WHAT
MAKES
A GOOD
BATHROOM?
Philippe Grohe,
head of the Axor brand
and grandson of the
company founder,
in an interview.
When it comes to technical innovation, Hansgrohe is a
company with long-standing tradition. When did the area
of design become part of this? Was it a logical consequence?
The Axor brand was established in 1993 but even before that time, Hansgrohe had already produced technically impressive products. Showers
and faucets. Of course, these also looked good. In other words, design has
always been a key focus at Hansgrohe. By exchanging ideas with other
designers, we wanted to complement our ideas on the bathroom of the future with visions, lifestyles and trends that go beyond the product. That
gives life and emotions to the room. This is something that we cannot do
alone. And it is something that cannot be achieved by just one designer. Therefore, we work with several creative designers.
You have already commissioned the services of many
prestigious designers. Do you appoint a new designer
for each collection?
We now partner with multiple international designers and architects with whom we hold regular open discussions. Some have already developed two or three collections with us.
How much freedom do you give to the designers?
We put our full trust in our designers’ visions and powers of innovation. When we first collaborated with one of the most famous designers of our time, we truly experienced the big bang. The first complete bathroom with faucets, showers, sinks and bathtub was created from a single designer. Philippe Starck’s bathroom. It was a revolution.
Since then, has it been about more than just faucets?
That’s right. It’s about the entire room, an atmosphere and above all, a new way of looking at life and how we use water in the bathroom. This is why it’s advantageous if our designers are also interior designers or architects. In addition to the faucets and showers, we also work with them to develop sinks, bathtubs, accessories and, of course, comprehensive bathroom solutions.
You look for designers with different, sometimes even
highly conflicting, styles and attitudes. What do you
regard as fruitful collaboration with creative minds?
For the Axor brand, the designer’s vision is at the forefront. Designers should develop their own personal bathroom. We do not regard them as suppliers, but as creative partners with whom we can exchange ideas as
equals. During this process, each of the partners offers their own expertise.
From our perspective, this is our water and industrial bathroom expertise as well as a certain design culture.
To what extent have the requirements for bathrooms
changed over the last few years and decades?
The bathroom is changing from a place of hygiene to a place for living. This is partly attributable to our lifestyle habits. In the past, we had extremely close ties to nature. Now, our lives are dominated by an urban world and hectic everyday situations. We therefore have a growing need for a sense of tranquility and a natural experience. More and more people are discovering the bathroom as a place for relaxation and wellbeing. And it is not without a little pride that we believe we have made an important contribution to this. Antonio Citterio once said that we only have to stand under the shower for 30 seconds to get clean. So why do we shower for three or five minutes? Because it changes how we feel afterwards. However, wellbeing also means using a great deal of water, which naturally poses a major technical challenge for us. After all, one thing is clear: We have to conserve the precious commodity of water. And so, we are certainly not going to get bored.

