Dear readers,
Yes it’s all over…with Spain and
England out of the World Cup I can only
think of one benefit and that is to take
advantage of everything else we have on
offer here in the Costa Blanca.
With the summer sun, long evenings
and the amazing country side the hours
available now not watching the World Cup
will be used by actually enjoying my
favourite pastimes of all. Visitors and residents can settle down to planning the days
ahead without the interruption of watching
the footie unless you have roots with the
best of the rest, Dutch, French, German,
Argentinian or the favourites Brazilian
There are still others to mention in the last
16 but for me I guess I've mentioned the
winner already.
The beach, the mountains and of course
my patio are now all firm favourites over
and above the remaining teams, the pub
and watching England was always my plan
for June with the hope of it going into July
but after the pain of watching the first two
games I really am pleased I can now relax.
Thousands of last minute holiday bookings were recorded as the fate of England
unfolded and the plans of many people
back home changed.
Football celebrations at home, together
with family, friends, good weather, the
World Cup and a summer BBQ are always
popular but with the disappointment and a
feeling of doom and gloom booking a last
minute holiday is an instant cure.
Benidorm and the region will benefit from
the increase of travel bookings so I am
sure the feel good factor will continue as
the Costa Blanca continues to be the number one choice in mainland Spain.

SPEED
BRAKED
New speed limits on Spanish roads are expected to be in
force by the end of the summer, according to the General
Directorate of Traffic (DGT). This is all part of the new road
traffic laws that hit the statute book a few weeks ago, and
DGT boss, María Seguí, says that some town roads will see
their limits reduced from the standard 50 kms per hour to 30
or even 20, meaning first gear only for most cars.
And speed limits on all secondary roads will reduce to 90
kms per hour, as opposed to 100 as many currently stand at.
Seguí says this is because a quarter of all fatalities in road
accidents happen in towns, and involve pedestrians and
cyclists more than drivers or passengers. Certain stretches of
the motorways will increase to 130 kms per hour, provided
they meet specific requirements relating to road and weather
conditions.
RYANAIR’S
REVENGE
Budget airline carrier, Ryanair, could end
up as a part owner of
Alicante-Elche airport
as well as the facility at
San Javier. This follows
the news that the
Madrid government is
to sell off 49% of its
stake in airport operator, AENA, which currently owns a large
number of Spanish airports, including the two in this region. Public works minister,
Ana Pastor, has insisted that AENA would still remain a stateowned organisation as the government would own 51% of
the shares, but the sell-off would see the agency will release
49% of the stake, with 21% allocated to public administrations and a further 28% to private investors. Ryanair would
be after both portions, it has admitted.
Ryanair’s marketing head Peter Bellew revealed that 3 billion Euros have been earmarked to fund the operation, which
may see them also go into partnership with other carriers.
However, the exec complained about the partial privatisation,
and claimed that a complete sell-off "would result in a more
efficient and competitive agency". The carrier has had a high
profile running battle over the cost of using AENA’s facilities,
including a well-publicised reduction of winter services at
Alicante-Elche 2 years ago.

Madoc is saying hello to
another holiday resort...

