months: 1-January, 3-March, 5-May, 7-July,
9-September, 11-November the meetings are 7 p.m.
in Lakeside Lodge. On the even numbered months:
2-February, 4-April, 6-June, 8-August, 10-October,
12-December, the meetings are held at 10 a.m. in
Lakeside Lodge. Workshops are held as needed, on
the last Wednesday of each month at 9 a.m. in the
Association office, all residents welcome.

President’s Corner
Speaking for the Board of Trustees
and for myself, we would like to wish
you all a very “Happy New Year.” May
2015 be a good year for us all.
The New Year brings a time to start
anew our plans to improve ourselves
and to help our families and friends to
achieve their best. We may have to give
of ourselves to accomplish this end, but
that is what parents, grandparents, and
friends do. Here in the Knoll, we have
a number of organizations that are
looking for volunteers and for people
to just come out and help to make the
clubs or activities events successful.
Why not make a resolution to get
out and become a part of the Knolls
activities? We can take up a new hobby
or just join in the fellowship of being
a part of a group of folks with similar
ideas and interests. No one should be
sitting around saying there is nothing
to do here in Leisure Knoll.
We have a number of projects
going on here in the Knoll--please
note the traffic flow that has been
altered to get to the recycling bins-the new exit comes up quickly and
be carful exiting onto the driveway to
the newspaper recycling sheds. The
pumping area project has begun to
show signs of life. We all hope that
the project will be completed quickly
and the driving situation put back to
the normal route. You will note the
work on some streets here in the Knoll
to improve the street water flow to the
catch basins--the pipes are being lined
with cement to seal them from leaking
and undermining the pavement--we
don’t need to worry about street sink
holes and the like.
We have had house “break-ins”
in the Knoll. While the police have
caught three individuals who are
alleged to be the thieves involved in
break-ins here in the Knoll ( please see
the article from the Manchester Police
here in the Knoll News), everyone
should still be on the watch for
possible strangers walking about our
neighborhoods. If you see something
that does not look right, please call the
police at 732-657-6111, not 911. If
you actually see a break-in occurring,
then call 911. We have a number of
folks looking into various ways to
protect their property, remember that
lights can work very well, both inside
and outside your house on timers and
on motions sensors. Please look for
the article entitled “Protecting You
Home From Break-Ins” in this issue
of the News. In the same thought, it
has been noted that we have a person/s
checking mailboxes--probably looking
for money being sent or received-again, please be diligent in watching
for strangers or things that just don’t
seem right. I am not trying to frighten
you, but to make you aware of your
surroundings. Not everyone is a good,
kind person in the world that we live in.

Community Manager’s Report
Burglars Caught!
As many of you may know, there were three or four
burglaries in Leisure Knoll and two more in River Point in
November and early December. The Manchester Police
Department has arrested three suspects with some of the
stolen items in their position. They are facing multiple
charges and, as of this writing, are in the Ocean County
Jail. The quick action by the Police is certainly appreciated.
Despite these burglars being captured, please do not let
your guard down. Lock your doors at all times and secure
your valuables. If you are going away, only let trusted
friends and family know and have someone check on your
home periodically. If you observe any suspicious persons
or activity, please call the Manchester Police Department
at 732-657-6111. For non-emergencies, you may leave a
message on their website at www.manchesterpolicenj.com
and press the “Tip Line” link.
There will be an open meeting, including a presentation
by the Manchester Police Department, in January to discuss
safety issues. Please watch the Creeper for the date, time,
and location.
Insurance
The Association’s insurance policies were due for
renewal on December 1, 2014. The Agent, JGS Associates,
put the policies out to bid and the Board voted on renewal
with the same carriers at the December 10 Board Meeting.
Pipe Repair/Lining on Hastings
The contractor who will be performing the pipe repairs
and pipe lining on Hastings, SWERP, had anticipated
beginning this Project on December 15, however, they had
an emergency outside of our community and had to delay his
start date to January 5, 2015. The good news is, the work
will not disrupt the holidays for those affected and they will
not be stopped by snow or ice for more than a day. Those
affected will receive letters and/or flyers regarding parking
and access to homes, which should not be too restrictive, as
work will be at manholes and storm drains in the street. In
the spring, this road will be paved. Thank you in advance
for your cooperation.
Paving of Roads
FWH Associates is inspecting all of the roads in
the community and will be updating their priority list,
recommending which streets are to be paved next. Their
report is anticipated at the start of the new year.
Concrete Project
The ever-present replacement of raised sidewalks and
curbs continues. As a part of that Project, as needed, trees
are removed from the city strip, the sidewalks and curbs
are replaced, and new trees are planted. This is followed
by road paving in some cases. At the Board Meeting of
December 10, the Board voted to replace thirty of the trees
where concrete had been replaced.
Snow Removal
They haven’t had to be used yet and hopefully will not
be, but the Snow Removal Procedures and the Schedule
of Clearing of Driveways and Service Walks of those on
Optional Snow Removal are repeated in this issue of the
Knoll News. Again, please do not park in the street when
snow is anticipated, especially at night, which is not
permitted at any time.
Gatehouse Hours/Roving Patrol
Remember to call the gatehouse (732-657-5007) if
you are going to have a car parked in front of your home
temporarily due to visitors or any other reason, as tickets
will not be issued by the Roving Patrol if you call first. If
visitors are staying more than one night, consider using the
lot in front of the office to park a car instead of the street,
especially with the threat of snow.
Office Building
Requests for Proposals for construction of the new
office building have been sent out. It is anticipated that the
site work will begin in spring 2015.
Putting Green
Once the site work is completed for the office building,
the putting green can be installed. A spring installation is
anticipated.
Pump Station
Pulte Homes’ rebuilding of the Township Utility
Company’s pump station is still in the set up stages. They
are dewatering the area (removing the ground water).
This water is draining into the storm drain in the lot which
empties into the lake. This is ground water – not sewer
water. Access to the recycling dumpsters in their new
location is unchanged, however, exiting this lot has. There
is a new temporary access road which must be used. Please
use caution when entering the road to and from the office/
maintenance building lot.
HOPA Surveys
There have been 1,107 members who have completed
and returned the Housing for Older Persons Act (HOPA)
Survey Forms as of December 15, which leaves 500 homes
which have not yet provided the form. 100% of the occupied
homes are required to provide the forms. A telephone
program has started with calls from volunteers to those who
have not responded being made to encourage compliance
with this requirement. If you have not yet completed yours,
please do so immediately. Forms are available at the Office
and at several events, including the Board Meetings. If you
cannot get to the Office, please call and a form will be mailed
or dropped off to you.

