Handicap Management
Golf is a game that is based on the integrity of its
players. The handicap system is a tool used to provide
the opportunity for equitable play by players of various
skill levels, thus the proper management of the handicap is a prerequisite for success. The USGA requires us
to have a handicap committee whose responsibility is
the auditing of play to insure accuracy and to provide
the delivery of accurate handicaps. This can only be accomplished if the players diligently execute the proper
reporting of play (please see list to the right).
Rounds played as practice or in a format that does
not require an individual score should be noted on the
cards.
Unfortunately, many people fail to execute the needed details to permit accurate auditing. All too often this
is seen repetitively by the same individual(s). When this
occurs the handicap committee can make adjustments
to the persons’ handicap.
The accuracy and integrity of the handicap system is
based on the proper completion of scoring and recording of scores. Integrity of play is the cornerstone of the
game.
HANDICAP COMMITTEE
Jon Markey - Chair, Lynn O’Dom, Ann Kitchen,
Art Haywood, Karen Markey
1) Cards MUST be Signed, Dated and Attested. Failing
this makes it impossible to attest to the accuracy of
the scores posted.
2) Scores must be accurately computed.
3) If you complete more than 6 holes of the front
nine you must post a score for nine holes. If you
complete more than 12 holes of 18 you must post a
score for 18 holes. You accomplish this by entering a
score for each hole that you did not complete by
using the equitable stroke control chart.
4) All scorecards must be turned in regardless of
your round. Failing to return a scorecard makes it
impossible for the handicap committee to audit the
system and jeopardizes the handicap system integrity.
5) Last names and handicap numbers must be present
on the scorecard.
6) All scores achieved during regular and tournament
play must be posted (except as noted to the left).

Glenlakes Singles Social Club
Here it is the last month before summer vacation. There will be no meetings in July and August. However, there will be Tuesday
dinners or one luncheon each month...check your schedule.
Memorial Day was a lovely day for a get together and a picnic. The Club served up a delicious picnic fare. We remember our
soldiers, home and far away, with our fervent thoughts and prayers.
A movie and dinner is planned for July 9 and August 13. Sign up and we will inform you of the details when we know what is
playing.
Be sure to check your Eagle or the kiosk for details of the Independence Day schedule.
“Thanksgiving in July” is planned for July 23. Hold that date! It will be as stupendous as last year.
Tuesday dinners for July are Red Lobster on 7/5, Harold Seltzer’s on 7/12, and Guido’s on 7/26. A luncheon will be at Crackers
at Crystal River on 7/19
August Tuesday dinners are Sonny’s on 8/2, Club on 8/9, The Cove on 8/16, La Bella Napoli on 8/30. Luncheon will be Bigun’s
on 8/23.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Summer Off: There will be no
meetings from June through
August. The next meeting
after May will be September
1st.
Away Paddle: September 2124 Siesta Key “away” paddle.
More updated information
will be presented at the
September 1st meeting.
September 1: Meeting at 4pm
in the Sandhill Crane Room.
We will have a very interesting
presentation about the Florida
Kayak Trails. We will also have
sign-up for the September 28th
paddle on the Withlacoochee
River to Hog Island.
September 28: NEW paddle
on the Withlacoochee River
to Hog Island. This promises
to be a fun and interesting
paddle.
On Wednesday May 18th over twenty members of the GlenLakes Kayak began
our “exploratory” paddle from the Bayport Marina to Jenkins Creek. In the
past some of us had paddled from Rogers Park to the Bayport Marina or like
a couple of years ago we paddled out around the mangrove islands to watch
sunset. This time we were on a quest to find the inlet to “Redfish Bayou.” Curt
is on a special task force with Hernando County to identify a potential new
kayak trail beginning at Bayport and ending at either Jenkins Creek or Linda
Pederson Park.
Searching for the “cut-through” to “Redfish Bayou”
After launching from the kayak ramp at Bayport Marina we headed out across
where the Weeki Wachee River empties out into the Gulf, through the mangrove islands into Jenkins Creek. After a number of dead ends we finally discovered the channel leading to “Redfish Bayou”. Curt marked the entrance
and we then paddled on to Jenkins Creek.
October 19: We will have
a return paddle down the
Chassahowitzka River.
November 16: Paddle through
a unique mangrove trail out of
Howard Park in Tarpon Springs
to Lake Avoca.

