The Community says NO!
The atmosphere on Saturday 31 May at Skansdam School where
more than 300 concerned residents of Henley, Highbury and
Daleside, including ward councillors Parsonson, Jones and Hack,
gathered to protest the proposed 600 ton per day dolomite smelter
was festive but the intention was serious: The smelter must not
happen.
It was unseasonably hot so the water bottles, courtesy of
OWLAG, represented by Sam Blake and a few of the girls, were
very welcome. Surgical masks, symbolising the state of the air if this
smelter should go ahead, were supplied. There were plenty of
marshall's vests handed out as this was a requirement of the police
in attendance.
Stan Wallace, chairman of the Mine Forum, addressed the crowd
relating the, largely irrelevant, history of the mine and its
relationship with the Mine Forum. He touched on the increased air
and noise pollution and the increased traffic that would result from
the smelter the details of which were in his article in last month's
issue of the Herald.

Wynand Engelbrecht, of the Daleside Volunteers and spokesman
for the NoAfrimat FurnaceCommittee, fired the emotions of the
crowd with his passionate speech.
A half dozen members of the EFF, in their red regalia was
present. Tumi Mabitsela the leader of the Daleside Ward Command
Team says the EFF supports the protest. Their priority is that “the
people need land and no new mines will be allowed when we are in
power” For existing mines a smelter such as the one Glen Douglas
proposes would not be allowed as it is in a residential area “and the
people come first” Also mines would be required to contribute
much more to the community. For instance they would require “the
road along the mine to be fixed as it is a disgrace, and to give sports
fields to the schools”
The procession marched along Adelaar Street, the northern border
of Glen Douglas Mine and one of the proposed sites for the kiln. At
the western corner they came to a halt and handed over the memorandum.
Willem Hattingh, mine manager, received the memorandum and
petition from 1,800 registrations as interested and affected parties
against Afrimat's plans for the kiln. This included legal papers
submitted by Oprah Winfrey in which her strong support for the
cause was recorded and was made part of the official submission.
He is not allowed to speak on behalf of Afrimat and we were unable
to contact the head office for comment.
Sean Ashwin of Dinsdale Road, one of the committee members,
says they were a little disappointed with the turnout but, as they
only received permission for the march from MLM late, they only
had two days to spread the message. At the follow up meeting they
discussed the way forward. The residents will be kept informed as
the matter progresses.

PAM Action Group acts decisively
to prevent the establishment
of the Vaal Metro
In the wake of the national election the People against the Metro
(PAM) movement in Midvaal is taking the Municipal Demarcation
Board (MDB) to court with strong backup from the local
community.

Happy first time voters
According to PAM the decision of the Municipal Demarcation
Board to proceed with the proposition of a combined Metro
cons is ting of Emfuleni (Vereeniging, S ebokeng and
Vanderbijlpark), Midvaal and Sedibeng is unwarranted.
“The areas earmarked for the formation of the Metro does not
comply with the criteria stipulated in Sections 24 and 25 of the
Municipal Demarcation Act, and Section 2 of the Municipal
Structures Act,” said the Chairperson of PAM, Mr Freddie Peters.
Join us for an evening filled with Great Food
Page 3
In terms of a section 26 notice of the Municipal Demarcation Act
the MDB considered requests for the redetermination of the
Midvaal Local Municipality, Emfuleni Local Municipality and
Sedibeng District Municipality into a single Metropolitan
Municipality.
“PAM had an independent analysis done by Professor Cameron.
According to his report there is not sufficient justification for the
formation of a Metro which is to include Midvaal. Criteria as
stipulated by the above mentioned acts includes high population
density, an intense movement of people goods and services,
extensive development, multiple businesses and industrial districts
as well as a centre of economic activity with a complex and diverse
economy. These were all found not to meet the prescribed criteria
or to be small and existing only to a limited extent,” said Peters.
“What is very important to note is that the MDB also did an
assessment but refused to make the findings of their assessment
available
to us. According

information as part of a transparent and objective process,” he said.
Legal Route:
“We have decided that there is no other course of action but to
take the MDB to court. Notice of motion was served in the Gauteng
High Court on 10 April 2014 and we are awaiting the response of
the respondents. We feel that we have a very strong and well
prepared case. Our legal team with considerable experience in
Local Government matters and Demarcation issues is formidable,”
said Peters.
“In the light of the recent elections we feel especially motivated
that the people have spoken once again and clearly want an
autonomous DA council in Midvaal. More people than ever have
voted and the DA won the national election in Midvaal outright. In
the 2009 elections the ANC still received 46.16 percent of the vote,
this has now declined to 40.09 percent. The three parties namely
the DA, VFP and COPE which are members of PAM obtained a
52.78 percent majority vote against the Metro in the most recent
election.” he said.
“We have quite a number of major concerns regarding the Metro