Email Blast

This will provide a means of communication from the
Association to those with email accounts in case of an
emergency or other need to reach the residents quickly.
Forms are at the office and in the copy room in Timberland
Hall. They can be dropped off at either location.
The following Motions were made and approved at the
December 10, 2014, Board of Trustees Meeting:
*Appoint Dominic Tangredi to fill the seat vacated by
the resignation of Patricia Shinners. This is being done
in accordance with the Amended and Restated By-Laws,
Article V., Section 4. Also in accordance with the By Laws,
Mr. Tangredi will hold office until the next regular Trustee
election by the Members in September 2015.
*Renew our insurance coverage effective December
1, 2014, through JGS Insurance Agency for General
Liability & Property Insurance with QBE Insurance, Auto
with Philadelphia Insurance, Fidelity Bond and D&O
with Continental Insurance, the Umbrella with Greenwich
Insurance, and Workers’ Compensation with the PMA
Group. JGS solicited four carriers for each of our policies,
but received quotes from only our current carriers, which are

by our documents and best practices. The purpose of this
coverage is for the protection of the residents, the Board,
and the Association. The net cost is approximately 11%
over the prior year, with the majority of the increase in the
General Liability and Property coverage, which was the
same results as last year, when the increase was 16%. The
total premium for these coverages is $170,060, which is
approximately $18,000 higher than the previous policy year.
The source of these funds will be provided by the Operating
Fund Budget for fiscal years 2015 and 2016.
*Replace thirty trees in the city strips in designated
areas of Elmswell, Flintshire, Harrogate, St. Paul, Dorset,
Mansfield, Twyford, and Red Hill Road. This work is to
be done in accordance with Specifications prepared for
that purpose. The purpose of this Project is to replace the
trees in the city strip which had to be removed due to the
removal of sidewalks, aprons, and curbs. The Contractor
chosen for this project is Down to Earth Landscaping since
they are the service provider for the Community. The cost
of this Project is anticipated to be in the amount of $8,000,
including sales tax. The source of the funds will be provided
by the 2015 Operating Fund Budget.
The next Open Board Meeting will take place on
January 14, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. in Lakeside Lodge. The
next Board Workshop will take place on Wednesday,
January 28, 2014, at 9:00 A.M. at the Association Office.

