Keselowski has a Series-high six
victories this year but enters the
Phoenix race seventh in the standings, 17 points behind his teammate
Logano and Hamlin, who are tied
for the lead.
Harvick is a favorite to reach
the Chase’s final four with a win at
the one-mile oval track, where the
Bakersfield native often raced early
in his career.
Harvick has won three of the last
Home,
from A10
All of which makes Saturday’s game against MSSU
important for the Tigers, as
they want to make sure their
final home game of 2014 is a
win and something they can
take into next season.
“It is very important to
keep getting these winning
seasons and bring football
back to the city of Hays,”
sophomore defensive back
Alex Schmidtberger said. “If
we can go out and win these
next two games and end 7-4,
that’s a huge statement for
the program. But still, in the
years to come, seven wins,
that is not going to be good
enough for us.”
Going for seven
As well as getting back on
track at home, a win Saturday would set up a possible
seventh win in the season
finale at Central Missouri
next week. FHSU hasn’t
won seven games since 1996,
a 7-3 season under former
coach Bob Cortese. In fact,
the Tigers have only once
had back-to-back winning

four Cup races here, including the
spring race this year, and overall
he’s won a record five Cup races at
Phoenix.
But some of the other eight drivers still in contention also have fared
well at Phoenix. Former winners
here include Edwards (2010, 2013),
Gordon (2007, 2011), Hamlin
(2012) and Newman (2010).
NASCAR adopted a four-round,
knockout-style format for the 10-
seasons since that time, coming in 2003 and 2004 when
coach Tim O’Connor led
the team to a 6-5 record each
year.
FHSU also is looking to
extend what is already a
school record for MIAA wins
in a season, having surpassed
the four-win record equaled
in three different years,
including the previous two
under Brown.
“From when I signed here,
the plan was to make us a
family and get this school
into a winning program.
And I felt like the progress is
here,” Albert said. “I got to
do everything I can (to win),
because I know when I’m a
senior next year I’m going to
want the guys to do everything they can to help us win
our senior game. It’s very important. And these guys, they
helped establish this program
with winning seasons and
just getting everybody and
making this team a family. I
feel like everyone owes them
that.”

have the top-ranked rush offense in the MIAA with 281

they only rank seventh in

FHSU is No. 11 in total offense (292.1 ypg).

the first time,” said Schmidtberger, a Topeka-Hayden

Tiger men suffer loss at
MIAA tourney
By The Hays Daily News
OLATHE — The Fort Hays
State University men’s soccer team fell in the semifinals
of the MIAA tournament
on Thursday, losing 2-0 to
third-seeded Lindenwood
University at Olathe’s College
Boulevard Activities Complex.
Second-seeded FHSU (115-3 overall) outshot LWU (106-3) for the match, 12-11, but
had to settle for just its fourth
shutout of the season and
second in as many matches.
The Tigers had defeated
LWU — which will play topseeded Northeastern State in
Saturday’s MIAA title match
— 8-0 on Sept. 25 and 2-1 on
Oct. 23.
FHSU will now await its
postseason fate, where it sits
in good position to receive a
berth to the NCAA Division
II tournament. The selection
show takes place at 7:30 p.m.
on Monday, the first round
getting underway on Nov. 20.
The FHSU women’s soccer team will play Southwest
Baptist tonight at 7 p.m.
in their MIAA tournament
semifinal game, also held in
Olathe. Chiefs will lose home game,
play in London in 2015
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (TNS)
— The Chiefs are headed to
London in 2015.
The club announced
Thursday it will play host to
the Detroit Lions on Nov. 1,
2015, in the NFL’s International Series at Wembley
Stadium — one of three NFL
games in the United Kingdom
next year. The game, which
will mark the first time the
Chiefs play overseas, will be
televised locally and nationally on Fox.
“It is an honor for Kansas
City to represent the NFL
on an international stage,”
Chiefs president Mark Donovan said in a release. “We
are excited for the opportunity this creates for our fans,
our city and the global growth
of the Chiefs brand.”
Because the Chiefs are
the home team, they will only
play seven regular-season
games in 2015 at Arrowhead
Stadium, which recently
underwent a renovation
in which Jackson County
taxpayers contributed $250
million.
Donovan, speaking to
reporters Thursday, said
season-ticket holders would
only pay for nine games in
2015 — two preseason and
seven regular-season games
— as opposed to the usual
10.
A team spokesman said
Chiefs chairman and CEO
Clark Hunt would not take
questions Thursday. But
Lions president Tom Lewand
said Thursday that his team
“would not have given up a
home game in Detroit.”
idea was to give drivers a greater
incentive to win races during the
Chase rather than merely collect
points.
“With this format you don’t feel
like you are ever secure unless you
Eagles, Kelly still have
win a race,” Keselowski said.
confidence in Foles
Yet it’s still possible that this year’s
champion could do so on points
PHILADELPHIA (TNS)
alone. Two of the eight Chase final- — Chip Kelly offered supists, Newman and Kenseth, have yet port for injured quarterback
to win a Cup race this season.
Nick Foles Thursday and
Michael Nelson is second
with 428 rushing yards and
five touchdowns, while freshman back Shannon Saunders
has 393 and six TDs.
Junior quarterback Scott
Lathrop has 335 yards rushing this season with four
TDs. He has only attempted
63 passes all season with a
55.6 percent completion rate,
and has 706 yards, four TDs
and two interceptions.
“It’s an offense that
nobody in our conference
does … a different look
that’s hard to prepare for
in one week’s time,” Brown
said. “If we get them at
third-and-long we are going to feel pretty good as
a defense because we get
them in a passing situation.
If they do run some type of
option play we will be able
to rally to it and stop them
and make sure they punt
the ball.”
FHSU has been relatively
successful against the run
this season, allowing 150.9
yards per game to rank fifth
in the MIAA. The Tigers
are fourth in total defense
at 366.2 yards per game.
MSSU is second in the
conference in third-down
conversions at 47.2 percent and second in time of
possession at more than 33
minutes a game.
With the Tigers also
bringing a run-heavy offense into Saturday’s game,
Brown expects to see the
type of game he remembers
from his playing days at
Pittsburg State.
“This is the way football
is supposed to be played. It’s
going to be smash mouth
football. It’s going to be run
football, just like it was back
in the old days,” Brown
said. “We got to dominate
the line of scrimmage and
do our jobs. You are going
to get tired of seeing the
same thing over and over
and over, but if you don’t
stay disciplined and do your
assignment, you are going
to be the guy that costs us
the game.”
dismissed the idea that the
Eagles had lost confidence
in him.
“I’ve got great faith in
Nick and I think he’s a hell
of a quarterback and I think
sometimes he gets banged
too much,” Kelly said.”I wish
there were more people like
Nick Foles in our lives.”
Foles has endured criticism
this season because he had
13 turnovers in eight games,
including 10 interceptions.
Foles also has thrown for 13
touchdowns and 2,163 yards.
Foles has been at practice during the last two days,
standing with quarterbacks
Mark Sanchez, Matt Barkley, and G.J. Kinne. He no
longer is wearing a sling as
he recovers from a broken left
collarbone.
“Nick has been great,”
Kelly said. “One thing about
Nick that I think I’ve always
admired is what his mind-set
is like. He has no control over
[the situation], so for him to
sit there and feel sorry for
himself, I don’t think you’re
ever going to get that out of
Nick. He’s talking about what
his rehabilitation schedule is
going to be and what he has
to do to put himself in a situation and how he can be a real
good teammate and support
Mark and Matt.”