Midvaal Speaker Leaves for Parliament
A
midst the storm of the Midvaal Local Municipality's
Council meetings, of the politicians deep in debate,
questions ricocheting through the air, decisions being
made, and resolutions being passed, sits the Eye, the quiet,
stabilising Speaker of the House, Councillor Alan McLoughlin.
With an unwavering sense of
calm, he conducts his business,
calls the House to order,
deflects any tension, and
ensures proceedings remain
smooth and productive. After
three years of dedicated
service, MLM now wishes the
fondest of farewells to Cllr
McLoughlin who has become a
Member of Parliament
representing the DA, following
the results of the May 7 elections.
While his gentle nature and
soft-spoken personality endear
him to most, family and
colleagues alike will agree that Alan McLoughlin is no push-over.
Stoic in his beliefs, he is known for standing up against injustice and
cruelty, and for making wise, measured decisions in his
professional and personal capacities. What many people don't
realise is the remarkable number of talents possessed by Cllr
McLoughlin. A lawyer by qualification, he has involved himself in
a variety of other activities, from playing music, to dabbling in
plumbing, and even managing a hotel. His dexterity, as well as
unwavering belief in the bright future awaiting South Africa, will
surely stand him in excellent stead as he takes up his new mantle as a
MP.
June 2014
Midvaal's Mayor, Cllr Bongani Baloyi, describes Cllr
McLoughlin as “an upstanding person, a person with morals and
integrity. He was critical of the performance of Midvaal as an
institution, calling on his colleagues to shake off complacency and
perform optimally at all times.” While Midvaal will certainly miss
Cllr McLoughlin, the Mayor has noted that “this move should not
be regarded as a loss for the people of Midvaal, but rather, a wonderful prospect for Cllr McLoughlin to make a bigger impact at a
Parliamentary level, which is why the DA has chosen to include
him there”. As an MP, Cllr McLoughlin will be afforded the
opportunity to pursue his passion of working with people, and
serving the South African community. Midvaal Local Municipality
has full faith that he will represent his people with insight, pragmatism and efficiency, and add a valuable contribution to our
country's Parliament.

and one that stands out is the fact that fewer councillors will have to
serve vast areas and will become quite out of touch with their
communities. Twenty seven councillors serving currently will be
replaced by only four. The bulk of capital will also be spent on the
nucleus being Emfuleni which will mean that surrounding areas
like Midvaal will most certainly be neglected. Another big concern
is the financial implication of a Metro, though there will be fewer
office bearers the salary scales of employees will be much higher,”
said Peters.
“The Metro is far from the done deal that many may think and
some would like the community to believe. The Metro, if implemented, can also only start functioning after the 2016 elections.
An interim meeting was held with the respective role players from
Emfuleni, Midvaal and Sedibeng, but this meeting was not held
within the 14 day time span as stipulated in the Government Gazette
publication of the Sec 14(5) Notice and was therefore deemed
illegal and futile by the DA,” Peters concluded.
New immigration regulations
a threat to tourism and investment
The Department of Home Affairs' recently gazetted immigration
regulations are nothing short of xenophobic and will surely curb
tourism, investment and kill jobs.
A speculative analysis of these regulations would suggest that

Home Affairs is trying to remedy, or rather, cover-up, its rampant
permit backlogs by imposing potentially detrimental legislation
instead of addressing the mismanagement issues within the
department.
A main concern with these regulations is that all mention of fees,
fines, investment, financial means or income criteria, as well as
critical skills list, and lists of industries that are in the national
interest are excluded. They have also not been subject to public
comment and scrutiny.
Furthermore, the regulations' various omissions and shortcomings raise some constitutional issues that we will explore in
due course.
In the meantime, I will write to the new Home Affairs Minister,
Malusi Gigaba, and request a formal meeting to discuss the
detrimental impact of these regulations as soon as possible.
Investors, tourists, students and potentially skilled immigrants
are likely to be dissuaded by these stringent regulations, in turn jeopardises much-needed job creation and foreign investment.
Minister Gigaba's dismissive attitude towards public outcry and
personal appeals regarding these regulations sets a worrisome tone
for the new Home Affairs Minister's term.
An efficient Home Affairs department is a crucial component of
our country's economy.
The DA will not sit back and let Minister Gigaba's hubris plunge
yet another department into darkness.