SNOW REMOVAL GUIDELINES
Our snow removal contract with Down To Earth (DTE)
requires them to plow the roads in our community. When the
snow stops falling, and the roads are completed, DTE starts
to clear driveways of those on service and the aprons of all
homes. Our own maintenance staff is responsible for the
clearing of snow from all of our paths and parking lots that
serve our clubhouses and office buildings. In addition, they
are responsible for the plowing and maintenance of both the
front and back gate entrances and the application of salt to
them, when necessary. Our staff applies the salt to the roads
or a portion of the roads with the Association’s salt spreader
and salt, when necessary, after all of the snow removal has
been completed. There are times when the roads are icy
and salt is applied, even if there is no snow. Salt is applied
to roads only – not driveways. Salting the driveways and
service walks is a homeowners’ responsibility. Our staff also
applies appropriate materials to the clubhouses’ sidewalks.
Plowing usually begins when three inches of snow
has accumulated on the roads, depending on the forecasted
weather and temperature. The Community Manager and
Maintenance Manager make the determination with Down
to Earth (DTE). Removal of snow from the driveways and
service walks of those on Optional Lawn and Snow Service
does not begin until the streets have cleared and the
snow has stopped, depending on the weather forecast and
conditions. If the snow has melted down on the driveways
to less than three inches, the snow may not be removed
from these surfaces, especially if this occurs in the daytime,
as there may be virtually little or no snow to remove from
most driveways.
The order in which driveways are cleared is as
follows. The Community is divided into four sections. Each
section gets its own crew. The homes on these streets are
done in the order shown on the Snow Removal Schedule
included in this Knoll News, ensuring that each time the
snow falls, each section and street is treated fairly. The
Schedule picks up where the last snow fall left off the prior
year. In subsequent snows, if any, the “Number 1” becomes
the last one done and everyone moves up one spot.
Special priority for driveway clearing is given to
certain “critical care” residents, limited to persons requiring
access to a scheduled form of life-sustaining treatments,
such as dialysis and chemotherapy. Proof of this must be
given to the office before the start of the snow season and
a list is maintained of these persons’ driveways, which are
cleared first by a special crew. Fortunately, the list of critical
care residents is not long.
Priority is not given to those residents who need to
go to work or who have appointments. It would be very
inefficient to have so much heavy equipment going around
randomly throughout every street doing just one or two
driveways on each street and then come back hours later
to do the rest of the street’s driveways. It is estimated that
it would close to double the time it takes to do the whole
community and, therefore, would be not only unfair to the
other residents, but also very expensive.
If there is an emergency and you must call an
ambulance or police and are not plowed out yet, call/
dial 911. Then, call the front gate immediately so that, if
possible, a crew can be dispatched to assist the emergency
responders with entering and exiting your home.
The driveways are cleared using two steps:
First, a tractor with a back blade backs into the
driveway in stages (depending on the depth of the snow)
to draw the snow away from the driveway and out onto
the road. Then, a small machine called a Bobcat clears
the street snow down by the curb. One or more pieces of
heavier equipment then disposes of the snow as close by
the driveway as possible, usually on the lawns.
Second, a crew of DTE’s shovelers has the job of
clearing a path from your door to the driveway following
the cement path (not to your car door). They also clear in
front of the garage about two (2) feet in width, so that the
plow does not have to come up close to the garage door. If
there is a car in the driveway, they clear two feet from the
back of the car for the same reason. They will not clear near
the garage door, nor will they clear on the sides of the car
to avoid damage. In order to keep the machines operating
at top efficiency, these shovelers follow the machines so as
not to slow down the machines’ progress.
In order to know when you are going to be plowed,
first, refer to the Snow Schedule with the four Section street
list in this, and subsequent, issues of the Knoll News. Call
the office during office hours and stay in touch by calling the
Snow Hotline after hours (732-657-6661) or check Channel
12. We will try our best to keep this information up to date
on the progress of the snow removal.
If you have a two-car garage, your full driveway
will be cleared, up to the width of the double garage doors,
presuming you do not have a car or cars in your driveway. If
you do, they will only clear to two feet from the back of the
car or cars, and to the garage door if there is only one car.
If you have a single car garage but a double driveway,
before the season starts, DTE will indicate where the edge
of the double driveway is by placing markers (stakes) on
each side down by the street. This will help the machine
operator to see the edges and do the best job that he can.
If you driveway is not staked by mid-November, they may
have missed your driveway. Let the office know and they
will inform DTE.
It should take about twenty-four (24) hours per
foot of snow, from the time the snow stops, to clear every
driveway, depending upon the temperature. If less than a
foot, it will take less time. If you decide to remove the
snow from your driveway yourself, please wait until the
snow stops, because, as long as it is still snowing, the
plows are required to clear the roads and will place snow
at the entrance to your driveway. They will still come with
machines and complete the removal once the snow stops.
Doing it yourself does not entitle anyone to deduct that cost
from their Association fee. Under no circumstances should
you offer or accept an offer from Down to Earth employees
to “do your driveway”, since they are forbidden to do so
until their job is completely done.
If you have a complaint about how the snow was
removed or realize that your driveway or apron was
skipped, the sooner you let us know, the sooner we can get
DTE out to handle the issue. There are two ways: leave a
message on the Snow Hotline or call during office hours.
You should also write a letter if you call to report property
damage. It is repaired by Down to Earth as quickly as
possible following snow clearing and as weather permits.
The Board of Trustees and the staff are always looking
to improve service to our residents and many of the
suggestions which we have received in prior years have been
implemented, when possible. We will keep you updated
in each issue of the Knoll News, so please be sure to read
each issue.

Each time it snows during this Winter, the first street in each Section cleared of snow will become the last
one cleared for the next snow and the other streets will move up one place in the list. This will continue for all
subsequent snows, if any.
Remember: Driveways and Service Walks are not begun until the snow has stopped and all streets are cleared.
Also, they are not cleared unless at least three inches of snow accumulates on the surfaces. Ice melt is not applied
to Driveways or Service Walks by the contractor.
Protecting Your Home From Break-Ins
With the number of snow birds and with the various
problems here in the Knoll with break-ins, here are some
things to think about and possibly follow at your home.
Most are simple and are “no brainers.”
Anti-Burglary Tip No. 1: Don’t Advertise You’re
Away
The first thing a burglar looks for when choosing a
house for a break-in is one with no one in it. If you make
your house look occupied when you’re gone, most burglars
will simply pass it by. Here are some ways to do that.
• Use automatic light timers throughout the house
and have then turn on and off in a way that simulates
your normal patterns. Look for light timers that
have battery backup so the timer doesn’t stop if
there is a power failure. Using timers that have
more than one on-off cycle can create the illusion
of movement from room to room.
• The same kind of timers you use on lights can also
be used to turn radios or TVs on and off.
• Consider using timed automatic drape and curtain
openers. Drape that are always closed or always
open suggest no one is home.
• Turn the volume of your phone’s ringer down so
someone outside can’t hear them ring.
• If you can, have your calls forwarded while you’re
away. Burglars sometimes call to see if anyone’s
home before a break-in.
• Arrange to have your lawn cut or snow removed
from your walks if you’re going to be gone for a
long period.
• Instead of stopping your mail and newspaper
delivery, ask a neighbor to pick them up and hold
them for you. Seeing deliveries being made makes
a burglar think someone is home.
• Ask a neighbor to use your trash can from time to
time and to put it out at the curb and bring it back
on trash day.
• Always park your car in the garage with the garage
door closed when you are there. That way someone
watching for patterns won’t know your car isn’t
there when you’re gone.
• In the interest of home security, never leave notes
on the door. They just say to a burglar, “Come on
in.”
Anti-Burglary Tip No. 2: Make it Hard to Break In
The second thing burglars look for is easy access. The
harder it is for a burglar to get in, the less likely you are to
come back to a burglarized home.
• Never leave doors or windows unlocked, and never
hide a key to your house outside where it can be
easily found.

