What is VolunTEENS?
VolunTEENS is a year-round volunteer program designed for middle and high
school students who want to help in their communities by volunteering.
The VolunTEENS Program can…
• Give you work experience for job applications.
• Help you stand out on college and scholarship applications.
• Fulfill school or other service requirements.
• Allow you to help others.
• Help you explore future careers while learning new skills.
• Expose you to new people and experiences.
• Be Fun!
Getting Started:
Follow the steps below and you’ll be on your way!
1. Read the information here and talk with your parents or guardians about your interest in volunteering.
2. Decide how many hours you can commit to volunteering and talk about how you’ll get to your volunteer job(s). Make
sure you have transportation before you sign up for the VolunTEENS Program. Opportunities that are on or near the bus
line are marked with 
3. Opportunities are filled on a first come, first served basis so sign up early to have the best chance of getting the job(s)
that you want.

Next Steps:
5. To sign up for volunteer opportunities on the website, visit www.volunteerkalamazoo.org and click on “Get Involved.” All
opportunities will require that you have a volunteer account created with Volunteer Kalamazoo in order to register. Search
for the opportunity of your choice by keyword (title of the opportunity) or by organization. You can then click ‘Express
Interest’ to sign up for that opportunity.
6. Once you register for the opportunity of your choice, you will receive a confirmation email with contact information for
the opportunity coordinator. Expect to be contacted by the organization(s) within 2-3 weeks, sometimes longer depending
upon the needs of the organization(s).
7. Remember that there may be other requirements before beginning your volunteer job, such as an application, interview,
background check and/or training.
8. Use the Student Activity Report (or other school form, if applicable) to record and verify your hours and submit them to
Volunteer Kalamazoo (available online). We will track them in our database, to be retrieved when needed for college,
scholarship or Michigan Student Service Award applications.

10. Contact the organization hosting the opportunity you signed up for directly if you do not hear from them within 2-3

What is the Michigan Student Service Award?
Sponsored by the Volunteer Centers of Michigan, the Michigan Student Service Award (MSSA) is a premier statewide
program that recognizes high school graduates who volunteer and document 400 hours of non-paid community service
that meet a recognized community need, under the auspices of a nonprofit organization, government program, community
group or school. Each student that fulfills the program requirements during the course of their high school career
receives: a Michigan Student Service Award Medallion of Distinction, a Certificate of Distinction for commitment to service
from Volunteer Kalamazoo and Volunteer Centers of Michigan that is signed by the Governor, and inclusion in
community-wide recognition efforts in the media and on Volunteer Kalamazoo’s website.

Cat and Dog Caregivers  Volunteers needed to work with cats and/or dogs. We have a variety of tasks and will
work with each volunteer to ensure that they are assigned to something they enjoy. Our large facility in the country houses
kennels, a dog park, cat quarters and a water sport area for dogs with a waterfall. Must be able to pay attention and follow
directions, good work habits, be punctual, reliable and dress appropriately for work. Must have transportation to Allegan.

General Maintenance Site Worker  Great for groups or mentor/mentee pairs! Fulfill your service requirements!

Relay For Life Volunteer  Relay is a fun-filled overnight event to celebrate survivorship and raise money for
research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools and take
turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. For those who
are cancer survivors, a dinner will be held in your honor at the event. Location: Various sites. Hours: Date TBD, various

First Aid,CPR, and/or Babysitting Instructor Help save a life by empowering others with important skills and knowledge!
This position is responsible for conducting Health and Safety courses at the chapter as well as in workplaces, schools,
and other community settings. Specific duties include: teaching classes as available, evaluate student progress, distribute

General Volunteers The Kalamazoo Chapter of the American Red Cross welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds. We
provide various opportunities to participate in blood drives, teach health & safety classes to the community, assist those
affected by house fires or other disasters, equipment maintenance and contribute to the everyday functioning of the

Community Disaster Education Presenter Help educate community organizations and agencies to prevent, prepare for,
and respond to emergencies. Partner with us in educating our youth to be disaster-ready! Specific duties include:

Kalamazoo Arthritis Walk Volunteer Various volunteer positions available on a first-come, first-serve basis to anyone
age 13 or older. Course Marshals are stationed on the walk course to point participants in the correct direction. Water
Stop volunteers are stationed at the 1/2-way mark of the course, Food & Beverage Servers help with the light lunch,

