Der B a l l a d e n d i c h t e r , s o H a c k s , b e t r e i b t
e i n e " K u n s t s o r t e , d i e das l y r i s c h e , d r a m a t i s c h e ,
e p i s c h e , t ä n z e r i s c h e und m u s i k a l i s c h e Geschäft
a u f e i n e n H i e b " (S. 56) v e p ö u c h t , und um
das
akrobatische
Stückchen auf d i e S p i t z e zu
t r e i b e n , fügt Hacks f l u g s e i n s e c h s t e s E l e m e n t ,
das d e r G e s c h i c h t l i c h k e i t ( " G e s c h i c h t e w ä r e
d i e j e n i g e G e s c h i c h t e , d i e i n W i r k l i c h k e i t war.
(...) D i e B a l l a d e w ü r d e z u r H i s t o r i e . " , S. 111),
hinzu.
D a m i t n i c h t genug, s e i n e 15 s a l o p p e n
B a l l a d e n benötigen d r e i S e i t e n Erklärungen, m i t
denen er s e i n e n eigenen guten Rat l e i d e r i n den
Wind schlägt:
"gut b e r a t e n i s t der D i c h t e r m i t
S t o f f e n , d i e s c h o n b e r ü h m t s i n d (...) e r s o l l
n u r n i c h t F u ß n o t e n m i t d i c h t e n müssen." Welche
L e s e r w i s s e n denn h e u t e n o c h , wer
Johannes
T e t z e l , was des P a p s t e s F o r m o s i V e r b r e c h e n war
oder gewesen s e i n s o l l , oder w e l c h e r S c i p i o wann
und warum der " A f r i k a n e r " genannt wurde?
"Lola
und L u d w i g " , B i s m a r k o d e r M o z a r t s i n d uns da
schon näher.
Hacks' zum T e i l unglückliche Auswahl der S t o f f e beeinträchtigt das Lesevergnügen
e r h e b l i c h , wenn a u c h s e i n e P o i n t e n o f t ü b e r r a s c h e n d und m e i s t e r l i c h w i e d i e H e i n e s o d e r
l e h r r e i c h wie die B r e c h t s s i n d .
In
der
T r a d i t i o n des l e t z t e r e n fühlt man auch s t e t s den
b o h r e n d b e l e h r e n d e n Z e i g e f i n g e r unangenehm im
Rücken.
Wesentlich unterhaltsamer in seiner
p a r o d i e r t e n W i s s e n s c h a f t l i c h k e i t i s t Hacks'
" V e r s u c h über d i e B a l l a d e " , den e r " U r p o e s i e ,
oder: Das s c h e i n t o t e K i n d " nennt. Er begrübelt
E n t s t e h u n g und Werdegang der G a t t u n g B a l l a d e a u f
f r i s c h v e r g n ü g l i c h e W e i s e , um am Ende d o c h
w i e d e r m i t l e i c h t e m D r o h f i n g e r zu
fragen:

" G a t t u n g e n s i n d e r f u n d e n w o r d e n , um b e s t i m m t e
B e d ü r f n i s s e zu b e f r i e d i g e n .
D a r f denn d i e
m e n s c h l i c h e Rasse f o r t l e b e n und i h r e Bedürfnisse
sterben lassen?"

P e t e r H a c k s ' A b s i c h t war e s , m i t s e i n e r
"Abhandlung e i n e r K l i n g e l s c h n u r v e r g l e i c h b a r ,
d i e aus dem G r a b d e r B a l l a d e i n d i e W e l t d e r
L e b e n d e n " (S. 114) führe, e i n e G a t t u n g neu zu
b e l e b e n und g l e i c h z e i t i g z u u n t e r r i c h t e n und
unterhalten.
Das h a t e r m i t s e i n e m a m ü s a n t e n
"Versuch" blendend bewältigt. Zu h o f f e n b l i e b e ,
daß junge B a l l a d e n d i c h t e r d i e muntere T h e o r i e i n
f r e c h e P r a x i s umsetzen.

I n West B e r l i n , t h i s book's p u b l i c a t i o n was
announced on the i n v i t a t i o n t o the opening o f an
e x h i b i t o f Hauswald's photos i n G a l e r i e Pommersfeld.
Rathenau and Hauswald were t o be p r e s e n t .
A t 11 AM on o p e n i n g Sunday, TV and r a d i o were
t a p i n g , and the g a l l e r y was packed w i t h so many
o f West B e r l i n ' s l i t e r a r y p u b l i c t h a t no one
c o u l d move, l e t a l o n e l o o k a t t h e p i c t u r e s .
E a s t B e r l i n e m i g r e s and Western "GDR-buffs" were
t h e r e i n f o r c e , many — l i k e m y s e l f — h o p i n g t o
s e e and t a l k w i t h a f r i e n d t h e y a r e no l o n g e r
a l l o w e d to v i s i t .
But R a t h e n a u and H a u s w a l d
hadn't been g r a n t e d e x i t v i s a s .
When the crowd t h i n n e d out an hour l a t e r , i t
was p o s s i b l e t o l o o k a t t h e p h o t o s , a s a m p l i n g
f r o m t h e c o l l e c t i o n c o n t a i n e d i n t h e book:
a r c h i t e c t u r a l c o n t r a s t s , s t r e e t scenes,
and
p e o p l e — l o v e r s on subway s t a i r s , an o l d g r a n d mother amusedly b l o w i n g up a b a l l o o n a t a s t r e e t
p a r t y , punks m o d e l l i n g punk o u t f i t s , a garbageman a t w o r k , E r i c h H o n e c k e r g e s t u r i n g
while
g i v i n g a speech, an A m e r i c a n s o l d i e r i n f r o n t o f