Use solid core or metal doors that are secured with
good quality deadbolt locks. Looks for or ask the
locksmith for door locks with an ANSI grade 1
rating. Deadbolt locks should have a horizontal bolt
at least 1 inch long. With shorter bolts, a burglar
can more easily use tools to spread the door frame
and open the door.
Consider using locks that have an internal anti-saw
pin that makes it difficult for a thief to saw through
the bolt with a hacksaw. Also, some locks come
with an anti-drill feature using hardened steel chips
inside the lock that will destroy a drill bit in case a
burglar tries to drill through the lock.
The casing, which is the outside housing of the lock,
should be made out of hardened steel and beveled. A
hardened steel casing makes the lock more resistant
to impact, and the beveling helps prevent a burglar
from using a pipe wrench to twist the lock free.
A metal strike plate is attached to the door jamb to
hold the bolt or latch in place. The most common
way for a thief to force a door open is to kick it open
by kicking at the plate. You can make this harder
by using a heavy four-screw high security strike
plate. The wood screws used to attach it should be
3 inches long. That way, they will go through the
jamb and be anchored in the door frame stud.
Using at least one long screw in attaching each
door hinge will further secure the door against
forced entry.
Treat a door between an attached garage and the
house as an outside door and use the same type of
locks that you use on the front and back door.
Any window or glass panel in the door that is closer
than 42 inches to the lock should be reinforced with
an invisible security film so a burglar can’t break
the glass and reach through to unlock the door.
Windows should be attached to a home security
alarm and have locks that operate from the inside
so they can be used for escape. Windows can also
be made stronger and safer by coating them with
an impact-resistant film.
Another home security measure for windows is to
install stops that prevent them from being opened
more than 6 inches. If you do, though, everyone in
the home needs to know how to remove the stops
to make an emergency exit.
Use a metal or wooden rod in the track on sliding
glass patio doors to prevent them from sliding open.
Never leave a ladder that can be used to access
the roof or a second story window outside or in an
unlocked shed.

Cut back tree limbs that hang over the roof, and
removed any lower branches from trees next to
the home.
Anti-Burglary Tip No. 3: Don’t Make It Easy to Hide
A burglar is more likely to try getting into a house where
there is less chance of being seen. Taking away the robbers’s
cover goes a long way toward protecting your house.
• Thieves can hide behind trees and shrubs. Trim
back or remove any shrubbery next to doors or
windows. If you are going to use plants next to the
house, you should use thorny plants such as holly
or roses.
• Use outside security lighting to illuminate
every access door. The main entrance should be
illuminated with a fixture that has two bulbs or with
two fixtures in case one bulb burns out.
• Use exterior lighting with motion detectors for the
year, driveway and other outside regions. If lights
come on when someone approaches, a burglar is
less likely to try breaking into your home. Also, if
the lights are activated by motion rather than being
left on all the time, your neighbors are more likely
to notice is someone is moving around your house.
• Remember the back and side of your home offer
some concealment for a burglar who is trying
to break in. So pay close attention to securing
all entrances, and if possible avoid installing a
tall privacy fence since that offers even greater
concealment.
Anti-Burglary Tip No. 4: Install a Home Security
Alarm System
Home security alarms are not a guarantee that burglars
will not enter your home. But they do make it more difficult
by increasing the risk that the burglar will be seen and
caught. If it’s obvious yur house is alarmed the burglar may
look for an easier target.
• Be sure to use the yard sign and window decals

Trio Arrested in Manchester Burglary Spree
Two Lakehurst men and a Toms River man have been charged in a string of
crimes in Leisure Knoll and River Pointe

been arrested in connection with a string of burglaries in
the Leisure Knoll and River Pointe communities in the last
few weeks, Manchester police said Tuesday.
Kevin M. Monahan, 19, of Union Avenue, Lakehurst;
Justin C. Hall, 27, of Manapaqua Avenue, Lakehurst, and
Frederick C. Monahan, 33, of Serine Street, Toms River,
are facing multiple counts of burglary, conspiracy, receiving
stolen property, criminal mischief, fencing, possession
of heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia and
hypodermic syringes, Manchester Lt. Vincent Manco said.
Between November and December, more than a halfdozen burglaries and attempted burglaries have occurred
in Leisure Knoll and River Pointe. All burglaries occured
with forced entry to either a door or window while the
homeowners were not at home. The homes were ransacked
December 2013.
All three men were lodged in Ocean County Jail. Bail
was set at $35,000, no 10 percent on Kevin M. Monahan,
$22,500, no 10 percent on Justin C. Hall and $7,500 no 10
percent on Frederick C. Monahan.
Assisting with the investigation were the Manchester
Township Police Patrol and Investigation Bureaus, Ocean
County Sheriff Department’s Crime Scene Investigations
Unit and K-9 Unit.
Although the most recent burglars have been arrested,
residents are reminded to immediately report suspicious
people and activity to Manchester Police by calling 732657-6111. Also, anonymous tips not requiring an immediate
police response can be placed on the Manchester Police

Power outages could cause a real danger, as well as
an inconvenience, for the residents of the Community,
especially at this time of year. You should be aware that
during electrical outages, if you find that you are effected
and are without heat, if Timberland Hall and Lakeside Lodge
have power, they are available for emergency use and, if
necessary, will be left open all night. Although there are
no sleeping facilities, it is hoped that they will have heat
and bathroom facilities. In an emergency, call office during
office hours at 732-657-6661 and the Gatehouse when
the office is closed at 732-657-5007 to inquire about their
availability. If you have a medical emergency during such
an outage, such as use of an oxygen tank which requires
electricity, you should call 911.

get ready for the next three months of frigid temperatures.