The actress famous for
her role as Gladys Pugh in
the comic saga of the
Maplins holiday camp is to
make an appearance in
the hit TV show set in the Solano hotel on the Costa Blanca.
And the creator of the show has revealed that as well as 71year-old Ruth another TV legend has been booked for another cameo role. Dynasty star Joan Collins makes her return as
Solana chief Crystal Hennessy-Vass. The show’s Derren
Little, 43, said: “Joan is terrific, she has a scene with Johnny
Vegas and I think it might be the funniest scene we have ever
had in the show.
"I can’t say too much but it involves Johnny and Elsie Kelly,
who plays his mum Noreen and it is just so funny. "I am looking forward to it, I can’t wait.”
STING STUNG KNEE TREMBLING
Four alleged con-artists who ran an illegal sports betting
website and are said to have stolen hundreds of thousands
of Euros of customers' money have been arrested in
Benidorm and Burgos. The National Police say that at least
400 people, mostly in Spain, were stung, after being duped
by aggressive sales techniques and the offer of 'introductory
bonuses' worth up to 1,000 Euros. The four accused operated through a fake company which was registered in Spain
using forged ID. They then appointed international financial
brokers and advisors working for Spanish banks and placed
bets via legal sports gambling sites in Switzerland and
Poland.
The site was live between June 2011 and June 2012, when
it disappeared from the web without trace and customers'
funds with it – and despite repeated requests, the victims
never got their money back.
At its high point, the website had around 4,000 customers
worldwide and was handling funds of up to 7.5 million Euros,
but by the time it shut down, it had about 400 investors and
approximately half a million Euros on its books.
Benidorm’s Gran Hotel Bali was the setting for last weekend’s seventh staging of the Base Jump Extreme World
Championships, with a number of brave(or foolhardy souls)
parachuting off the top of the 60 metre building. Italian, Iván
Colella, was declared the winner, with Brit, Julian Deplidge
coming second, however the event did not perfectly as two
competitors, Patrick Guisasola of Spain and Brian Shannon
from the U.S.A needed hospital treatment after colliding with
the building on their jump. During the event which was
spread across two days a three way simultaneous jump took
place in memory of two base jumpers who lost their lives during this extremely dangerous sport.
Beach Choir Told To Vary Locations
Each morning on Levante beach close
to The Guinness Bar and Subway you
will stumble across a large crowd of
pensioners singing their hearts out.
Most people who have visited Benidorm
and anyone who lives in town would
have at some point stumbled across
this performance. The 'coro popular'
(popular choir) get together each day
and like to sing traditional songs, however they have been told to vary their
location and stop singing in the same
place. You will notice that due to their
singing this part of the beach normally
has quite a large amount of space available as the large group can sing
extremely loud it’s a wonder how they
have just been told to move around
rather than keep the noise down completely.
MANY people who have holidayed in Benidorm and of
course its residents will no doubt at some stage been entertained by the 'coro popular' (popular choir) that each morning
gathers on Levante beach and holds an impromptu concert.
Made up of retired people who like to get together and sing
traditional songs, the choir has been told to stop singing in
the same place every day and instead vary its location.

Countdown
Benidorm’s very own casino is progressing to its completion, for those who have
noticed the building on the Avenida
Mediterraneo , the signage is now up and it’s
had a paint job using the iconic black and
blue used across the Casino Mediterráneo
group which you can see from the photo, we
have also included a concept drawing of the
original artist impression and its right on the
money, in the background you can see a tall
hotel which will be a future project. We
talked with management and they confirmed
that the project remains on schedule and is
due to be completed towards the end of July,
it is astonishing as they only started building
back in January and the construction has
been fluid in its progress. Spread across 3
floors and 3,600 square metres of space,
there will be an exclusive area for poker tournaments, a range of slot machines and other
gaming tables, the ground floor will be used

Martinez, the proud Author of “If It's Wrong to
Love You” Heidi is the owner of the Monroes
Restaurant & Carvery chain and during her
spare time little by little wrote her very own
novel, it is a fantastic achievement which
has been published and is available at every
Monroes Restaurant and also in the British
Bookshop in Benidorm’s Indoor Market,
Heidi hosted a book signing at the Benidorm
restaurant and was happy to see many people coming to collect their own copy and
as an exhibition centre perfect for corporate
events and video/cinema screenings and the
upper floor will have a restaurant and a sun
terrace, there is also an underground car
park. Normal casino rules will apply such as
photo ID for every visitor, no under 18’s and
a dress code. The casino will be open from
10am until 4am, we will be bringing you all
the latest news and developments over the
next few weeks along with the confirmed
opening date.

times a year and when we come we eat at
Monroes regularly, at least twice a week,
more if we can, we absolutely love it and

staying at the Gregori self-catering apartments right now so we have not visited as
much as normal, which is a shame as the
new summer menu is lovely”. We asked
them, what makes them keep returning to
Benidorm? Paul told us “We have been coming for over four years now, it’s just cheap
cheerful and lots of fun. The beach is sandy,
the drink is handy and the women are
randy”, this certainly made us laugh and we
left them to enjoy their meal and their new

donate over 200kg of
food to Cruz Roja
Specsavers Opticas in Benidorm collected
over 200kg of food for the Cruz Roja during
their week-long food collection campaign
and were delighted with the generosity of
local residents.
The food collected has been delivered to
the Cruz Roja Benidorm’s food bank and
therefore even small donations of food really
make a difference. 200kg of food is a fantastic result over one week and will supplement
our existing supplies to enable us to help so
many people in need. Many thanks to
Specsavers Benidorm for arranging the collection and all those people who donated.”

