The 3 P’s
Proper Planning and Preparation!!
Fire lighting is becoming more efficient and effective. Log cabin structure and tepee layouts are favoured to get a strong fire bed ready to cook on. Using just a basic fire steel
and birch bark, understanding the ‘Fire Triangle’, Tom and Ethan are more than capable
of getting a fire lit. They have learned the importance of getting tinder, kindling and fuel
prepared before putting a spark to the fire.
Do it wrong and the fire will go out.

Lyndon is attending DIY school during the week and has showed us his skills by
making a bird box for Woodbank Park. He has shown great improvement in attendance and skills whilst attending this course. We look forward to Lyndon carrying on
these skills and learning new ones after the Easter break.

We have had another successful term with our Form. Most of our students have had
a marked improvement in their attendance and attainment. Sonny, Lyndon and Carl
have worked hard to achieve their targets and are going to 'Bredbury Go Karting'
next week.
Our students are looking forward to accessing and attaining their " Food Hygiene Certificates" in the Summer Term and want to
teach Mr Webb how to cook properly!

As a reward for good attendance and a positive attitude, Ethan and his classmates
enjoyed a meal at Pizza Hut, Stockport.
Mr Law said he was proud of the progress his lads had made this half term, they
deserved a treat.
Forest School
Goodbye, Mr Peak.
Both teachers and students at ‘Forest School’ will miss Tom Peake. As the
youngest member of staff he was the one who could keep up the energy levels to track down the lads playing ‘Manhunt’. Marple Hall High School’s
gain is our loss.
Good luck, Mr Peake.
Eclipse of the Sun
Year 8 pupils used various techniques to see the eclipse safely, from lenses,
filters, pinhole cameras cereal box viewers. Still the best view came when
the clouds covered the sun so basic filters could be used.
A noticeable drop in temperature was detected as the moon covered the
sun and the sky dulled.
It will be over a decade until another eclipse will
happen in the UK.

Are Debbie’s dinners not enough??
Fish on Friday!!
The end of the week is spent out and about, often in Lyme Park or on the Middlewood
way.
Various foods are created and cooked each week. From hotdogs or fajitas cooked on a
camp stove to;
Campfire curries, (Created from scratch (no shop bought sauces allowed!!).

Crushed chillies

Cumin seed

Oil
fried off over a low flame
add

Onion - chopped – fried in the spices.

Add – your chopped meat and cook to seal it
One pack of curry spices – madras or jalfrezi to cover the onions and meat
Transfer to a stock pot and tip in

50 to 75 ml of water – stir
One can of chopped plum tomatoes
Add some extras – chick peas, sliced peppers or even beans. Coconut milk is nice too.
Allow heating up and simmering for at least 30 minutes over hot embers.
Tom, it’s not a helmet!

Stockport College
Over this term some of
our students have been
attending college courses
to try and improve skills
and to prepare them for
when they will leave
Windlehurst.
Brendon has been attending painting and decorating, Bricklaying and also
plastering course. Each
course has enabled Brendon to further his skills
and enabled him to apply
for college course which
he was accepted on. Go
Brendon.
Billy has been attending a
mechanic course throughout out this term and has
shown vast improvement
in his attendance and
punctuality. Billy has decided that the course is
good for him and has applied to attend the course
further in September. Billy
attended the interview
and was pleased to bring
an acceptance letter into
school. Billy looks forwards to September and
has produced a long list
for the course tutor, of all
of the practicals that he
wants to do and also what
he wishes to learn new on
the course.
Jake has been attending
college and has completed
the painting and decorating course and is now attending a plastering
course. We’ll look forward
to getting Jake onto a Engineering course after the
Easter break to improve
his skills and to further
educate him within this
sector.
Every day counts
This year we have celebrated good and improved attendance by rewarding pupils with a number
of exciting trips. At the end of the Autumn term, staff took a group of pupils to the National
Cycling Centre BMX cycle track in Manchester, as a reward for their good attendance. Boys on
the trip had a unique experience and thoroughly enjoyed the challenges. Well done to Ethan
Hardwick, Dylan Daniels, Ben Bateman, Jordan Walsh, Tom Piert, Rhyce Humphries, Austin Douglas and Jake Robinson.
In February this year staff took a group of pupils with good and improved attendance to Chill
Factor E near the Trafford Centre. Pupils and staff had fun on the slopes. Those involved were
Rhyce Humphries, Ben Bateman, Austin Douglas, Tom Piert, Ethan Hardwick, Jordan
Walsh, Reuben Coop, Michael Hill, Carl Parker, Lyndan Sutton and Sonny Clayton.
Our latest attendance reward trip saw yet again an encouraging number of pupils achieving good
or improved attendance. Staff were pleased to take Ethan Hardwick, Jordan Walsh, Austin
Douglas, Tom Piert, Layton Gleave and Kaiden Silverwood, for an afternoon of racing, showing off their skills at Bredbury karting.
Well done to all those who have achieved good and or have improved attendance this year so
far.

