As we celebrate the achievements of the past year, we have words of
gratitude to each of you – the steadfast philanthropists listed in this

A Sound Investment
Wells Fargo Supports the Latina Leadership Network
Many families in America have a recent
generation that broke down barriers —

a generation that was the first to attend
college, perhaps start their own businesses
and utilize new skills to benefit their local
community.
Community colleges are a vital gateway for these
individuals. Thanks to Wells Fargo, current “firstgeneration” students on the Central Coast are getting
motivation and assistance to realize their academic goals.
Wells Fargo supports the Cuesta College Latina
Leadership Network for “Educate Si se Puede” (“Educate,
Yes it is Possible”), a conference set for March 30 geared
specifically towards high school seniors to inspire and
help them understand academic opportunities. The event
will feature a panel of prominent local Latino and Latina
community leaders, each talking about their challenges
and successes, along with a campus tour, a live DJ and a
lunch for students.
Mark Corella, district manager of Wells Fargo in San
Luis Obispo, will be a guest on the panel. The former firstgeneration and community college student knows how
vital a support network is for these students.
“Cuesta and other community colleges are a first step
– not everyone can go to a four-year university,” Corella
said. “It allows students the time to get introduced to the
numerous career opportunities that exist, find themselves
and make a closer connection to their chosen profession.”
However, just getting to Cuesta College in the first

place can be a tremendous barrier to a student who has
no family members or friends that have gone to college.
Many students need support and encouragement, which
makes this conference so important according to Estella
Vazquez, an English as a Second Language specialist and
recruiter at Cuesta.

like this help Latino students understand that regardless
of barriers, they can still achieve their educational goals.
These students have few or no role models. Applying to
Cuesta or for financial aid is a real challenge.”
Corella agrees: “The example we set is extremely
important. We need success stories that come out of
community colleges. Statistically, the dropout rate for
the Latino population is higher than the norm. They need
mentors, support and encouragement.”
Vazquez, Corella and Cuesta counselor Glenda
Moscoso all worked closely to make the “Educate Si
se Puede” conference a reality. The Cuesta College
Foundation, Counseling Department and Sabrina
Robertson in Tech Prep/Business Education have
provided valuable assistance. This will be one of several
successful conferences put together by the Latina
Leadership Network.
Wells Fargo’s support of Cuesta is directly in line
with the company’s culture of philanthropy. Last year, it
gave more than $219 million to 19,000 nonprofits. The
company provided over $66 million towards supporting
schools and educational programs. According to the
Chronicle of Philanthropy, a newspaper that covers the
nonprofit world, Wells Fargo is one of the nation’s
top five cash donors.
Investing in people is a sound business practice –
especially when they’re the business owners, community
leaders and political decision makers of the future.
“When our communities succeed, we
succeed,” Corella said.

Generosity Defined
Edgar and Eiko Pease estate donates
more than $1 million to aid Cuesta
Cuesta College has been blessed with a
multitude of friends and supporters over
the years. Some have been with us from the
beginning, possibly as alums or former staff
and/or faculty. Other generous individuals,
such as Eiko Pease, simply recognized the
importance of Cuesta’s mission.
Eiko Pease and her husband, Dr. Edgar Pease, moved to
San Luis Obispo County from Arizona in the early 1970s.
Edgar had just retired from a successful dental practice.
An avid outdoorsman, he purchased a ranch between
Atascadero and Morro Bay, where he lived with Eiko until
passing away in 1978.
Eiko continued to live in the area and met Barbara
George, then the executive director of Advancement. The
meeting was arranged through Jim Merzon, a longtime
friend of Cuesta, whose daughter-in-law Alison Merzon is
an instructor here.

World War II, Eiko lived
simply and was a generous individual. After speaking
with Barbara George, she was intrigued by Cuesta and the
opportunities it provided to students.
As a result of that meeting, Eiko willed her late
husband’s estate to Cuesta – valued at more than
$1 million – to support areas “where the need is greatest.”
Because of Eiko’s generosity, Cuesta has been able to
support its programs and student services through grants,
scholarships and other areas that are underfunded by the
state.
Eiko passed away in 2007. A frequent traveler, she
enjoyed her time with family, many of whom she included
in her journeys overseas. Cuesta will always be grateful for
Eiko’s support and will continue to honor her memory.