MAKING
OF
HOW A
COLLECTION
IS CREATED.
Using Axor
Massaud as an example.
 Jean-Marie Massaud
The French designer is among the leading representatives of nature-inspired design. He often finds inspiration for his designs and architecture in nature. There is no disputing that the “Truffle” lounge chair resembles a natural truffle. His latest masterpiece, the Mexican “Chivas” soccer stadium, harmoniously blends into the volcanic landscape.
 As far back as 2005, Jean-Marie Massaud realized his ideal vision of a bathroom within the scope of the Axor WaterDream project. For him, this is a symbiosis of the
natural elements of fire, water, earth and air.
8
9
AXOR WATERDREAM — MASSAUD’S BATHROOM DREAM.
All new Axor collections start with a personal vision. For Jean-Marie Massaud, the bathroom is a living space in which technology disappears
and the focus instead falls on emotional experiences and the associated comfort and convenience. In describing his WaterDream project, initiated with the Axor brand in 2005, he commented, “I visualize a lake in the heart of the countryside. I want to feel like I’m sitting by a campfire, listening to music and sipping champagne, and simply clear my mind.” A feeling of complete relaxation.
Jean-Marie Massaud starts by considering the room in which his occupant
resides. He defines wellbeing as a holistic concept and lets the individual,
water and space melt into one.
FROM WATER
DREAM TO
A DREAM
BATHROOM.
During the design process,
the vision of the dream
bathroom develops into a
harmonious work that combines
architecture, materials, lighting
and bathroom products.
All creative partners that work
with the Axor brand think
beyond the actual product and
its pure functionality for personal
hygiene purposes. Different concepts for the room and its
use is developed through discussions between the designers and architects.
 The bathroom
layout: From quiet
zones to the use of natural materials
to small, personal details such as
candles, lamps
and picture frames.
10
11
Does a dream bathroom have to be large? “Not at all,” insists Philippe
Grohe in contradiction to the prevailing opinion that designer bathrooms
cannot be created without a sizable room. “It is not the size of the bathroom that determines the quality, but the basic elements that convey the idea of the room concept.” The designers’ main ideas for room concepts
can also be realized in small rooms and thus ideas about room concepts
complement people’s highly individual needs. The designers’ basic room
concept ideas can be realized in bathrooms of all sizes — from the standard
to the luxurious.
NATURE-INSPIRED DESIGN —
FROM FAUCETS TO TOWEL RACKS.
 Jean-Marie Massaud creates harmony between
organic lines and geometric shapes.
12
13
 Nature-inspired design: Axor Massaud
quotes organic shapes from nature. A waterfall from the sink, a branching tree, stones.
In Jean-Marie Massaud’s idea of the perfect bathroom, the resident brings the experience of nature into the home. In this regard, he first designed the room and then, in a second stage, the products whose character supports the idea of the nature-inspired room. The complete bathroom collection has therefore been designed in an organic style: Pebbles, branches, logs and grass inspire an extraordinary collection. The body of the most striking product, the single-hole faucet, resembles a blade of grass. With an integrated shelf, the faucet becomes a functional
sculpture. In addition to the faucet, sink and bathtub, nature has also provided
the inspiration for the accessories. Axor has thus developed a candle holder,
soap dish, flower vase, tumbler and towel rack using ideas from the French
designer’s sketches and desires. The towel rack cites Massaud’s philosophy
as a branching tree, the vase celebrates the ritual use of water and the vase
and the candle holder resemble pebbles that would caress the hand.
“CLEAR, PURE AND BEAUTIFUL LIKE
A NATURAL WATERFALL.”
In his Axor WaterDream project, Massaud demonstrated his philosophy that
a faucet’s technical aspects should be hidden in the background. He wants
to move beyond purely functional plumbing fixtures and provide additional benefits. So what does a faucet look like if it is more than just a tap?
“What Massaud presented to us,” comments Philippe Grohe, “was absolutely
futuristic, and a little crazy.” But most of all, it was simply brilliant. Designers
working on the Axor brand therefore did everything it could to turn his idea into a reality. “To make the water flow quietly and smoothly out of the faucet’s spout we had to completely redesign the interior workings of a faucet,” Horst Flieger, Head of the Hansgrohe Research and Development
department, remembers. “Creating the optimum spray pattern was extremely
difficult.” To create this elegant water jet, the experts at the Hansgrohe ShowerLab had to incorporate highly sophisticated technology into an extremely flat plate. The successful result: A faucet from which a beautiful
waterfall flows; a particularly pleasant experience that uses little water.
1The water runs evenly along
parallel tracks.
2 Small bridge pillars slow the flow
rate of the water jet.
3 Stabilization rims on the outer right
and left prevent the eddying of the
gentle flow.
4 A silicone lip makes it easier to
thoroughly clean the faucet.
The sink’s geometry has been precisely
tailored to the water jet.

