James Francis Cardinal McIntyre
Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family...
Fourth Sunday of Advent: The Gospel today tells of the Virgin Mary, pregnant herself,
hurrying off to help her cousin Elizabeth. The model of good stewardship, she who had given herself to
bear the Savior gave her time and love to others as well.
Dear parishioners,
"Glory to God in the highest"
In this year of faith, the song of the angels can perhaps open a new door of
perspective for us. While the Birth in Bethlehem was seemingly not all that
extraordinary, it was the message of the Angels that awakened in the shepherds a desire to
"go and see", to "find out" , to "ponder the mystery". It was the overwhelmingly joyful
announcement that stirred their hearts and minds.
To grow as a people of faith, we must be centered always on the announcement, on the
message. In examining more closely the word, our faith is inspired, it awakens, it sees
things anew and differently, it brings a change in perspective. Our faith becomes
perfected.
It is precisely in such an endeavor that we are caught up in the glory of God and encounter
the grace of salvation. It leaves us no choice but to take up the mission of proclaiming the
message in an everyday change of heart because God loves us with an infinite love.
The message of Bethlehem is the message of faith! Merry Christmas!

Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family...
Reflection on Today’s Readings:
Focus: The New Covenant lives on in us. Mary responded yes to the request of God to bear His Son. Jesus responded
yes to the will of the Father and gave His life for the sake of humankind. We, too, are invited to be part of the New
Covenant that Jesus established. We say yes when we act out of love toward those around us and reach out to those in
need throughout the world.
Liturgy of the Word: The prophet Micah declares that a new leader for Israel will come from Bethlehem and will rule
in the name of the Lord. In the Gospel, Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, names Mary the mother of the Lord. In
Hebrews, we hear that Jesus, by His obedience to God the Father, is the one sacrifice of the New Covenant that
sanctifies us.

Will break the captive fetters,

Ministry in Community …
3 Ways to Celebrate Mass More Fully
Central to our Catholic faith is the liturgy - the Mass and sacraments. It is here that we are formed in the Christian
life. Throughout this Year of Faith, participating fully at Mass helps us grow in faith and nourishes a strong belief in
God.
Arrive at Mass a few minutes early and spend time in silent prayer, opening your heart to God.
 Christ is really and truly present in several aspects of the Mass. He is present in the Presider, in the Word that is
read from the Sacred Scriptures, and in the community gathered as Christ’s body. He is present most fully in the Holy
Eucharist. Really greet Jesus in all aspects of Mass.
 Sit in a different section of the Church each week and notice how this gives you a unique perspective of the Mass.
Greet the new faces around you. If a family with young children is sitting near you, welcome and praise them for
their presence. 
Safety tips for parents traveling with
children - Traveling with kids during the
holidays can be a challenge, especially with the
added worry of safety thrown into the mix. Here
are some suggestions parents can use to help
ensure their children’s safety while traveling:
1. Prior to leaving on your holiday, remind children about
your family safety procedures for dealing with strangers
and what to do if they get lost.
2. Keep a recent photo of children handy, also a
photocopy of passports kept in a safe place or with a
relative that can fax it to you in case of loss.
3. If you label children’s clothing, make sure the label is
inside so strangers are not able to learn child’s name.
For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at

FACT OF LIFE
100 Newborns Saved By Safe Surrender Program
Families, firefighters and hospital staff joined Los Angeles
County Supervisor Don Knabe at Grand Park [November 27]
for a ceremonial candle lighting to honor the 100 newborns
who were given a chance at a happy and healthy life thanks to
the Safe Surrender program. “In 2001, the Safe Surrender
program began in Los Angeles County. Eleven years later, I am
so proud that 100 infants have been saved and new families
have been created,” said Supervisor Knabe. “While it is
difficult to ‘celebrate’ a baby being given up, when we consider
what the alternative could have been, we recognize the
courage it took for a mother, who found herself in a desperate
situation, to make a better choice for her child.” . . . “This
year alone, 11 newborns have been given a second chance at
life and hope for a bright future because of the Safe Surrender
program,” said Supervisor Knabe. “As word spreads about the
program, mothers in desperate situations can make the right
choice for their babies because of Safe Surrender.” . . .
Established in 2001, the Safe Surrender program allows a
parent or legal guardian to confidentially hand over an infant,
three days old or younger, to any hospital emergency room,
fire station or other designated Safe Surrender site, as long as
the baby has not been abused or neglected. As of November
28, 100 newborns have been safely surrendered.

Living Faith for Kids
Rouse your power,
And come to save us.
Psalm 80:3
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Without power, a savior could not do much help. And
we need help. We need help to deal with sin and the
fear and shame that comes with it. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ can help us overcome those things and
become the people God wants to be.
Do you want that help? Advent is a good time to see
how much we need a savior and how much we want
help.
Parish Ball and Silent Auction
The
will be
held on March 9, 2013 at the Westin Hotel
