As I write this, I’m learning
French from many of our Canadian members at the Passion
Couleurs show in Quebec. I’m

Society chapters make their mark
A B EGGCELLENT—Bunnies and chicks were popular motifs when the Toll Bridge Tolers of Corncord, Calif., created darling eggs for their annual Easter egg exchange in April.
C PAINTING MEMORIES—Members of the Alamo
Decorative Artists in San Antonio, Texas, have been busy all year
long, painting memory boxes in many designs. The boxes are
being given to various local and military hospitals in the San
Antonio area. Chapter members pictured with their memory

D HAPPY BIRTHDAY!—The Southern Gardenia Tolers
chapter of Lafayette, La., celebrated its first anniversary this
summer, complete with a cake decorated with an image of the

E F SWEET PAINTERS—The room was full of
young smiles when the Painter’s Club Yume Palette of Gifu,
Japan, taught a decorative painting class for children. The
junior artists painted boxes to look like cakes and decorated
them with painted fruit and flowers that they made of clay.
G LEARNING FUN—Community members of all ages
in Palm Coast, Fla., enjoyed a fun learning experience when the
Palm Coast Decorative Painters hosted its annual Learn to Paint
event Sept. 30 at the local library.
H GENEROUS GIVING—Martinsburg, West Virginia’s
Panhandle Painters presented memory boxes to the bereavement program of City Hospital’s Birthing Center. Members present were Mary Dunlap, Charlotte Childress, Shirlie Bonifant,
founder Mary Frazee and Mary Jane Melaugh.
I J SYMPHONY SHOWHOUSE—Forty-three
members of Penn’s Woods Painters dedicated their time and
talents to the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra fundraising
Symphony House this year. The decorative painting aspects of
the project involved three months of planning and two months
of working onsite, with the artists working morning and
evening shifts, six days a week. The painters created two
rooms. The Garden Room included murals on all four walls, featuring a peacock by Debra Kreiger CDA, a waterfall and pond, a
view of the river, an arbor, trees and flowers, picket fence and
wildlife. The living room was transformed into an old-world
showcase featuring a mural painted by Dee DeLorenzo that
depicted the house and gardens overlooking the Susquehanna
River. A quote over the fireplace done in calligraphy by Carol
Payne tied the two rooms together. Examples of faux finishes
included a built-in cabinet painted by Nancy and Megan
Capuano, marbled fireplace mantle painted by Darlene Ferrier
and molding painted by Tracy Ludwig and Linda Fromm. A
large medallion surrounding the grand chandelier was painted
by Lina Ferrara CDA. The planners of the event were so
impressed that they asked the chapter to participate in the
next Symphony House in 2009. Interested in doing a similar

News from the SDP office
Seeking Learn to Paint Projects
Attention painters! SDP is seeking projects for the 2007–08
Learn to Paint program. The program will include a
watercolor project, an acrylic project and an oils project. All members are invited to submit a project in
any one of the three media. Here are the rules:
■ Your project should use four to six colors of paint.
■ It must be designed for people who have never
painted before.
■ It must require the use of a paintbrush, but no more
than two paintbrushes.
■ It must be able to be modified so it can be painted on whatever
surface a teacher, chapter or individual chooses.
■ Your project must be painted on watercolor paper or bristol
board and can be no larger that 8-by-10 inches. In addition to your
final piece, you must include:
■ A project pattern
■ A step-by-step painted worksheet
■ Written instructions
One project from each of the three categories will be chosen for
the 2007 Learn to Paint program. Each winning artist will receive
the title of “Learn to Paint Artist” and recognition in The Decorative Painter magazine. Send submissions, postmarked by Feb.
15, 2007, to SDP, attn. Learn to Paint, 393 N. McLean Blvd.,
Wichita, KS 67203-5968.
Apply for an SDP Scholarship
There are so many ways you or your chapter could use an SDP
Scholarship: to help fund a chapter field trip, to hone your skills
for Certification, to help teach painting to underprivileged people
in your community or to even help you study abroad! Applications for SDP Scholarships are being taken now. There are three
categories: Individual, Chapter and Community Outreach. The
program is open to all SDP members and affiliated chapters in
good standing. An application fee is required. Call Sara Perkins at

complete guidelines and an application. The postmark deadline
for applications is March 15. More information will be posted at

Opening the Door
pen doors. We all look for “the door,” and
when the Society offered the Teacher
Development Program (TDP) to improve
teaching skills, I found myself sitting in the
introductory workshop. Being chapter president, I was to pick a class at the SDP Conference that our chapter would pay for and would
be of the most benefit to the chapter. I chose
the TDP class, knowing the manual would
become a part of out chapter library. Returning
home from Conference, I immediately studied
the manual and took the openbook test.
It was well over a year after passing the written test that friends and
Gateway Decorative Artists chapter members Gloria Falk TDA and
Janie Parisi TDA called to say they
had set up Gloria’s home studio to
tape their videos. An invitation to
come up the next week and tape
my video was given. Filled with
excitement, I made the 100-mile
journey to St. Louis. The encouragement and support of Gloria,
Janie and Mary Jo Kumer was
invaluable. You may be interested in knowing
that Gloria and Janie also passed and we all
proudly sign our work “TDA.”
I cannot express the thrill when the envelope arrived with the address reading: Vada
Galvan TDA. I knew without reading the letter
that I had passed!
Academy Award? They can keep them.
Wait until your name is called at the SDP
Annual Meeting and you are pinned with a
peach-colored rosette emblazoned with a gold
TDA and the Society logo.
The Teacher Development Program has
made me a much more aware teacher. I have a
better understanding of my students and their
needs. Looking for the reasons students come
to class and endeavoring to help them learn a
skill has increased my class base. In order to
have time to spend with each student, it

