European mobile roamers will see a big cut in the cost of
roaming, with data charges dropping 55 percent or more
compared to last summer. From the 1st of July new roaming
charges within the EU will come into effect.. The rules apply
to the EU 28 plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. They
do not apply to Switzerland.
Rates have been regulated by the European Commission
since 2007, with a series of progressive changes. “Weak
competition among national operators for roaming customers has, at times, led to excessive prices for these services,” an EU statement said when regulations first came into
play. “High premiums for roaming and intra-EU calls are an
excessive irritant to business and leisure customers; they

are a market distortion with
no rational place in a single
market – they teach users to
fear their phones instead of
using them.”
The latest round of cuts
comes along with increased
use of smartphones while
traveling, and the EU issues
an
uncharacteristically
enthusiastic statement. “It's
a big summer sale courtesy
of
the
European
Commission! From 1 July
2014, the EU will cut the
price caps for data downloads by more than half:
down from 45 cents per
megabyte to 20c/MB. It will
become even cheaper to
use maps, watch videos,
check mails and update
social networks while travelling across the EU,
2015. She hopes to win the
support of national telecommunications ministers for
that by the end of this year.
“In 2014 we can finally say
that the telco sector is getting the message about
roaming,” Kroes said, adding
that many companies are
bringing in prices and plans
below the price ceiling set by
the Commission.
While Kroes is confident that
roaming fees will be gone
forever by Christmas 2015,
the fight continues, she said.
“Now it is up to national governments to support what
the overwhelming majority of
Europeans want: a 100 percent end to roaming fees
once and for all,” she said.
Operators will not lose out
on profits, while consumers
European mobile operators
should offer free international roaming, following the
example set by U.S. operator T-Mobile, a European
Commission vice president
said Monday. Neelie Kroes
is ready to take the ultimate
step of abolishing roaming
charges entirely by late
will see no increase in prices
elsewhere, Kroes said.
Cutting roaming prices will
lead travellers to make more
use of mobile phones when
abroad; resulting in more
revenue for operators than
before the roaming price
caps were introduced, she
added.

Welcome Readers...
July 2014 has arrived and although the sport still
dominates my weekly note there are many other
things I would like to tell you about. With the
England team home the only Englishman left at the
World Cup was Howard Webb, one of the
Premierships most popular referees and what a
good job he undertook on Saturday night with Brazil
clinging onto their place in the final stages.
For me it's all about Wimbledon Centre Court
with the focal point being Andy Murray who I am
cheering on every step of the way.
Hot summer days welcome a cool and calming
environment, where better than the beach, we see
thousands of people each day flocking to the beaches in Benidorm but for the experience of a more
tranquil setting there are some amazing beaches
set along the rest of the beautiful coast line. The
place that I have had the pleasure of visiting recently is the beaches in the area of Villa Joyosa only a
few kilometres from Benidorm and easily accessible
by bus.
There are ten beaches to choose from in Villa
Joyosa, my choice was to visit the Bon Nou Beach
to the south of Villajoyosa and also sometimes
known as Bol Nou, it’s a nice sheltered bay with
good sand and with a beach bar, known in Spain as
a “Chiringuito”. Take a look at my photos and review
on page 14 together with a full round up of the other
nine award winning Blue Flag beaches.
The other place to visit that I recommend for
stunning mountain views and a cooling environment
are the water falls at Algar. Bus trips daily are available from Benidorm, visit the Round Town travel
shops for more information. Wear sensible walking
shoes because the steps to climb to the top of the
falls are long and quite steep.
For the younger generations it has to be
Aqualandia Water Park in Benidorm, Wet and Wild
are the only words available to describe the attraction. With over twenty rides to choose from a specialised area for the younger kids and of course the
newest thrill "VERTIGO" the highest capsule slide in
the World…Would you dare? Read my intro next
week to find out if I had the stomach to take on this
frightening experience…