KS3 Pupil Room
At KS3, we have been looking at ways to improve and
use the Pupil Room more.
The pool table has been reclothed (many thanks to the
Evergreens) so we are having
daily challenges of “winner
stays on”. The class with the
highest average for each
week gets the use of the
room. We also have a table
tennis table, Xbox and cards.
The room is showing good
results in all areas, especially
teamwork and behaviour.
We are also proud to say
that Andy Law and Colin
Holmes have fixed all
onsite bikes and are
looking into weekly rides
with all students each
week.
Windlehurst at the Etihad Training Complex
The following students (Nyale
Flynn, Ayden Mitchellson,
Brendon Benson, Callum
Price, Carl Parker and Reuben
Coop) worked together well as
a team when competing in the
tournament. This was the first
time many of these students
have played together as a team
when representing our school.
They should all be very proud
of their performances. Special
mention should go to Brendon
Benson who was awarded a
prize of £25 worth of JD Gift
Vouchers for being selected as
the Windlehurst School Man
of the Match Award.
PE. Its more than just running around…...
Many of the students in Year
9 and 10 have now started
their GCSE PE course. As
well as being assessed on their
performances in different
sports, they will also have an
examination at the end of the
course.
To help the students to improve their literacy and remember their learing, we have
been getting creative with
playdoh! Most of the students
have made playdoh models of
the three main body parts
(somatotypes). Try asking
your son/daughter if they can
tell you what each of the fol-
lowing look like; ectomorph,
endomorph and mesomorph.

Portraits of world leaders.
A trilogy of war-time world leaders has appeared at the Stockport Centre site. John
Harley has produced three portraits using different influences in art. As part of his
GCSE John has been studying portraiture and has come up with this unusual
theme. The portraits show influences from pop art, impressionism and fauvism.
Churchill, Lenin and Mussolini are the subjects, can you match the styles?
PE. When you are running around…. You need to think.
The year 7 students have
been exploring and completing outdoor challenges
in many of their PE lessons. Recently they have
been using GPS units to
successfully navigate from
one point to another. This
is a new skill for many of
the students and is a good
introduction to understanding and reading maps.
Mask making Kple Kple style.
At our Hawk Green site,
year 7 and 8 pupils have
been developing their modelling skills by making African masks out of clay. The
pupils researched the Kple
Kple masks used by tribesmen in remote parts of
Africa. In Africa, the artist
who makes a mask is a
skilled professional and
held in high esteem and the
techniques they use can be
centuries old and require
specialised tools & local
materials. We used modelling skills and air-dry clay
to get a similar effect, usu-
ally Kple Kple masks are
carved from wood. This is
a skill that takes years to
master and we only had a
week.

KS4 new look
At our KS4 site, staff and students have been looking
at ways to help our school look more professional on
the outside. Students came up with the idea to do a
spot of gardening. We let the students have free rain
and plan and design the outside of the school. All staff
have to say that all students have done an excellent job
and we are looking into redesigning the garden at the
back of the school as the students’ next project.
