Opening speech: Nicholas Sheffield (Forum Chair)

- Not a Financial ‘Services’ Forum, but a Financial ‘Issues’ Forum
- Broad focus: macro (strategic), regulatory and micro issues
- Aims & goals for the year (3 networking events, 4 discussion events, with conclusions)
- Target: contribution to EU Chamber Position paper (targeting September 2014)
Keynote speaker: Catherine Raines (Director General, UKTI)
- General introduction (ex-AstraZeneca, previously in Shanghai)
- Reinforcing & reinvigorating UKTI focus on helping British businesses in China
- Renewed focus on connecting with UK businesses in China & initiating more regular
dialogue between HMG and the private sector

- Key themes revolve around: RMB Internationalisation, legal regulation, re-insurance
(CRIC), Chinese asset management diversification into the UK, UK asset management in

China, working with the Beijing municipality, issues for the next China UK-Financial and
Economic dialogue, Financial Technology, Islamic finance (PRC-Arabian world),
infrastructure & 3rd world partnerships, Chinese FDI into the UK.

- Market update
- Focussed on understanding what PRC leadership is thinking
- Not focussed on short-term factors (GDP fluctuation, stock market indices)
- Principal focus on stability, employment, long-term trajectory

- Initial results in advance of full publication (“hot-off-the-press”)
Speeches were followed by discussion of key themes over dinner
Conclusions:

A very successful evening with valuable and detailed feedback from members
A clear indication that major issues lie at the micro/regulatory level, with broader,
strategic areas being of interest, but not of key importance to members’ daily operations
Some industries (banking, legal) tend to ‘hog the limelight’ at the expense of less highprofile, but nevertheless systemically important sectors, such as insurance
Next steps / follow-up:
