Study Guide for Test
Sample Constructed Response Questions. You will see four to six of these questions on the test. For
each question, you will be required to write response which answers the question(s) completely and
thoroughly. Be prepared to use quotes for the questions you choose to answer to support your
response. ( You will have a choice of answering two out of the four or six on the test)
1) Explain how Montag changes over the course of the book. Use quotes from the book to show
how he changes.
2) Explain how Faber is considered an Archetype. What archetype is he and how to you know? Use
quotes from the book to support your answer.
3) There are many themes that are developed throughout Fahrenheit 451. Choose one and explain,
using quotes, how Bradbury develops this theme through the plot, characters, setting, etc.
(a) Repression of free thought through censorship
(b) Proper education that values books
(c) The loss of culture and history
(d) The constant demand to satisfy immediate visual and sensory appetites
(e) The value of authentic human interaction
(f) The value of the natural world
(g) Our choice to use, misuse, or discard books
4) Describe how Mildred and Clarisse are foils for one another. Explain how each character, even
though very different from one another, is a force of change for Montag. Use quotes to support
your answer.
5) Bradbury’s book contains many truths about our world. What are two truths he reveals about
the world he lived in that are also applicable today? Use quotes from the book to show how
these truths are revealed to the readers.
6) There are many biblical references in relation to Montag. Choose two biblical references
Bradbury uses in relation to Montag and his behavior and/or character. Explain why these
biblical references are appropriate for Montag’s character.
7) Explain the “queen bee” analogy with regards to Faber and Montag. How is this analogy
appropriate for what Montag and Faber are doing? Use quotes from the book to support your
answer.
8) Faber tells Montag that people who are having “fun” are reluctant to become “rebels”. Explain
why this is true in the society Montag lives in and how it also applies to our world today.
9) Discuss the “anti-social” behavior in Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. What is considered “anti-social”
behavior? What is considered “normal” behavior? Use quotes to support your answer. Explain
how the difference between “anti-social” and “normal” behavior is considered ironic in terms of
our world.
10) There are many symbols used in Fahrenheit 451. One of the main symbols is the “Phoenix”.
Explain the use of this symbol in the book. What does the Phoenix symbolize and why? Do you
think it is an appropriate symbol for today as well? Why or why not? Use quotes to support your
answer.
11) Bradbury uses many allusions throughout Fahrenheit 451. Choose two allusions that Bradbury
used and explain why he uses them in the book. What connection is the reader to make with the
allusion and the plot of Fahrenheit 451? (What does the allusion help to explain in the
book?)Use quotes to support your answer.

1. Look over your study guides from each section of the book. Pay attention to symbols, analogies,
characterization, and themes.
2. Look over your notes from each section. Read through the allusions, think about the things we
discussed in class—Montag’s journey, the “Christ” figure, etc. You need to make sure you
understand the definitions of the following:

d. Allegory
e. Phoenix
f. Character traits of Montag, Clarisse, Mildred
g. paradox
You need to understand the following quotes/ some of them have questions with them.
“When I leave, burn the spread of this bed that I touched.” Character trait of Montag?
“I’m not worried,” said Mrs. Phelps, “I’ll let Pete do all the worrying. Not me. I’m not
worried.” Repetition gives reader a sense of What?
“The real reason, hidden underneath, might be they didn’t want people sitting like that,
doing nothing, rocking, talking.” What does this say about the society?
“That’s the good part of dying, when you’ve got nothing to lose, you run any risk you
want,” What theme does this support?
In the quote, “So now do you see why books are hated and feared? They show
the pores in the face of life,” What theme is explored in this quote?
The quote, “He burnt the bedroom walls and the cosmetics chest because he wanted to change everything,” what
does this foreshadow?
”The other men helped, Montag helped,… putting out the fire together,”(154), This shows what message?
Based on the quote, “He stood outside the talking house in the shadows, thinking he might even tap on their door
and whisper, ‘Let me come in. I won’t say anything, I just want to listen.” This shows Guy as what kind of
character?
What does Granger mean by,”’ I am Plato’s Republic.’”(page 151)?
The following quote: “’ I’m still crazy. The rain feels good. I love to walk in it’” (pg 21), shows one of Clarisse’s
character traits to be
