Local Government Elections 2014
Welcome to our newly elected representatives. Nine Councillors have been elected for 4
years: Andrew Connor, Michael Kelly, Tanya King, Ian Mackenzie, Craig Perkins, Bob
Richardson, Rodney Synfield, Deborah White and Rodney Youd. Craig Perkins was
elected Mayor and Michael Kelly elected Deputy Mayor both for a 4-year period.

Westbury – Tasmania’s Tidiest Town 2014
Congratulations to coordinator, Di Robinson, and everyone who contributed to Westbury’s
application to this year’s Tidy Towns’ Awards. Judge Barrie Muir said “Westbury was a
town with a very caring community that takes enormous pride in what it does.”

NBN Rollout in Prospect Vale
NBN Co. has advised that work has commenced to rollout the National Broadband
Network in Prospect Vale and Blackstone Heights. Work will include overhead installations,
trenching and backfilling, cable hauling and installation of pits by Visionstream contractors.

Meandering 2014 – great original work at sensible prices
Meandering 2014 is an annual art exhibition where local artists present work based on
images of Meander Valley. This year’s exhibition will be open at Country Club Tasmania
from 21 Nov 2014 to 15 Feb 2015. Please take the opportunity to view this special body of
work. Entry is free and artworks are available to purchase.
Temporary Food Stalls
As the weather starts to warm up, many community groups will start planning on holding
events with food stalls such as sausage sizzles. Did you know that if you produce or
prepare food to sell to the public from a stall, you need to obtain a Temporary Food
Registration from Council? Information on food safety and application forms for a
temporary food stall can be found on Council’s website:

Fuel Reduction Burn - Travellers Rest
This Spring Tasmania Fire Service intends to undertake a fuel
reduction burn within the Travellers Rest Area. During burning operations public access to
this area is restricted. Please comply with directions from staff or any signs. This burn will
occur at short notice under suitable predetermined conditions and will generate smoke and
flames. Residents should not be alarmed. Thank you for your cooperation.

Nominations for Meander Valley Council’s Australia Day Awards
On Australia Day, Council recognises the exceptional contribution of its community
members with the presentation of Australia Day Awards. The Awards are presented in the
following categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of
the Year, Sports Award, and Volunteer Services Recognition Awards.
Do you know someone who deserves such an award? Then why not nominate them.

EVENTS:
WOAD (Windows On the Arts in Deloraine) community arts installations
As you wander the streets of Deloraine over the Craft Fair week-end you will probably
notice the art installations throughout. These have been put together by the local
community and community artists and greatly add to the atmosphere of the town.
Keep your eye out for giant poppies, wooden musical instruments, wallpapered outside
walls, cats, wind sculptures and banners galore.
Westbury Week 1- 8 November 2014
Westbury Week is an annual celebration when businesses and community groups are
invited to offer an experience to showcase the town’s many attractions. Program details

Celebrating Daniel Burke 1827-1927
Daniel was a founding member of the Westbury Municipal Council in 1863 and went on to
serve the Council for 60 years. Amongst his many roles, he was Mayor, Magistrate,
Coroner and Member of the House of Assembly for Cressy (1893 -1903). As a colonist and
loyal Irishman, it was Daniel who hid the legendary Irish Exile, John Mitchel, in 1853 and
kept him from the clutches of the Westbury militia.
A celebration event will be held to recognise Daniel’s achievements on Sunday 9
November at the Holy Trinity Church, Westbury, commencing 2.00 pm. All are welcome to

Tasmania has the highest rate of suicide of women and the second highest suicide rate of

CORES One Day Suicide Awareness Training
Family and community members are increasingly coming under pressure, which may be
related to emotional situations, finances, work, or it may be caused by a personal event
that has devastating effects. What happens if a person can’t cope ... will someone be there
for them? This ONE Day CORES Course will give you the skills and confidence to
recognise then assess a person who may be at risk of self-harm or suicide.
At Westbury Community Health Centre – free to young people or those who work with
young people - thanks to Sally’s Ride and Central Launceston Rotary.