Benidorm's Ireland
battling cancer
'Benidorm' star Kenny
Ireland is fighting cancer, it
has been revealed.
The actor - who plays
swinger Donald Stewart in
the ITV show - has been
written out of the latest
series as he battles the disease and undergoes treatment. “The diagnosis was
crushing for Kenny and his
family. This is obviously a
very difficult time for them
and they are coping as best
they can. “The priority is Kenny’s health. As
soon as he was given the news he pulled out
of the latest series of Benidorm which, of
course, everyone understood." The 68-yearold - who also appeared in 'Auf
Wiedersehen, Pet' - said it was his wife,
Meg, who originally put him forward for
'Benidorm'. After landing the role, he said: “If
your wife gets you a job as a swinger, is she
trying to tell you something?”
Steve Pemberton has said he left Benidorm
because he missed his family while shooting
the comedy away in Spain. The Happy Valley
star, who has played patriarch Mick Garvey
on the ITV show since it began in 2007, will
make his exit during the seventh series, along
with his screen family - Siobhan Finneran (his
screen wife Janice), Sheila Reid (mother-inlaw Madge), Hannah Hobley (daughter
Chantelle) and Oliver Stokes (son Michael).
"It's a long time to be away from home - it's
three months away from the family - so that
was a big part in deciding to move on. But
because I'm doing stuff like Happy Valley and
Mapp And Lucia, I'm very lucky that I have
other things to do," he said. The Garvey fam-
ily have already shot their final scenes.
"We've left Benidorm. We filmed our scenes
early on this year so we're going to be in the
first episode or two of the new series, but
then the whole Garvey family are leaving,"
Steve explained. "It's a very sad time really,
but I felt the time was right for us to move on
and do different things. And I'm sure the
show will go on from strength to strength. "It's
a phenomenon. To do seven series is
extraordinary and to have such a big following, but for us - me, Siobhan, Sheila and all
who play the Garvey family - we all felt it was
time to move on and do other things," he
continued. The seventh series of Benidorm,
which sees returning cast members Elsie
Kelly, Crissy Rock and Johnny Vegas, will air
in 2015.

Nuevo Alcazar La Nucia
If you like good food then you will absolutely
love this place, it’s tranquil, spacious and so
inviting. The cuisine offers a wide range of
international dishes that has all of the
favourites from around Europe.
The Buzz team went along to meet Christopher the owner
and his team to discover more about the cuisine at
Restaurant Nuevo Alcazar.
The setting is combined of a large terrace featuring a centre piece water feature, together with an open dining room
leading out onto the terrace also the main restaurant that is
split over two levels. The decor is attractive colonial style
with decorative pillars and leather upholstered furniture. The
table setting is stylish and is complemented with a service
that is impeccable.
Our choice of starters were Carpaccio of Beef Rossini
served with goose liver gratin and truffle oil dressing. The
other plate was a Trio of Seafood that combined North Sea
Shrimps with king prawns and scampi each served individually onto a salad. The choice of starters on the menu were
extensive and there was a selection of Cold and Warm
options also a selection of homemade soups.
As the temperature of the evening was in the high twenties and my summer appetite had arrived, I wanted to enjoy
a healthy lighter dish, so the Seafood Trio was a perfect
choice. It was fresh and cool and with a tasty tangy dressing,
presented well and extremely enjoyable. The Carpaccio of
beef Rossini was a mouth-watering combination that melted
away in your mouth and in fact the toast served on the side
had been forgotten as the meat was so good it really wasn't
needed and was only remembered after we had finished.
For main course I was tempted by the variety of fish dishes but unfortunately on this occasion the fish on the menu
will have to wait until next time. Although I would like to mention that the menu offers the best choice of fish that you will
find anywhere in the Costa Blanca., there was turbot, cod,
monkfish and salmon that all play a big part in the menu as
well as others. I decided on the Fillet of Steak with a red
wine sauce and goose liver pate, the Rack of Lamb was
tempting but I love my steaks, I had it cooked medium which
came out fabulous and it was served with a cauliflower and
complemented with a potato cake.
The other main was Fillet of Pork with cognac and cream
sauce with onion and pear, with a choice of sauté potatoes
and French fries were served on the side. The portion sizes
were generous and we were absolutely delighted with the
quality of the food.
There is also fresh lobster on the menu with five varieties
to choose from, a Children's menu that has been designed
with a variety of the younger generations favourites.
The chef, Javier Boccalandro and his team combine the
French, Belgian, and Mediterranean cuisines into enticing
dishes, prepared with only the best fresh ingredients, they
are used to serving a full restaurant of nearly 200 covers
most evenings with the visitors coming from far around and
have been coming back over and over through the years.
I had noticed there was a table arrangement in the restaurant which was prepared for a party that seated 20 and after
talking with Christophe he explained that they hosted a variety of parties most evenings.
They also have their own extensive wine cellar that holds
over 100 Spanish and French wines that simply compliment
the excellent service and exceptional setting.
This magnificent building is located on the CV70 on the
roundabout number six coming from Benidorm towards La
Nucia.
We were mostly impressed with the quality of the cooking
together with the presentation of the dishes. A first class recommendation from us at the Buzz Newspaper.