Some of you may have noticed that trimming of the shrubbery
and flower areas has begun behind the Clubhouse near the practice
green. This is the beginning of a beautification effort supported by
GlenLakes Partnership with GLMGA and GLLGA.
The summer hot weather has certainly returned as we all know. Let’s
all remember to drink a lot of fluids to avoid dehydration. Also, make
sure you are well protected from our Florida sun by using generous
applications of sun protection, level 30 and above. Even though the
snowbirds have left town for a while, we still have some great scorers
as evidenced by the tournament results lately.

Italian Renaissance Club
Buongiorno!
I am filling in for Doris this month and hope I live up to her high
standards.
Our End Of Year Dinner took place on May 15th at Papa Joe’s Italian
Restaurant. Many of our members enjoyed an excellent meal topped
off with some great dessert choices. The cannoli were deliziose and
the company fantastico. Molto grazie to Matt Roseanu for arranging
for this most enjoyable event. See photos accompanying this article.
While dining and chatting we were presented with a slide show of all the
photos taken at our 10th Anniversary Gala.
Joe Giarratana (Papa Joe) was presented with our Person Of The Year
award in 2013. Sadly it was destroyed in a fire at the restaurant. We had
another one made up and did the presentation at the dinner. A lovely
basket arranged by Joanne Reilly was won by Emily Connors, daughter
of Jeff and Helen Connors. Una buona occasione è stata da tutti! A
good time was had by all!
As my term as president of the Italian Renaissance Club comes to an
end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Officers and
Board of Directors.

GlenLakes Ladies Golf Association
By Honora Browne
Presidents Report – Mary Vuolo
Summer is here!
Really seems like the year is flying by. We have just completed
the Ladies Summer Member-Member.
Congratulations to
all the winners. Results will be in the August Eagle. Also
back for 2016 is the Summer Eclectic to be held on July 14 &
15.
Committees are formed and plans are underway for our
2016 Holiday Invitational and the 2017 Ladies Member-Guest.
Both of these events require a lot of time and work, so I hope
that all will support them. Look for Save the Date around the
club and in this article.
The ladies association and the men’s association have teamed
up and initiated plans for a beautification program for the
course. We have had meetings with the front office and hope
you will see some improvements starting with the area around
the putting green and the pro shop.
Let’s give a warm and friendly welcome back to Sue Gripton
who has rejoined the GLLGA.
The Nominating Committee recently sent out a letter advising
of the need for members to contact them if they would be
willing to run or know other members who would be willing
to run for the offices of President or Vice President. Please
present these names to the Nominating Committee as quickly
as possible.
In closing, just a friendly reminder to wear your sunscreen and
drink plenty of water as we move into the heat up of summer
and remember “When it’s breezy, swing easy” and great
golfing. See you around the club!

Rule of the Month – Dottie Hainey
Play your tee shot from between, and not in front of, the tee
markers. You may play your tee shot from up to 2 club lengths
behind the front line of the tee markers. If you play your tee
shot from outside this area, in match play there is no penalty,
but your opponent may require you to replay you stroke
provided he does so immediately.
In stroke play you incur a two stroke penalty, the stroke itself
does not count and you must play the ball from within the
correct area.

Scarlett Belles
The May Scarlett Belles’ Spring Luncheon at the Plantation Inn in Crystal River was a huge success thank to the efforts of Marie Franco.
A special note of appreciation to our Lady Shutterbug, Norma Spector, for all the beautiful pictures of this Spring Event included in
this article! Each member attending a lovely planting of purple “Catmint” to take home. For our gardening Red Hatters that Catmint
should get to 2 ft. tall!
One June 8 our adventurous members headed for the Hard Rock Casino for an enjoyable day of festivities - trying our luck as well as
one of the best lunches in the Tampa area.