Ever get tired of all those pesky ads while using the internet? Come along to Deloraine
Online on Monday 8 Dec at 10am to learn how to install an Ad Blocker, hide those ads and
enjoy using the internet.
Or perhaps you have recently bought a new PC/laptop and are finding Windows 8 a bit of a
challenge. Don’t worry you’re not alone. On Monday 15 Dec Dale Geddes will host a
‘getting more comfortable with Windows 8’ session at Deloraine Online. Where he will
cover the basics of windows 8 from working your way around the system to file
management system maintenance (keeping your windows 8 PC Zippy) we will also have a
section at the end where if you have any specific questions we will answer them.

Meander Valley on the Move
Deloraine on the Move is about to change its name to Meander Valley Business
Association and seek new business members from Westbury eastwards to Carrick. It
wants to create a Valley-wide ‘buy local’ campaign to promote local business across the

Do you need help with transport?
Community Transport Services Tasmania Inc. also known as CTST, is now available in
Deloraine and provides transport for aged, disabled and disadvantaged members of the
community, including their carers where necessary. Vehicles are driven by friendly local
volunteers. Passengers are required to make a cost contribution according to distance

New Working with Children Check
Between 1 July 2014 and end of 2016 if you want to work or volunteer with children, you
might need to apply for a new type of registration. Tasmania will come into line with all
other Australian States and Territories who already have similar registration processes.

SOS to the Meander Valley community
The Meander Valley Economic Renewal Action Group (ERAG) is working to establish an IT
hub to support career opportunities for young people. ERAG is seeking help from
community members who may have experience to offer in the following areas: website
design, systems management, computer operation, computer networking, electronics,
graphic art, video creation and editing. Also, if you are interested in gaining any of these

A local Green Army project starts 24 Nov 2014 – it involves works from the Kings Bridge to
Duck Reach area alongside the South Esk River. There will be various free qualifications
including First Aid, OH&S & Conservation & Land Management modules. The project is for
17-24 yrs with a payment of $10.30 per hour for the 17 yrs, through to $16.50 for the 24yrs
and includes all protective gear, training materials and tools and equipment. The course
runs for 30 hours per week for 20 – 26 weeks.

Meander Valley U3A is a self-help learning community for people in retirement or semiretirement. Its programs usually run in 6-8 week blocks and are often free.

Southern Cross Young Achiever Awards
Nominations for the Southern Cross Young Achiever Awards (SCYAA) are now open.
Each year, the SCYAA recognise the achievements of young people under 28 years old,
across ten categories. To view the categories and nominate a young person, please visit
the SCYAA website.
Nominations close 12 December. Winners announced during National Youth Week 2015.
2014-15 Sport and Recreation Tasmania grant programs are now open.
The Major Grants Program provides $15 000 - $80 000 grants to clubs, associations, local
government and other not-for profit providers of sport and active recreation.
The Minor Grants Program provides $500 - $10 000 grants to clubs, associations, local
government and other not-for profit providers of sport and active recreation.

Council Community Grants 2014/15
Applications to the Meander Valley Council‘s Community Grants
Program are invited all year round. Grants up to $3,000 are available to community
organisations for projects that address community needs through special events, sport and
recreation and/or community development. Information and application forms are available
from the Westbury Council Offices and www.meander.tas.gov.au. Applications for
consideration in the next adjudication round should be lodged by 31 December 2014.

AO Tennis Blitz is the largest participation campaign in Australian tennis history,
encouraging people of all ages and abilities to pick up a racquet and have a hit.

Old bikes to worthy homes, and also where to buy some
If you have an old bike, you now have a choice of worthy places to donate it:
Bikes for Africa.
Robert Blackman has been fixing up bikes for some time now, for sending to Africa. He
has recently sent a container-load and is currently working on more. You may also
purchase a bike he has and the money goes back into the Africa fund. Some bikes are just
too advanced to send to Africa. So it you are looking for a suitable spare bike

Mad Wheels Youth
Young people are fixing up old bikes at the Coats Patons factory under the guidance of
youth worker, Chris Brooks – a great project for building skills, recycling and providing
cheap transport all at the same time. Contact Chris at 0419 643 790 or 6344 4094 Monday
to Wednesday. The completed bikes are for sale at Coats Patons General Storage
(business hours plus Saturday mornings). Worth checking any time - as fast as the bikes
are completed, they sell. To find these two organisations, enter the Coats Patons factory
down the Thistle Street entrance laneway.
