please complete the survey.
Improvements to trails depend on the results
of this survey.
Pennsylvania has one of the lowest
Registration Fees in the country. Good
snowmobile trails take the
cooperation of everyone.
Trails are not free. “We
cannot improve the system
without more consistent financial backing.” The current $10 Registration fee
does not cover costs to
maintain and improve the
entire system.
Check this issue of the Keystone Snowmobiler for information on where/whom to
report trail problems. The Keystone Snowmobiler publishes all the club information. It can
also be found on the PSSA website. www.pasnow.org Standardized signage will help you
locate the nearest club. We want everyone
to be safe.
The American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA) is the eyes and ears of all
snowmobilers nationwide. This Association
provides information to all Snowmobile Associations to help protect trails in the entire
country. Consider joining or making a donation to this organization. Information is on
the PSSA web-site.
We regret to announce the passing of the
mother of Henry Hartman (Amy). Henry and
his wife Peggy publish the Keystone Snowmobiler. Our thoughts and prayers are extended
to their family.
Thanks to all the volunteers, donors and
sponsors who help build and maintain our
trail system!

Riding Season.

President PSSA
HAPPY PRESIDENTS DAY AND HAPPY VALENTINES DAY.
The snowmobile trails were excellent in
Western PA. I hope everyone had a chance
to get out and ride. As I write this message
the temperature is expected to soar to the high
50’s. We cannot control the weather.
A group of sledders from Somerset County recently reported the trails in the Allegheny
National Forest (ANF) were excellent. The
following day, however, snowplows were out
and some joint-use roads were plowed to the
dirt. Jim Seyler, ANF Operations Staff Officer,
had sent letters to the gas drilling/snowplow
subcontractors (63) requesting them to leave
at least three inches of snow on the road or
leave a 4-5ft path of snow along the side of
the road. The Pennsylvania State Snowmobile
Association (PSSA) recently sent letters to the
same individuals stressing the importance of
snowmobiling to the local economy and asking for their cooperation. The clubs near the
ANF help groom trails and it is disheartening
when plowing occurs within a day or two of
grooming trails. This is a waste of tax dollars. Some of the groomer operators drive to
the ANF from Ohio and spend their weekend
grooming.

House Bill 1643 (11-12) will be reintroduced for a vote. This is the bill that will give
added protection to landowners who allow
trails on their property. The Bill can be found
on the Legislative web-site.
PSSA will be sending out Voucher Raffle
ticket information in the near future. This is
one way to help support the work of PSSA.
Grant funding for this year is much less than
in former years.
PSSA is conducting a user survey. The last

Round III minigrants will be
closed and the
2011-12 minigrant program
will have concluded.
Many important projects have been undertaken
through the mini-grant program, making the
trails safer and more enjoyable in Pennsylvania.
While the current mini-grant program has concluded, another will be available in the fall of
2013. The beginning of this mini-grant period
will be announced on the PSSA website as well
as in the media. Be on the lookout for the application located in the “downloadable documents” section of the PSSA website.
Start thinking ahead to the next round of
grants!
The mini-grants project is financed in part by a
grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program, Pennsylvania Recreational
Trails Program funded through the Federal
Highway Administration, under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation. Its purpose is to help
clubs repair and maintain trails and grooming
equipment and assist with grooming expenses.
The clubs have proposed a number of projects
for trail maintenance, grooming and restoration in their areas.

Executive Director
Winter greetings!
I’m pleased to be
able to say that
we’ve had snow and
great riding in several areas so far this year!
It’s so nice to be able to go our website, www.
pasnow.org, and check out our four webcams
as well as link to the webcams of several
snowmobile clubs to see if and where there
is snow. We’ve compared last year’s visits to
PSSA’s website to this year’s and the number
has more than doubled because of these
webcams and internet marketing. We very
much appreciate the grant we received from
the PA Tourism Office that made this possible.
There are many snowmobiling activities
planned around the state, including poker
runs, and winter festivals. Be sure to check
out our website, www.pasnow.org and
Facebook page www.facebook.com/
pasnow to keep up with events around the
state.