SMELL THE EL SCORCHIO
DOUGH
Major Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has completed introducing a fresh bakery section in every one of its
outlets this week. 303 extra workers have been hired in
Alicante Province alone for the expansion, which is part of
the company’s strategy of investing 26 million Euros to
increase the range and quality of fresh products in every
store. The expanded bakery range, freshly produced on the
premises, include a wide range of breads, pastries, and
cakes.
Spanish weather forecasters are predicting that the Costa
Blanca and Costa Calida could be in for one of the warmest
summers on record. State meteorological agency AEMET
has made a long range projection that says that most of
Spain will have average temperatures and rainfall for the
next two months, but that the eastern part of the country will
have values “several degrees above normal”. Meanwhile,
spring temperatures for the Costa Blanca were some 1.2
degrees Celcius above the average, and it was the driest
spring for over 20 years, with rainfall down by 57 per cent on
normal values.
HOLA
TOURIST TAX
FOR BENI? EVERYBODY!
Benidorm Mayor Agustin
Navarro has been thinking of
the possibility of introducing
a tourist tax in Benidorm,
which is used in various
locations in Europe and
even across the Atlantic in
Miami, last week mayor of
the East Coast, Tomás Pedro Regalado, visited Benidorm in
a visit which aimed to share experiences between the two
locations, and discussed how the adopted policy in Miami
didn’t effect tourist numbers but still increased the economy.
The mayor has stated that the possibilities will be studied and
is something to think about for the future.
A record-breaking 21 million international tourists, including almost five million from the UK, visited Spain between
January and May this year, which is just over eight per cent
more than in the same period in 2013. Figures released by
the Spanish government
show that 6.8 million tourists
came to the country in May
alone. The Valencia region
including the Costa Blanca
welcomed just over two million foreign tourists during
the first five months of the
year, which is a rise of just
over seven per cent on the
same time last year

CUTTING
THE RIBBON
Despite the torrential downpour last week
the doors to the new Iceland store were
opened, the rain really was awful but it didn’t
dampen anyone’s spirits, there was smiles
all round and shoppers couldn’t wait to get
inside and pick out all their favourite products from the UK. The store was opened
together with the same friendly and helpful
staff and management from the Finestrat
store alongside the company directors, they
spoke with us last week telling us how important the move was for the group and for the
benefit of their loyal customer base.
The new store offers an expanded
Grocery range as well as many new product
lines, which includes changes to suit the
Spanish market place this is easily noticeable in the beer and wine section where you
will find a huge choice including
Mahou which is one of the top
beers here in Spain. The store
can be found next to the Pink
House in the Rincon, just past
Benidorm Palace travelling
away from Benidorm. The store
is conveniently located along the
main bus routes from Alfaz Del
Pi, Albir, Altea and other areas
and have also increased their
opening hours, they are now
open 7 days a week and also
close later in the evening at
9.00pm most days.

AIR TRAFFIC
STRIKE EFFECTS
MILLIONS
Last week French air traffic controllers
went on strike causing holiday havoc to millions of people on vacation bu8t to also the
travel and tourism industry in general, with
hotels, bars, restaurants, buses, shuttles
and obviously airlines all taking a hit. People
were left stranded in airports amongst thousands of others with flights being cancelled
with no prior warning and families are left
frustrated with the lack of information they
are being given. Airport staff were unwilling,
or unable to give out news on scheduled
flights without any guarantees that the flight
would actually take off, which actually happened to some aircraft as passengers were
stuck on the runway for hours after boarding
and unable to leave the aircraft. The strike
effected travellers not just in France but also
in the UK, Portugal, Morocco, Tunisia and
Algeria with flights being cancelled Tuesday
and Wednesday, luckily the Strike was called
off before it really got out of hand. The
scores of flights cancelled
Wednesday included those of
Air France and budget carriers
EasyJet and Ryanair. The
strike has been blasted by airlines and trade groups, with
the International Air Transport
Association
condemning
"unions bent on stopping
progress" at the height of the
tourist season in France and
Europe.
The strike which was supposed to go on for 6 days, was
called off after marathon talks
and the government recognised the "importance of investment in the sector," said the
Unsa-ICNA union which launched the
protest.
Over the first two days of the strike,
EasyJet cancelled over 300 flight,
Ryanair250 flights and British Airways over
30.
Marketing chief of Ryanair, Kenny Jacobs,
said EU governments had to step in and stop
French air traffic controllers ‘holding people
to ransom’ with their regular walk-outs: ‘It’s a
disgrace,’ he said. ‘The French need to sort
this out. Ronald Reagan had the right idea
when he broke the air traffic controllers’
strike in the USA by sending in the military to
run it.
‘Strike action by air traffic controllers
should be made illegal. And if they do go on
strike, neighbouring EU countries should be
able to operate the airspace over France to
keep planes flying.’

