across Dudley borough’s parks and green spaces
Welcome
to the new green spaces for health booklet.
This book is packed full of the free led and self-guided
walks, fitness sessions, activities and health classes that
take place in our borough’s parks and green spaces.
We offer an inclusive programme of activities with something to suit
all ages and abilities.
The Dudley Walking Festival, which runs from
27 April to 5 May and includes the annual Dudley
Borough Trail, is featured in this booklet.
Unless otherwise stated all the sessions are free of charge and
there is no need to pre-book. Please note that there may be a
small parking charge at some of the locations.
Please wear appropriate clothing for all our sessions. Boots are
recommended for walks, as paths can be very muddy. Walkers
who are new to the programme should arrive early to
complete a brief induction from the walk leader.

Minibeast safari
Sunday 14 April
10.30am - 12 noon
The ranger will lead you on a safari hunt around Priory Park to discover
the smaller creatures living in the park.

A walk through time
Wednesday 17 April
6.15pm meet for 6.30pm start
Starting in the Himley Hall courtyard this walk looks at the natural and man
made landscapes, discovering the roots dating back to the Carboniferous
Period some 310 million years ago.
Fens Pools canal circular walk
Led by Graham Worton, keeper of geology at Dudley Council, the walk
follows the valley to the last working pit of the South Staffordshire Coalfield
and returns to Himley via woodland.
Join this six-mile (10km) walk around beautiful canals and green spaces.
The walk includes slopes and steps. Booking is essential.
These activities must be pre-booked. Contact Himley Hall reception on

Pond dipping

Wildflower wander
Sunday 28 April
Every year mother nature covers Saltwells Wood with bluebells. Come and
see if they are out for this spring time walk.

The Leasowes trail
Monday 29 April • 10am to 11.30am
This walk will take you over footpaths and varying terrain to take in the
views. Meet at The Leasowes car park at 9.45am for a prompt start.

Walking festival 2013

Charity bluebell walk
Saturday 27 April
Join the Friends of Cotwall End Valley for this charity walk, raising money
for the Georgina unit at Russells Hall Hospital. A small donation for the
charity is required to join the walk, which has been timed to coincide with
the flowering of the bluebells in the valley. Some paths may be muddy
and the walk includes steep slopes and some steps and is not suitable
for pushchairs. Walking boots are recommended.
Meet on Brockswood Animal Sanctuary car park, accessed from
Catholic Lane, near to its junction with Cotwall End Road, Sedgley.

Crooked House walk
Monday 29 April
A five mile moderate to strenuous walk involving a 10-minute bus ride to
The Straits. The walk goes into Baggeridge Country Park along disused
railway lines and passed the Crooked House then on through Gornal
Wood’s open spaces to end at Spills Meadow for a bus ride back to
Sedgley. Lunch stop will be at the Fountain pub.

Bat walk
Saturday 11 May • 8.30pm to 10.30pm
Use bat detectors to find bats at Saltwells Nature Reserve. Book early to
avoid disappointment.
Now in its 33rd year, the Dudley Trail returns. It is one of the Midlands largest
urban walking events with over 2,000 participants regularly entering. The 26 and
the 18 mile walks are the longest and most exhilarating. The 6, 9, and 12 mile
walks are beautiful but slightly less strenuous.

Spring flower walk

Join the warden for a stroll across The Leasowes looking for signs of
spring. Catch the scent of bluebells and wild garlic in the woods and
admire the beauty of celandine and wood anemones on the route.

Midsummer walk in the park

A guided walk around Himley Hall and Park estate exploring some of
its fascinating history including the icehouse, the dogs’ cemetery and
the ancient woodland with the opportunity to visit the Earl of Dudley’s
memory garden at the end of the walk.
Explore The Leasowes and learn about the history and wildlife of this beautiful
Grade 1 listed landscape. The walk will also take in the new Coombeswood
Nature Reserve, which gives an opportunity to learn about the geology and
wildlife of this fascinating area. Meet at the wardens’ base at 9.45am for a

A brisk Thursday morning walk through the scenic landscapes of Lutley and
Uffmoor. Walkers follow the undulating terrain enjoying distant views and local
wildlife. Routes vary but all trails involve climbing over stiles and negotiating
stretches of seasonal ground. Sensible footwear and clothing and a drink of
water is essential.

Extended monthly and bimonthly walks
Extended monthly circular walk to The Nimmings at Clent Hills,
National Trust site.
A circular fitness walk of moderate intensity on the first Thursday of each
month. There is a stop of 30 minutes at Nimmings for lunch and to take in
distant views - bring your own lunch or purchase from the Nimmings café.
This walk lasts just under three hours and includes rough ground, a
number of stiles and a fairly steep final approach to Nimmings. Walkers
should bring a drink.