CALBLANQUE
An unspoilt beach on Spain’s coastline is a rare find,
incredibly only a stone’s throw from the high-rise
apartments and hotels of tourist hotspot La Manga
If you are looking for a hidden paradise, with
virgin beaches, breath-taking mountains and
very few people, then take a trip along to
Calblanque, which lies just south of La Manga
and the Mar Menor.
This stunning stretch of coast was declared a natural park
in 1987 and a nature reserve in 1992; which should protect
it from the encroachment of ever-spreading development.
As one of the last remaining untouched areas of the entire
Mediterranean coastline, this is truly a special place. Even
though a recent fire burnt some of the pine trees in the natural park, the area remains outstandingly beautiful.
Calblanque is a haven of sandy beaches, dunes, tiny
coves, majestic cliffs and hills covered in blankets of green
forests. On the outskirts of the park lie the remains of old silver, copper and tin mines.
If one word were to sum up Calblanque’s beaches, it
would have to be ‘tranquillity’. The only sounds you hear as
you stroll along the sandy shores are the waves breaking at
your feet. Precious, but fragile sand dunes are protected by
wooden walkways.
The park stretches for some 13 kilometres. Fossil-filled
mountains overlook the beaches, soaring to around 1,000
feet. As you climb, you can see across acres of pine trees,
all the way to the sea.
A popular walking route, about 15 kilometres, stretches
from Calblanque National Park to Cala Reona. The walk is
considered medium in difficulty and takes approximately two
hours to complete. There
are a fair amount of
loose stones, so
walking boots are
advisable.
On the east side of the parking lot at Calblanque, you can
find a barely visible path that will lead you up into and around
the hills, from where you can enjoy fabulous views of the
sands of Calblanque.
Then, you will reach a steep decline with views of the town
of Cala Reona. You may choose to continue into town for a
meal, the paellas in Cabo de Palos are well worth a taste, or
to return to the peace of Calblanque.
Costa Calida means ‘warm coast’, and the area has one of
the most pleasant climates anywhere. The coastal sun
shines almost every day – an average of 320 days a year.
Rainfall is rare and averages between two and two-and-ahalf inches on the coastal plain throughout the year. The
inland mountains receive just a
little more precipitation.
Calblanque offers
m a n y
walking trails and cycling paths. The park is famous for its
wildlife including eagles, woodpeckers, rare eagle-owls
(known as Bonelli's eagle) and endangered sea turtles.
The park gives you an opportunity to view the coast of
Spain as it once was. However, visitors are encouraged to
respect this fragile and delicate eco-system and follow several established guidelines.
Naturists are rather fond of Calblanque’s beaches, so don’t
be surprised to see a few naked bodies.
Getting there
Calblanque is just off the MU312, shortly before it joins the
dual carriageway leading to La Manga. Heading in the direction of La Manga, drive past Los Belones and take the next
exit, which is signposted to Calblanque. You will find car
parking areas, an information booth, a camping area and list
of recommended routes.

there is ample room to park
your car nearby or if you wish
to take the bus you can jump
on at Avenida Europa you can
check times on the ALSA website , once there the market is
easily marked, just follow the
white-on-green arrows with
"Mercado Medieval".

Meet the lovely Jess who came into the
pound with her sister 2 years ago and we
had a hard time homing them as the pound
wanted them to remain together. Then after
a campaign that covered all the newspapers,
radio stations and any facebook site that we
found a home was found for the two of them,
together.
Only to find that
as a pair they
became
double
trouble
on
the
homestead that had
taken them, always
trying to greet people in too excitable a
way so one had to
come back to the
pound. Poor Jess!

girls coat has gone from glossy to
rough>She loves the company of other dogs
and at least she has not pinned for her sister.
Now a home is needed for Jess, a home
where she has space to run and someone to
give her a good groom once in a while. She
knows all the commands for sit, fetch, drop
and stay but needs a gentle reminder now
that she is back in the pound and only gets
out the cage a couple of times a week.