Councillor’s Corner
Thank you to all the residents of Ward 4 for turning out in their
numbers to vote in the election last month. The figures are as
follows
« Registered voters 3705 compared to 2931 in 2009, an increase
of 26.4%
« Votes cast
2946 compared to 2613 in 2009, an increase
of 12.7%
« Turnout
79.51% compared to 89.15% in 2009
These figures must be read with the understanding that in 2009,
the last national election, Midvaal comprised 10 wards and now it
comprises 14.
Latest news from PAM (People Against the Metro): PAM and
Midvaal have filed papers in the North Gauteng Court. All the
respondents except the Demarcation Board (this includes the
Minister of Cooperative governance and SALGA) indicate that
they will not defend the case but will abide by the court decision.
The Demarcation Board has indicated intention to defend. They
fired their first legal team and appointed a new legal team, then
requested additional time because they could not make the
deadlines. PAM's legal team granted them the permission for
additional time.
Lastly, I would like to thank all the thoughtful residents of Henley
who sent me messages of support during my recent illness. Each
one of them was like a dose of medicine for me.

Inaugural IDP Representative Forum
As part of Midvaal Council's drive for increased public
participation, Executive Mayor, Councillor Bongani Baloyi, hosted
the inaugural IDP Representative Forum on 27 May at the
Meyerton Golf Club. The aim of the Forum was to provide a platform for interaction between the municipality and civil society, and
to allow residents from different spheres, including ward committee members, business and NGO's to engage with the Integrated
Development Plan (IDP). The IDP is a document which details all
the projects which a municipality will undertake in a financial year,
and is used as a planning tool to guide prioritisation of projects,
budget allocation and implementation plans.
The Mayor used the opportunity to present the plans, the planning

process, and the economic overview of the Midvaal Municipality
to the attendees. His aim was to show them Midvaal's strong points,
and where the community should be capitalising on opportunities,
and also to show them the areas which need more work, such as
provision of water in informal areas, and to discuss how Midvaal
will focus on those issues and try to resolve them. After the
presentation by the Mayor, there was a breakfast and networking
session, to allow the community to interact with Midvaal's
Mayoral Committee Members as well as Heads of Department.
The final IDP document was approved by the Council on 29 May
2014. The Mayor hopes to visit wards once again in the next
financial year, to present completed projects to the residents and
update them on progress across Midvaal.

Manny de Freitas is appointed
as a Shadow Minister
Democratic Alliance Parliamentary Leader, Mmusi Maimane
announced the DA's new shadow cabinet on 4 June. “This shadow
cabinet will make pragmatic legislative proposals that will tackle
South Africa's problems head on, with a commitment to the
creation of real jobs in South Africa,” Maimane said in his
announcement.
Maimane said that Manny de Freitas is appointed as Shadow
Minister of Transport. He comes with a wealth of experience in this
field. He has served on transport committees in the Gauteng
Legislature and in the previous Parliament as Shadow Deputy
Minister for Transport.
“I am most excited to return to the Transport portfolio as this is a
job creator and vital in the economic development in South
Africa,” de Freitas explained. Manny de Freitas said that there are a
number of transport issues which South Africans are currently
confronting. “Issues such as the toll road project where there are
proposals to establish similar systems in other provinces are an
example of issues which need to be dealt with,” said de Freitas. He
said that the unacceptably high number of road deaths is another.
Manny de Freitas said that he is excited and looking forward to
the challenge of addressing transport issues.

Lost or stolen? This month we have an advert from a heartbroken
owner of a beloved husky which has been missing for four weeks.
Just the mention of this case elicits a string of similar stories
together with theories such as they have been stolen for the fight
market or to be sold overseas. Stolen Dogs SA is a site on Facebook.
There are a variety of dogs posted there, mainly from Western Cape
and mainly staffies and other terriers but also greyhounds and
huskies. One commentator postulates that these dogs are stolen by
druggies to sell on a street corner for just enough to cover their next
fix. A more useful site seems to be the blog set up by Stan Wallace, Midvaal Dog Blog on Facebook at
facebook.com/groups/562823373805266/. We can only appeal to readers not to buy dogs from such a
source. How do we fight such a scourge?
Haven't had any letters to the editors this month. Is everybody worn out or just not managing to put
what they say to their mates down on paper? It could be that the short tweet has taken over and the effort
needed to write an email is felt to be just more than a person has time for. Well a short tweet-type note
might say all you need to. If this fits you, send your message in that form.