Sunday 1st of June we had been several months earlier for
a similar event, once again the standard of service was
excellent the table was waiting due to a mix up of numbers
on our account they straight away adjusted the table layout
to our requirements nothing to much trouble. Once again the
food was superb, we had to travel 25 miles to the venue but
would do it any time for this kind of service although i would

VILLAJOYOSA’S BEACHES
Villajoyosa’s beaches are absolutely fantastic. Up and down the Costa Blanca
coast you have many other, very good
beaches but Villajoyosa’s are something
special.
All of Villajoyosa’s beaches have the
European Blue Flag awards which indicate a
good quality standard of beach and it's facilities. To the north of Villajoyosa you have
Benidorm, a high-rise, huge, busy and mostly very loud tourist resort, Villajoyosa is the
opposite, it retains its origins of a small fishing port which continues to trade to this day.
The beaches are unspoilt by development, there are a wide variety of different
types of beaches depending on your mood –
quiet or active, there are fine wide sandy
beaches and small coves offering privacy
and wind-breaks. Villajoyosa does not
attract mass package holiday tourists so it is
very Spanish with few international tourists
but don’t let this stop you from visiting,
Villajoyosa is a taste of the real Spain and
the beaches are most definitely worth coming on holiday for.
Only in the summer do the Spanish flock
to Villajoyosa’s beaches and even then
because there are so many beaches you
can always find a quiet spot away from the
crowds. If you want some action and things
to do there are beach facilities such as football pitches with goals, volleyball nets, windsurfing hire, beach bars (chringuitos), cafes
and restaurants.
It almost goes without saying but we must
mention it – the weather and climate of
Villajoyosa is excellent. With over 300 days
of sunshine each year, there are numerous
opportunities to enjoy Villajoyosa’s beaches
– even in winter it can be very pleasant,
although too cold for a swim.

The Best Boat Trips In
Costa Blanca
Excursiones Maritimas Benidorm SL has
been offering the very best trips for 30 years to
Benidorm Island and other fantastic destinations such as The Harbour of Calpe or The
Historical Isle of Tabarca aboard their
“Golondrinas” (Pleasure Boats) Catamarans
and Aquascopes.
Benidorm Island give us the iconic backdrop that you can
see from the shoreline from the Levante beach all the way
down to La Cala it is apparently the missing chunk that’s
missing from the
Puig Campana mountain behind
Benidorm.
The Legend of Benidorm Island
The story (apparently true) starts with a giant called
Roldan who once lived on the mountain of Puig Campana.
Roldans wife Alda was blessed with amazing beauty; in fact
she was so beautiful that it angered the Gods, they were so
jealous of her beauty that they condemned her to die on a
summers evening at sunset. Roldan, who loved Alda very
much, was furious with the Gods and as sunset approached,
he could no longer control his anger so he kicked part of the
mountain straight into the sea so the sunlight would not disappear, thus giving Roldan and his wife Alda an extra couple
of minutes together before she died. Benidorm Island is said
to be the missing piece of the mountain that Roldan kicked
out.
Benidorm Island is one of the most recognized symbols of
the town and if you’ve never made the journey across the
bay to explore it, then you really should,
because it’s a great day out.
The boat leaves every hour from Benidorm
Habour and goes back and forth and Rincon
De Loix (In Spring & Summer) so you can
spend as little or as long as you like exploring
the island. The journey time takes around 20
minutes each way and costs 14€ for adults
and 11€ for children.
The island measures 260m by 350m rising
to 73m above sea level and is situated just
two and a half nautical miles from the coast, the island is
uninhabited and is a protected national park so you can
explore the island by walking the trails and see the flourish
of plants and natural wildlife. The island also has a bar and
restaurant so you can enjoy the fantastic view of the
Benidorm coastline while having a spot of lunch, maybe
some tapas with a nice cold beer or a cheeky ice cream.
The Yellow Submarine
Included in the price of your crossing is another trip on the
Yellow Submarine which takes you on a short ride round the
side of the island and you’ll see all sorts of marine life. The
vessel isn’t actually a submarine as it doesn’t go underwater,
to be more accurate it’s an ‘Aquascope ‘which provides you
with a fantastic underwater experience. You will climb
aboard and down into the hulled out vessel which is glass
lined, allowing you to see and enjoy the marine life in the
clear waters.
•Start or opening time: Departure every hour from 10am.
•Departures from the port (el Puerto) all year round and
from the boarding platform in the Rincón de Loix next to the
Hotel Nadal during the spring and summer season
Benidorm Island - Adults: 14, 00 €
Benidorm Island - Children: 11, 00 €
How do we get to the port?
To make the journey you must first find the port which is
between bays where the Poniente beach starts. You can
either jump in a taxi to the port (ask for ‘el puerto’) or if you’re
on the Levante side of town catch bus number 1, 4 or 10 to
15
the end of the Avda Mediterraneo, walk along the Walking
Street in the Old Town which comes out right by the port,
then right to the end of the pier and that’s where you catch
the boat.
The Historical Isle Of Tabarca
The “Historical Isle of Tabarca” is a small island off
Alicante’s coast, with a journey time of just two hours each
way, aboard the high speed catamaran style vessel, this is
another great day out especially as there’s a stop in Alicante
for shopping and sightseeing on the way! The day costs just
27.50€ for adults and 18€ for kids and the boat departs at
10.30am. Tabarca is the only inhabited island in the Region
of Valencia and is located opposite the city of Alicante, 11
nautical miles offshore and near the Santa Pola headland. It
is approximately 1,800 metres long and measures some 400
metres across at its widest point.
Calpe
The Rock of Ifach is more commonly known as “Calpe
Rock” is the main attraction to tourists together with the harbour which is famous for its freshly caught fish, Calpe Rock
has been a Natural Park since 1987 and if you are feeling
energetic and adventurous you can even climb to the summit. Calpe was traditionally an agricultural population, producing almonds and raisins the economy also relied on fishing and salt extraction. The trip takes about 1 hour and only
costs 22.50 for adults and 15 for kids, the boat leaves at
10.30am and the return journey from Calpe leaves at 4pm

