WALSH: Walsh (2-5, 2-5) snapped a fivegame losing streak with a 35-13 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over
rival Malone University last Saturday night at
Fawcett Stadium. The win was Walsh’s sixth
straight over their crosstown rival and keeps
the Bankert/Gallagher Trophy at Walsh.
MOTOR CITY: Walsh heads to Detroit,
Michigan for their first GLIAC meeting with
Wayne State University (3-4, 2-4) at Tom
Adams Field on Saturday at noon.
CAVS CONTROL: Walsh played perhaps its
finest game of the season in halting a fivegame skid and defeating rival Malone. The
Cavs controlled the line of scrimmage on both
sides of the ball and completely dominated the
Pioneers.
QUARTER NUMBER TWO: Despite holding
the football for over 10 minutes in the first
period, the Cavs could not dent the
scoreboard. The second period would see
Walsh control the football for 11:45, and score
21 points to boot. Jerald Robinson caught two
TD passes and Justin Keith scored from oneyard out as Walsh built a 21-0 halftime lead.
ROBINSON STRIKES: Robinson caught
touchdown passes of 27 and 33 yards. Kempe
connected with Jerald for the first strike, 1:20
into the quarter. After Keith scored with 1:50
left in the half, Walsh forced a quick three-and
-out and scored again when wide receiver
Blake Williams threw a perfect pass to
Robinson on an option play with six seconds
left to give Walsh the three-score halftime
lead.
QUICK STRIKE: CJ Chatman then stunned
Malone when he returned the second half kick
-off 100 plus yards for a TD. The score gave
Walsh 21 points in a span of 2:05 dating back
to the end of the first half.
GORDON GETS NUMBER ONE: Freshman
Kalvin Gordon then scored his first collegiate
touchdown to cap the scoring. Gordon set his
TD scamper up with a 44-yard run.
GROUND GAME SETS TONE: Walsh rushed
for 272 yards, averaging 4.9 yards per rush.
Aaron Male led the charge with 82 yards,
Gordon tallied 78, Keith 62 and Luke Lloyd
41.
DEFENSE FOILS RUN, AND PASS: Walsh’s
defense limited Malone to 80 yards on the
ground and 142 through the air. The Cavs
limited Malone to 11 first downs and 51 plays
from scrimmage. Walsh ran 78 plays, totaled
24 first downs and held the ball 37 minutes.
DEFENSIVE STANDOUTS: The Cavs
recorded four sacks and 11 tackles for a loss,
led by Cameron Trudell’s eight tackles and
three for a loss. Braily Blair had eight tackles
and Chad Phillis had seven tackles, two sacks
and 2.5 tackles for a loss.
KEMPE REBOUNDS: After struggling in his
first start against Findlay, Paul Kempe made
the most of his second start against Malone.
Kempe completed 14 of 22 passes for 130
yards and one TD and did a superb job of
managing the game.
GLIAC LEADERS: Jamaris Brown is first in
kick return average (28.3), ninth with two
interceptions and 10th in pass break-ups with
five. Cameron Trudell is 10th in tackles (55).
Tim Carter is third in punting (38.3).
Brody Tonn is ninth in passing yards per
game (208.6) and is tied for eighth in TD
passes with eight.

GLIAC
POLL:
In the
preseason GLIAC Poll Walsh tied with No. 4
Lake Erie but is listed fifth as ties were broken
using the 2013 order of finish. Wayne State
was picked sixth in the North Division.

