Today’s Gospel
Let us pray for the grace to grow in our faith and

Gospel : John 2:13-22
Jesus was speaking about the temple

What is a basilica?
Titus 1:1-9, Luke 17:1-6
Tuesday, November 11
What’s the difference between a church, a
cathedral, and a basilica?
Titus 2:1-8, 10-14, Luke 17:7-10
Wednesday, November 12
The word church originally did not mean a
building. It was a term used to designate the
assembled believers. In the New Testament,
church was used to identify those who
believed in Jesus Christ and followed his way.
Later the term took on its modern definition: a
building in which Christian believers gather
for worship, especially to celebrate the Eucharist.
A cathedral is the bishop’s church and
the chief church of a diocese or archdiocese.
The name takes its origin from cathedra, the
“bishop’s chair.” The bishops of old delivered
their homilies from the bishop’s chair in the
cathedral.
A basilica is an early form of church
building used for Christian worship. This was
especially the case in the western part of the
Roman Empire after the time of Constantine
(fourth century).
Today, basilica is an honorary title given to
certain churches by the pope. Rome has four
major basilicas: St. John Lateran (the pope’s
cathedral church, which we honor today),
St. Peter’s at the Vatican, St. Paul’s Outside
the Walls, and St. Mary Major. In addition, a
number of churches in Rome and throughout
the world are designated as minor basilicas.
Whether we worship in the basilica of
St. Peter’s in Rome or in a parish church, we
seek to draw closer to the Lord in our worship
and prayers.

Pray the rosary
Choose one of the following activities as a way to
further reflect on the Sunday readings:
•
As a family, talk about how words or actions can
"build up" or "tear down." How can our words and
action "build up" or "tear down" the church?
•
As a family, take time to "tour" your church after
Mass. Spend time looking at the art. Take note of
how the church building provides a welcoming
environment.
•
Invite each family member to share what they like
best about your parish church.
•
As a family, think of a service project you could do
to "build up" your parish church. Possibilities might
include: picking up trash outside, weeding flower
beds or sidewalks, or washing windows. You might
like to check with your parish to see how you can
help.

Come to the Water
All who are thirsty, come to refresh your
spirit as we seek our baptismal call to
Holiness……
Are we truly living out our baptismal call
with a contrite heart to Love our Neighbor?
For just as a body without a spirit is dead,
so also faith without works is dead.
James 2:26
All are welcome as we join together, with a merciful heart,
on Thursday, November 20th at 7:00 PM. We will come
together as the body of Christ to embrace the “Works of
Mercy” and discuss how we can reach out to the poor,

unemployment and fear. Special prayers, food and games are
planned, so hop on the bandwagon and join us as we recall our
younger days.
Mary Queen Church offers a support group, RESTORE
HOPE, to women who have had an abortion at any time
during their lives. This ministry seeks to help them heal,
experience God's love and mercy, and find forgiveness
within a small group setting. All information is kept