Your weekly Horoscopes
Aries - Although it would Libra -

seem you’re more
than happy to
hand out advice to
others willy nilly,
you’re not too happy about
receiving it yourself are you?
Making new friends seems
high on your list this week, but
nurturing old ones is just as
important. Find a balance.
Taurus -
You may have
to put your personal life on the
back burner for
most of this week,
so that you can
focus all your energy on getting financial matters ship
shape. Once you’re more confident about finances, your
focus can change to ramping
up your love life.
_
Gemini -
It’s not one of
your best weeks
where the signing
of
documents,
contracts or agreements is concerned, but if you
cant get out of it and cant
delay it, look very carefully at
all small print before putting
your name on the dotted line.
Get impartial advice.

Cancer - If it’s at all possible to get away
for a few days, even
to get into the
countryside,
it
doesn’t have to be
abroad, it would do you the
world of good. Things are
moving at a snails pace and
are therefore causing irritation, so focusing on something more positive would be
a godsend.
a
Leo -
Financially, don’t be
afraid to take a
gamble this week,
although in your
case it would probably be more
called a calculated risk. It may
be enough to lift your good
fortune. By and large you can
take a lot of things for granted
now, but its still important to
check details.
b
Virgo -
Helping others
comes so naturally to you, that you
don’t even know
you’re doing it
most of the time.
Not that you’re looking for
anything, but the returns
you’ll get just by adhering to
this approach, could be
potentially enormous. Keep it
up.

A family matter
may remind you of
where your roots
actually lie this
week, so be prepared to offer
support to relatives and
younger family members.
Avoid discussions that have
no logical conclusion, as its
just a waste of time. You’re
under the spotlight at the
weekend.
d
Scorpio -
Try to
remember that its
in your power to
change things, so
speed things up a
bit and you’ll find you’re in a
good position to push forward. Getting your own way
should be easy for you if you
use your natural charm,
charisma and sensuality.
Piece of cake.
e
Sagittarius -
Your
good nature and
popularity
have
never been questioned, so when
someone you barely know
says something about you in a
slightly negative fashion,
don’t let it get to you. You
cant please all the people all
the time, so don’t waste your
time trying.
f
Capricorn -
Look at
g
life from the perspective of an
observer, as by the
time tomorrow
comes, you’ll need to clear the
decks for action. Getting
ahead in your chosen field is
now within your reach, so
trust your intuition and gut
feeling to steer you in the
right direction.
Aquarius -
It would
seem that it’s
clearly your intention to be noticed
this week, and that’s all well
and good, but just don’t
overdo it. If your common
sense has fleetingly left you,
do your best to get it back
pronto.
Keep impulsive
behaviour bridled and ride
h
out this crazy period of life.
Changes to
your professional
life are sudden and
unsettling at first,
but look at the new
options its unearthed. You
may be happier going in a
new direction. Someone from
your past may get in touch
and offer you yet another
option of work. You’re spoiled
for choice.