Children's home receives some hope
The kitchen is immaculately clean, the beds neatly made, and the
shelves carefully arranged, as a group of volunteers from ABSA's
Sandton office make their way into the Precious Place of Hope
Children's Home in Midvaal. The children sit in a patch of sunlight
filtering into the lounge, and those who can walk eagerly rush to
greet the newcomers, and help them with their parcels. The rest watch
from their wheelchairs or sofas, some excited, some nervous, some
unaware.
Precious Place of Hope opened their doors in 2006, as a sanctuary
for children with physical and mental disabilities, and now cares for
19 children. But raising the funds to keep a home of this type

some of their requests. The bank oversaw the installation of a new
solar geyser for the home, and also funded new windows to replace
broken ones which posed a danger to the children, and let in the
cold winter wind. The staff at the ABSA head office also collected
clothes, food, toys and blankets, which they delivered to the home
on 16 May 2014. They decided to start with donations to help the
home through winter, and will visit each quarter with a contribution.
The management of the home, and Midvaal MMC Patricia
Pretorius, expressed their gratitude to ABSA for assisting this very
needy cause. “The people running this home are doing such incredibly important work in our community, and it is devastating to see
them struggling because they don't have enough funds or support,”
said Councillor Pretorius. Zenzele Dlamini, Public Sector
Relationship Executive for ABSA in Sandton, said, “We are always
looking for worthy causes to benefit from our Social
Responsibility Programmes, and as ABSA is Midvaal's primary
banker, when Councillor Pretorius mentioned that this home
needed help desperately, we stepped in to help the Midvaal
community where we could. We hope this will assist the home, and
want to thank those who work tirelessly to keep it operational.”

Saturday 24 May was an awesome winter's day in Henley to match
an amazing time that was enjoyed at St. Andrew's.
Thanks are expressed to the 27 traders who opted to support our
Family Fun Day by bringing their product, crafts and scrumptious
food to our party- the day being held to celebrate the congregation's
20 years in the Hearn Road buildings.
Thanks are expressed to the members of the Henley community
who supported the day and were richly rewarded with an enjoyable
outing under the gentle winter sun. I am sure that all enjoyed the
variety of good food on offer as
well as the opportunity to connect
with one another in a very relaxed
atmosphere.
The attendance can best be
described as a steady trickle of
people all day. The children
enjoyed the Kiddies Corner and
pony rides. In the early afternoon
Pic Ashleigh Hayes
marketers were treated to an attack
dog display.
The day was organized under the banner of Family Fun Day
Events in line with the congregation's desire to be a Family Church
in the Henley/ Meyerton community, seeking to share the love of
God with our community by holding community events regularly
where our community benefits. This is line with our Vision
Statement - To be a functioning believing community who knows
God, seeks His empowerment and makes Jesus known.
You are invited to diarise the following dates this year: Music in
the Park on Friday 26 September, and Carols by Candlelight on
Sunday 14 December. We would love you to join us!

A Baboon Signalman On The Railways
South Africa's most famous baboon must surely be Jacko who
assisted his master, James Wide, at Uitenhage during the mid1880s.
James Edwin Wide came out to South Africa from England in about
1875, joined the Cape Government Railways and was employed on
the construction of the railway from Uitenhage to Graaff Reinet. It
was here in about 1878 that he met with a tragic railway accident
and lost both legs, severed just below the knees. He apparently fell
while trying to apply the
brakes of a moving train.
When Wide returned
to work, walking on two
artificial legs, he was
made the signalman at
Uitenhage station. Soon
after that he acquired a
baboon on the Uitenhage
market and commenced
training the animal to
help him with his daily
routine. As his home was
about 1km from the signal cabin, Wide must have received
permission to use a ganger's trolley to commute between work and
home. It is said that the baboon assisted Wide with lifting the
trolley on and off the rails. "This the animal did by sitting at the side
of the track, manipulating first one wheel then the other into
position and finally placing the platform [floor] on top. Mr Wide
would then sit on this trolley and the trip to the signal cabin would
commence, the baboon at times pushing from behind and at other
walking ahead pulling on a riem [a strip of hide] which Mr Wide
would hold in his hands". [The Times, 8 Sep 1948]. According to
this source, Jacko was trained to pull the signal levers. He was
however not able to "throw the points", i.e. lift the points lever, as it
was beyond his strength.
Experienced signalmen have disputed the claim that the baboon
could pull a signal lever. In one of the two available pictures of this
famous baboon, Jacko stands next to a lever in the down position
but this does not prove that he actually pulled it. "He soon learned
that one blast from a train whistle meant pulling down the signal
lever controlling the Uitenhage-PE line and he would look to his
master for confirmation". The author of the Times article asserts
that Wide is seen giving confirmation by the raised finger. The
signal for the Graaff Reinet line was two whistles, with Wide
showing the baboon two fingers.
"A large dog also assisted in pulling the trolley to and from the
signal cabin, being harnessed in front of it. Jacko the baboon eventually died from over strain, and the dog was run over by a train
and killed. Mr Wide was a well-known taxidermist and specimens
of his work, including South African wild birds and small animals
and snakes, are to be found all over the world. Mr Wide returned to