We are proud to have distributed three
$500 Snow Angel Grants, totaling
$1,500, and $3,200 in holiday
donations in 2012 due to your previous
generosity. As a result, we need to
continue to build and replenish the Snow
Angel Charity Fund. Please buy or sell
the raffle tickets you received. If you
do not wish to purchase them, we ask
that you kindly return them for us to
sell elsewhere. The drawing for the cash
prizes will be held at the April 6th Annual
Membership Meeting in State College.
You may also send in a donation check
and note “Snow Angel” in the memo
section. Raffle Tickets must be received
in the PSSA office by March 31st .
Please plan to attend this one-day event
as this is your annual chance to interact
with your association’s Board of Directors
and connect with other members
from around the state. We need
your input in order to
represent you well.
A registration form is provided in this
issue or you may download a registration
form from the website. The membership
meeting and elections will be held in
the morning, an awards luncheon will
occur at noon and education sessions
will be held in the afternoon. A Tombola
Auction (purchase tickets for individual
item drawings) will be held throughout
the day with winners being announced
beginning at 3:30, along with the Snow
Angel Raffle Drawing Winners. Plans are
still being finalized, but more details will
appear in the March issue.

much smoother ride.
Next meeting will be Feb 3rd at 7pm at the
Barrel House Restaurant.
Hope to see you all at the “Winter Run” &
think SNOW!!!!
Kathy Cledgett, Secretary
PSSA Region 9
The biggest news from Glendale Lake SMC
is that we’ve had a good start to the snowmobile season. There has been three weeks of
great riding. Many club members have been
riding from their homes or at the local and near
local state parks and forests. We’ve finally been
able to ride to a club meeting, which are held
the first Monday of each month at the Patton
Area Sportsman Club. If you live in the Cambria, Blair or Clearfield County areas, please
consider joining us. In addition to the riding
around the Glendale area, club members have
enjoyed riding at the Black Moshannon, SP Elliott, and Colerain State Parks. Black Mo and
SP have had some great snow cover and good
grooming as well. In addition to the trails that
we’ve enjoyed so far this year, the club is very
actively working on getting some new trails
developed. Please lend your support to getting
the new trails by attending our club meetings.
To take care of these trails we are also working
on acquiring a groomer. So a lot is happening to
benefit snowmobilers in our area. We also had
a snowmobile safety class put on the end of last
year by Don of Don’s Sled Shop.
It was announced that in an effort to increase attendance at our monthly meetings,
starting in February, we will be having a “Banik’s Fun Draw”. Andy Banik of Banik’s Sales and
Service, the local Ski Doo Dealer, announced
that Banik’s will sponsor a drawing at each
meeting. All members names will be placed in a
box and at each meeting a name will be drawn
from the box for a $50.00 Gift Certificate to
Banik’s Sales and Service. In order to win, the
GLENDALE LAKE SMC
person whose name is drawn must be current
with their Club dues and also be present at the
meeting. Thanks to Banik’s for their support of
the Club with this great idea for increasing attendance at out meetings.
Dues are now due for 2013. A single membership is a very reasonable $25 and business
membership is only $35. Go to our website for
applications or to order a club T-Shirt: www.

PYMATUNING TRAIL
BLAZERS
The Pymatuning Trail Blazers are looking forward to a busy season. Hopefully the weather
will cooperate.
Weekends, weather permitting, the clubhouse
is open to snowmobile riders for warm ups -coffee, hot chocolate and snacks.
A snowmobile fundraiser Poker Run is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26th. If no snow, backup date is Feb. 9th. Registration is to be at the
Jamestown Fireman’s Club and will end at the
club with food and bon fire. This event helps
with trail work expenses and monetary to the
local firemen.
On Feb. 2nd and 3rd we will hold our annual
FUN DAYS at Pymatuning State Park. The two
days are filled with snow, fun and games, food
and legal drinks, crafts for the young or old,
a bon fire, trail rides and displays of new and
old snowmobiles and lots of other activities for
the snowmobilers and public.
The boys are grooming the trails in preparation for lots of riding. The groomer has been
down with mechanical problems, which the
boys have repaired, so it is ready. The trails
are ready and all are ready for a winter of
riding and “FUN”.