GAP LOVE
Six people whose partners are much younger than
they are reveal why being of different generations is
no barrier to romance. Marilyn's relationship with
husband William began when she was 45 and he
was 16 and was tested from the start by abuse from
friends and neighbours, while Edna (78) and Simon
(39) bonded over their mutual love of organ music.

COMMON
One-off drama from Jimmy McGovern, exploring
the possible consequences of the UK's Joint
Enterprise law, by which more than one person can
be charged with the same offence. Seventeen-yearold Johnjo gives his cousin Tony and some friends
a lift to a pizza parlour for food, unaware their real
intention is to `sort out' a local loudmouth. Things
soon get out of hand, however, and an innocent
bystander is fatally stabbed - and despite being in
the car all the time, Johnjo finds himself charged
with murder along with everyone else.

THE TENTH MEDIEVAL
MARKET IN LA NUCIA
4th, 5th and 6th July
La Nucia, a really pleasant village just a few
km from Benidorm and well-known for its big
flea market on Sunday mornings, held its first
Medieval Market in 2005 to celebrate its 300
years of existence, and enjoyed it so much that
it decided to have a Market every year. This year
it will be the tenth time and there will be a varied programme
with troubadours, a juggler on stilts who also plays with fire,
lies on a bed of really sharp nails and manages to get both
feet tucked behind her head; a story teller, street theatre,
medieval table games and a merry-go-round
for the children.
That all takes place next to and in between
some 70 craft stalls, carefully selected by
Amata, the organizing craft association, so
that nothing is imported, nothing is made in
craft factories - in fact, everything is made by
the people on the stall and there is a wide
range of different products. Something for
everyone - if not for the visitor in person, then
perhaps for a friend or relative. And quite a
few stallholders will be at work - Vito, a czech
blacksmith, on his anvil and showing pieces of
medieval armour, Aurélie carding and spinning
wool and even making felt, Tomás painting his
T-shirts (the ultimate designer wear, each one
is unique), Chema the bookbinder showing
how books were bound in medieval times,
Dave building his castles, and Tony with his
sturdy and decorative leather bags. The inner
man (and woman) has not been forgotten there are taverns, an Arab tea tent and stalls with preserved
food made using medieval recipes.
Two separate groups of musicians pass along the narrow
streets, followed by
various
medieval
characters - nobles,
beggars and soldiers - while Ly
walks on her stilts,
juggling clubs as
she goes and, at
night, turning into a
real faquir, tying herself into knots on a
bed
of
nails.
Buffoon Bertoldo tells funny stories that even foreigners with
no Spanish at their disposal can follow. There are medieval
table games such as Nine Men's Morris, quoits, table skittles
- meant for the young'uns but enjoyed just as much by their
parents, and for the very young there is a merry-go-round.
La Nucia Medieval Market (about 10 km from Benidorm)
opens on Friday 4, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July at about 6
in the late afternoon and keeps going till midnight or so; the
stalls are set up in the narrow streets to the back of the Town
Hall. If you don't know the way, just follow the white-on-green
arrows with "Mercado Medieval". There is ample room to
park your car nearby.
More information (in English) can be had by ringing 639
979 678 and you can look at Amata's web site
http://www.amata.es/LaNucia13.html for photographs of last
year's market.
U3A MARINA BAIXA DOG OF THE WEEK

OLIVE OIL
DONATION
As a result of the participation in the first La Nucia
International Day on the 30th
March when the U3A Marina
Baixa took along their successful Olde English Tea
Shoppe it was agreed some
of the proceeds would be
presented to the social
needs of the area. Rob
Parker enquired the best way
to make the donation from
this event and the social
services informed him they
were desperate for Olive Oil.
On Tuesday the 10th June
on behalf of the U3A Marina
Baixa Liz and Rob Parker
donated 73 litre bottles of
Olive Oil to the Bienestar
Social of La Nucia.
The
local
councillor
responsible for social issues
(Concejala de Bienestar

and the three ladies who
received this donation are
social workers of the

Wednesday morning local
people are provided with the
most essential and basic
needs, baby milk powder,
flour, rice, oil, beans, pasta,
milk and vegatables etc, and
the Olive Oil was a welcome
addition to the supplies
required.

