LAWRENCE — He left
the large group of celebrating Hutchinson High
football players with that
ever-present smile.
There’s a hint of shyness in Blaik Middleton’s
smile. He’s just a senior
football player trying to
score touchdowns. Nothing more. But Friday at
Lawrence Free State,
Middleton wasn’t just a
football player. He was
quite possibly the best
football player in the
state, and thanks in part
to Middleton’s efforts, the
Salthawks are back in the
state championship game
for the 10th time in 12
years.
Middleton wasn’t surprised that the Salthawks
punished Free State 42-14,
but when told what his
final numbers were, even
Middleton shook his head
with disdain.
Not only did Middleton
score all six Hutchinson
touchdowns, but he also
rushed for a jaw-dropping
357 yards on just 21 carries. That’s 17 yards a
carry.
“That is a big night,”
Middleton said, that smile
getting bigger. “I give God
all the glory, and I give all
