ALBURY’S Frank Lange and Howlong’s Janice (Jan) Haynes have been
honoured for their work, both receiving 2014 NSW Seniors Week Local
Achievement Awards.
Member for Albury, Greg Aplin
this week congratulated the duo who
received the awards as part of NSW
seniors celebrations.

Club and the Manual Activities Centre
over this period of time.

The Minister for Ageing, the Hon
John Ajaka said: “These awards are the

to seniors for their enthusiasm and
impressive commitment to their community.”

AUSTRALIA is gradually becoming more civilised with relation to animal welfare. There is
a push to stop horse steeple racing, caged hens,
unregulated dog/cat breeding and other animal
welfare issues which includes rodeos.
Animal welfare is governed by two Acts: the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 (POCTA) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
Regulations 2008.
I would encourage the readers of this letter to
go onto the internet, locate these two Acts and
read them. Especially read the first Act (Section 9) which deals with cruelty and consider the
words used which represent cruelty.
Rodeos take normally placid animals and do
things to them to get them agitated and stressed
out enough to buck fiercely in an attempt to get
rid of what is on their backs and get relief from
the flank strap and spurs that are used on these
animals. This treatment of these animals clearly,
to any sensible person, breaches both these Acts.
On 15 March a rodeo was held in Chiltern
(Albury–Wodonga NewsWeekly, Wednesday 12
March). The rodeo stock was provided by the
McPhee Rodeo Company.
I’d like to witness just how Mr McGhee
‘trains’ their stock animals to prepare them for
rodeo events. I have recently contacted local,
state and federal members regarding rodeos and
have so far had only a few replies which have just
passed the buck. Why not just ban flank straps,
spurs and electric probes, which are used, and see
how well a rodeo would proceed?
Rodeos are nothing more than a form of animal cruelty just to entertain ourselves.
Australians need to continue becoming progressively more civilised and banning rodeos
would be a step in the right direction. Why can’t
we just leave the animals to live out their natural
lives?

will step up to take on a new
challenge.
Ms Charlton has been
named new Narrandera Council
General Manager and will end
her Albury tenure on 2 May almost 16 years after arriving to
take up the position of human
resources manager.
Ms Charlton has been responsible for corporate services
since 2006 and said she was
ready for the next challenge in
her career.

thought we’d raise so much money
for cancer.”
After the initial shock of seeing
their ponytails drop to the floor and
feeling the spiky stub of their new
hairdo, the girls declared their new
look as “different”.
“I was crying when the hairdresser was shaving my head but it
feels good to have done it for a good
cause,” Andraya said.
Elyshia has donated her 40-centimetre ponytail to Locks of Love
in the US, which will transform
the hair into a wig for people with
cancer.
Both girls have been touched by
cancer. Andraya’s great aunt had
leukemia and her grandfather died
from complications from cancer,
while Elyshia has members on both
TRINITY College students Elyshia
Poidevin and Andraya Vesely drew
a standing ovation from their peers
when the final lock of hair fell in
their Be Brave and Shave fund-raising effort at the college on Friday.
The Year 10 girls embarked on
their fund-raising quest for cancer
hoping to reach $3000 but surpassed that figure well before they
succumbed to the shears - raising
more than $4000 thanks to friends,
family and schoolmates.
“We are actually just overwhelmed, we’ve had unbelievable
support,” Elyshia said between
tears.
“I never expected so many
people to donate to watch us get
our heads shaved. And we never
sides of her family with cancer.
Trinity College Head of Senior
School Malcolm Thomas said the
college was proud of the students’
efforts.
“They’ve done a tremendous job
and have been terribly committed to
it,” Mr Thomas said.
“We encourage our students
to be independent and to follow
through and that has certainly happened here. Elyshia and Andraya
have organised all of this themselves, from setting up the website
to organising the hairdresser and
public speaking to garner more support.”
St Matthew’s church community
got behind the cause to support Andraya, whose family attends regularly, raising almost $2000 while
Volz Australia, owned by Elyshia’s
parents, committed $500 with the
offer to double it if the students successfully raised awareness around
cancer.
Elyshia’s father Tim Poidevin
said he was heading straight from
the shave to his computer to double
the donation online.
“Originally it was as an incentive,” Mr Poidevin said.
“I just didn’t want them to shave
their heads for a bit of a laugh but
they have really raised awareness of
cancer - not to mention money. And
people can still donate.”