TENNIS NEWS|
Judy Jeanette | Director of Tennis
Cert. Elite USPTA Professional
The girls love playing tennis at GlenLakes. Great games and friends
come hand in hand. Left to Right: Lynn, Patti, Gail, Velma
Auggie is always working to keep our GL Tennis Courts in tip top
condition. GL is super lucky to have someone that cares so much
about the condition of the courts.
Things are Heating Up
The Boyz and Girlz of summer are troopers. It seems like it just
keeps getting hotter every year.
• Carry your Cool Towels to bring your body temperatures
down.
seems to be a learning curve to winning at the All England Club
and it goes beyond returning big serves and hitting forehands on
the low bouncing grass courts.
On the Men’s side the last years have been dominated by Roger
Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal…and then there was the
homeboy, Andy Murray who won in 2013.
On the Women’s side Serena Williams has dominated. Then
follows her sister Venus Williams, Petra Kvitova and the French girl
who won it once and retired a month later at the age of 28, Marion
Bartoli.
No matter what, this year will be just as exciting and entertaining
as those in the past.
Is anyone going this year?
Don’t miss the action…and don’t forget the strawberries and
cream.
•
Drink lots of fluids…water being the best.
•
Wear your hat, sunglasses and light colored, sports tech
(wicking) clothing to stay cool.
•
Please listen to your bodies and sit down and cool off if
you start to feel the least little bit uncomfortable.
10 MORE Reasons
As I discussed in last month’s newsletter as written by Dr. Jack
Groppel and printed in Tennis Industry Magazine…
”Tennis outperforms most other sports in many different areas”.
Physical Reasons to Play Tennis
1. Aerobic fitness…fat burning, cardiovascular fitness and
maintaining high energy levels
2. Anaerobic fitness…short, intense bursts of activity
followed by rest helps muscles use oxygen efficiently.
3. Ability to accelerate…by practicing sprinting, jumping
and lunging.
4. Powerful first step…by requiring anticipation, quick
reaction time and explosive first step.
5. Speed…through a series of side-to-side and up and
back sprints to chase the ball.
6. Leg strength…through hundreds of starts and stops
which build stronger leg muscles.
7. General body coordination…you have to move and
adjust your upper body to hit the ball.
8. Gross motor control…court movement and ball-striking
skills require control of large muscle groups.
9. Fine motor control…the use of touch shots like angled
volleys, drop shot and lobs.
10. Agility…forcing you to change direction as many as 5
times in 10 seconds during a typical tennis point.
WIMBLEDON
June 27 – July 10
Since 1877, Wimbledon has been the sport’s Holy Grail. Legends
have played on these hallowed grounds. This tournament has
been glorious for some and heartbreaking for others. There
Roving Reporter Velma George is a Lucky Dog
Our very own Roving Reporter VJG will be sitting front and center
at this month’s Davis Cup Matches.
The USTA picked Beaverton, Oregon to be the site of the Davis
Cup Quarter Finals. This is Velma’s summer tennis stomping
grounds. It is literally just out her back door.
Team Captain, Jim Courier, will be selecting the US players
about 10 days before the event. The matches will air on the Tennis
Channel.
Those watching can look for our GlenLakes friends, Velma and
Richard, sitting in the stands.
Velma will be taking photos and writing an article to be posted
next month about this great experience.
GO USA !!!
RAIN and COURTS
This is just a reminder that you should stop play if it starts raining
and the courts start to get wet.
You should not start play if the court surface is wet, puddled or
shiny from water sitting on top.
Never drag a broom through a puddle. NEVER EVER!!
If signs are posted that the courts are closed…please adhere to
the directive.
Be patient and wait until the tennis courts are dry enough to play
without damaging the surface.
Report to Judy if you notice any area or line that needs attention.
Please be as specific as you can to describe the location of the
issue. Text or call: 352-232-0321.
Thank you for your “Rain and Court Awareness” and helping to
keep our GL courts in good shape.