On the last Thursday of alternate months for walkers who wish to
push themselves a little bit further, this group also runs extended, bimonthly
fitness walks. All walks involve stiles and rough, sometimes wet and muddy
ground and will last up to three hours. Walkers should bring a drink.

Walton Hill spectacular

An invigorating and inspiring walk offering truly panoramic views from Clent
and Walton Hills. The trail passes by St Kenelm’s Church and Walton Pool.
Meet at Nimmings car park, Hagley Wood Lane B62 8QF. Please note
there is a small charge for parking, although free parking is available on the

from many vantage points along the way, including those at Foxcote,

Extended monthly walks at The Leasowes
For walkers who want more of a challenge, The Leasowes walking group
offers longer walks from various venues. These walks take place on the
first Monday of the month and are in addition to the weekly walks. Unless
otherwise stated, all walks start at 10am (meet at 9.50am for registration)
at The Leasowes car park, off Mucklow Hill, Halesowen, B62 8QF and
take up to 2½ hours.
Please note that changes may be made if weather is inclement.

5 August
A scenic circular route taking in views of Halesowen
Abbey and the medieval fish ponds, and passing
the site of the entrance to the disused Lapal tunnel.
A low to moderate intensity walk of about four miles
taking approximately two hours with stiles.

Waseley Hills Country Park
6 May
Bring binoculars and see the planes taking off from Birmingham
International Airport. This three mile walk is of moderate intensity and will
take up to two hours. Meet at the car park at Waseley Hill Car Park
B45 9AT. Parking fee £1.50 all day.
Severn Valley Country Park, Alveley
3 June
A gentle riverside walk of approximately five miles. There will be a small
fee for the coach. Advanced booking is essential. Refreshments, or buffet
lunch (£6), will be available. Buffet lunch must be ordered and paid for in
advance. Meet at The Leasowes car park B62 8QF. We will arrive at the
Severn Valley car park at 10.30am where we will walk from.
Walk lasts approximately two hours.

This is a low intensity walk with refreshments available at café.

A circular walk taking in The Leasowes,
Coombswood, Gorsty Hill and Dudley number
2 canal with views of Hawne Basin and a small
number of stiles. This walk is about four miles

Priory Park
Priory Park gardening group
Every Saturday from 11am to 1pm
Come and join our gardening and maintenance volunteers and help look after
Priory Park. Led by the park ranger, this weekly group is a great opportunity
to meet new people, get some fresh air and learn some new skills. The
session is suitable for adults and children but a responsible adult must
accompany children aged under 16.
Tennis
Every Wednesday from 3.45pm to 4.30pm
Come and learn tennis from a fully qualified Lawn and Tennis Association
coach. Equipment provided, no need to book. There is a small fee of
£1 per session. Ideal for ages five upwards.
Breeze bike rides
26 April, 24 May, 28 June, 19 July, 30 August and
27 September at 10.30am
Brought to you by British Cycling, Breeze is all about fun, free, informal
bike rides for women, led by women. To book or for more information on

A walk in the park

park ranger taking in Castle Woods and Wren’s Nest Nature Reserve.

To celebrate the Eden project’s Big Lunch we will once again be holding
a picnic in Priory Park. Bring your lunch, your friends, neighbours, family
and of course a picnic rug. There will be a bouncy castle, face painting,
arts and crafts, giant board games and many other activities.

Bikeability is cycling proficiency for the 21st century. Level one teaches
basic skills and bicycle handling and is covered entirely in a traffic free

From Cradley Heath bus station we will follow Mousesweet Brook through
Mushroom Green, onto Cobbs Engine House and continue climbing up

Wheatsheaf.
Sandwell Valley – Forge Mill Lake
Friday 13 September
A bus to Dudley Port for a train to Hamstead and an easy walk through
the nature reserves and onto Sandwell Valley trails. Lunch stop is at The
Crown and Cushion before visiting Dartmouth Park, Queen’s Square and the
Public Art Gallery, West Bromwich - before a short bus ride back to Dudley.

The Action Heart cardiac rehabilitation centre
provides a programme of weekly health walks

AW Surgery walks
Route planning
These walks are aimed at patients of Albion House and Withymoor
surgeries in Brierley Hill but everyone is welcome to join them. The
walks start at different venues each week and offer participants the
chance to experience some of the best views of the area. They include
either nature reserves or canal walks and progression walks with
provision for new walkers on slightly shorter routes if necessary.
There are two route planning websites that can help you to plan a walk,
each providing a slightly different type of service.

support you with this. These include help with planning your own walk,