place for two gospel groups and
locals will be the winners.
On Saturday, 29 March the
Melbourne Singers Of Gospel
will meet Canberra’s Strange
Weather Gospel Choir halfway in Albury (St Matthew’s
Church, 520 Kiewa St).
That will be 60 singers in
one church - so it’s sure to get

stomping and clapping to gospel favourites including People

Hill bike ride with a difference
PREPARATION is underway
for the Blind Challenge charity bike ride.
The ride, from Mt Beauty up the mountain to Falls
Creek, will be held on Saturday 29 March, starting at 8am.
It is a distance of 32 kilometres, rising 1300 metres
(average gradient 6 per cent,
maximum gradient 10 per
cent).
The ride finishes at the
Falls Creek village car park
and participants are responsible for returning back to Mt
Beauty.
The event aims to raise
$20,000 for the Mae Sot Blind
School, a residential school
for blind children, in Mae Sot,
Thailand.
The school is ready to expand as they now have a larger
premises which can accommodate many more children
but are limited by funding.
A minibus and bike trailer
is available to return participants back to Mt Beauty
if needed (bookings are required).
The ride will be undertaken by blind or vision impaired
cyclists on tandem bikes, together with a sighted rider.

Drought cash not much help
“Governments at all levels have a responsibility to assist those who are vulnerable.”
Professor Hicks said assistance should be targeted at solutions that would ensure the long-term
sustainability of communities.
“In both manufacturing and farming communities, it is becoming increasingly apparent that
substantial restructuring of industry is required,”
he said.
“The new package will help farmers with
short-term problems, but for those who are
locked into farms with limited long-term viability it is unhelpful at best and may even result in
them staying in the industry when an assisted exit
would be a better use of government funds.”
CSU researcher Dr Merrilyn Crichton has
studied the social impacts of the last drought,
ending in 2011, and the roll-out of drought-relief
packages.
She said drought assistance, particularly in the
form of better access to mental health services,

was urgently needed but the critical factor would
be how the new measures were implemented.
“In researching the effects of the last drought,
it was clear that the biggest challenge was getting
mental health workers into the regions to do the
work,” she said.
“Because there weren’t many rural mental
health workers, and those that were in the regions
were already in high demand, a lot of people
brought in were from the cities. They didn’t necessarily understand the problems rural people
had, and so people in rural communities were reluctant to talk to them.”
Dr Crichton said previous experience might
have created some scepticism in rural communities about the effectiveness of drought relief packages.
“We saw as the last drought went on, the suicide rate among rural men rose,” she said.
“Previous drought relief packages have tried
to get around the shortage of available mental
health workers by replacing in-person consultations with Skype or phone calls.
“But when you have got someone in crisis you
need to be face-to-face with them. We’re only
at the beginning of this drought and the mental
health workers are overworked already.

THE Federal Government’s drought relief package will be of limited benefit to rural communities according to Charles Sturt University (CSU)
experts.
Economics Professor John Hicks said the current crisis affected whole communities, but the
package offered little for those not directly involved in farming.
“The stress in farming communities from
drought is matched by the stress in urban communities dependent on manufacturing when major industries close down,” he said.
“No, or little, farm production means falling
farm incomes and falling expenditure in local
communities.
“It is therefore not just farmers who are impacted, but also those servicing farming from the
service and manufacturing sectors. The economic
problems multiply throughout the community,
resulting in job losses and economic stress for
many.

