PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
An Eye on Autumn
As I write this addition of the President’s Message, it’s a cool, drizzly mid-June day. The autumn
and its associated return to back-to-school routines seems a long way off. Yet here at the Centre,
autumn planning is almost complete as it takes months of preparation by our Programmers to
be able to offer our patrons a full suite of programs and activities for the autumn. While most
of us are still enjoying the enjoyable, slower pace of our Vancouver summer, this Fall 2014 edition
of the Dunbar Program Guide will be completed and sent off to the printer, ensuring it gets to you in time for
your autumn schedules. And this routine is one that is repeated four times a year, to ensure that the Dunbar
Community Centre continues to be a place that delivers a selection of year-round recreation activities for
you to enjoy.
This fall, we’re repeating our very popular week of free classes in the first week of September. We tried this last
year, in the hopes that it would give our patrons a way to try some new programs without making a financial
or time commitment, and we also wanted to attract patrons to the Centre during the traditionally slow first
week in September. We are pleased to report that it was such a big hit that it’s back this year. See the red FREE
banners throughout this guide for classes to try this year.
This fall, we also plan to start updating both our main lobby area and the smaller upstairs lobby. Since we are
unsure about the Park Board and City’s current position on the proposed renewal of our community centre, the
Association Board has decided it’s time to do some minor updates at the Centre. Association funds have been
earmarked for this lobby update, and plans are being discussed with a Project Manager and the Park Board for
new flooring and furniture, fresh paint and improved display areas for sharing information. No dates have yet
been established, but we are hopeful the work will be done by year-end.
Have you seen one of our email newsletters yet? If not, please let us know at [email protected] and
we’ll add you to our circulation list. You can also stay in touch via our website (dunbarcentre.org), Facebook
(facebook.com/dunbarcentre) or Twitter (@dunbarcc).
On behalf of the Staff and the Board, we hope you
have a good fall season at Dunbar. We are always
looking for more people to get involved on a committee,
at our special events or on the Board. Please feel free
to contact us at [email protected] or stop by the front
counter if you are interested.

traditional yoga challenging or
inaccessible. This gentle form of yoga
replaces the yoga mat with a chair and
uses other props to modify yoga poses
so that you may still enjoy all the
benefits of yoga including improved
strength, flexibility, circulation and an
overall renewed sense of confidence
and well-being. Each class will also

Mindfulness Based Yoga
Mindfulness is defined as “paying
attention in a particular way; on
purpose, in the present moment,
and non-judgmentally”. It has
been shown to reduce stress levels,
improve concentration, help with
pain management and bolster the
immune system. In this class students
will combine specific mindfulness
practices (such as meditation and
body scanning) grounded in MBSR
with an active, mindful yoga practice.
Restorative Yoga
In this class we will move through a
series of gentle postures using props.
The focus of Restorative yoga is on
balancing the nervous system for
optimal health and wellbeing. If you
have a particular ailment or condition,
or you simply wish to maintain your
health and wellness, come take this
quiet time out from your hectic day
to learn these healing and relaxing
practices that will bring both body and
mind back into balance.

Ski West Young Men!
Four ski bums somehow managed
to convince BMW to lend them a
brand new, $100,000 SUV for three
weeks, and this is the story of how
they circumnavigated western North
America to ski six resorts and two
backcountry zones across nine states
and one province in under three weeks
before they had to give it back. Stories
include: enjoying world class food
and lodging on someone else’s dollar;
professional skiers and the injuries
sustained trying to keep up with
them; teaching American soldiers to
telemark ski; sunrise turns with the ski
patrol; and a pink bunny.