class every week.
I would like to encourage every teacher in
the Society to explore becoming a better
instructor, a more understanding teacher and a
more confident person. It will be through us
that the Society grows and the next generation keeps the decorative arts alive and well.
The Teacher Development Program gives us a
starting point to reach for excellence in teaching and ensures the continued growth of this
historic art form.

The Education Committee would like to introduce you to Vada Galvan TDA. Although a decorative painter for more than 30 years, Vada did
not find her chapter “family” until 1995 when she
joined the Gateway Decorative Artists of St.
Louis.
During Vada’s years with the chapter, she has
regularly made the 200-mile round trip to be an
active member, serving as vice president, president
and on a variety of committees. Vada also teaches
three weekly classes at The Red Rooster, a local
shop in Farmington, Mo.
Since achieving her TDA certification in 2003,
Vada has painted commissioned pieces for the Decorative Arts Collection, served on the SDP Chapters Committee and has had an ornament with her
design displayed on the Library of Congress
Christmas tree. Vada can also count among her
achievements winning first place in the 2004 Delta
Painters Challenge with her tropical “black tie”
parrots design.
She and her husband, Ben, reside in Farmington, Mo., and have two grown children and three
grandsons.

Awards for Dedication
ach year, the SDP Awards Committee
chooses a few of the many members who
have made outstanding contributions to SDP
and the industry. Here are the 2006 honorees:

Brenda Stewart—Silver Palette
Known for her fierce loyalty and strength of
character, Brenda Stewart CDA, TDA is a natural
choice, according to Mary Wiseman.
An advocate for teachers, Brenda herself has
taught at SDP Conference (and with her husband, Robert, exhibited at every Conference
since 1980), Tole Country, HOOT, Kaswood,
NET and MAD. An SDP member for 29 years,
she began conducting teacher training seminars
in 1986 and achieved her Teacher of Decorative
Arts certification in 2001. She has been a CDA
since 1979 and has served SDP as Board Member-at-Large, Vice President/President Elect,
President and Past President. Brenda is looking
forward to beginning a teaching program in Taiwan this year.
Wymar and Pat Cooper—
President’s Commendation
Beloved business members Wymar and Pat
Cooper have become a fixture at SDP Conference, always offering smiles and kind words from
their booth, Coopers’ Works.
Ann Johnson asked a number of people what
came to mind when she mentioned the couple.
“The responses were: ‘dedicated,’ ‘unassuming,’
‘down-to-earth,’ ‘willing to let others take the
glory,’ ‘sweet’ and ‘always willing to take the time
to talk to you’,” says Johnson.
SDP business members for 20 years, the
Coopers have exhibited at Conference every
year since they joined the organization in 1986.
The Coopers announced in Nashville that due
to health concerns and a need for relaxation,
2006 would mark their last SDP Conference.
Louise Jackson—Dedicated Service
A popular artist admired for her paintings,
Louise Jackson MDA, TDA is also a dedicated
ambassador of SDP and the industry. Generous
with her knowledge and ability, Louise has
donated many artworks to charity and fundrais-
ers, as well as her time as a member of the Teachers, Awards and Nomination committees.
“She takes responsibility for any job she does
to its completion,” says Janice Baier. “She is
dependable in all ways. She has supported SDP
in every way possible.”
A member of several SDP chapters, Louise
became an MDA in 1991. Her work is included
in the DAC, a number of corporate collections
and the Smithsonian Institution. She continues
to take seminars with other artists in order to
expand her own knowledge.
Nancy Genetti—Outstanding Chapter Service
Serving in every role imaginable, Nancy
Genetti has generously given 24 years of dedicated service to the Yellow Rose Chapter in
Texas. Nancy has actively participated in every
service project and charitable program her chapter has undertaken and is quick to go the extra
mile—offering accommodations for travel-teachers or hosting a tea for new members.
“Although actually somewhat reserved, often
times it is Nancy sitting beside a visitor, whispering warm words of encouragement,” says Susan
Mynyk TDA. “She is a backbone for the longevity
of our chapter.”
A teacher, Nancy has also served SDP as a
board member-at-large.

An SDP business member since 1979, Stan
Brown has earned a positive reputation for being
a constant promoter of SDP and the industry.
Whenever asked to help SDP, Stan’s answer has
always been “yes,” leading him to participate in a
number of ways, including as a member of the
Business Committee and Exhibitors’ Panel.
Stan will retire from his business in December. Stan Brown’s Arts & Crafts has been a mainstay of the industry for decades, and a new
company called Viking/Stan Brown will offer his
products. Stan looks forward to helping his wife,
artist Susan Scheewe, with her business. Congratulations, Stan, on your retirement! y