SERIES: This is the first meeting between the
two teams.
Michael Johnson led all receivers with 116
yards.
HOW THEY CONNECT: Walsh and Wayne
State have a connection through former
Walsh Football Coach Jim Dennison. Wayne
State Head Coach Paul Winters was a
running back for Dennison at the University of
Akron, and gained 1,298 yards in 1979.
Wayne State Athletic Director Rob Fournier
was the assistant to Dennison at Akron.
Nores Fradi had a game-high 3.5 tackles for a
loss as did Anthony DeDamos to pace the
Warrior defense. Brandon Lee totaled a gamebest nine tackles (6-3), which included two for
a loss.
And, Fournier and Jim Clark, Walsh’s SID and
play-by-play man, were broadcast partners for
Akron Football in 1978 and 1980.
Wayne State defensive back Ron Brant’s dad,
Ron, was a running back for Dennison at
Akron from 1981-84.
WAYNE STATE: Wayne State suffered its
third consecutive setback, 33-30, on a field
goal in the final 30 seconds at Northern
Michigan University last Saturday afternoon in
the Superior Dome.
The Warriors led 7-3 after one quarter, 20-10
at halftime, but trailed 24-23 after three
quarters.
WSU took a 30-27 lead with 6:18 to play when
Michael Johnson scored on a nine-yard pass
on a third-and-seven play. A previous catch
for 30 yards put Johnson over the 100-yard
receiving mark for the second time this
season.
NMU then knotted the game at 30 on a 26yard field goal, which was set-up by an 84yard kickoff return.
Wayne State drove into NMU territory, but a
fake punt on fourth down was incomplete
leading to a 12-play Wildcat drive concluding
with the game-winning 24-yard field goal.
WSU's second down pass attempt went off
the hands of a Warrior receiver into the hands
of an NMU linebacker to end any hopes of a
game-winning drive.
Desmond Martin finished with a game-high
135 yards and a touchdown.
Carl Roscoe was 14-of-30 for 241 yards and
two touchdowns along with two interceptions.
GLIAC LEADERS: Desmond Martin is second
in rushing average per game at 125.4, and
with nine touchdowns. He is fifth in scoring
with 55 points. Martin had rushed for 100
yards in a single game four times, with a
season-high 235 yards in WSU’s 41-31 win
over Carson-Newman. He also rushed for 200
yards in their GLIAC win over Malone.
Quarterback Carl Roscoe is 10th in passing
yards per game with 169.1.
Wide receiver Michael Johnson is eighth in
receiving yards per game (71.6) and 10th with
31 receptions. He has caught at least four
passes in six of seven games, and caught six
each vs. Malone and Grand Valley.
Place kicking specialist Paul Graham is a
conference best 9-9 in field goal attempts and
23-23 in extra points. He is eighth in scoring
with 50 points.
The WSU return game has Val Showers sixth
in kick-off returns (26.7) and Ron Brant third in
punt returns (7.9).
Gerren DuHart is second in pass break-ups
(8) and Jamiil Williams is fifth (6).

DID YOU KNOW: Ted Karras’ father, Ted
Karras Sr., was a member of the 1963 NFL
champion Chicago Bears and played pro
football from 1958-1966. He played with the
Steelers (1958-59), Bears (1960-64), Lions
(1965) and Rams (1966). Ted’s uncle’s, Alex
Karras, played his entire career with the Lions
(1958-70), and Lou Karras played with the
Redskins (1950-52). Ted, Jr., played one year
in the NFL, with the Redskins (1987).

WINNING
The 2012 season was Karras’ fifth winning season
in six years, as his Knights earned the program's first NAIA
National Championship. Marian won its second consecutive MidStates Football Association Mideast League championship and
finished the regular season 8-1 and 12-1 overall. Marian defeated
Morningside College 30-27 in overtime in the title game. His 2012
team placed 26 players on the All-MSFA Team, with eight earning
first team accolades. Karras earned AFCA NAIA Region ll Coach
of the Year honors for the second straight season. The Knights
spent five weeks as the top ranked team in the NAIA, and were
ranked in the top ten the entire season. In the final poll released
December 18, the Knights were No. 1.
In 2011, Karras directed Marian to its first MSFA Mideast
League championship after its first perfect 10-0 regular season
and was named MSFA Mideast Coach of the Year. Marian started
the season ranked sixth and spent five weeks, until the national
semifinals, as the nation's No. 1-ranked team. The team finished
the season 12-1 and closed the year as the third-ranked team in
the NAIA.
At Marian, 51 Knights earned All-MSFA Mideast League
honors, a school record, with 22 of those players earning first
team honors. He also earned American Football Monthly NAIA
National Coach of the Year honors. Assistant Coach Martin
Mathis was named MSFA Mideast League Assistant Coach of the
Year as well. He also coached the 2011 MSFA MEL Player of the
Year in Dustin Craig, who also was named the program's second
AFCA-NAIA First Team All-American.
In 2010, Marian produced the program's third straight winning season, earned their first-ever 10-win season, and garnered their first-ever top 10 ranking in the NAIA Football Coaches' Poll. The culmination of the greatest season in the program's
history came on November 14, 2010 when Marian University
was selected to play in the NAIA Football Championship Series
for the first time in school history. The Knights, ranked 11th at
the time, defeated eighth-ranked Ottawa University by a 35-20
score to earn their first-ever postseason victory. MU fell to eventual national champion Carroll College after a trip to the mountains in Helena, Montana. They finished the 2010-11 year as the
sixth-ranked team in the nation.
The 2009 season was the program's second straight winning
season as it earned a 6-5 record. Marian defeated the University
of St. Francis (Ill.) on a last-second field goal to earn its first-ever
season-opening win. The Knights also opened a new stadium,
St. Vincent Health Field, with a 34-16 win over Grand View,
which finished the season ranked in the top
25. The season culminated with the program's first-ever AFCANAIA All-America selection in the graduated