Wales and died there in 1920"
On 11 October 1963 a Mr McQueen, aged 79, visited the SAR
Museum and claimed to be the only living member of the 1897
CGR staff at Uitenhage, who saw Jack at work. He was then a lad of
about 15 and serving
his apprenticeship at
U i t e n h a g e
M e c h a n i c a l
Workshops. Wide's
daughter had been his
teacher. He and other
boys often raided the
plantation behind the
signal cabin for nests
and Jacko would
grunt at them,
w h e r e u p o n Wi d e
would let Jacko loose to chase the boys. According to McQueen,
Jacko originally belonged to one Van Rensburg of the district who
used Jacko as a touleier for his span of oxen hauling the wagon
bringing vegetables to the market. Children used to tease him along
the way which apparently did not worry him. However when dogs
barked at him he would nimbly jump on the yoke of the oxen and
remained there until all was quiet again. He would then jump down
and continue to lead the oxen. It was through McQueen's father that
Wide obtained the baboon from Van Rensburg for £5. Besides his
railway duties, Jacko could draw water with a windlass from a well
and pour it into a bucket and carry it to the cottage. According to
McQueen, Jacko's handling of the trolley was “unbelievable". The
baboon would put the wheels on the rails and wedge them with
stones and then help Wide to put the platform [floor] on the axles. At
meal times, he would sit on a stool in the cabin and wait for his food
to be dished up and always waited for Wide to start. Jacko served
Wide for twelve years.
The Times article as well as McQueen referred to Wide's hobby
as a taxidermist and that he preserved Jacko in this way. The
statement that Jacko was sent to the Grahamstown Museum is
doubtful. In a letter of 29 November 1963, the Director of the
Albany Museum denied knowledge of this.
Postscript: During the 1960's, the SAR Museum [Under the
Rissik Street bridge] was in the process of constructing an exhibition from the photograph where Wide and Jacko appear with the
points tumblers and signal box in the rear. It so happened that the
General Manager of the SAR arrived with a group of distinguished
visitors to view the model of the future Johannesburg station on
display there. When enquiring what the stuffed baboon, trolley etc
was all about, the Curator, Rhoedie van Rensburg told them the story
of Jacko. Afterward the GM's secretary phoned to say that the GM
wanted the exhibition to be stopped. Why? “The General Manager
does not want the public to get the impression that baboons work
for the railways!”

Walkerville Farmers Market:
Proudly Community Active
Walkerville Farmers Market is proud of its role and involvement in
local Community projects.
SANBS visits the market every second month and donors come
from all corners of the Midvaal area to donate their precious pint of
blood. SANBS is yet to be disappointed with the number of pints
collected, which average about 25 pints every visit. Over the last
four years, an average of about 600 pints of blood has been donated.
Well done donors!
Irwin's Animal Rescue Centre is a frequent stallholder and receives
great support from the community. They have a large variety of
second-hand items on sale every month for bargain hunters.
Donations of old blankets and towels, tinned and dry dog food are
always welcome and can be dropped off at Irwin's stall every last
Saturday of the month. With over 400 dogs to feed and house, every
donation is appreciated.
Our current endeavour, the WFM KNIT-A-THON, the brainchild
of one of our stallholders, Ann, is a project involving knitters keen
to knit squares which will be sewn into blankets for the needy this
winter. Knitting is undertaken by visitors and stallholders alike and
squares will be collected every Saturday at Walkerville Market until
Saturday 28 June. We will celebrate our achievements in style with
live music, public thank-yous and lots of fun, before handing over
the final pro-jects. Everyone is welcome to help.
Tickets for the new Walkerville Youth Day Walk are on sale at the
Market every Saturday. This is a fun 6km walk taking place at 9am
on Monday, 16 June from the Stirrup Glen Horse & Game Farm.
R30 entry gets you family fun with no pubs, no tar and no wheels.
All proceeds go to local charities. Find out more from
[email protected].
Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer is another project close to our
hearts. This year Cupcake Day will be held on Saturday 28
September. Our Cupcake Angels bake and sell cupcakes at a designated stall and all proceeds go to Kids with Cancer. You too can be a
Cupcake Angel this year, find out how you can help by emailing us