outlet inside our store,” Lavington Shepparton Cannery XS owner Craig English said.
“If you shop here at Shepparton Cannery XS, I’m local, Mark’s local and you money stays
on the Border.”
Mr Bollinghaus said doing business with Shepparton Cannery XS has been a great move
business wise, and with a change of name, locals will know they’re buying a quality product.
“We were under Bordertown Meats but nobody really knew who they were,” he said.
“Haus of Meat has been around for a lot longer and the reputation has been strong, so we
decided to announce that it is Haus of Meat in trading a fortnight ago.
“People want something they can trust and the name, having been around so long, it’s known
as the better butcher on the Border with the quality we have.
“It’s like a DFO, so we can take all the stuff out there which goes hand in hand with the
things Craig does – we have a big range of quality products.”
Mr English likes to refer to the cannery as a ‘one-stop-shop,’ with bargains you just can’t find
anywhere else on the Border.
“You can come here and buy all your meat, buy your groceries,” he said.
“One thing we say to a lot of people is ‘we don’t have everything you can buy at the supermarket, but what we’ve got is bloody cheap.’
“We’re anywhere from 10 to 70 per cent off supermarket’s recommended retail prices.
We’re a clearance store, not a supermarket, and we search the country high and low to get
the best possible price we can on all of the groceries and give the people of the Border the best
opportunity to save a dollar.”
Shepparton Cannery XS is also excited at keeping SPC on board after recent assistance from
the Victorian government.
“It’s good news that the Victorian government put some money into SPC,” Mr English said.
“The major supermarkets have actually come out and said the home brand stuff will be made
by SPC.
“SPC will be here to stay for many many years, so all of our canned fruit and veg, baked
beans, spaghetti, we basically only stock SPC out of Goulburn Valley, so we support the locals,
like we always do.

Music is back
ALBURYCITY’S popular Music in the Gardens has returned
for an Autumn series which will
include some top Australian
musicians.
The event kicked off at the
weekend with Australia’s jazz
legends Galapagos Duck and
will continue each month right
through to November.
AlburyCity Team Leader
of Events Ros Walls said the
autumn series of Music in the
Gardens promised to top the
wildly successful 2013 series.
“We’re incredibly fortunate
to have performers of this calibre come to Albury for a free
performance,” she said.
“The event is a great way to
spend a Sunday afternoon and
even with temperatures in the
low twenties we still expect a
great crowd to turn out for the
jazz treat of the year - there
just may be a few more jackets,
brollies and perhaps some of
the sumptuous picnic lunches
people bring along might include some warm treats.
“We also encourage people
to bring their chairs along as
predicted showers on the weekend may leave the gardens a
little damp underfoot.”
Music in the Gardens is a series of free outdoor concerts in
the spectacular Albury Botanic
Gardens.
On the third Sunday of
March, April, May, September, October and November,
the gardens are transformed
into an outdoor amphitheatre
where residents can enjoy some
of Australia’s best musicians
while relaxing on the beautifully landscaped lawns.

Both clarion and a whisper
THE Invenio singers are fast gathering recognition from audiences and
critics alike for their innovative and