The U3A Marina Baixa Summer Solstice
Black and White evening on Saturday the
21stJune was held in the beautiful garden of
Joan and Bill Flint in Benidorm and was a
huge success, after much planning by Joan
and endless shopping trips with husband
Bill. The attention to the smallest detail for
the table decorations, a most enjoyable meal
and the most wonderful weather the entire
Rob Parker was the DJ for the evening with
dancing by candlelight near the pool just as
Joan had wished. The U3A thanked Joan
and Bill with a gift to show their appreciation
for all the hospitality they offer to the members throughout the year.
The photographic competition organised
by Elaine Mitchell went down extremely
well– the winner for the nature photograph
evening was perfect. Everyone adhered to
the request of wearing black and white, the
tables decorated with fresh white flowers in
black bags and the final touch of black and
white helium balloons. The guests were provided with a 3 course supper, an endless
choice of desserts, fresh fruits and a wonderful selection of cheeses complimented by
membrillo donated by Liz Parkers, Spanish
neighbour in Orcheta, there was a choice of
wines and finally followed by tea or coffee.

fun quiz during the evening assured all the
members socialised together around the

A receptionist of Albir Garden stole more
than 500 British pounds and 200 euros,has
been sentenced to over a year in prison the
robbery took place on the 13th of May last
year, on the day the accused was working on
reception in the Albir Garden Hotel and went
to the area where the customer safes were
located “with the intention to obtain an
unlawful benefit of assets” as stated in the
judgement of the Seventh Division of the
Court of Alicante. Once there, he opened
one of the boxes hired by a foreign tourist,
inside was 480 euros belonging to the key
holder, 60 euros from one friend and 200
euros from another. That money was stolen
by the accused, as stated by the verdict. The
Hotel compensated the victims with 655.81
euros following the rate of the pound to euro
at the time, the hotel claimed 852 euros form
the defendant. The now-convicted submitted
an appeal in July last year after which is the
main reason on the delay of imprisonment,
the former receptionist is now to serve 1 and
a half years in prison.

- Take regular cool showers or baths, or apply a cold compress
- Avoid bath salts,oils and perfumes
- Avoid any creams or lotion containing anaesthetic as
these can cause
allergic reactions
-Avoid scratching the skin.
-Make sure that you drink plenty of water
-Apply moisturizing creams and Aloe Vera gels which have
a soothing effect
-Avoid products such as petroleum jelly
comfort. Don’t give aspirin to children
less than 12 years of age.
Seek medical attention if your burns are
severe or you have any of the following
signs:
-Feeling faint or dizzy
-Rapid pulse or rapid breathing
-Extreme thirst, no urine output, or
sunken eyes
-Pale, clammy, or cool skin
-Nausea, chills, or rash

IN BENIDORM
The opening of the brand new
Iceland store in the Rincon de Loix will
be on Tuesday June 24th at 10am you
can find it just passed the famous
Benidorm Palace.
Our front page story in last week’s
Buzz featured the move and the closing of their store in Centro Commercial
- La Marina Finestrat. Now having had
the opportunity to talk with the directors of the Overseas Supermarket
group we were told why the move was
so important for the group and for the
benefit of their loyal customer base.
The Overseas chain of Iceland stores
launched some years ago with the
Finestrat store on the outskirts of
Benidorm opening in 2010, using their
Customer Loyalty Cards they found a
unique way of monitoring customer
trends and offering some great money
saving rewards. The success of the
loyalty card in all areas of the fourteen
store locations have provided key
information that will benefit their customers. One of the reasons that the
decision was made to close the
Finestrat store and re-open only a few
kilometres away in Benidorm was the
fact that the loyalty cards registered
are mostly used by customers living in
Benidorm. With the extra advantage of
foot traffic and the main bus routes
from Alfaz Del Pi, Albir, Altea and other
areas the new store in
Benidorm is sure to be a
huge success for the group.
The new store will offer
an expanded Grocery
range as well as many new
product lines with more of a
connivance offering. Great
beer and wine deals as well
as all of the products that
suit day trips to the beach
and travel in general.
The modern and up to
date layout will complement the food
and drink range, there are brand new
refrigeration cabents expanding the

summer months ahead as well as the

The overseas group have also made
changes to support the Spanish market place and adapt themselves to
what the locals want.
All of the existing Iceland friendly
faces of the Finestrat store have been
relocated and will be waiting to welcome you at the new store. The
increase of opening hours and customers will increase the staff hours as
well as providing additional jobs. With
nine stores in mainland Spain, four in
Tenerife and one store in Portugal the
overseas chain are soon expected to