Summer Serves Youth Volunteers Summer Serves is a group program for youth 14 and older. Youth volunteers
participate on Tuesday and Thursday from 1pm-3pm. Tuesdays activities include group recreation activities with our
nursing home patients. Thursday activities involve learning about various careers from medical center staff and they
escort nursing home patients to the canteen (which is our on-station store). Minimum age: 14
Pet Therapy Volunteer We welcome canine pet therapy animals and their handlers to give back to our Veterans by
providing pet therapy on assigned ward and days arranged through our Recreation Therapy Department. Animal must
have current shot records and evaluation by a Veterinarian. Handler and pet must meet with Recreation Therapy staff to

New Year's Celebration Ring in the New Year by volunteering for the Battle Creek VA Medical Center New Year's Eve

Party on December 31 2012. Celebrate with Veterans and help make the party a time to remember. We will have music,
Wii games, and other activities for the Veterans. We need approximately 20 volunteers from 5pm-9pm to help with games,
serve food, and escort patients from their wards. This is located in BLDG 6 Auditorium. Please call to reserve your spot to
help with this event.
Homeless Veteran Program Volunteer Volunteers will assist staff in providing services to Veterans transitioning from
homelessness. Based on the skills of the volunteer, services include peer support counseling, assisting staff with
distribution of materials at stand downs, organization and distribution of comfort items, and other areas needed to support
staff. Minimum age: 18, or 14 with adult
Clerical Volunteers We can utilize your clerical skills to assist staff at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek. We need
support in the Clinical Health Service, Women Veterans Program, and Community and Volunteer Service. Minimum age:

Baker Guest Service Volunteer Serve Veterans with your baking and customer service skills. Bake cookies, breads and
other items for distribution to our patients in our Community Living Center (nursing home) or inpatient psychiatric units.
Greet and visit with patients while performing these tasks. Other guest service duties such as assisting with laundry (on a
emergency basis) may needed at times. Minimum age: 14
Various Opportunities  Come help Serve Veterans! The Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS)
Program is the largest volunteer program in the Federal government. Our mission is to enhance the Veterans' healthcare
experience through utilization of volunteers and donations. The generosity of the volunteer's time allows us to provide
many opportunities and experiences for our Veterans that otherwise could not be accomplished by the staff. We welcome
individuals of all backgrounds and abilities. Opportunities include music therapy, assisting with recreation events and trips,
pet therapy, visitations, clerical support and many others. If you have a skill or interest and want to help our Veterans,
please contact us. Because of the nature of care being delivered at our VA hospitals, all volunteers are screened and
individually matched to their assignments. VAVS offers volunteer assignments that fulfill the volunteer's desire to make a
difference in a Veteran's life. The VAVS program can be tailored to meet the volunteer needs of an individual, student,
family, large group, or corporation. There are opportunities to volunteer at the Fort Custer National Cemetery, The
Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Lansing, Benton Harbor, Grand Rapids, and Muskegon as well as the Battle

Music Volunteers  Show your support for Veterans by providing music at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek.
Just a short drive from Kalamazoo, we are looking for people to share their musical talent. If you play piano or another
instrument or if you want to bring a group or band. We are looking for people to provide music during dinner and lunch in
our patient dining room. We can also arrange for group performances in a larger setting. Minimum age: 18, or 14 with

Activity Assistant for Extended Care Veterans  We are looking for volunteers to assist with activities in our extended
care dementia ward and extended care mental health wards during the afternoon hours between 2pm-4pm. Play games,
cards and visit with patients in the ward dayrooms or in the patient rooms on the assigned wards. We find that activities

Bigs In Schools Volunteer Meet for one hour weekly with an assigned child at a designated school for fun and
development of a friendly relationship. Days and times available vary according to school. Volunteers must be willing to

Teen Zoo Volunteers Volunteering to be a part of Binder Park Zoo's Teen Program is a fun and rewarding way to spend
your summer. This year teens will choose to be either a JUNIOR ZOO KEEPER (working with animal care) or a TEEN
EDUCATOR (working with education). There are many exciting opportunities regardless of which program you apply for.
Participants must pay a small fee and be able to commit to volunteer 50 hours over the summer. A zoo shirt and name tag
is provided for all participants. A completed application must be submitted with essay questions completed and two letters

Holiday Decorator  Do you love decorating for the holidays? How would you like to decorate the dining area at our