 The designer Jean-Marie Massaud and the Axor development team were involved in extensive discussions. They regularly met for coordination meetings. After a
development period of more than three years, Axor Massaud was finally introduced to the market.
Axor Massaud.
From the Black
Forest to the
whole world.
Design is not the only thing that shimmers. Every faucet and shower is deeply rooted in the history of Hansgrohe and a commitment to ensuring
the best quality through German engineering and manufacturing.
Located in the same city where the company was founded, the Axor plant
in Schiltach is one of five world-class Hansgrohe production plants in Germany. Here, cutting-edge German engineering meets years of tradition
to create the more than 5,000 different products of the Axor collections,
each of which exudes superb workmanship, design and technology.
A brief glance at the production processes quickly shows onlookers that the plant does not manufacture mass-produced products. In the two-floor facility, employees work on the designer products in several shifts. It takes a great deal of craftsmanship to turn the designers’ visions into reality.
Their high requirements give rise to many different production stages, such as precise casting and cutting or subjecting the geometric surfaces to even
more intensive processes to ensure that they are optimally chrome-plated.
The cast piece is refined like a raw diamond in many individual stages until
the final product is achieved. Even the base of the Axor Massaud faucet is hand-polished until it acquires a brilliant shine.
 Axor Massaud
The manufacture of each product is a
labor-intensive process. Each undergoes
numerous individual stages and quality
controls before it finds a place in an
Axor Massaud bathroom.
 The start of an Axor Massaud
faucet: Currently still a raw and
inconspicuous brass bar, the raw
material melts in the furnace at
over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The liquid metal now takes on a recognizable form.
 The faucet enters the polishing
stage: The rough casting is polished
by hand. To ensure that the surface
has an impressive shine, all flat surfaces
and edges are polished manually.
 The brass faucet is placed in an
electrolytic immersion bath. In one
of the most modern plating systems,
the faucet now receives a brilliantly
shiny chrome layer that ensures longlasting durability. It bathes in several
electrolytic baths for up to an hour.
 A single Axor Massaud faucet comprises almost 30 individual components. In the
final assembly, the specialized Axor Massaud workers assemble all parts together
to create the finished product: The hoses and the cartridge — known as the faucet’s
“engine” — disappear into the body, the special waterfall aerator is screwed into the metal plate and the handle is adjusted. No product leaves the factory without first being tested for leaks and optimum spray performance.

“Water is an elixir of life.
It therefore deserves our full
respect and consideration.”
Klaus Grohe
Jean-Marie Massaud’s philosophy of “nature-inspired design” is based on the
idea of harmony between man, water and space. However, the interaction of
design, technology and the careful use of our resources shapes every Axor project. In this regard, we value the precious commodities of water and energy. It is no wonder that this is also why the designers chose to work with Axor. It is most likely our location in the Black Forest that teaches Hansgrohe to respect nature, on which we have always been reliant. Hansgrohe has always regarded itself as a pioneer of environmental protection — long before
“sustainability” became a corporate buzz word.
The company was one of the first in the industry to promote resource-conserving technologies. Sustainability is a central topic that covers multiple aspects, including ecological, economical and social responsibility. A bathroom in which people
should enjoy a sense of wellbeing for more than 20 years has high demands in
terms of sustainability: a design that will outlive all fashion trends, durable materials
and excellent innovative strength in matters of quality and technology.
 In the heart of the Black Forest,
the primordial element of water is
all around.
 Klaus Grohe, son of the company
founder and Chair of the Supervisory
Board, was the first in the industry to
dedicate himself to the development of
low-consumption water usage systems.

For many years, Axor collections have been incorporated into outstanding architectural projects
all over the world. Truly impressive architecture
for everyone’s enjoyment. The types of projects
could not be more different, yet they all have
several things in common: A high demand for quality, innovative design and a respectful use of water. The Axor brand is therefore equally at home in outstanding office buildings, luxurious
yachts, exclusive residential projects and many other international projects. Residential building owners find specialized solutions for creating their own individual bathroom experiences, while the exclusivity of the design and the intelligent
use of water are often decisive factors for public building owners and architects.

Barcelona, Spain
· Architect: Carlos Ferrater, Barcelona, Spain
· Interior Designer: Patricia Urquiola, Milan, Italy
· Collection: Axor Urquiola
· Rooms: 98
The Mandarin Oriental hotel is located on the elegant
Passeig de Gràcia shopping street, just a stone’s throw
away from Gaudí’s famous Casa Batlló. Born in Spain, the award-winning designer Patricia Urquiola uses her interior design concept to highlight the Asian roots of the
Hong Kong hotel group and reinterprets the luxurious oasis with her European perspective. Her characteristic
style mix can be seen in every corner: Abstract flowers
blossom on an orange silk rug, gold leaf clouds adorn
the ceilings and golden grilles resemble the wrought- iron gates of Barcelona. The Axor Urquiola collection
harmoniously blends into bathrooms.