POE VALLEY SMC
Well as the old saying goes “good things
come to those who wait”, and it finally came
true! We received some SNOW! We have ridden
numerous days for a couple of weeks now. The
trails are good and the fellowship is just what
we’ve been waiting for. Both Rothrock and Bald
Eagle State Forests are ready for riding.
The club performed some trail cleanup
during the first snowfall, cutting numerous fallen trees off the trails in Rothrock S.F. We also
came to the rescue directly after an accident,
calling 911 and summoning an ambulance to
the scene for an off-trail accident. Well wishes
to the victim and a speedy recovery from the
Poe Valley Snowmobile Club. Names have been
withheld to protect the innocent. We also rescued a stranded pickup just over the embankment on TurkeyHill Road. It was a long walk
to Greenwood State Park to summon our help.
All sleds seem to be working fine after a
last minute tune-up, once we got to ride for the
first time in over a year. Remember you can
always call for trail conditions unless I’m on the
trail and have no cell phone service.
Just after our last ride during the first
week, we finished up at the runaway truck
ramp near Laurel Run Reservoir. Much to our
surprise after shooting the bull (not Elk), we
looked up and saw two Bald Eagles in flight
over the mountain just in front of us. It is just
amazing to experience the sighting of one of
the most majestic birds in North America, right
here in our area. Hope you get a chance to ride
soon, and remember, be safe!

GROOMING BENEFITS IN PA – WHY YOU SHOULD CARE –
THOUGHTS ON WHY TO GET A GROOMER
For those of you lucky enough to be
able to get out and ride the last few weeks I
don’t know if you have the chance to ride in
a groomed snowmobiling area or not. But, if
you do then you already know what I’m going
to describe here. In Pa we’re lucky to even
get snow at times unlike our further northern
counterparts but around here when it does
snow we get out the equipment that we have
and run it around the trails if snow does come.
The idea here is that grooming is a big part of
snowmobiling and I wanted to share my example of how grooming affects a trail system.
I went to the McKean Snowriders January Poker run two years ago. It was a nice
time but one thing was lacking: Grooming.
After talking with a few of the club members
I found out that they were in process of getting paperwork together for a new groomer
(their old one was on it’s last leg) and that
possibly by the next year it would happen.
Well, last year came and yep, they got a new
groomer in the spring of 2012 (see picture).
It’s a really nice one and they were lucky to
not have to need it during the lousy winter of
2011 – 2012. So leap forward to this winter
and bam we’ve had consistent snow around
Pa for about 3 weeks now. That has made
the difference and in McKean and other areas
they’ve been able to fire up the groomers and
get them out on the trail. And in a place like
McKean this made the Poker Run an excellent
trail riding experience. They did the best job
possible on the snow that was available to
get the trails they are responsible for flat and
fast. It was a world of difference in conditions
compared to not having a groomer in operation. I was talking with the club president
after the event and mentioned about the costs
of it. He mentioned that with the 20% share
that clubs must put up for their portion and
with the poker run bringing in additional
needed $$ that they would be able to handle
the groomer expense. This is great news and
doesn’t burden the club excessively and I (as a
treasurer) was glad to hear that we don’t put a
lot of burden on them with a grooming setup.
Now, I’m not going to say that everyone has a
handle on it all because grooming equipment
is expensive overall. Not just a purchase or
running it once a year but keeping the equipment in operation as a whole. See, here in Pa
if you don’t know, the PSSA gets grants that
clubs can apply for to keep the groomers operating. Yes, everyone in Pa puts their money
from the registrations toward this so it’s Pa
wide that funds these operations. And the
benefit ? Just like in McKean there are others
which may have gotten a groomer this year.
And one of those is the Laurel Hill State Park.
Here in Western Pa, State Parks received a
new side by side with a drag to groom some
previously ungroomed tight wood sections
that hadn’t been groomed in 30 years. I had
a chance to ride these trails as well on a recent
weekend and can unequivocally say that without a doubt that the trails with grooming drew
more traffic and generated more conversation
about how nice the trail system was than ever
before. These comments also go a long way
towards good will in those areas within the
state also. Drawing fewer complaints and
maybe even getting some positive feedback to
those within DCNR for doing a good job. For
that we thank them for their efforts that previously were a bumpy winter trail section to now
being a nicely groomed woods trail ride. Personally, I can’t wait to go out again on it and
will enjoy it many times thanks to the funding
that gets these groomers in operation. Like I
mentioned while this may be old hat to some
of you. Others like my experiences in these
two riding areas which were previously not
groomed brings interest and more riders to
these areas. And if the areas get better (more
trails) then that also brings $$ to the local
businesses and we all know how politicians
love to see the $$ coming in to their voters.
So, if you ever get a chance to check
out the McKean Poker run do so. You won’t
complain about the groomer for sure. It’s a
Prinoth with a vibrating pan to flatten out the
trail. The groomer drag cost them another
6g’s to get the better features they wanted but
it surely does the job and I personally want
to thank them for their efforts and my trail
riding experience was a nice riding day there
due to that.