The people at Walkerville Farmers Market pride themselves on
their community involvement and spirit. We feel we should not only
be the change, but lead the change in the community, and welcome
like-minded people to join in all our community activities.

Extracts from the
Mayor's budget speech
Recently, Executive Mayor, Cllr Bongani Baloyi, presented the
Midvaal budget for 2014/15. Below are some extracts that affect
Henley, Daleside and Walkerville particularly:
Of the total capital budget of nearly R86 million, 20% is for
operational expenses, and the remaining 80% will go towards
projects across the wards. He dispelled the misconception that more
is spent in some wards than in others. There is money being spent in
every ward in Midvaal.
“R3million will be spent on the Sicelo Reservoir and Main. This
is another a long term project which involves the construction of a
new 10 mega litre reservoir and bulk water mains. This project is
linked to the upgrading of Sicelo sewers in that the two projects will
allow the development of additional housing in the greater Sicelo
area. The project will also improve water pressure in Sicelo, Highbury,
Henley on Klip, Daleside, Valley Settlements and part of Walkers
Fruit Farms. In the 2014/15 financial year, part of the project is to
improve the security of the water supply to HoK as currently the
bulk of HoK's water is supplied via a pipeline across the Henley
weir.”
“We will work on a R6million extension to Daleside sewers. The
design and tender process will be completed by June 2014, and the
contractor will be on site in August. The Adelaar street pump station
will be upgraded to take the additional flow of sewerage and raise it
above the 1 in 50 year flood line on the Klip River.”
“Further to all the projects I am listing, it's important to note that
the contractors on these projects are requested to use local sub-contractors and local labour wherever practical, which increases the
spin-off benefits from the projects being implemented through the
creation of employment, and skills training.”
“The tariff increases reflect the fact that we are moving towards a
higher rate of inflation in the coming year and increases in items
such as fuel will have a dramatic effect on our operations. Furthermore, Midvaal has been very conservative with its increases in the
past but we cannot continue with this practice if we are to ensure
even better levels of service delivery in future.”
“Proposed tariff increases are therefore as follows: Assessment
rates: 10.0%, Electricity Tariffs: 7.39%, Refuse Removal: 10.0%
(attributed to fuel increases), Basic Sewerage and Additional
Sewerage: 10.0% Basic Water and Water Consumption: 10.0% “
“Rand Water has announced a bulk tariff increase of
approximately 8.1% and this will result in Midvaal's water tariffs
increasing by 10%. Indeed there is a need to manage this scarce
resource more carefully but, despite the proposed increases, our
water tariffs will remain lower than those of neighbouring
municipalities.”
“Our budget calculations are done on the assumption of a 96%
collection rate in Midvaal. We need to thank our residents for
paying on time, and we need to keep up the good work in this area.”

Kidz doing it themselves
At the Immaculate Equestrian Academy Elite, we recently held a
Kidz Market to encourage young entrepreneurs. All stall holders
were under the age of 18 and some as young as 10 years old. Parents
were encouraged to help their children with finances and organisation. At IEA Elite we are trying to teach children a valuable
lesson early in life, that making money requires effort and dedication. We want them to understand all the thought and work that
goes into making a living.
Our learners all discovered that their first attempt at holding a
stall was not plain sailing. They admitted that, although having
been reasonably successful on the day, there were a number of
issues upon which they could improve. We look forward to seeing
their progress at the next Kidz Market day which will be held on
Sunday 31 August 2014. Anyone under 18 years old can hire a stall
for R50.00. For more information call the IEA Elite office 087 750
“In the final analysis it is not what you do for your
children but what you have taught them to do for
themselves that will make them successful human
beings.”