SLS Hotel LAS VEGAS
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA
· Owner: SBE
· Designer: Philippe Starck
· Collections: Axor Starck, Axor Starck Classic, Axor Starck Organic
The highly anticipated Las Vegas outpost of the luxury
hotel brand SLS opened in August 2014 to rave reviews.
Led by global design firm Gensler in collaboration with
internationally acclaimed Creator Philippe Starck and
SBE Founder, Chairman and CEO Sam Nazarian, the aesthetic of SLS Las Vegas channels a myriad of
inspirations. A major creative force behind the SLS Hotels
in Beverly Hills and South Beach, (which also feature
Axor Starck), Starck approached the Vegas property in
a similar way, infusing irreverent narratives into his design
philosophies. While there is a shared design vocabulary
among them, SLS Las Vegas draws from its prime location on the famed Strip, capturing its exciting, fast paced
and fun vibe. To add to the playful meets luxe theme,
bathrooms in the property and the hotel’s Ciel Spa are
outfitted with Axor Starck products.
Rose RESIDENCE
Palm Springs, Ca
· Designer: PSModern, LLC
· Collections: Hansgrohe Raindance, Axor Starck
Organic, Axor Citterio SemiPro, Axor Citterio Prep
The Rose project was a complete remodel of a 1960s
Charles Dubois designed mid-century modern home in
Palm Springs, California that included an infrastructural
upgrade (plumbing, electric, HVAC systems, etc.) to current codes and standards. Working with a clean and
minimalist interior design, PSModern used Hansgrohe
and Axor products in all bathrooms and in the kitchen
with the faucets providing the jewels of the space. In the
master bathroom, the sweeping and curvaceous forms
of the Axor Starck Organic Faucet and the Hansgrohe
Raindance E 420 AIR 1-Jet Showerhead and arm help
to break up the linear lines of the interior detailing. The
Axor Citterio SemiPro Kitchen Faucet and Axor Citterio
Prep Kitchen Faucet attract attention with their chrome
finish and elongated lines. With the water restrictions in California, Hansgrohe’s efficient EcoRight technology
and construction of its fittings help with the implementation of the firm’s commitment to sustainability.

no distractions. A bathroom collection, designed by Philippe Starck, that will never go out of fashion. Like a fountain that springs up

Philippe Starck took his
inspiration from two
rivers coming together.
Axor Starck
38
39
The Axor Starck faucet is available with two different
handle designs: A minimalist, cylindrical handle and the
classic feather shaped handle.
Axor Starck
40
41
The Axor Starck X faucet has an almost
sculptural design language. The square plate
seems to weightlessly hover above the sink.

FOLLOW YOUR HEAD AND YOUR HEART.
The Axor Starck Organic collection appeals to heart and intellect in equal measure. Philippe Starck brings design and technology,
ecology and economy, together in harmony. We can enjoy a particularly sensual water experience using the faucet’s unique shower
spray, and save water too. The revolutionary operating concept, with separate temperature and water volume control, makes us more
aware of our consumption of water. And the organic minimalist design shapes the entire collection, from the faucets to the accessories.

The faucet was stripped of anything unnecessary.
Leaving only its essence: Organic, minimalist design.
The design of the Axor Starck Organic collection is sculptural and characterized by slender beauty.
The two handles are harmoniously integrated into the faucet body.
▸ Unique, organic design: Soft shapes and flowing transitions
▸ Minimalist form: The handles and faucet body meld into one
▸ H armonious design in all handle positions, and from all angles
▸ Continues the design legacy of the Axor Starck family

Cold water = green (energy-saving);
Hot water = orange

▸Greater cleanliness and convenience with the
control directly on the spout
▸Normal position at 0.9 GPM:

The wide shower spray guarantees a particularly
sensual experience with water. As when showering,
the hands are enveloped in exhilarating water
droplets. Yet the new jet uses less water than
conventional faucets.
▸ New aerator with 90 micro spray channels:
Softer, more voluminous shower spray with
an experience comparable to that of a
Raindance AIR handshower
▸ A broad, generous shower-style spray for
maximum water coverage
▸ 0.9 GPM flow rate:
Up to 60% water savings vs.
standard 2.5 GPM flow rate