There have been changes to the interior of the main
building through the renovation of the Great Stair Hall
and dramatic improvements on how visitors will enter and
move through the museum. There has been the creation of
a substantial amount of new space for the display of more
works of art.
A major exhibition, Ink and Gold: Art of the Kano,
will be on display. It explores the stunning artistry of the
esteemed Kano painters, the most enduring and influential
school of painting in Japanese history. The lineage,
created in the fifteenth century, upheld standards of artistic
excellence for nearly five hundred years.
Another exhibition is entitled Drawn with Spirit:
Pennsylvania German Fraktur. One of the most admired
forms of American folk art, fractur are decorated Germanic
documents featuring brilliant colors and often whimsical
imagery.

We hope all had a Merry Christmas
and Happy Holidays. We are making
plans for programs for 2015. John Lacki,
President of L.K. Computer Club, attended our meeting and
we made plans to get together with them in early Spring and
have programs that show how cameras and computers work
well together, the new digital cameras are mini-computers.
We also are planning to have photo contests open to
all Leisure Knoll Residents. [Excluding Camera Club
Members] More information to follow later.
There will be a photo display by the Camera Club. The
residents will vote for their favorite in different categories.

In addition to word processing jobs like composing
monthly Computer Club articles for The Leisure Knoll
News, my computers help me to perform other tasks that
I might otherwise not do. They provide an easier and
sometimes fun way of accomplishing that which was once
too cumbersome to enjoy. They entertain me in other ways
as well.
Presently I have four active computers set up in different
areas of the house. There are two in my bedroom, a desktop
with Windows Vista and a laptop with Windows XP. The
desktop I use for practically everything from spread sheets
to articles to essays and short stories. I also use it to converse
on Face book, for sending and receiving emails and for
karaoke. It is my most versatile computer.
My bedroom laptop is used solely for my ITunes music
library. I download music to it, make CD’s from it and pair
my cell phone with it so that I am able to play the ITune
selections through my car stereo system while driving to
and from Alaska and Hawaii. All I need to accomplish
this feat is to have my paired cell phone in my car with me
whenever I venture forth.
My third computer is a laptop as well. It has Windows

The Computer Club has been busy with making
some changes to the by-laws. We are trying to bring
our by-law “articles” up-to-date with the mindset of the
membership. We are hoping to make our club interesting
and helpful to the “Knoll” community.
This month, we will be having only two meetings. We
will have our regular Business Meeting on January 12. We
will not be meeting on January 19 due to the observance of
Martin Luther King’s Birthday. On January 26th, we will
be, once again, hosting Ms. Kelly Czupkiewicz, Senior
Librarian from our own Manchester Branch of the Ocean
County Library. Kelly will be giving a presentation on
“Facebook” with the many facets of how to use it and what
to do with it. The members of the Club will agree that
Kelly does a great job with her presentations and she is
worth coming out to hear and see. Any residents of Leisure
Knoll are welcome to come out to our club meetings--of
course, we would like you to join our club and become a
regular member.

Several of our members participated in the 13th annual
Surf Fishing Tournament sponsored by the Hudson River
Fisherman’s Association. Unfortunately, the fishing was
less than great but the camaraderie made the day worthwhile.
We’re in the process of forming a committee to help Ray
plan the Kid’s Fishing Tournamentcoming in July. All input
is valuable and welcome. If you’re interested in helping
plan this much anticipated annual event please contact Ray

Another year has come and gone. It’s hard to believe
the crazy fact that the heat of the summer has turned to
the white fluffy stuff of the winter season. However, the
summer brought us our healthy plants and flowers and now
the dormancy period of winter will lead to a new beginning
of 2015 for plants and family and friends alike.
Jo Caruso as President decided to “give back” to
our membership. She and her board have done exactly
that! Our Christmas luncheon was a huge part of her
plan, gifting a $10 savings for that amazing luncheon to
all of the 2014 members who attended. The delightful
“in house” luncheon, catered by “Terry’s Catering”
in our brand new PAC, was a good call. It was enjoyed
immensely by all.
At this luncheon our traditional changing of the officers
took place. During this special ceremony the “out-going”
board passed a candle to each member of the “in-coming”
board as each new member is sworn in. Those who received
the candles agreed to the duties of their position as our club
continues to thrive into the future with dedicated people at
the helm.

Our Annual Christmas party was held on Wednesday,
December 10th. Those of us who attended I am sure had
a good time.
Winter is upon us. Be careful walking and if the weather
permits try walking around the block. Fresh air and exercise
makes us feel better, relieves stress and helps get a good
night’s sleep. Did you know that “Honey”, contains a lot
of healthful benefits. Honey is fantastic cough suppressant,
helps support the immune system. Honey also is a good
source of calcium, iron, potassium and zinc. Most of all it
is all natural.
Hope you all had a great holiday, whether with family
or friends. If you are not a member of Health and Fitness,
please think about joining. We present many interesting
programs and most of the time we have a speaker. There is
always coffee and cake after our meetings. We meet only
four times a year. It’s a chance to learn about Health and
Fitness, to meet new people and to make friends. Hope to
see some new faces in the coming year.

