Applications for Admission
to Namaste Charter School
St. Barbara Students
Help Veterans
Open Houses are being held at Namaste Charter School. Namaste Charter School
applications for K-8th grade students for the 2015-2016 school year are due by
March 6th, 2015 at 4pm.
Open House dates for Namaste Charter School are: Thursday, January 15, 2015
from 5:00-6:30pm; Tuesday, February 3, 2015 from 5:00-6:30pm and Saturday, February 21, 2015 from 11:00-12:30pm.
Namaste Charter School is holding open houses to answer questions about the
school and admissions process. Namaste Charter School is located at 3737 S. Paulina
St.
Namaste Charter School opened in the fall of 2004 with 90 kindergarten and first
graders and currently serves 485 students in grades K-8. It is accepting applications
for students entering K-8th grades for the fall of 2015. Namaste’s curriculum is designed to feed both the minds and the bodies of its students. “Our mission is to provide a learning environment for students that offers ample opportunity for them to
thrive both mentally and physically, increasing their potential for academic success,”
said Allison Slade, the school’s founder.
The school’s success has been lauded in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times,
on NBC’s The Today Show, CNN and many other media outlets. The principal attributes much of the school’s success to the incredibly dedicated staff and families
of Namaste Charter School. Applications for the new class of Namaste students are
already being accepted and will continue until March 6th at 4pm. Namaste Charter
School is open to all Chicago residents. The school offers a dual language program
option, a school day running from 8:30am-4pm and after school programming.
Namaste Charter School was founded with the vision of using health, physical
fitness and nutrition as an avenue to reach higher student achievement. All students
receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at school, 60 minutes of physical education
daily and daily time for recess. Due to its elongated day, students receive instruction in balanced literacy, mathematics, science, social studies and physical education.
Applications for Namaste are available on the school’s website (www.namastecharterschool.org) and at the school’s main office at 3737 S. Paulina. All applications MUST be submitted by March 6th at 4pm. For more information and an
application form, call 773-715-9558 or visit www.namastecharterschool.org.
Student Council Officers, Kylie Jasas, Jose Castaneda, Anthony Skokal and
Adrian Gonzalez load the Christmas gifts for the veterans.
During the month of December, the students of St. Barbara collected new white
athletic socks and t-shirts for the veterans at the Jesse Brown Veterans’ Medical Center on south Damen Ave. St. Barbara families were very generous and several boxes
of items went over to the hospital on the last day of school before the break. All of the students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade also sent a personal
wish and Christmas card to be distributed to the veterans with their gifts.
The drive was organized by first grade teacher, Susan Foley. The Student Council loaded the van and preschool teacher, Julia MacKerell helped with the delivery.
The event is all part of this year’s focus to show our appreciation to the veterans
who have and continue to make our freedom possible.
Tilden’s Class of 2015
Prepares for College
The Class of 2015 at Tilden High School has been
busy the past two months preparing for life after graduation. College application season began in early October.
Between Oct. through mid-Dec. students in the senior class have collectively submitted 626 college applications, an average of 7 applications per senior. Colleges that seniors are applying to include the University
of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Northern Illinois University, Western Illinois University, Chicago State, DePaul University, Dominican University and University
of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).
On December 10, seniors participated in Tilden’s 3rd
Annual Senior Day of Action. The full day event consisted of post-secondary workshops, a panel discussion
with Tilden alumni who are currently in college and interviews with volunteers from the business and professional community. In the interviews students presented
their senior portfolios to volunteers and discussed their
post-secondary plans. Volunteers then provided feedback to the students about how to ensure their success
and overcome roadblocks.
At the top of Tilden’s
senior class is James
Davis, local resident and
alum of Graham Elementary. Davis, who is considering a career in pharmacy or civil engineering,
has applied to seventeen
schools, including Lake
Forest College, Illinois
Institute of Technology
(IIT), UIC and Ohio State
University.
“Applying to so many
colleges has really kept
me busy. It’s fun to explore different possibilities and plan for the future. I
look forward to life after graduation.”