composition and performance and

Formed by prodigious singer/
composer, Gian Slater, Invenio explores conceptual composition,
extended vocal technique, fluid improvising and choreographed movement.
Slater has convened a group
Box office
of Australia’s most exciting and
forward-thinking creative vocalists,
each one a leader and composer
in their own right, with stellar musicianship and expert craft. Invenio
creates an expansive, celestial
sound world that both unifies and
honours the individual characters
and voices, free of cliché and affectation, with a deep and natural
emotional immediacy.
Invenio released their debut
album ‘Gone, Without Saying’ in
2011 and have performed five major works by Slater, as well as collaborations with NY pianist composer,
Barney McAll and singer/songwriter,
Lior. They have performed at the
APRA awards, the Melbourne International Arts Festival, Wangaratta
Jazz Festival, Sydney Opera House
and The Myer Music Bowl.
Invenio have just released their
second album Clarion/Whisper and
are celebrating with a tour which
will take in Melbourne, Canberra,
Sydney, Albury, Lismore and Brisbane.
Since its inception in 2010,
Invenio has focused primarily on
wordless and extended vocal com-
positions, creating a world of vocal
sound that is rarely heard.
Clarion/Whisper explores text
and song form with an urgent, dynamic intensity that throws itself between minimalist unison and eightpart layered complexity; hushed
text and extended pop exultation;
clarion call and delicate whisper.
Clarion/Whisper premiered in
November 2012 at the Northcote
Town Hall, receiving a five-star review in The Age. For the hometown
Melbourne launch, Invenio will perform as the full 16-piece ensemble
and then tour as a condensed
10-piece.
Clarion/Whisper involved all 16
members of Invenio. It juxtaposed
lead singing with lyrics against wordless singing. Sections of the group
entered with different parts like the
sections of an orchestra.

Clooney fails at art of war

IT’S the war movie you watch
when you’re not watching a
war movie.
"The Monuments Men" is
what a war movie would look
like if war movies were made
for the fairer sex. Which is to
say, of course, that it’s not a
war movie at all.
I’m not sure war and art
have ever been a successful
cinematic combination before, but the tale takes us to
Nazi-occupied Europe, where
the retreating Germans are
variously stealing and de-
stroying the world’s art.
Enter the small, elite team
of aesthetes - a kind of "clean
half-dozen" led by screen veteran George Clooney with input from Matt Damon. Damon
is not well used, and doesn’t
get a lot of screen time.
Matters are complicated by
the Russians having a similar,
larger team, also involved in
the world’s largest treasure
hunt.
But the whole venture
seems somehow less contemporary than the re-telling of
300.
Bill Murray goes close to
stealing the show, however, as
a wise-cracking sergeant.
They’ve spent a bomb on
this, and it shows. It’s just not
terribly good.
Most of the problems
stem from George Clooney’s
direction, which is far from
taut. There’s a constant sense
that this film is struggling to
decide what kind of movie it
wants to be.
Most viewers will take no
violent objection to the film:
it’s not the kind of film you
can hugely object to.
The oldies will love the
nostalgia, and find it much
like slipping their foot into a
boot full of warm sago. For
the rest, there’s no rush - just
wait for the DVD.

Market to soldier on

WODONGA’S very first RSL
Community Market is on this
Saturday and, if successful, will
be on every second and fourth
weekend of the month.
“We just feel that Wodonga
needs something like this and
it will also put our name on the
map,” Wodonga RSL secretary
Jenny Bolt said.
“A lot of people in Wodonga
don’t even know we exist.
“The RSL is in Wodonga
and it’s not just for RSL people, it’s not just for serving or
ex-serving people, it’s for the
whole community. Anyone can
become a member of the RSL the more members we have, the
better it is.”
Ms Bolt said the market was
a two pronged fund-raiser, with
part of the money going towards
the refurbishment plan, which
is currently underway. The RSL
has recently introduced a new
chef, joker poker, regular meat
raffles and free entertainment.
“We’re raising money for the
welfare side of the club, which
is through the Hume Veterans
Information Centre, and also for
our building fund so we can better the facility and make it more
enjoyable for our veterans.
“We want to make it easier
for them to get around with
ramps and we want to put in
automatic sliding doors and that
sort of thing.”
Stallholders are booked
and include jewellery, building
items and trash and treasure,
with more stallholders still welcome.

