HOW TO ENTER
TIMING and RULES
All registered participants in the event will be recorded by the electronic
timing system on crossing the finish line. A disposable timing chip is
attached to the back of the race bib. Do not remove or peel the plastic
timing device from the race bib. Attach the race bib to the front of the body
only, by pinning the bib in the holes at the four corners. Please make sure
that the race bib is kept flat and not folded or crumpled. The race bib is
allocated to the person nominated on the entry form and is nontransferable to another person.
LOSS OF THE RACE BIB OR LEFT HOME ON THE DAY, WILL RESULT IN A
$5.00 SURCHARGE TO HAVE ANOTHER RACE BIB ISSUED.
WAMC events are generally conducted under IAAF rules and due to some
recent incidents two rules in particular need to be highlighted. First,
participants must only take drinks from the nominated drink station
locations. Second, participants must not be paced (or accompanied) by
non-participants either on foot or on bicycles. Breaches of any of these
rules may lead to disqualification.

and those accompanying them.
FROM PERTH &
FREMANTLE:
ROTTNEST MARATHON
VENI VIDI VICI – “I came, I saw, I conquered”
The inaugural Rottnest Marathon was run in October 1994. In that year 72
runners completed the scenic undulating island course and a plaque with
the names of those finishers has been placed in the Rottnest Hotel. Ray
Brown took out the men’s race in a time of 2.35.50 and visiting New
Zealand runner Nyla Carroll took the women’s title in 2.52.20.
Rottnest Express is
offering 25% off same day
return and extended return ferry fare (excluding the Government landing
fee) and $10.00 bike hire for online bookings only. To obtain this exclusive
discount, please visit www.rottnestexpress.com.au and enter promotion
code “BROOKS2014”.
For further Rottnest Express ferry details, please call 1300 467 688.
The race has established its own bit of mythology. The legend has it that
Harry McFordyce, an immigrant prisoner on Rottnest Island some 70 years
ago escaped the hands of justice and attempted to run off the island. On
the fourth leg around the island McFordyce succumbed to dehydration and
died. If you run the marathon you will see and hear the ghost of Harry
playing his bagpipes throughout the race. On the last lap at the foot of
Harry’s Hill you will be given a gold coin, which you must carry up the hill
and deposit, in Harry’s bag. Legend says failure to do this will result in
cramps, dehydration and a possible DNF imposed on you by the ghost of
Harry.
FROM HILLARYS:
The marathon is symbolized by its motto “Veni Vidi Vici” and its logo, a
quokka (a rat like animal native to the island). The quokka that has
survived throughout time reflects that this marathon will also survive
because it is a marathon designed to meet the needs of all runners,
regardless of talent, speed or size.
Rottnest Fast Ferries is offering 25% off same
day and extended return ferry transfers for
adult fares (excluding the Government landing
fee). To obtain this discount please visit
www.rottnestfastferries.com.au to book online,
or call us on 08 9246 1039 and quote
“BROOKS2014”. $10 bike hire can also be
added to your booking over the phone or on the
day.
DRINK STATIONS
Five drink stations on the course, located at approx 2km intervals, will be
manned by volunteer army cadets, who will issue you with water. For the
marathon, electrolyte drink will be available at approx 5k intervals.
For the marathon:
Drink Stn. No.1 (approx 6k, 15k, 25k, 34k)
Drink Stn. No.2 (approx 7k, 17k, 26k, 36k)
Drink Stn. No.3 (approx 9k, 19k, 28k, 38k)
Drink Stn. No.4 (approx 11k, 21k, 30k, 40k)
Drink Stn. No.5 (approx 13k, 23k, 32k)
Special drinks must be handed into Unit 349 (adjacent to Heritage
Common) by 6.00pm on SATURDAY. Drinks must clearly identify your Bib
No. and the drink station it is to be placed at. These drinks will be placed
on a separate table and it will be up to the participants to retrieve their own
drink. Alternatively, participants may have their supporters hand them
special drinks at the drink station locations so long as there is no
interference with the operation of the drink station or with other participants
trying to get their own special drinks.
Thirst is a poor indicator of fluid replacement needs, drink regularly and
before you become thirsty. Even if the day is cool, the wind can dehydrate
you by as much as 25%. Continue to drink after the run to replace the fluid
loss.
HEALTH ADVICE
∗ The race organisers recommend that the marathon be attempted only
after a period of regular running, culminated by about three months of
training directed towards the marathon. This should include some long
distances and perhaps some shorter races.
∗ Prior to the day ensure you are adequately hydrated (your urine should
by clear). On the day of the race, continue to take on fluids before, during
and after the race. Weigh yourself before a long training run and then
again after, the difference in weight is the amount of fluid you have lost
(1kg = 1 litre). This helps to determine how much you need to drink during
the event.
∗ Do not wear new shoes or clothes, as they will tend to cause blisters
and chaffing.
∗ If you have been unwell in the 48 hours prior to the event or if you are
recovering from a viral infection, do not attempt to run. You must retire if
you feel distressed, disorientated, or are asked to do so by an official.
∗ The race organisers recommend you seek medical advice to ensure
that you are fit to compete in any such event and that this advice is
obtained regularly and with the specific demands of the event in mind. If
you answer YES to any of the following questions we strongly suggest that
you seek medical approval prior to running the marathon:
1. Do you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure,
diabetes or asthma?
2. Do you smoke?
3. Are you 15% over your ideal weight for height?
4. Have you been running for less than 1 year and are aged 35
years or over?
The race organisers can provide a list of doctors who are able to confirm
the participant's fitness to compete in the event.
Drink Stations
.
The Fun Run has an initial 0.5km lap between the Lodge and Hotel and then the 10k event follows a lap of the marathon course
(9.5km). The 5km event has a turn point at the 2.75km mark to return to the finish on the Heritage Common.
The Rottnest Marathon consists of four (4) laps. The first lap is 13.7km and includes a loop out past Kingstown Barracks with
the following three (3) laps, excluding the Kingstown loop, being approx. 9.5km each, with the finish on Heritage Common.