Well let’s all welcome in the New Year 2015 and make it
the best year ever. I am sure everyone had a nice Christmas
and hopefully all the children received the gifts they asked
for from Santa. I am sure grandpa & grandma did their part
in making it a joyous Christmas for their grandchildren.
Christmas & New Years is a time for celebrating with family
and friends, but it is also a time to remember the birth of
The Christ Child. The Lord sent His only Son down to us
so that we could be redeemed. It is a joyous event for all
Christians that should be celebrated accordingly; so, if you
haven’t already done so, take a little time to give The Lord
the proper thanks for what has been bestowed upon you.
I am looking at the calendar and it appears that the
past few months the PAC has been quiet except for a few
Christmas events and New Years Eve parties, so hopefully
this will change in the immediate future. We need to supply
the community with entertainment so we don’t become a
bunch of shut-ins during the winter season.
I would like to show my appreciation for those who
put up all the “Christmas Decorations” in the PAC &
Lakeside Lodge and especially those responsible for our
Tree Lighting Ceremony. Many thanks for a job well done
and God Bless you all.
I am so grateful to have attended The Tree Lighting
Ceremony and complement those who had braved the
weather to be there because it was such a festive event.
After a ceremony in the rain, the tree was lit, and we all
entered the PAC for refreshments and entertainment only
to be wowed by the Donovan Catholic School Chorus with
some rather blissful Christmas tunes. All I can say is they
were awesome and left me reeling! I can actually commend
them for giving me the Christmas Spirit.
As most of you know, the Leisure Knoll Homeowners
Association Trustees have begun to enforce a tenant of our
regulations that limit clubs to two paid events per calendar

year. This might severely impact our ability to raise funds.
Every year we donate to various charities in and around the
Knoll. As you can imagine, there is no way we can continue
to make these types of donations if we cannot have events
to bring in funds to the Council. During the past two years,
we have donated $1,000 to the Activities Committee. This
past year we have donated $500 to the Ridgeway Fire
Department, we donated $500 to the Manchester First Aid
(our Ambulance Service), we donated $1,000 to Providence
House (for unwed mothers and their infant care), we donated
$1,000 to the St Vincent de Paul Society at St John’s Church,
We have donated to Wounded Warriors, Chariot Riders,
ARC of Ocean County, and each year we donate $1,000 to
Father Bernie’s Scholarship fund. All these donations and
others that come along where we vote to give funds during
our meetings are all in jeopardy of going away. If anyone
has any recommendations for fund raisers off campus or
perhaps holding a combined event with another club or
activity, this can help us to support some of our causes.
The Grand Knight also mentioned that he will not
continue as our Grand Knight after the end of his term,
which will end in June. We are a community of strong
Brother Knights, and one will step up and take charge. We
have been here in The Knoll for twenty-five strong years,
raising funds for Charity, and we would like to continue
for at least another twenty-five years. Please note it is only
with the support of The Leisure Knoll Community that we
have had such success and we are grateful and hopeful to
continue with such a pleasurable relationship. God Bless
you all for your support.
Our Chancellor has done research concerning shirts
with the Knights of Columbus logo. The results of the cost
and description plus the order form can be found in the
December edition of The Carillon. It was a suggestion that
all members might want to purchase the shirts and wear
them to the general meeting to show our “Unity.” If you
have any questions regarding the shirts please direct them
to Vinny Spera.

Knollaires
The Knollaires last concert was performed on December
6th and December 7th.
We Knollaires would like to thank all of our Leisure
Knoll friends for their support and joyous response to our
program. We have always enjoyed the preparation needed
for our Holiday shows. Linda Ashby our director has
repeatedly done a wonderful job in choosing the musical
pieces for our programs. Music that expressed the joy in
the hearts of all for the holiday season .
The New Year 2015 is upon us and we Knollaires wish
you all a happy and healthy one. We shall all go forward
with a joyous song in our hearts.
The sound of the Knollaires now will be just a fleeting
memory of times and friendships dear and joyful harmony. We sang our songs in spring and fall for many years gone
by. We’ll sing them all within our hearts remembering with
a sigh. We’ll keep our memories so dear for auld lang syne.

The wind is blowing, the snow is snowing but we can
weather the storm as long as we have each other to keep us
warm. The January meeting will have Pat Fratangelo from
Rand’s Surgical as guest speaker. He will tell us seniors
about Medicare. What we need to know about how it can
work for us. If you have any questions, write them down
and bring them with you to the meeting.
Joe DiMaggio was simply the greatest all-around
baseball player of his era, which was the last before
integration changed the complexion of the game in the
1950s. As a New York baseball legend, “The Yankee
Clipper” succeeded superstars Babe Ruth and Lou
Gehrig and preceded Mickey Mantle. In his 15 year career
from 1935 to 1951 (which was interrupted by three years
spent in the Army during World War Two from 1943-45),
DiMaggio won three Most Valuable Player awards and was
named to the All-Star team thirteen times.
Joe played his entire career in Yankee Stadium, the
“House that Ruth Built”, so called not only due to the Babe’s
great popularity, but also because the park was tailored to
his left-handed power. Joe DiMaggio was a right-handed
hitter in a park that was death to righties: left-center field at
Yankee Stadium in 1937 was 457 feet deep (whereas now,
it is 399 feet deep). As DiMaggio and Ted Williams aged,
it became dogma that while Williams was the better hitter,
DiMaggio was the better all-around player.
In 1969, a poll conducted to coincide with the centennial
of major league baseball ranked him as baseball’s greatest
living player. The great Joe DiMaggio, whom many believe
was the most perfect and most complete ballplayer of all
time.
I grew up with my hero, Mickey Mantle. I never saw
Joe play, but I’ve been told that he never dove for a fly
ball. He seemed to always get a good jump on the flies to
centerfield so his smooth gliding approach always made
him look like every catch was so easy. Mantle was built solid, his speed was exceptional. His
power was evident in his swing. He could belt a baseball
a mile.

