Access Certificate in English Language Teaching (ACE) is a qualification developing language awareness and
communication skills, as well as professional teaching skills.
The award has been jointly developed with the world-renowned Department of Language and Literary Studies in
Education at the University of Manchester in the UK. It is designed for teachers starting their career in English
language teaching, as well as for experienced English language teachers wishing to upgrade their skills.
It is supported by learning materials covering each module in detail, which can be used as a stand-alone course or
alongside a structured programme of teaching. The Department of English Language and Literature has designed
an intensive structured programme preparing the candidates for ACE award. It combines a theory component
covering the principal issues of language teaching methodology with teaching practice, thus guiding the candidate
towards the full qualification.
More information about ACE to be found at www.cityandguilds.cz.

City & Guilds Awards Ceremony British Embassy
Moscow, Russia
On 28 February a City & Guilds Awards Ceremony was held at the British Embassy
in Moscow. We were delighted that the Ambassador had agreed to be our
distinguished guest. Other distinguished guests included Andrew Sheridan, British
Council, Moscow, Tony Thompson KPMG, Elena Nemirovskaya MBE, Director of
Moscow School of Political Studies.
150 people attended the event from many of our
centres across Russia. Our furthest guests
travelled for over 3 days by train just to get to
Moscow and our event. Awards were given to a
selection of 40 students from these centres with
the youngest being 8 years old and the oldest
being over 50. Other awards were also given to
the most successful centres in Russia. The
event started with a champagne and canapes
reception in the splendid Atrium to the Embassy
and was followed by the formal presentation
ceremony.
Guests were first given a brief history of City &
Guilds and a resume of our activities in Russia
by Andrew Bayley, emphasising our commitment
to the support structure and network of centres
that has been built across Russia. The evidence
of the support system available and the
Ambassador handing certificate to 8 year old student
assistance freely given by consultants and
centres alike, was underlined in the next report
by Olga Panichkina, a consultant based in
Ulyianovsk.

Introduction to Linguistic Gymnasia №6 in Penza,
Russia
Penza is a green cosy town in the centre of Russia where most of the students are
strongly aware of the importance of learning English and the value of City & Guilds
certificates.
In Penza, City & Guilds approved
regional examination centre operates
from Linguistic Gymnasia №6, which has longstanding tradition in teaching foreign
languages. However we always welcome the
opportunity to share our knowledge with
students from other schools of the city and
region and we are happy to help them gain
success at these exams. Since 1999 students
from more than 20 schools have successfully
obtained their City & Guilds certificates from our
centre.
The exam, which our students sit in April is a
real holiday in our centre. The students feel
confident and are dressed up a bit for the
occasion.
Those who pass the exam level by level are
looking forward to meeting the members of the
examination board again like old friends and
never fail to enjoy their beautiful English and
sparkling humour.
In April 2006 our candidates tried International
Spoken ESOL and found it a real piece of cake.
We are also proud of our very low failure rate.
Most of the students, who take the exam gain
the experience of passing exams and extend
their knowledge in English attending courses in
the centre. Highly professional teachers do their
Now we are busy looking for the ways to 'spread the
City & Guilds bug' in Penza Region and to broaden the
range of exams offered in our centre.