Karras guided the Knights to their first-ever winning season at 7-4 in just
the second season of the programs existence. The Knights also earned
votes in the NAIA Top 25 for the first time and defeated 25th-ranked
McKendree, 28-21, on the road for their first-ever road win and their firstever win over a ranked opponent.
STARTING BLOCKS
The inaugural season yielded the team's firstever victory, an MSFA All-Mideast second team selection, an MSFA AllAcademic team selection, and four MSFA All-Mideast honorable mentions.
The Knights finished 1-9 in their first-ever season.
INDIANA
A northwest Indiana native, Karras came to Marian University
after three seasons at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Under his
tutelage, the Fighting Engineer program was revitalized with shocking
victories over DePauw University, Washington University and the program's
first victory at Rhodes College in Memphis since 1971. He posted a pair
of .500 (5-5) records in two of his first three seasons, the first since 1995.
During his time at RHIT, his players excelled in both football and
academics. He had two Academic All-Americans, 13 All-Conference performers, and the first All-American defensive lineman in
school history. He also coached the SCAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2004. Karras went 14-16 with RHIT, the best three-year
record of any coach, and was named one of the "10 Hottest Coaches in Division III" by American Football Monthly.
For four years prior to RHIT, Karras was the offensive coordinator at MSFA foe St. Xavier University, and was part of an MSFA
Midwest League championship and NAIA playoff-qualifier in 2002.
REBUILDING
Prior to SXU, Karras served as the head coach at Andrean High School in Gary, Ind., from 1996-98. Karras rebuilt
a program that had never won a regional championship. During his tenure, Andrean won three sectional and two regional
championships and earned a berth in the state championship game. Karras amassed a 30-10 overall record and was named the
Indiana Football Coaches' Association Regional Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1998.
He also served as defensive line coach at St. Francis College from 1995-96 and defensive coordinator at Lake Forest College from
1993-95. Karras served as a defensive line graduate assistant at Northern Illinois University in 1992-93 and as a graduate assistant at
the University of Minnesota from 1991-92. His coaching experience began as a defensive line coach for Kankakee Valley High School
in 1989.
NORTHWESTERN
Karras was a four-year starter at Northwestern University
from 1983-87 and earned his bachelor of science from Northwestern in 1987. His
playing career continued as he signed with the Washington Redskins as a free agent
and spent one season with the Redskins.
RICH BLOODLINE
Coach Karras' bloodline is football-rich; his father, Ted Sr.,
played for the George Halas-led Chicago Bears from 1960-64. His uncle, the late
Alex Karras, played 13 seasons with the Detroit Lions (1958-71) and earned All-Big
Ten honors at the University of Iowa.
FAMILY
Karras and his wife, Jennifer, have two children, Taylor, a senior honors
student at Indianapolis Cathedral, and Teddy, who is a junior offensive lineman at the
University of Illinois. Teddy is the seventh member of the Karras family to play
football in the Big Ten Conference.