The innovative faucet shower spray creates the
feeling of a greater volume of water, but actually
requires less water consumption than our
standard faucets.
Axor Starck Organic
56
57
The powerful, energy-packed faucet design blends harmoniously
into a wide variety of bathroom environments.
Stunning contrasts:
The flowing contours of the faucet
come together with the minimalist
Starck 2 countertop washbasin
by Duravit.
58
59
Axor Starck Organic
The Axor Starck Organic collection
blends perfectly with different washbasins —
whether they are shallow or deep wash
bowls, wall-mounted or built-in washbasins.
The organic forms of the faucet and the
basin merge together harmoniously.
Thanks to the combination of organic and geometric
shapes, Axor Starck Organic products with concealed
installation offer multiple design options for the shower.
60
61
In keeping with the collection’s
design, the branch-like exposed
thermostat harmoniously blends
into the tub area.
Axor Starck Organic
The freestanding tub filler features an
integrated handshower. Thanks to its
organic, minimalist design, it looks
great with a wide range of tub styles.

Axor Bouroullec
EVERYTHING FLOWS.
The Axor Bouroullec collection is extremely elegant. The organic, minimalist design of Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec remains in the background at all times.
The understated design language of the 40 products that make up this collection makes it particularly versatile. The products blend in harmoniously with
any style. They constitute a paradigm shift in universal design: The individual elements can be positioned to suit any requirements — for example, to make
them more accessible to children.
70
71
The understated design of the faucets from the
Axor Bouroullec collection means that they can
be combined with all kinds of washbasin shapes
and styles, offering numerous design options.
72
73
Axor Bouroullec
The washbasins in the Axor Bouroullec collection offer
plenty of surface area thanks to their integrated shelves,
which flow together with apparent ease. These are
available as a built-in or wall-mounted version.
In the form of space-saving
accessories for the wall or counter,
shelves are a characteristic element
of the Axor Bouroullec collection.
They are not only attractive, but
also functional.
Axor Bouroullec
74
75
With two shelves, you have many options
for spout and handle placement to suit
your own personal requirements.
The Axor Bouroullec Showerpipe
featuring a large overhead
shower and integrated shelves
offers space and convenient
storage in the shower.

Jean-Marie Massaud
NATURE-INSPIRED DESIGN.
Water is the source of all life. Jean-Marie Massaud has developed a bathroom concept that
is at one with nature. The faucet becomes a waterfall. The towel rack, a branching tree.
The bathtub, a lake.

Axor Montreux
TRADITION IN THE BATHROOM.
The Axor Montreux stylish bathroom collection by Phoenix Design sends us
back to the early 20th century and captures the spirit of the Belle Époque
with its romantic spas. It is both an homage to the sophisticated spa resort on
Lake Geneva and a modern collection.
158
159
The Axor Montreux collection fits in perfectly with both traditional
and modern bathroom environments. In every detail, the faucets
invoke memories of traditional industrial design, with modern
technology concealed inside. Charming bathroom accessories
are available to complement this stylish collection.
The Axor Montreux
collection is available
in chrome (shown), as
well as polished nickel
and brushed nickel.

Axor Showers
Antonio Citterio once said that we only really need
30 seconds in the shower to get clean. We shower
for longer because we like to make ourselves feel
better. The Axor brand combines exclusive shower
aesthetics with unique showering comfort. This includes
handshowers, overhead showers, bodysprays, shower
sets and shower systems. All from the Axor designers,
and all using state-of-the-art technology.

Axor ShowerCollection designed by Philippe Starck
HAUTE COUTURE FOR THE SHOWER.
“Just mix it!” is the theme of the Axor ShowerCollection. The modular design can be used to transform the shower into
a tailor-made spa. The simple, customizable system comprising showerheads, shower modules and accessories
provides almost endless design freedom. 5 x 5-inch squares can be freely combined to match the concepts that
we envision: Horizontal or vertical, centered or asymmetrical, arranged freely or in groups — anything is possible.
The Axor ShowerCollection was created in collaboration with Philippe Starck.