by trying, too zealously, to make it easy for them.”

e-worming should be done every 4 months, but every 6
months is considered acceptable. You should use a full
spectrum de-wormer at least once a year. De-worming
your horse helps maintain a good condition (shiny coat and fat
horse).
Prevention is better than cure: Vaccinate for flu including tetanus
no less than every six months and for African horse sickness once a
year (October to December). Both should be administered by a vet
who will sign off your horse's vaccine card or passport.
The farrier should be called out every 6 weeks or so to take care of
your horse's feet to help prevent your horse becoming lame.
Dentists should be called out no less than once a year. Some
competitive riders prefer their horses to see a dentist every six
months, but once a year is considered adequate.
Congratulations to Shandre Lombard who won the champion
sash and rosette in last month's competition. The correct answers
were: 1 Safety hat, 2 Tie, 3 Show riding jacket, 4 Jodphurs, 5 Heeled
shoes, 6 Bridle, 7 Stirrup iron, 8 Lead rein. We had over 200 emails,
a wonderful response.
– Montanique Wilson
On the weekend of 16 to 18 May, 1st Henley Scouts took part in a
rafting challenge called Kon Tiki, which is held every year at
Arrowe Park Scout grounds at Homestead Dam in Benoni. We
joined up with two Scout groups from Crown Gardens and
Mondeor, and built our raft from nothing but wooden poles, rope,
barrels, boarding and recycled materials. With a little help from
some of the adults, we managed to get a nice raft on the water. Our
group was made up of 7 girls and one boy.
The Scouts had to remain on the raft for 24 hours continuously
and complete certain challenges during that time.
The weekend was a learning experience because 1st Henley
Scouts last competed in the Kon Tiki more than ten years ago.
Despite some difficulties, fun was had by all and the team placed
49th out of a fleet of 52 rafts.

Café du Cirque's latest attraction: Pizza!
The Café du Cirque at the Circus is well known in the area for
delicious breakfasts and lunches. Bikers, cyclists and locals are
particularly loyal patrons but in winter the garden is not always
quite so inviting. They have therefore extended and enclosed their
stoep area and added a pizza oven so now, even on blustery days,
one can have a cosy meal there. In line with the circus theme, the
pizzas have names such as Fire-Eater, Houdini and Tickey. Their
famous pancakes are still on the menu as are their other favourites.

Kon-Tiki was the raft used by Norwegian explorer and writer Thor
Heyerdahl in his 1947 expedition across the Pacific Ocean from South
America to the Polynesian islands. It was named after the Inca sun god,
Viracocha, for whom “Kon-Tiki was said to be an old name …

Acknowledgement of exceptional
service in the community
Rainbow Nation Animals is a registered, non-profit organisation
working at Piel's Farm since 2009, whose main focus is the
sterilisation of township animals. We also provide assistance with
vaccinations, de-worming, tick and flea treatments and medical
cases that require veterinary attention. Our organisation has a
strong ethic to support and educate the owners on responsible pet
ownership as we believe everyone has the right to own a pet responsibly. We do not charge the owners, as most of them are extremely poor. We have built up a really good relationship with the
owners and the improvement in the animals' condition and wellbeing is amazing. This year we will hold our fourth annual Pride &
Responsibility Dog Show and we welcome anyone who would like
to come along and see the relationship between dog and owner for
themselves.
We could not have achieved our results without the assistance of
Dr. Hennie Boonzaaier at the Kliprivier Dierekliniek in Meyerton.
When I approached him for assistance with our welfare cases all
those years ago, he did not hesitate to agree. He quietly gives this
assistance, and I know of many other people and welfare organisations that he helps without anyone knowing – he is a very humble
man. What sets him apart for us, besides being an excellent vet, is
that he treats our township dogs with exactly the same high standard
of care as any of his customers' most valuable show animals. He
makes it possible to treat badly broken limbs of animals that
otherwise, through lack of funds, would have had to be put to sleep.
We have had several poisonings that we have rushed through. By
the time we arrive, he or his other vet and vet nurse, have everything
set up ready to treat the animal. His entire staff is always courteous
and helpful. We are lucky to have a 24 hour emergency service. We
are always assured of a friendly voice on the other end of the line.
On behalf of all of us at Rainbow Nation Animals, the owners and
pets, thank you Dr.