HYNER MT. SMC
Hello from Hyner Mountain. Just wanted
to let everyone know what has been happening up on the mountain. Snow, finally! But first,
let me mention that we at the lodge hope everyone out there had a very safe and happy
New Year. About a dozen or so of our members
brought in 2013 together in fine fashion at
the lodge. New Year’s Eve consisted of chicken
wings, french fries, and champagne; while New
Year’s Day was a little more traditional: pork
and sauerkraut, and champagne.
Well after a long, long wait I can finally let
you know something special that has been happening up on the mountain . . snowmobiling!
That’s right, old man winter has given us, so far
this season, some decent snow on the trails to
ride. The first two weekends, this past month,
has afforded us with more miles on the sleds;
already more
than all of last
year combined.
Let’s just hope
this continues. It
was real good to
see all the sled
traffic out on
the trails, and to
see all the sleds
at the local businesses,
which
rely heavily on
the snowmobilers.
Speaking of the trails, I want to say on behalf of Hyner Mt. SMC, thank you to the DCNR
staff of both Tiadaghton and Sproul State Forests for the great job they did grooming. The
two weekends we rode, there were groomers
out day and night. Thanks, and keep up the
good work! Also, we had the opportunity to
ride on a couple of the new trails placed on the
pipeline, due to the gas industry, and they were
fantastic. Please be reminded, not all of the
pipelines have been opened yet, so know which
ones are and which are not before you ride.
Well that’s about all for now. Remember to
ride safe and ride smart. Talk to ya next month.
Think Snow!

Greetings! I’ll tell you, what an awesome
sight to see pulling into our Club House on
Dec. 29th! There were 30+ sleds in the yard,
and a whole lot of trailers! It’s always great
to ride with so many friends!
Some of our members put over 350 miles
on their machines! A slew of us rode the loop
on the 30th. We really had a nice ride! The
trails were a little rough in a few places, but
after last year’s Western PA’s riding, (or lack
of), it was just nice to be on our own trails! We
took a detour up to Jake’s Rock and stopped to
look down on the Kinzua Dam. This is by far
my favorite view in the ANF!
We rang in the New Year together and as
always, had a blast! I also heard the riding
in the ANF was pretty good this past weekend
too. I was however riding in New York. The
trails in and around Chautauqua were a little
rough. Like us, they’re all hoping for colder
temps and a whole lot of snow!
Hopefully by the next article, I’ll have
much more to report. Until then, ride safe,
maintain your sleds, and hope for snow! Go
Penguins!

FOREST COUNTY SNOWMOBILE CLUB
News from Kellettville, PA
We had some really great riding here in the
Allegheny National Forest (ANF) in late December/early January. We’re now having the January thaw so hopefully it will be short-lived. The
summer grooming that was done on sections of
the trails the last few years has really paid off.
Riders commented how the trails were smoother
and the grooming held up better. Our two groomers logged a lot of hours out on the trails to try to
keep up with the snow and sled traffic.

plans to come out this season, as I think you’ll be
surprised at the quality of the trails. Volunteers
spent hundreds of hours during the past three
summers working with the excavator contractor
and Forestry, trails have been widened, drainage improved, and tons of stone spread. This
has helped tremendously to improve the winter
grooming. Thanks to the volunteers who sacrificed their summers and the great cooperation
with the Forestry and PSSA. Funds to pay for the
contractor on these projects was from unspent
winter grooming budgets and RAC monies we
received for Warren and Forest Counties from
timber sales. Hope to see you out on the trail!

MCKEAN SNOWRIDERS
SMC
The McKean SnowRiders snowmobile club has
had an exciting year! The REALLY BIG NEWS
for our club is the purchase of a new groomer
and drag for maintaining our portion of the
snowmobile trails in Erie County! Funding for
this new equipment was the result of a DCNR
grant approved for our club, as well as our club
member matching funds. Thanks to everyone in
our community that helped us out by purchasing one of our fundraiser tickets, attending a
fundraiser event, or making a donation.