St. Rita High School 2015
Illinois State Scholar
St. Rita High School Principal Brendan Conroy is
pleased to announce that 19 St. Rita High School students
from the graduating class of 2015 have been recognized as
Illinois State Scholars.
The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), the
state agency committed to helping to make college accessible and affordable for Illinois families, bestows this prestigious recognition to top Illinois high school students
annually. This year, over 18,800 elite honorees join the
other top state students honored for their academic achievements since the designation was first introduced in 1958.
Illinois State Scholars represent approximately the top
ten percent of high school seniors, hailing from 671 different high schools across the state. Selection is based on SAT,
ACT or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores, and/or
class rank at the end of the junior year. High school guidance counselors work with ISAC to determine the winners.
Principal Conroy says, “St. Rita High School is pleased
to recognize our 19 Illinois State Scholars. Their academic
accomplishments are indicative of the well-rounded, college-preparatory education Ritamen receive. As their college acceptances and scholarships also keep coming in, we
are confident that they will continue to flourish beyond the
halls of St. Rita, as well. Their futures are indeed very
bright.”
The following St. Rita High School student named 201516 Illinois State Scholars from our area is Nicholas Argy
(St. Gabriel School).
“It is with great pride that we announce this year’s group
of Illinois State Scholars,” said Eric Zarnikow, ISAC Executive Director. “In addition to congratulating our State
Scholars for their commitment and hard work, we also want
to commend their parents, teachers, coaches and mentors
for helping these students achieve their goals. It really does
take a village.”
Zarnikow continued, “ISAC wishes all of the scholars
at St. Rita High School the best as they pursue their future
education and careers.”
While this distinguished recognition does not include a
monetary prize, recipients are encouraged to cite the honor
on applications for college admission and scholarships. In
addition, students are urged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible
after January 1st. The FAFSA determines eligibility for federal and state aid, including Illinois’ need-based Monetary
Award Program (MAP) grant, as well as for many forms of
aid offered through colleges.
A calendar of free financial aid and college access events,
including FAFSA completion workshops to assist students
and families with the form, is available on ISAC’s website,
www.ISAC.org. Students can visit the agency’s website for
a wealth of additional financial aid and college planning information and tools, as well as applications for grants and
scholarships administered by ISAC. In addition, students
can find out how to access free one-on-one assistance and
mentoring in the college-going process.

Gas Companies Remind Residents to
Stay Safe During Winter Storms
The Chicagoland area winter weatherthat includes sub-zero temperatures and significant snow accumulation.
Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas remind residents and businesses that it is important to keep the area around
natural gas meters, regulators and piping clear from snow and ice to help ensure the safe and continuous operation of heating equipment.
Deep snow and ice buildup around gas meters can lead to meter damage, equipment malfunction and a disruption in service. Simply brushing deep snow away from the meter and regulator with a soft broom is sufficient. Never use a shovel or motorized snow removal equipment near a natural gas meter. Customers with high-efficiency furnaces and water heaters that vent through the wall (not into a chimney)
should prevent the buildup of snow or ice outside around the vent. High-efficiency equipment provides great
savings, but a blocked vent could cause the heating system to malfunction by shutting off or, in extreme cases,
lead to an accumulation of carbon monoxide in the home. Customers should check the outside vents just to make
sure they aren’t covered with snow or ice and call Peoples Gas at (866) 556-6001 or North Shore Gas at (866)
556-6004 in cases of heavy ice buildups around the vents.
The winter season is also the time of year when utilities receive the highest number of carbon monoxide-related calls, often due to faulty heating equipment. Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning can result from improper
and/or inefficient burning of natural gas and other fuels that can result from blocked furnace vents and/or insufficient ventilation. CO is an invisible, tasteless, odorless, poisonous gas that cannot be detected by human senses. At high concentrations, carbon monoxide can be fatal within minutes. Customers who experience flu-like
symptoms only when at home should leave the home and arrange for a carbon monoxide check from their local
emergency agency immediately. Illinois law requires every home or apartment to have a CO alarm within 15
feet of sleeping areas.
As a reminder, natural gas meters need to be inspected regularly as a safety precaution. If your meter is located inside your home or building, Peoples Gas or North Shore Gas will contact you to make an appointment when
your inspection is due. Failure to allow your meter to be inspected could result in disconnection as a safety precaution, even during the cold winter months. Customers should make sure to respond to any letters requesting
access to a meter when contacted.
For more tips on safety around natural gas, including tips on CO safety, please visit our website at www.
peoplesgasdelivery.com or www.northshoregasdelivery.com.

