age appropriate literacy around the world.
To recognize the 50th anniversary of Cued Speech, the NCSA is asking for your support in sponsoring our 50th
Anniversary if Cued Speech Conference. This conference is designed for professionals providing services to children
and adults with hearing loss, families of children with hearing loss, and youth/adults with hearing loss and our goal is
200 attendees. The theme is “Cue It Forward” and emphasizes language and literacy development, addresses the
possibilities of using visual communication to provide clear access to spoken languages, and looks forward to the
future of Cued Speech.
It is with this in mind that we sincerely request a sponsorship from your corporation to support our conference. We
clearly understand that you receive many requests for sponsors of this kind; nevertheless we ask that you give our
request your utmost consideration.

WHAT IS CUED SPEECH?
Cued Speech was invented in 1966 by Dr. R. Orin Cornett, Vice President of Long-Range Planning at Gallaudet
University, to increase the literacy levels of the deaf and hard of hearing. His goal was to develop a way for
deaf children to clearly access the properties of spoken language through vision.
The resulting visual communication system allows users who are deaf, hard of hearing or those who have language / communication disorders to access the basic, fundamental properties of spoken languages through their sight. Relatively easy to learn, Cued
Speech consists of eight hand shapes that represent groups of consonant phonemes and four hand placements that represent
groups of vowel phonemes, which are combined with mouth shapes to emulate the linguistic code of spoken language in a way
that can be processed in the same way people with hearing comprehend speech in real time and with accuracy.
Deaf Cuers…
•
•
•
•
Learn English naturally
Have a large vocabulary base
Learn to read in the same manner as hearing children
Learn foreign languages as easily as hearing children
Cuers meet or surpass hearing peers in linguistic competence.
Research has shown that individuals who cue typically reach their maximum literacy potential and often perform at or above
grade level in language and reading testing. A result of increased access to the native spoken languages in one study showed
that increased literacy rates among native cuers were comparable to that of their hearing peers. In addition, there were
benefits for speechreading, speech discrimination, and speech articulation.
We believe the benefits that are generated by such a profound window of visual access to spoken language to be used in
conjunction with auditory feedback falls under the mission and core values of your organization. It is with that in mind that we
sincerely request a donation from your corporation to support our initiatives.

WHAT DO WE DO?
We are a member-driven organization that services the deaf and hard of hearing community by facilitating advocacy
initiatives, training workshops, and raising awareness of the literacy issues in deaf education.
There are at least 5,000 Cued Speech users in the United States and the NCSA serves this community.

The scholarship fund was created to honor Dr. Cornett’s dedication to improving access to communication, language and literacy for
children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Many cuers go on to pursue post-secondary education and the NCSA supports them in
achieving their goals. Recipients of the awards must have used Cued Speech as their primary mode of communication during their
crucial language learning years or for five or more years of their education and be entering or attending an undergraduate, graduate, or
vocational institute for the upcoming school year.

There is a critical national shortage of certified Cued Speech instructors. Providing
these required workshops & exams, regardless of number of attendees, enables these
individuals to complete an essential requirement for certification without the undue
financial burden of traveling to an out-of-state location.
An Introduction to Cued American English - This workshop provides
participants with the basic information needed to apply the system of Cued
Speech to American English and introduces them to the history, rationale,
research, and therapy uses.
Basic Instructor Workshop (BIWS) - Required for Certification. A 2-day
intensive workshop designed to ensure that all instructors are exposed to
the NCSA’s current policy on cueing and cueing mechanics standards.
The ICS-National Certification Exam - A full battery of tests including a
written test and an Assessing Cue Errors (ACE) test.
Cued sPeeCh CamPs/workshoPs
These weekend learning vacations provide Cued Speech instruction for parents, transliterators, and professionals as well as deaf
children who attend. Instructors must be NCSA certified. Native cuers attend and are role models for the families and their
children. These workshops are held in a retreat environment where Cued Speech instruction is provided for parents,
transliterators, and professionals as well as deaf children who attend.