MUSIC TOURS
HI EVERYONE,
We finished up last year on a positive note. We
were on four different trips and saw a variety of music:
“WILLIE NELSON”, “TRIBUTE TO RODGERS AND
HAMMERSTEIN”, “NEWSIES” and “A CHRISTMAS
SPECTACULAR”. We all enjoyed the shows and had fun
eating together and enjoying the good food at the different
restaurants.
I want to welcome the new members who joined our
club and anyone who has shown an interest and would like
to join.
Hopefully there will be an iterniery for the spring that
will please our members and bring us together for more
Music and Fun.
There will not be a meeting in January, we will
resume on Wednesday, February 18th, 10am, at Lakeside
Lodge, with events that we can vote for. Please bring your
checkbooks. We might have something to go to in March.

HAPPY NEW YEAR. Here we are starting off another
year. We are sure you all had a wonderful Christmas and
Hankukkah.
Our Christmas/Holiday Party was a tremendous
success. All our members came out in droves to help us
celebrate. Entertainment by the D-Cees was hot to trot
and we all got our fair share of exercise dancing to their
music, which kept us hopping the whole evening. We had a
cookie exchange and boy did those cookies come streaming
in. It was so hard to make the choice of which cookies to
partake. They all looked so appetizing. A big thank you to
all who took time either to bake or shop for all these goodies.
Sandwiches were also served and we all brought our own
snacks, so there was plenty of everything to go around.
Before the festivities began there was a short meeting
at which time Claire Gauer, who chaired the Nominating
Committee, introduced the new Board, which is as follows:

have it completed by our January meeting. We plan to have
some wonderful trips along with interesting guest speakers.

Veterans Club
Goodbye 2014 and Hello 2015. The
year of 2014 has been a fantastic one for the
Leisure Knoll Veterans Club. Just to name a
few successful events:
We honored the spouses of deceased Veterans in the
community on Memorial Day We had over 70 spouses that
we honored and that was an amazing feat. The response from
the community was amazing. There was a pouring out of
thanks to our club for this accomplishment.
We had our 2nd annual dance which was great.
We honored our own World War II Veterans and their
spouses. We also had a full showing of colors with a Color
Guard on Veterans Day. That was a beautiful site to see.
We introduced our own Honor Guard to the community
and explained its mission and purpose to all who attended.
We had the Joe Martella Honor Flight for World War
II and Korean Veterans.
We had our own personal tour of the Lakehurst
Naval station. Visiting the museums and the “Hindenburg
Disaster” location, which was very educational.
The board and I are proud to be the leaders of this great
Club. With the help of its members we look forward to the
year 2015. We are in the progress of discussing events for
the community. For example, the upcoming ceremony for
Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and our 3rd annual dance.
Please always remember that we will need volunteers to
help us achieve our goals. Do not be too shy to volunteer.
I’ve noticed that we always see the same faces at our
meetings... and the same people are volunteering for our
events. I want to see more faces at our meetings. I will
need more volunteers for this upcoming year, so don’t be
shy. Come out to our meetings and enjoy some of Andy’s
coffee and donuts.
I believe that proper leadership must always think
ahead. However some of the goals that are set are difficult
to achieve without the help of the membership. Always
keep in mind that we do things for our members and for
the community we live in. Your board works very hard to
achieve the goals we set forth. That is why I am confident
that each year that passes we get stronger in our membership
and in our community. As it stands, we are over 100 strong
and getting stronger.
Between January and March 31, 2015, we will be
collecting dues. Please make sure that you pay your
$10.00 before the end of March. You can see Noel Blanch
(Membership Chair) at our next 3 meetings.
On another note:
With the board approval,it was decided to appoint Lew
Jones as our 1st Vice President. I know Lew has the ability
and knowledge to help us achieve some of our goals in the
upcoming year. The leadership that Lew has as a Green
Beret will only be a benefit to our club. Lew and I will
definitely be working close in the year 2015. Lew has the
ambition, drive, determination of achieving goals. He will
be an asset to our organization. Thanks Lew for stepping
up to the plate.
This year will be a voting year for the board members.
Please try to attend our meetings which are held on the
third Thursday of every month. We will be having guest
speakers who will be giving you vital information. So pick
up a buddy or a non-member and get him to join this great
club we call the Leisure Knoll Veterans Club.

