Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley Announces 2014/2015 Season

Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley’s 15 Season inaugurates Bodies of Technology repertory program: an
exploration of dance in the digital age featuring two world premieres by Amy Seiwert and Yuri Zhukov,
plus a return of audience favorite Jessica Lang’s Eighty One…Other highlights include three
masterworks: Theme and Variations by George Balanchine, a Company premier of Fancy Free by
Jerome Robbins and, back by popular demand, Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room…The Season also
features two story ballets: Family favorite Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella, and the return of Silicon Valley’s
holiday tradition, The Nutcracker by Karen Gabay.
San Jose, CA, August 19, 2014 – Artistic Director, José Manuel Carreño today announced the
2014/2015 Season lineup for Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley (BSJSV). The 15th Season for the
Company features two world premieres by choreographers Amy Seiwert and Yuri Zhukov, as
well as the Company premiere of Fancy Free by Jerome Robbins. Acclaimed works returning to
the stage include In the Upper Room by Twyla Tharp and George Balanchine’s virtuosic Theme
and Variations. Rounding out the Season are two full-length classics and fan favorites, Karen
Gabay’s The Nutcracker and Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella.
Of special note, during the 2014/2015 Season, Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley will inaugurate
Bodies of Technology, an innovative choreographic program that celebrates dance in the digital
age. With performances in March 2015, at the California Theatre in San Jose, this program
brings together artists, musicians, dancers, and technologists to collaborate in new ways of
presenting and viewing dance performance. The Bodies of Technology program will also include
Jessica Lang’s Eighty One, a world premiere for Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley in 2013.

Choreographer and former Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley Principal Dancer Karen Gabay’s The
Nutcracker is a delightful take on the holiday classic, preserving the best of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s
traditional story about the Nutcracker Prince and the Mouse King. Glorious bravura dancing and
good-enough-to-eat sets and costumes, come together with Tchaikovsky’s lush, iconic score to
give a fresh touch to this beautiful love story.

Featuring the timeless music of Leonard Bernstein, the thrilling Company premiere of Jerome
Robbins’ Fancy Free celebrates friendship as three sailors on leave dance their way through
good-natured competition and rejection, but together, they triumph in the end. In contrast,
Theme and Variations highlights George Balanchine as the consummate ballet classicist in a
program that demands exquisite technique from the entire cast, and the dancers of Ballet San
Jose Silicon Valley are up to the challenge. Finally, Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room, which
played to full houses and standing ovations last Season, is back by popular demand.

does this growing enmeshment between humans and technology find artistic expression? That

A delightful mix of classic storybook elements: a beautiful fairy godmother, a pumpkin turned
into a fine coach, an elaborate palace ball, and one glittering, lost glass slipper. In keeping with
ballet tradition, the men of Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley will dance the coveted roles of the ugly
stepsisters with cross-dressing humor, adding to the romance, comedy, and magic for all ages,
from one to 101.
About Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley
Known for bold and inventive programming that matches the creativity and innovation of its
high-tech home base, Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley is one of the two largest professional ballet
companies in California. In 2013/2014, new Artistic Director José Manuel Carreño won great
critical acclaim for his inaugural season, and the Company also named its first Chief Executive
Officer, Alan Hineline, who is the former head of the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and
Ballet Philippines. Hineline, Carreño and Associate Artistic Director Raymond Rodriguez, form
the core of the Company’s Executive and Artistic team.
The Company produces an annual Season of mixed-repertory programs and full-length ballets,
including The Nutcracker, primarily at the Center for the Performing Arts, San Jose.
Through its strategic relationship with American Ballet Theatre (ABT), the Ballet San Jose
Silicon Valley School has rapidly advanced artistically. The School is the exclusive ABT-certified
institution on the West Coast and offers access to ABT’s renowned National Training Curriculum
for ballet faculty and more than 350 students enrolled in its rigorous program. Students begin as
young as three years old and can continue to the pre-professional level. During 2014, two
student trainees from the School will join the Company as Apprentices.

under the leadership of Artistic Director Dennis Nahat. The San Jose Cleveland Ballet spanned
the two cities for nearly 15 years before Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley was re-established in
