Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers fan and an avid lover of poetry. He was a
member of the Harvard Club, the Metropolitan Republican Club, the Adirondack
Mountain Club, and Trinity Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed the men's breakfasts
on Wednesday mornings. He enjoyed singing in the Woodstock Reformed Church choir.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to the Adirondack Mountain Club, at
www.adk.org. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the
