LETTER TO THE VICE CHANCELLOR, OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILE IFE, NIGERIA - ACADEMIC RESEARCH FRAUD AND MALPRACTICE (Raw and Unedited) By Professor Adefioye Sunday Adewumi
8 Olasode Street,
Ilesa Road, Ile Ife,
Osun State, Nigeria.
29/08/2016.
To:
The Vice Chancellor
Office of the Vice Chancellor
Through:
The Dean, Personnel Affairs
For Attn:
The Dean, Academics
Obafemi Awolowo University,
Ile Ife, Osun State,
Nigeria.
Dear Sir,
A CALL FOR THE SUSPENSION OF MR. NATHANIEL OLUGBADE
ADEOYE FOR LIBEL AND GROSS SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
MISCONDUCT
I write to relay my disappointment in the quality of academic staff of the Obafemi
Awolowo University which is exemplified by the unethical scientific research,
professional and academic attitudes of some academic staff members of the
institution.
A typical example is the case of Mr. Nathaniel O. Adeoye, presently the Head of
Department, Department of Geography, Faculty of Social Sciences, Obafemi
Awolowo University. Adeoye in the most important scientific publication of his
academic career for the university titled “Geospatial Analysis of Wetland Cultivated
Areas in Ile Ife, Osun State, Nigeria” utilizes duplicated datasets, filled with
plagiarism while libelling original intellectual owner of the data/research work (he
was only the academic supervisor – what he was paid to do during the research work).
The principal dataset used for the published paper – locational and attribute data of
wetland areas in Ile Ife and processed road map of Ile Ife showing location of the
wetlands used for cultivation in the city was extracted (unedited) from my
undergraduate BSc thesis. The location of all the wetlands were collected in late 2009
within a week covering all areas in Ile Ife and some part of Modakeke where wetlands
exists or are used for cultivation – a total of 62 wetlands were recorded while 37 were
analysed as those actually used for cultivation in the city. And finally, he unethically
libelled the original intellectual property owner as being a field help used for data
collection publicly published in an internationally indexed open access journal
(Journal of Earth Science and Engineering 2 (2012) 97-104) since February 20, 2012.
The original research work was published as “Geospatial Analysis of Wetland Areas
in Ile-Ife, Nigeria: Imperative for Sustainable Urbanization” in the Nigeria
Geographical Journal, Volume 8(1) June 2012 by the Association of Nigerian
Geographers with ISSN 1358-4319. The corresponding co-author Dr. Fanan Ujoh
(PhD) may be contacted if the need be via [email protected]. The co-author did
the editing, complete revision and also paid for the publication.
To serve as an example for others and lay a solid foundation for improvement in the
quality and impact of academic research activities of the institution thereby propelling
the school to forefront in academic excellence not limited only to Nigeria, I call for
the suspension of unethical non-entities like Nathaniel Adeoye while necessary
actions are taken to retract the publication, contact other researchers who have cited
the publication (about two public citations) and adequate compensation for publicly
libelling the data (research) owner spanning over a period of 54 months (4 years 6
months).
This same letter or similar have been forwarded to other recognized academic body in
Nigeria and I am willing to pursue legal and other necessary actions against the
University (since the publication was made for the institution) if no action is taken at
this level.
Evidences for originally conducting the research – data collection, management and
analysis methods used for the research project’s execution, unprocessed/raw field
data, and research output is available on request.
Thank you for your time and understanding.
Yours Faithfully,