LETTER TO A FRIEND

Dear one:
My letter to you begins, and will probably end, with
a question: Why in the world would I choose you, of all
people, to receive this particular correspondence? You, a
person I haven’t heard from in too many years; someone
who disappeared from my life in bits and pieces; someone
whom I thought I let go of a long time ago. Do you think
of me sometimes… ever? Even though I try not to dwell on
us, our friendship, our almost “sisterhood” if you will, your
face still pops into my head. Some small thing, a song, a
scent or a word, will propel you once again into my mind’s
eye. Even so, my question remains, why did I choose you?
Although we came from different ethnic backgrounds
(of which our parents subtly kept reminding us), we were
the closest of friends when becoming young ladies at the
tender age of 13. Although our fathers were middle class
white collar working men struggling to make ends meet,
and our mothers were “stay-at-home moms”- when that
expression hadn’t even been invented yet – you and I tried
to keep up with the Joneses in our own little corner of the
world. (Although you tried harder than I.)
You were part of my family, and I was part of yours. We
were so comfortable with one another, almost like wrapping
oneself in a soft, cotton quilt. We shared everything then.
Went to the beach together; listened to Johnny Mathis
together – I recall your favorite song was “The Twelfth of
Never”. Do you, by any chance, remember mine? Can
you recollect those crazy summer vacations and winter skitrips when we were 18 and 19; we took too many chances
and somehow got ourselves home unscathed, never telling
our parents our secrets? How about when we painted our
bedroom furniture black and red? Or how we smoked in
the balcony at the movies and hid packs of Newports at
the bottom of our closets? Do you realize that I still worry
about your smoking habit, even today? Do you ever think
about my health…do you even care?
Are your parents still alive, and how are your children?
Are you a grandmother yet? God, we’re missing out on so
much. Do you ever hear from your ex? Did he know that
you came to me when he left you alone with an infant? Do
you realize that I was literally sick to my stomach worrying
about you? Even though we were the best of friends, it was
unusual for someone as guarded as you to tell me of such
a personal, disturbing occurrence, when you were always
such a private person. But despite everything, I could do
nothing else but to stand by you. After all, isn’t that what
friends are for?
But when the time came that I needed you, my friend,
you weren’t there for me. When I was so down you
stopped calling and didn’t visit. I was confused and upset,
wondering what had happened. When you finally got in
touch, you said that I “just wasn’t my old fun, happy self”,
and that you “just couldn’t bear to see me in that way”.
My disappointment was beyond belief as I came to fully
understand the meaning of the words Fair Weather Friend.
After a time, I decided to forgive and forget, but you were
unavailable – “Unknown Address”. People told me to
simply let you go, that nothing lasts forever. So I forced
myself to push you away. It wasn’t as difficult as I thought
it would be, because when one is angry it’s easier to close
that door. But not on the memories. They tend to hang on,
sometimes healing, sometimes opening old wounds. Be
that as it may, I’m not angry anymore, just sad over a loss
that I could never understand, or fully accept for that matter.
You always said that I was too sensitive and could get hurt.
How right you were.
It seems as though this letter is full of questions with
no answers. However, as I reach the closing, a light bulb
goes on in my brain and I do have the answer to why I chose
you, of all people, to receive my letter. It doesn’t take a
therapist to see that it is simply because deep down, I still
care. I guess I always will.

SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY
Massachusetts passed the country’s first mandatory
school attendance law in 1647. If folks couldn’t afford
tuition, they had to donate wood to help build new
schoolhouses.
President Roosevelt lowered the minimum draft age
from 21 to 18 in 1942. The move immediately sparked a
grass roots effort to drop the voting age too but it would take
another 28 years for that amendment to be passed.
Kenny Rogers kicked off a six week run at the top of
the billboard charts in 1980 with “Lady”, a song written
by Lionel Riche. It was the first single of the decade to hit
number one on the pop, country, adult, contemporary and
R&B charts.
A flash of red hair, flick of a film and children and adults
were immediately transfixed when Disney’s The Little
Mermaid landed in theaters in 1989. Animators originally
wrote the role of the sea witch, Ursula, for Bea Arthur but
she was too busy filming Golden Girls to lend her voice to
the film, so Pat Carroll stepped into the role.

Feet hit theaters in 2005. Nicole Kidman, who starred as
the voice of the soft spoken penguin, Norma Jean tackled
a more regal role in the drama, Grace of Monaco due out
the next year.

Fanny Brice returned for her second Shubert show. It
was her 15th and final Broadway show with a number of
holdovers from the 1934 edition. Ballet choreographers
made their debut a smash and she was up her old shtick,
kidding modern dancing and playing Baby Snooks with
Bob Hope getting a chance to butter up Eve Arden in the
classic “I Can’t Get Started.” Music by Vernon Duke and
Ira Gershwin helped out at the Winter Garden in January
1936. What enjoyment! What a time!

Sudoku
Sudoku requires no calculation or arithmetic skills. It is essentially a game of placing numbers in
squares, using very simple rules of logic and deduction.
The objective of the game is to fill all the blank squares in a game with the correct numbers. There
are three very simple constraints to follow. In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game:
• Every row of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order
• Every column of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order
• Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include all digits 1 through 9
Every Sudoku games begins with a number of squares already filled in, and the difficulty of each
game is largely a function of how many squares are filled in. The more squares that are known,
the easier it is to figure out which numbers go in the open squares. As you fill in squares correctly,
options for the remaining squares are narrowed and it becomes easier to fill them in.

The cold weather makes it hard to get motivated
to go outdoors and shoot, but there are some great
photo opportunities to be had in winter. Make
certain you dress for the cold and watch for ice!
Even when there is no snow, icy pond make
great subjects. Look for ducks, geese, or sea
gulls standing on the ice. Ice also makes for great
reflection images. Many normal scenes take on a
new meaning in the cold of winter
After a snowfall there are great shots
everywhere. The challenge with snow shots is
getting the proper exposure. A very bright snowy
scene tricks you camera into thinking there is
too much light, so the camera will cut back on
exposure. This makes the snow in your images
look gray. If you know how to set your exposure
compensation, increase the exposure by 1 stop
to brighten the snow. If your camera has “scene”
modes, use the one for snow or beach.
The bare leafless trees make nice silhouette
shots and are very good for black and white
photography. They are especially effective with a
sunrise or sunset behind them.