Continuing a Legacy
The Sophidion Foundation
Legacies are curious things. They carry on
traditions yet have the power to transform
– they are a catalyst for positive change.
The Sophidion Foundation continues the legacy
of Sophia Clarke, a longtime supporter of California
community college students. Most recently, the Sophidion
Foundation generously gave more than $110,000 to
Cuesta’s nursing program.
Sophia’s son, Jim Clarke, and his wife, Karen, feel
strongly about the nursing program. “We were impressed
by the quality of the program and are especially pleased
with the work of the Cuesta College Foundation and how
they support the college. It’s a good social investment,” he
said.
“The shortage of qualified nurses is a critical problem,”
said Jim. In the past, Sophia has supported a variety
of causes. She was a major contributor to a $400,000
facility, named after her son, which houses classrooms
and a hanger for an aircraft maintenance program. A
performing arts center was also named in her honor. Both
are located at Mt. San Antonio College.
“However, the lack of qualified nurses affects everyone.
Healthcare does not discriminate. We need these
professionals,” said Jim.
Originally, the Clarkes dreamed of supporting an
aviation or culinary program on Cuesta's North
County campus. A former community college student, Jim
is exceptionally enthusiastic about programs that provide
real-world, hands-on training outside of the classroom.
“Whether it’s nursing, business or mechanics, we
need to emphasize real world problem solving. There is
huge difference between that and just theory,” Jim said.
“You have to get dirty. You can’t learn everything in the
classroom. You have to work for it.”
The Cuesta College Nursing Program follows this
philosophy, as do other valuable programs that are
supported by the Sophidion Foundation.
“Our family did quite well in business. Now it’s our turn
to give back and invest in a society that allowed us to do
well,” he said. “We feel grateful to continue my mother’s
legacy and support the Cuesta College Nursing Program.”

The Sum of a
Remarkable Life
The Ralph M. & Grace Warten
Scholarship
Every day is a gift. What you do in life – your
actions, passions and values – can change
lives long after your days are gone.
Grace Warten certainly knows this. Her husband,
Ralph, a mathematics professor at Cal Poly, died in a
tragic car accident three months before retirement. Grace
and Ralph were in the vehicle when it overturned into a
flowing creek bed just miles from home.
While submerged, Grace was pulled to safety by the
other driver. But no one saw that Ralph was still trapped
in the car.
Shortly after, in July of 1997, Grace established the
Ralph M. & Grace Warten Scholarship for Statistics,
Computer Science, Math and Teaching at Cuesta College.
A scholarship was also established at Cal Poly.
Over the years, the scholarship has assisted dozens of
Cuesta students preparing for careers in math, science
and other related fields. In the past five years alone, 13
students received more than $8,500. The latest recipient is
Jason Wilson. (See story next page.)
“Ralph always wanted to teach mathematics and had
a great interest in students,” said Grace. “He had a hard
time completing his education and felt strongly about
‘giving back.’ ”
Ralph emigrated from Germany to the United States
with only six years of formal schooling. It took him seven
years to get a bachelor’s degree.
After graduating magna cum laude from Brooklyn
College, Ralph went to Purdue University on a scholarship
from the National Science Foundation. He went on
to earn a a doctorate in mathematics.
He began teaching after a successful career in the
computer industry. “He understood the importance of
math education in today’s society,” said Grace.
And it’s more critical than ever. According to the
California Council on Science and Technology, significant
declines are projected for the number of science,
technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM,
degrees awarded in California. Strengthening the teaching
of math and science and improving business skill-sets of
students is critical if California is to
maintain its competitive edge
and economic growth,
experts say.

was students,” said Grace.
“This is the perfect way to
honor his memory.”

Scholarship Makes All the Difference
Dream big, keep moving, don’t give up – phrases that could be called cliché but
are the mantra of many community college students.
Unfortunately for many students, with rising tuition and other related costs, all of
the determination in the world will not get you through school without a little help.
Jason Wilson is a great example. He moved to the Central Coast from the Lake
Tahoe area with few resources. The three-year Cuesta student, who is preparing
to transfer to a four-year university, received the Ralph M. & Grace Warten
Scholarship in August. The money he received was a big help, he said.
The scholarship has been vital in paying daily costs, such as books, and the
application process for transferring to a university.
Jason plans to major in business, preferably international business with a position
in a Spanish-speaking country. He has already applied to business school at three
University of California and seven California State University campuses.
Cuesta has been an excellent beginning.
“I love the learning experience at Cuesta, I have been fortunate to have some
great instructors,” he said. “Jeff Grover was a favorite. Lisha Duarte for Spanish was
another. Both are extremely passionate.”
Instructors like these, along with scholarships, are what allow Jason
and his classmates to achieve their academic goals. “I really can’t
thank Mrs. Warten enough for this,” Jason said. “It made all of
the difference.”