Her only crime is to
have never been trained
to be a loved dog in a
home! Poor Terra was
only born in December
2012 and has been in
Benidorm pound since
May 2013. She came in
to us as an untrained pup
and now has no knowledge of life as a dog in a
home. You may think that
it would be too much of a
challenge to take her on
but this dog wants to
know love, security and a
home. Her brother has
been in a new home for 3 weeks and is
responding really well to training and will
stay, sit and walk beside you. Poor Terra is
nervous around people and that means she
has the sad possibility of living her whole life
in this pound, never knowing love and a
master. A bit of work, a bit of patience and a
beautiful dog will emerge who will trust and
enjoy being loved. She already knows the
volunteers and is good on the lead with us,
as she trusts us. Now she needs a home she
can believe in and learn how to be loved. For
more dogs please check out our facebook
page Benidorm Dog Pound needs your help
to raise funds to treat our dogs in need. We
need you to help us walk our dogs and
socialise them to be ready to move into a
new home. You can donate unwanted items
to our stall on a Saturday at El Cisne. Donate
funds
using
paypal
at
[email protected]. How about spending an hour or two with us walking the dogs
any day between Monday and Saturday
10am to 1pm. We love meeting you and so
do the dogs. Call Maria on 0034 677 37 33
96. If you can bring leads along then that
would be fantastic too. Another way to help
is to become a cyber buddy for a dog. We
have so many dogs that a lot don’t ever
leave the pound and end up dead one morning on a cold concrete floor. A cyber buddy
changes that and you can help from anywhere in the world. It’s easy to do and makes
a huge difference to a dog finding a new forever home. It takes just 2-3 minutes a day for
you!

The group leaders gave a
short informative talk on the
various crafts and encouraged anyone to come along

BUG BITES
With the arrival of the hottest months of the year comes the
arrival of plagues of mosquitoes. Only the females of the
species are responsible for the irritating bites that humans
and other mammals suffer: they use the protein in our blood
to harvest their eggs. These insects’ bites are not dangerous
in Spain, for they don’t carry or spread diseases, but are nevertheless a nuisance to deal with.
However, if you have a history of allergic reactions to mosquito bites, you may suffer from Skeeter Syndrome, a rare
allergy to mosquito saliva. Symptoms, other than the usual
bite, include:
•Red lumps on the bite area
•Swelling and large bumps on other parts of the body
•Bruising and blistering
•Angioedema and anaphylaxis (swelling of the face and
neck). This can be fatal due to airway obstruction and subsequent suffocation.
•Asthma
•Infection
To prevent allergic reactions, it is recommended you take
antihistamines. If you do begin to suffer from any of these
symptoms however, seek medical attention immediately
There are, of course, more serious bites to look out for. It
is important to be able to distinguish a mosquito bite from a
spider bite, for the latter can be more dangerous and require
medical treatment. Although there are few life-threatening
species in Spain, the following spiders may present some
health risks:
The bite of the BROWN SPIDER, also known as the “cor-
ner spider”, is considered one of the most dangerous spider
bites in Spain. This spider inhabits dark and humid places,
and is very commonly found in houses. It is not aggressive,
but the bites usually occur because it tends to hide away in
beds and in clothes. The bite may produce necrosis (death
of skin cells) and a small wound, and can be extremely
painful. More severe cases, though infrequent, have shown
symptoms such as a fever and joint pain, becoming especially dangerous in children and the elderly. Normally, all you
need to do is keep the wound clean with antiseptics, but if
you suffer from any severe symptoms, again, seek medical
attention immediately.
The MEDITERRANEAN BLACK WIDOW, usually found in
open places, like on plants and rocks, is a black with red
spots on its abdomen. This species’ venom is a powerful
neurotoxin, which has been known to kill small animals such
as rabbits. Its venom is particularly powerful during the
autumn, which, when bitten, produces a sharp pain which
slowly increases, along with numbness in the limbs. This can
be followed by spontaneous muscular contractions, especially in the abdomen, and laboured breathing. Once again,
any of these symptoms require immediate medical attention
Measuring between 1 and 3 cm, the WOLF SPIDER is the
largest European spider. Although menacing looking, its bite
is similar to that of a wasp: painful, but unworthy of medical
attention.
If in any doubt, always seek medical attention.