Adopt Library Lane in Portage  This is an excellent opportunity for up to 10 groups of 8-10 people to adopt the beds
and planters in Portage along Library Lane and City Hall during the summer. Responsibilities include weeding and
watering the beds and planters and clearing any debris. Caring for the plants, especially watering them, is a key volunteer
need. Group bed adopter names will appear in a sign planted along Library Lane. Library Lane and City Hall along
Westnedge will need to be cared for 4 times/week after planting day (late May) until plant pulling day (early October).
This is an excellent opportunity for up to 10 groups of 8-10 people to adopt the beds and planters in Portage along Library
Lane and City Hall during the summer. Groups of 8-10 people can expect to spend 6 hours if they care for both Library
Lane and City Hall flowers. If more groups volunteer to adopt flowers, then each can choose to concentrate on Library
Lane or City Hall and still come on their designated day. It is recommended to come in the morning before it gets too hot.
Adopt-a-Bed in Bronson Park  Adopt a bed in Bronson Park and commit to care for it during the summer. This
includes wedding the bed and clearing any litter. As a bed adopter, your name will appear in the sign planted in your bed.
There is an orientation in the Spring (date to be determined) in which bed adopters will receive additional information, a
volunteer shirt, and a parking pass to use when caring for the bed. Bed adopters should come in pairs for safety and
wear their Kalamazoo In Bloom volunteer shirt. They must be able to get down on the ground to pull weeds. You can use
a trowel to loosen the weed, an edger to keep a straight line around the bed and a broom to push back any dirt from the
sidewalk into the bed. Place weeds in a bag and discard in trash containers found in the park. Hours: One day/week for
approximately an hour from late May to late September. Volunteers can set their own hours/days but it's recommended to
tend the bed in the morning before it gets too hot. Minimum age: 18, or younger with adult

Tower Runners  Tower runners, ages 12-19, work 4-hour shifts at Kalamazoo College's Stowe Stadium during the

Explore Glass Art Day (Apr, May, Oct, Nov); annual Public art project in the community (summer); Summer Glass Camp
for KIDS. Assistance needed includes help with registration, general errands and go-getters. Party planning and cookie
baking is also needed for events and volunteer recognition. Hours: Vary depending on organizational needs and special

WMU Homecoming Campus Classic

WMU Homecoming Campus Classic Race Volunteers  The Homecoming Campus Classic, a 5K run, 5K and 1K fun
walk/run, attracts more than 1500 participants and is one of WMU's most popular homecoming activities. More than 250
volunteers are needed for this event. Volunteers are needed to work as course marshals, finish line reporters, logistics
team, registration assistants or first aid tent. ;<a href="http://www.wmich.edu/race/volunteering/" target="_blank"> If you
want to volunteer for Saturday's Campus Classic, please come to the WMU Bernhard Center Cafeteria (ground floor off
W. Michigan entrance), at 7:45 a.m. and sign up in person. A community service letter will be sent if requested. The
event will end between 11:15 and 11:30. Hours: Saturday of WMU’s Homecoming weekend[6-11am], various shifts

Miscellaneous Volunteer Project Assistant  Assist in various projects and/or programs at the Visitor Center including
but not limited to: nature and special program assistance, critter care, trail maintenance, front desk reception, pond
maintenance, housekeeping/cleaning and other. Hours: Vary, Tue-Sat. Minimum age: 16, or 15 with adult
Fishing Program Assistant  Assist with children's catch and release fishing program delivery. Basic fishing knowledge
is mandatory. Volunteers will need to be able to instruct individuals on casting techniques, tie knots, line fishing poles and
release fish from the hook. All equipment is provided. Volunteers are also needed during the week for rod and reel
maintenance and repair. Hours: Jun-Aug, Sat [8am-Noon]; Fri [4-8pm], Mon-Fri, various hours. Volunteers are not
required to work every Saturday throughout the summer. Minimum age: 16, or 15 with adult.
Special Events Volunteer  Join in the fun of community event that relies heavily on volunteers doing specific tasks.
Special event activities and dates may vary, and tasks may include but not limited to: festival greeter, front desk
receptionist, catch and release fishing assistant, parking lot attendant, volunteer assistant, kid's activities, preparation and
clean-up and more. Hours: Vary, Apr-Oct. Min age: 16, or 15 with adult