And since we had our new groomer – our trails
were in GREAT condition for the poker run. Just
a note about the new groomer... It is a fantastic
piece of machinery. A Prinoth Trooper groomer
and an Advanced Trail Paver for a drag. These
are both top of the line in groomer equipment.
BUT, the most important part of our success in
having great trails is not the equipment, but the

As a result of receiving our new groomer and

volunteer work to widen the trails in order to
accommodate the larger groomer. Since our

We had riders come in from all over the state

Hello again from the top of the mountain, Pigeon Hill Road, Germania, PA. I hope everyone
had a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy
New Year.
The GCBFSMC safety class was held on Oct.
20, 2012 at the club house on Pigeon Hill. We
began enrollment at 7:15 am. We had 11 adolescents enrolled and 2 adults. Class started at
8 am. Rick Yonkin and Wayne Prouty were in
attendance to conduct the class. At 9:30 we
took our morning breakfast doughnut and hot
chocolate break. Class resumed about 10 and
Corporal Sean Batterson of the Pa. State Police
arrived to instruct everyone on the State Regulations for snowmobile riding. He was followed
by Ranger Paul Tubbs of the Pa. DCNR who
discussed the forest regulations. When they
finished their discussions and training we had
a Lunch break that consisted of Pizza and Hot
Wings. Class resumed at 1 pm with Mr. Ken
Wingo and his Safety First Aid instructions. Then
it was reviewing for the test and the final exam.
We are happy to report that all the class passed
with flying colors. Certificates and patches were
handed out and class was dismissed at 3:30 pm.
Thanks to all for their participation. As always
it was a pleasure to have such a great group.
Thanks to the parents that brought their kids.
Thanks to our Special Guests: Trooper Batterson, Ranger Paul Tubbs and Mr. Ken Wingo.
We would like to send a special thanks to Rick
Yonkin who has taught this class for 31 years.
Also, thanks to Jean Wog and Pat Shatto for the
food preparation and serving the food, and also
for registering the class, and grading the tests.
Well, Mother Nature worked her magic with
a beautiful 11–12 inch snow fall right after
Christmas. What a wonderful sight after last
year. Then we received another 5-6 inches 2
days later. I think everyone with a sled was out
somewhere riding the trails. I took a good ride
Saturday, December 29th. I went to Black Forest Inn and Slate Run. I saw lots of sleds; had
some good food and the trails were ok. For the
amount of sleds that have been out, the groomers are doing a good job keeping up with the
trails.
On Sunday,
December 30th, I
went to the Cross
Fork area.
I
stopped at Deb’s
Place and Jeff’s
Store. Again-good
food, good trails
and Jeff was doing
a good business. The 2012 Safety Class.
Our groomer
has been running almost every day since the
27th of December. Please remember we are a
private club and depend on donations from our
members, guests, and visitors for our income.
We are not reimbursed by anyone for the expenses and fuel for our groomer. We try our
best to have good smooth trails in our region.
Please be generous when you see a groomer
donation jar at our local businesses this winter.
Thank You!
Don’t forget about our world famous, all
you can eat breakfasts Sundays, 8am till 12pm.
Also, snow conditions permitting, our club
serves lunches on Saturdays from 11 am till 3
pm. We serve homemade soups, sandwiches,
snacks, and drinks.
Riding on Thursday, January 3rd and Friday, January 4th the trails were excellent in our
area. All groomers running at night, and it was
the best riding I have seen in a long time.

I have one last thing I need to get off of my
chest. We are having a lot of problems with
sleds not following our groomed and marked

too many brown bottles of adult beverages are
causing these problems…so please think before you don’t follow the rules. Or, maybe you
would like to come along with me next spring
when I get called to visit an irritated farmer or
tree grower in our region and they ask about
their destroyed winter wheat, or trees that were
damaged. I have to stand there alone telling
them it won’t happen again, and plead to them
not to close their land to our private trail system. Come on guys and gals-get your head
out of your butt and stay on the trails or stay
at home. Your cooperation and respect will be
greatly appreciated.
Well, I’m out of here until next month!
Thank you!