ZERO INFLATION:
PRICES FREEZE IN
STAGNANT SPAIN
Spain reported Friday a zero-percent annual inflation rate in June, even
as the European Central Bank fights
off a deflationary threat hanging over
the region.
Consumer prices were unchanged
in the year to June, held down by the
low cost of food, soft drinks and electricity, the National Statistics Institute
said in a preliminary estimate calculated in line with European Union-agreed
norms.
Weak domestic demand is keeping
a lid on prices in Spain, still struggling
with a 26-percent jobless rate despite
the economy emerging gingerly in mid2013 from a double-dip recession
sparked by a 2008 property crash.
On June 5th, the ECB rolled out an
unprecedented package of measures,
including negative interest rates for
banks that want to deposit excess
reserves with the central bank, in its
fight to head off the threat of deflation
in the euro area.
When consumer prices fall broadly
over a sustained period, people tend
to postpone purchases in the hope of
future price declines, a reaction that
brakes economic activity.
The phenomenon can degenerate
into a vicious downward spiral of
falling prices and declining economic
activity that is notoriously difficult to
reverse.
In April, the International Monetary
Fund said Spain was the only country
in the eurozone at "high risk" of deflation and warned the European Central
Bank to take action on the problem.

HAMMY SEEKS
SILVER LINING
Lewis Hamilton says he
is ‘gunning for Silverstone’
as he seeks to revitalise
his
faltering
World
Championship bid with victory at his home race this
weekend.
Top of the standings at
the start of May following
his triumph at the Spanish
GP, Hamilton has fallen a
disconcerting 29 points
behind team-mate, and
solitary title rival, Nico
Rosberg after a triple whammy of disappointments in
Monaco,
Canada
and
Austria.
The cumulative effect has
left Hamilton with no room
for error as he prepares for
the British GP at Silverstone,
a circuit where he last won in
2008 after being denied vic-
tory twelve months ago
when his Pirelli tyre spectacularly exploded. Rosberg
was the fortunate beneficiary

TOUGH
WEEK
Stan Wawrinka’s coach
admits his charge faces a
daunting task if he is to win
his first Wimbledon title.
The reigning Australian
Open champion was the
main victim of Saturday's
bad weather and now faces
potentially having to play five
matches in seven days.
Most singles matches were
completed after much of
Saturday was washed out
but Swiss star Wawrinka's
third-round clash with Denis
Istomin had already been
postponed along with the
clash between John Isner
and Feliciano Lopez - the
winners will meet in the next
round. Because there is no
play on middle Sunday at
Wimbledon, those matches
will now be played on
Monday, the fourth round on
Tuesday and quarter-finals
on Wednesday. Magnus
Norman, who has guided
Wawrinka into the world's
top three, said: "It's tough
but I know the organisation
and the referee are trying to
be fair to all the players
because they also cancelled
Lopez and Isner.
ROBBEN
GOOD
WEEK
ZANOTTI WINS PLAY-OFF
SAYS SORRY
Arjen Robben insists he
was fouled for the penalty
that led to Holland's lastgasp 2-1 win over Mexico,
but apologised for diving
earlier in the match.
The Dutch winger was
accused by Mexico boss
Miguel Herrera of committing three dives during
Sunday's tie in Fortaleza
that saw Holland go through
to the quarter-finals of the
World Cup.
However, Robben said in
quotes attributed to Dutch
television channel NOS:
"The one at the end was a
penalty, I was fouled. At the
same time, I have to apologise as in the first half I took
a dive and I really shouldn't
do that” Herrera said
Portuguese referee Pedro
Proenca should have taken
action against the Bayern
Munich winger.
He told a news conference: "Robben did three
dives and he should have
been cautioned. You should
caution a guy who is trying to
cheat, and then if Robben
did it again he would be sent
off."
Fabrizio Zanotti won a play-off at the fifth extra hole to
score a thrilling victory at the BMW International Open
in Germany.
The 31-year-old became the first Paraguayan to win on
the European Tour after edging out world No 2 Henrik
Stenson, Spain's Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Frenchman
Gregory Havret in a remarkable finish at Gut
Larchenhof in Cologne after all had finished at 19-under
in regulation time.
SERENA
WEEK
EARLY EXIT BADBURNOUT
Top seed Serena Williams
was beaten 1-6 6-3 6-4 by
French 25th seed Alize
Cornet in the third round at
Wimbledon. It was the 32year-old five-time former
champion's second defeat of
2014 to Cornet, the first
coming at the Dubai
Championships in February.
For the first time since 2006,
neither Serena nor Venus
Williams will appear in the
second
week
of
the
Wimbledon singles. World
No 1 Williams has won 17
Grand Slam titles, but she
now has departed before the
quarter-finals at four of the
past five. That run includes a
fourth-round loss at the
Australian Open in January
and a second-round loss at
the French Open in May. It is
Williams' earliest exit at the
All England Club since 2005,
when she also was beaten in
the third round.