Steven Gerrard has urged Harry Redknapp to name and
shame the players he claims wanted to withdraw from
England duty while he was manager of Tottenham.
Redknapp claimed on Sunday that certain England players urged him to make them unavailable for international
duty during his tenure at White Hart Lane. But the England
captain has been angered by the claims and demanded the
QPR boss come forward and reveal the players he is referring to. "I don't know who he means. Is it five years ago? 10
years ago? We need names," said Gerrard. "If it's the case,
it's disgusting." The England team are still coming to terms
with their early exit from the World Cup as they prepare to
face Costa Rica in their final Group D game before returning
home. But Gerrard insists there has been no lack of commitment or effort among the squad in Brazil. "I can guarantee
that is not the case here," added Gerrard. "Nobody here
wants to go home. "In the two years I've been here, I've seen
a greater interest in playing for England, so Harry's comments come as a bit of a surprise." Redknapp stunned members of the England camp in Brazil on Sunday with his claims

Wie ends wait at Womens Open
Michelle Wie secured her first major title with a superb
two-shot victory in the US Women's Open. The 24-yearold rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole and

some of the pressure on Wie, who has been in the spotlight since she caught the media’s attention at the age

Snooker player Stephen Lee has been fined £1815
after he admitted a charge of fraud relating to his snooker cue. Good WeekThe former world number five had
arranged to sell it to a fan in Hong Kong via his
Facebook page. Swindon Crown Court heard that
although the fan paid the money into Lee’s wife’s bank
account, he did not send the cue. Lee, of Trowbridge,
Wiltshire, had his appeal against a 12-year ban for
match-fixing dismissed last month. He had also
appealed against having to pay £40,000 costs, which
have now been increased to £75,000.The World
Professional Billiards and Snooker Association said
Lee’s case is "the worst case of snooker corruption
we've seen".

VICENTE THEM RIGHT
Despite Spain’s early shock exit from the
World Cup, the Spanish football federation
(RFEF) doesn’t want coach Vicente del
Bosque to quit. Del Bosque’s contract won’t
end until after the 2016 European
Championships in France, after which the
coach said he may reconsider his position.
RFEF secretary general Jorge Perez, said
that they do not want to lose Del Bosque,
who they consider to be a valuable asset,
and would oppose him trying to resign.
There’s speculation that Del Bosque’s family
are apparently trying to convince the coach
to retire.
Cordoba has been promoted to the
Primera Division for the first time since 1972,
thanks to a premature pitch invasion by Las
Palmas fans and a last-gasp goal. The first
leg was goalless, and the Gran Canaria side
was winning 1-0 with less than two minutes
of injury time left last Sunday, when several

to Andy Murray, but this year surprisingly the Spanish will be doing the
same, with their early exit form the
World Cup all eyes will be on Rafael
Nadal. Murray (27) has been seeded
third in this year’s tournament and
according to McEnroe “Murray has
been handed a fantastic drfaw this
year” Having ended the wait for a
British male singles champion at
Wimbledon after 77 years, Murray will
try to emulate Fred Perry once more by
being the first British male to retain the
title since Perry in 1936.
Perfect Start For Murray
Andy Murray got the defence of his
Wimbledon title off to an ideal start as
he beat David Goffin in straight sets to
advance to the second round.
Murray simply had too much firepower for his Belgian opponent as he completed a 6-1 6-4 7-5 success in a little
over two hours on Centre Court. The
number three seed - whose serve was
not broken during the contest - overwhelmed Goffin in the first couple of
sets, but was extended in the third
before raising his game late on to close
out victory. Murray quelled any early
nerves as he eased into a 3-0 lead
against Goffin, a talented but rather
lightweight player ranked 105th in the
world. A lovely top-spin lob gave him
another break of serve to lead 5-1 and
he took his first set point when Goffin
could not handle a big serve. The
Belgian's biggest achievement was
reaching the fourth round at the French
Open in 2012 and pushing his boyhood
hero Roger Federer to four sets.