INVESTING in property is often
seen as a positive move, which can
yield good returns.
Generally, these returns are
achieved over the mid to long term,
with a range of factors causing property to vary in value. And while the
local economy or changes in employment levels can cause prices
to increase or moderate, over time
these changes are smoothed by longer-term trends.
This has been shown in new
REIV data which has found that,
across regional Victoria, both homes
and units have shown solid capital
growth over the past five years.
The data showed that, as at December 2013, the median price of
a one-bedroom unit in regional
Victoria - a property type favoured
by many investors for buying to let
- showed an average annual capital
growth of 4.1 per cent over this period. For two-bedroom units the figure was 3 per cent and 2.1 per cent
for a three-bedroom unit.
The average annual capital
growth since 2008 for a two-bedroom house was 3.7 per cent. For a
three-bedroom house it was 3.5 per
cent and for a four-bedroom house it
was 3.6 per cent.
Our latest rental data was also
good news for investors with the
vacancy rate in regional Victoria
tightening slightly - to 2.6 per cent
in February, down from 2.7 per cent
in January.
This reflected vacancy falls in
most regions, except for the Shepparton and Goulburn region which
rose 0.8 per cent, and the Ballarat
region. The vacancy rate across the
Ballarat area rose 2.2 per cent in
February, after being the tightest
major rental market in regional Victoria over the previous two months.
Median house rents across regional Victoria remained stable in
February at $300 a week, while the
median rent for units fell by 4.0 per
cent over the month to $240 a week.
While this data shows that house
rents did not rise in comparison to
the previous month, and unit rentals
fell, a short-term dip in rental medians also needs to be considered
over a longer period. For instance,
house rentals rose two per cent (or
$6 a week) in the previous month
alone. What matters most is a property’s long-term performance, both
as an income stream and a source of
capital gain.

PEOPLE power is alive and well at
the Wodonga Squash Racquetball
Centre.
Three years ago when their centre closed its doors, members of the
local squash community decided
they didn’t want to be like so many
other towns and lose their facility
forever.
Once a staple in many major
towns around Australia, squash centre numbers are dwindling.
But instead of letting Wondonga
become another statistic the members banded together, contacting
the building owner and re-opening a
few months after the last lessee left.
The centre is now volunteer-run
according to one of the key volunteers, Mark Smith, and all money
generated goes straight back into the
facilities.
He said over the past three years
they had done everything from replacing backboards to completely
painting the place and now putting
major signage up to help attract
more members.
Mark said at the time of the closure there were 140-150 members
and although numbers dwindled,
things are now looking bright again.
“We now have 130-140 members
again,” he said, adding they were
hoping to attract more members to
the club and keep it going and growing.
The courts were first built in the
1970s and had been running almost
continuously since then. They have
just hosted a round of the Victorian
Masters Squash tournament for the
second year in a row and will now
host one every second year.
And despite being volunteer-run,
the centre is open from Monday to
Thursday nights for competition and
on Tuesday morning for a ‘hit and
giggle” social event for ladies.
They hold a junior event and
coaching on Saturday mornings and
are open to the public for games
from 4-7pm on Sundays.
The Wodonga Squash Racquetball centre is located at 29 Hovell
Street, Wodonga and Mark says new
members are welcome.

Ride for a good cause
BY the time you read this former Goulburn and Wagga Wagga
man Rafael McGowan will hopefully be closing in on the end of a
1900-kilometre bike ride.
Cycling to March has been a
journey over 24 days from Adelaide to Sydney (and due to end
in Sydney tomorrow), focusing on
melanoma awareness for young
Australians, raising money to find
a cure and celebrating the memory
of Rafael’s older sister Tess Bernadette McGowan Chan.
Tess was only 30 years young
when diagnosed with melanoma
and passed away 11 months later.
Tess always had courage and
the hope that melanoma could be
beaten.
On Saturday Rafael rode into
the Border areas with almost 30
local riders joining his ride to help
raise money for this worthy cause.
For local resident Lisa Barry
it was a chance to do something
in the memory of her own sister,
Evette Bone, who died last year
after a five-year battle with melanoma.
When the ride hit Albury, Rafael had raised $25,000 for research
- his ultimate goal is $100,000.