PELE - SUAREZ VERDICT FAIR
Brazil legend Pele believes the punishment FIFA handed out to Luis
Suarez following his bite on Giorgio
Chiellini is a fair and proportionate one.
Suarez was banned from all footballrelated activity for four months following the incident in the 79th minute of
Uruguay’s World Cup Group D match
with Italy in Natal last Tuesday. And
Pele believes the ban, which was
accompanied by a fine of £66,000 for
the Liverpool striker, sends a strong
message that this type of behaviour will
not be tolerated on a football pitch. “It’s
something unprecedented,” the threetime World Cup winner said. Pele has
told Sky Sports News that he thinks the
ban given to Luis Suarez by FIFA was
right.
“Of course some people react badly
when something has happened to
them but it’s always been a headbutt,
an elbow or a kick from a player when
fighting for the ball. “But a bite. This is
the first time that something like this
has happened in the World Cup. Even
for us who were on the pitch this is
something that was unprecedented. “I
think the decision from FIFA is a good
one and the right one because they
have to make an example. “If they
don’t, this could spread. This shouldn’t
be done by anyone or copied by anyone.

COSTA RICA HANG ON
Costa Rica and Greece played 120 minutes to a 1-1 deadlock, and for the second
time in four matches, a Round of 16 game
was decided by penalty kicks. The first half
was a lackluster affair, with both sides having a hard time putting together good
sequences. If anything, the more defensiveminded Greeks looked more dangerous on
the offensive end than the Ticos. In the
52nd minute, Bryan Ruiz, the captain of the
Tico team and its most famous player, took
a cross and calmly rolled it into the corner of
the net. In the 65th minute, defender Oscar
Duarte earned a second yellow card and
got himself kicked out of the game, leaving
Costa Rica a man down for the rest of the
match. The Costa Rican keeper, Keylor
Navas, made a series of amazing saves,
especially in the second half, but in the first
minute of stoppage time, Sokratis
Papastathopoulos converted on a rebound
of yet another Navas save, to tie the game
at 1. The Greeks owned the overtime period, pressing the Ticos throughout. Their
physical play had a number of the Costa
Ricans, even Navas, nursing injuries, and
Konstantinos Mitroglou very nearly had the
game winner in the stoppage for overtime.
Despite being the more exhausted side, the
Ticos nailed all five of their penalty kicks,
while Navas made a picture-perfect save on
Theofanis Gekas' kick, diving to his left for
the stop.

So it was cause for optimism, but only of a muted sort, that
Mexico was able to dominate the early going, creating the
best opportunities in the first 25 minutes. The temperature in
Fortaleza was in the high 80s, and the Proenca called breaks
in each half so that the players could drink water and cool off

probably should have been awarded penalty kicks, one in

LATE WORLD
CUP DRAMA
www.vistacostablanca.com - 1st July - 7th July
It was a cruel way to lose. And it
almost happened twice. Mexico led the
heavily favored Netherlands team, 1-0,
with three minutes left in the World Cup
Round of 16 match, but two goals in
the last nine minutes doomed El Tri
and sent the Dutch to the quarterfinals.
A goal in extra time by Greece also
doomed Costa Rica, but to a less drastic fate: 30 minutes of extra time and
the added drama of a penalty kick
shootout. They won 1-1 (5-3) and
became the first Central American
team to reach the quarterfinals at a
World Cup. After a beautiful Giovanni
dos Santos goal and another eye-popping performance by Mexican keeper,
Memo Ochoa, Wesley Sneijder finally
broke through for the Netherlands from
the top of the penalty area in the 87th
minute, he boomed the ball into the
left-hand corner, tying the game. It had
been that way for much of the second
half, as the Mexicans were flagging
and the Dutch were just getting
warmed up. The Portuguese referee,
Pedro Proenca, who blew a number of
calls during the match, then called for 6
minutes of injury time—far more than
seemed appropriate and more than
during the first half, when a Mexican
player, defender Hector Moreno, had to
be carted off the field. Two minutes into
the extra time, Mexico’s most veteran
player, Rafa Marquez, made a big-time
blunder, fouling Arjen Robben and setting up Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s gamewinning penalty kick. Throughout the
Cup, Holland have started games slowly, falling behind Spain 1-0, and heading into halftime tied with all three of
their previous opponents—Spain (1-1),
Australia (1-1) and Chile (0-0). But
whether it’s conditioning or being better
able to pace their play, the Dutch have
done the bulk of their offensive damage
in the second half (8 goals to, 1
against).
