the Women’s Home 2011 Annual Report
As I reflect on our 2011 accomplishments, I realize
how grateful I am to so many supporters. The
Women’s Home could not have more than doubled
its service capacity without the help of each of our
donors and volunteers. Each dollar and hour of
service means more women’s lives are restored and
enriched.
Thank you to our 2011 leadership team. Jim
Drew, President of the Board of Directors in 2011,
helped ensure that once again there was 100%
financial participation from our Board which set the
stage for an overall successful 2011. The Women’s
Home Partnership, our dedicated volunteer arm,
guided by their President, Jerry Fabian, helped
us host another successful LPGA golf tournament
and raise reNew reDux, our fashion show featuring
the best of our Cottage Shop and many of your
closets, to a new level. The Partnership was largely
responsible for The Home recording more than
30,000 volunteer service hours valued at more than
half a million dollars.

funds.
I am proud of the
accomplishments
of our Young Professionals and their President,
Semmes Burns. They hosted a family picnic, an
awards banquet and the holiday party for the
residents. In addition, their Crawfish Boil set a
record for attendance and contributions.Their
energy and dedication is inspiring. Special thanks
to Susan Walker-Spalding, a member of the Board
of Directors, and her husband Norm Spalding for
stepping up to chair our annual gala. It was both
elegant and fun!
Because of the support we have received, our
WholeLife Program now operates successfully
on two campuses. At each location, women
are offered the opportunity to set and achieve
goals in six wellness areas: emotional, spiritual,
Executive Director’s Message
physical, social, fiscal and vocational. This model
of care leads to each woman achieving her unique
potential. Near Midtown, our treatment and
transitional housing program has been able to help
women recover who were homeless due to substance
abuse and mental illness. For the past three years,
84% of the women who participated for six months
or longer left with income and housing. In Spring
Branch, we opened the doors to a sober apartment
community, Jane Cizik Garden Place, not only for
our graduates but for other women like them who
need housing that is safe, supportive and affordable.
Over the years, as women have come into our
treatment and transitional housing program, I have
heard them say how much they wished that they had
found The Women’s Home sooner and how grateful
they were for a safe community that helped support
their recovery. I now hear these same sentiments
from the women who live at Jane Cizik Garden
Place.
The need for this kind of community is great.
The complex has reached capacity and there are 70
women on our waiting list.
As I look forward, I can see another opportunity
for The Women’s Home to expand its impact. I have
seen young mothers with their children come to
Jane Cizik Garden Place looking for a safe place to
live. Our one bedroom apartments are not an option
for these families. While it is true that single women
are still a low priority for services, it is also true
that mothers and children are the fastest growing
segment of the homeless population. This year,
as part of implementing a new strategic plan, the
Board of Directors will look at options for serving
both single women and women and their families.
I am very excited about the future of The Women’s
Home. Whatever path The Home takes, it will be
effective and your dollars will be used wisely.
Unique to The Women’s Home...WholeLife
For many years, a distinguishing feature
of The Women’s Home transitional treatment
model at our Montrose campus is our
WholeLife program. This unique and timetested program serves as an individualized
approach towards setting goals in a life under
transformation. Residents are assisted in
six areas of wellness: spiritual, physical,
vocational, financial, social and emotional
through a process of growth and achievement.
Volunteers, interns and staff all strive to help
our residents balance their efforts of recovery
to insure healthier lives equipped with lifeskills
training and tools that they carry forward to new
horizons.
The WholeLife program also supports the
foundation of the sober living community at
Jane Cizik Garden Place, an 87-unit affordable
housing complex for single women on a modest
income. Completed in 2010 in Spring Branch,
Jane Cizik Garden Place is ideal for graduates
of The Women’s Home and other self-sufficient
women seeking a safe, drug and alcohol free
environment.
Several design elements and amenities
were built around the WholeLife concept;
the beautifully crafted courtyard garden, the
peaceful labyrinth and spiritual meditation
room, and the exercise center overlooking the
patio and gazebo area. A computer lab and
community room is available to all residents.
On site case management services are also
based on WholeLife concept. A full-time case
counselor offers assistance in mental and
physical health care, food and transportation
resources, substance abuse treatment, legal
help, job search training, budgeting, faith based
referrals, and applying for Medicare, Medicaid
and Social Security benefits. Enrichment
activities encourage tenants to socialize with
neighbors.
Jane Cizik Garden Place provides a national
model for permanent supportive housing
and proves that WholeLife wellness can
be fulfilled beyond transitional treatment.
Tenants who benefit from WholeLife
principles are successful and experience the
joy felt from giving back to others.

we know that the years ahead will be full of

BECAUSE OF YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT, CATHY’S STORY IS POSSIBLE
WholeLife Award Winner
Cathy Bradley was our 2011
WholeLife Award Winner.
Her amazing story of growth,
transformation, and recovery
will no doubt touch you deeply.
Cathy first became homeless at age six. Her
childhood was a series of moves from house to house,
trailer to trailer without the benefit of loving parents.
She was, in her own words, a “wild child.”
By age seventeen she was living with an abusive
man nearly twice her age. She dreamed of becoming
a hairdresser, but instead her new partner introduced
her to methamphetamines. She dropped out of
beauty school addicted to the drugs that would
enslave her for the next nineteen years of her life.
In 2006 all of that changed. Living in Houston
she sought help at Riverside Hospital, a publicly
funded detox facility. From there she entered
Santa Maria Hostel, a short term drug and alcohol
treatment program. After 90 days of intensive drug
counseling and sobriety, a counselor helped her find
The Women’s Home.
Cathy embraced the opportunity to participate
fully in The Home’s WholeLife program. She opened
herself to new spiritual practices like meditation,
silent retreats and spiritual groups with other women.
She was introduced to the 12 Step program and
secured a sponsor. She attended counseling sessions
and groups with licensed professional staff and began
her emotional healing.
During her career exploration and assessment,
she was diagnosed with Irlen syndrome, a perceptual
problem that prevents a percentage of the general
population from being able to read, learn or study
efficiently. With proper medical intervention using
color overlays to anchor the words on the page,
Cathy learned to read. She attended concerts, theatre
productions and book studies for the first time in her
life. She was introduced to nutritional education and
ways to stay fit. She learned coping skills to deal with
life’s stressful moments.
Her lifelong dream of becoming a hairdresser
was encouraged and supported with a grant from the
Rotary Club, assistance from DARS (Department
of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services), and
additional public monies available for job training.
She successfully graduated from the Paul Mitchell
School where she went on to become a Learning
Leader to teach others to realize their own dream.
Her signature cowboy boots and winning smile make
her a positive role model for a group of students who
return monthly to cut the hair of current residents of
The Home.
Just five years since her journey of transformation
began, Cathy happily resides at Jane Cizik Garden
Place in her own apartment. This safe, sober and
affordable community provides continued support
and encouragement for her lifelong journey. She
serves a sponsor to three women at a time, providing
peer guidance through the important process of
recovery. She has reunited with her family; her three
children see their mom living successfully.
A combination of self knowledge, strength,
supportive environment, good fortune and grace
allowed Cathy to escape the death grip of hard-core
addiction, despair and homelessness. At The Home
we have provided the supportive environment. Our
licensed professionals demonstrate that esteem,
acceptance, love and humane interaction are realities
in this world, contrary to what she had learned all of
her life. For her part, Cathy provided a willingness, a
faith and courage to open her mind and her heart to
the amazing mystery and wonder of a new life. Congratulations to Cathy, our 2011 WholeLife
Award winner.