A Personal Remembrance
A Gift from One
Mother to Another
The Alice Thompson Scholarship

Alice Thompson would
be happy to know that
Cuesta College students

help.
Her scholarship assists single
mothers.
My mom, who died in 1994,
knew a thing about that: She

raised three boys by herself
in the 1960s. A struggle? Yes, but she did a good job of
shielding her kids from her financial status. I wonder now
how she did it; the pressure must have been overwhelming
at times. But she had an inner strength – something she
would agree all single moms develop.
That’s why it made sense to start a scholarship that
helps women raising children while earning a living and
getting a college education. Offering a hand to someone
you can help was a no-brainer for my mom.
Alice retired in 1981 and moved to Morro Bay – a place
she discovered while vacationing. She wrote to a friend on
a never-mailed postcard that she wanted to move before
getting too old. She was 56.
When she relocated, in a sense, she came home. On the
Central Coast, away from her own family, she created a
new one. She forged new friendships and finally found her
niche – working with and for Cuesta students.
Those young people energized her and gave her a fresh
outlook. She worked for Cuesta just over a decade to May
of 1992, mostly in Admissions and Records, which allowed
her to work directly with students.
The 1980s was a time of robust growth for the college
and a difficult period for Admission and Records workers
as the student population nearly doubled. Like a mom,
she came to the aid of any new student bewildered by the
college’s bureaucracy.
During this period, as department workloads increased,
administrators established directives to cut staff time for
one-on-one work with students.
Being an independent woman, she occasionally bent
those rules to help out students. She paid a price from
her bosses if those well-intentioned antics that “violated
protocol” were uncovered, but she felt she was making a
difference.
The scholarship, which made its first award in 1999,
continues that same spirit of making a difference.
My wife, Johannah, and I regularly attend the annual
scholarship receptions. While the students find the funds
they receive a great help – have you checked out the price
of textbooks lately? – many say that being selected means
much more.
Some frame their scholarship certificates. When
pressures mount during the semester, they can look at
that certificate, gain inspiration in the knowledge that
someone other than family and friends believes they will
succeed.
That makes a huge difference, I think. My mom would
like that.
Robin Cascino, a single mom with three kids, was the
first recipient of her scholarship.
Like many who followed, Robin spelled out her
educational goals in a letter, writing as much to herself as
to my wife and I, about the implications of receiving the
award. The decision “to further my education and choose
a career regardless of my circumstances,” she said, “has
birthed a fountain of hope in each of my children. That
hope alone is far greater than any worldly riches.”
She ended the note with a comment that would have
made my mom smile:
“Thank you for choosing to be involved in my life.”

Making a Better Life for her Family
Laura Drake’s defining moment came while pregnant with her daughter, Cali.
“At that point I made a declaration that I would get my life back on track,
make something of myself – something that I would be proud of – and show my
daughter the importance of an education in order to obtain a better life,” she said.
Cali was born in 2007. As a single mom on welfare, Drake took advantage of
CalWORKS, which provides vocational training, employment services, academic
and career counseling, and supportive services, “and that enabled me to start at
Cuesta,” she told the audience of more than 250 donors and student recipients at
the 2011 Scholarship Reception.
Drake, 43, received four scholarships that August day, including the Alice
Thompson Scholarship, which benefits single mothers.
The funds are making it possible for her to pursue her dream of obtaining
an associate of arts degree in Cuesta’s Computer Applications and Office
Administration and becoming an administrative assistant.
In addition to her studies, Drake works part time in the college’s Extended
Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) office that provides help to
low-income students on a journey similar to her own.
Drake takes pride in that journey, which started at Cuesta when she
was 18. There were detours along the way, including taking time to
care for her father who battled cancer. She finally returned to Cuesta
in the summer of 2009 – with steely resolve.
“I’m not only doing this for myself, but for my daughter as
well,” she said in August. “I will continue to stress to her that
education is a must. And through hard work and diligence
many doors will open. And I hope that my story will inspire
the young and young at heart keeping alive the idea that
anything is possible – no matter what obstacles one
encounters. I’m living proof that you can make a difference
in your life.
“It’s your choice to make, so make it happen.”