21 Winter Safety Tips
to Keep Families Safe and Warm
According to the National Weather Service, extreme cold and winter storms in 2013 resulted in 46 deaths and extensive disruptions for thousands of families. With another cold
blast this week, the nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) offers 21 winter
safety and power outage tips to keep families safe and warm.
Affordable Ways to Protect Your Home
For as little as $1 per 6’ of insulation, you can stop pipes from freezing during winter
and even when the power goes out.
1. Insulate pipes exposed to the elements or cold drafts with insulating foam. For as little as $1 per 6’ of insulation, you can stop pipes from freezing and save energy.
2. Place an insulating dome or other covering on outdoor faucets and spigots to reduce
the likelihood of the water in your pipes freezing, expanding and causing a costly leak.
3. Drip faucets to reduce the build-up of pressure in the pipes. Even if the pipes freeze,
you have released the pressure from the water system reducing the likelihood of a rupture.
If you are going out of town, and suspect that temperatures will drop or a power outage
will occur, turn off the water to your home and open all of the taps to drain the water system. This way you won’t return to a frozen, soggy mess.
4. Check for air leaks around windows and doors using a lit incense stick. If the smoke
is sucked out of an opening, seal the leak with caulk, spray foam or weather stripping.
Keep Your Family Safe & Warm
5. Keep a supply of flashlights, batteries and a battery-powered radio on hand. Do not
use candles as they pose a fire hazard.
6. After the power goes out, make sure to turn off all lights but one, to alert you when
power resumes.
7. Resist the temptation to call 911 for information during power outages. Instead use
your battery-powered radio for information.
8. Keep your car fuel tank at least half full as gas stations rely on electricity to operate
their pumps and may not have back-up power.
9. Keep extra cash on hand since an extended power outage may prevent you from withdrawing money from ATMs or banks.
10. Be a snow angel. Volunteer to check on elderly neighbors, friends, or relatives who
may need assistance during the outage.
11. Wear layers of loose fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of
heavy clothing. The outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellent. Never
burn charcoal for heating or cooking indoors.
12. If you are using a gas heater or fireplace to stay warm, be sure the area is properly
ventilated.
13. Arrange ahead of time with family, friends, or neighbors for a place to go if you
have an extended outage. If you have nowhere to go, head to a designated public shelter.
Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter in your area
(example: shelter 12345)
Food
14. Keep a supply of non-perishable foods, medicine, baby supplies, and pet food on
hand, and have at least one gallon of water per person per day on hand.
15. Avoid opening the fridge or freezer. Food should be safe as long as the outage lasts
no more than four hours.
Generators
16. Do not run a generator inside a home or garage. Use gas-powered generators only
in well-ventilated areas.
17. Follow manufacturer’s instructions such as only connect individual appliances to
portable generators.
18. Don’t plug emergency generators into electric outlets or hook them directly to your
home’s electrical system as they can feed electricity back into the power lines, putting you
and line workers in danger.
19. Consider purchasing and installing a permanent home generator with an automatic
on switch.
When Power Returns
20. When power comes back on, it may come back with momentary “surges” or
“spikes” that can damage equipment such as computers and motors in appliances like the
air conditioner, refrigerator, washer or furnace. Be sure to install a system of surge protection that consists of point-of-use devices and whole house surge protection.
21. When power is restored, wait a few minutes before turning on major appliances to
help eliminate potential problems caused from sharp increases in demand.

Take Extra Precautions
As Temperatures Drop
Below Freezing
Dangerously low temperatures are in the forecast
and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
wants individuals and families to be safe when faced
with the hazards of cold temperatures.
“Subfreezing temperatures can be dangerous and
even life-threatening for people who don't take the
proper precautions,” said Andrew Velasquez III,
FEMA Regional Administrator. “It is important for
everyone to monitor their local weather reports and
take steps now to stay safe during times of extreme
cold temperatures.”
During cold weather, you should take the following
precautions:
• Stay indoors as much as possible and limit your
exposure to the cold;
• Dress in layers and keep dry;
• Check on family, friends, and neighbors who are at
risk and may need additional assistance;
• Know the symptoms of cold-related health issues
such as frostbite and hypothermia and seek medical
attention if health conditions are severe.
• Bring your pets indoors or ensure they have a warm
shelter area with unfrozen water.
• Make sure your vehicle has an emergency kit that
includes an ice scraper, blanket and flashlight – and
keep the fuel tank above half full.
You can find more information and tips on being
ready for winter weather and extreme cold temperatures at http://www.ready.gov/winter.
FEMA's mission is to support our citizens and first
responders to ensure that as a nation we work together
to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare
for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.
*****
We are both burdened and blessed by the great responsibility of free will - the power of choice. Our future
is determined, in large part, by the choices we make
now.

Philly Vazzana from Canaryville
and 18 Other Junior Home Cooks Took
Over the Kitchen on the “Masterchef
Junior” Premiere on January 6th
The kids are back and taking over the kitchen. Among
them is Phillip “Philly” Vazzana, age 9 of Canaryville.
Host and award-winning chef Gordon Ramsay and fellow judges restaurateur Joe Bastianich and acclaimed
chef Graham Elliot welcomed Philly along with 18 other
best junior home cooks in the country between the ages
of 8 and 13. The field includes two 8-year-olds; four 9year-olds; three 10-year-olds; five 11-year-olds and five
12-year-olds – to the MASTERCHEF JUNIOR kitchen,
where they will compete for the MASTERCHEF JUNIOR trophy and the $100,000 grand prize.
Philly’s signature dish is Chicken Marsala with
Mushrooms, Pasta and Brussel Sprouts. When asked
what his favorite dish to eat was Philly said, “Meatballs!
All the breading, meat and parmesan cheese melts into
the sauce, mix it together over fine angel hair
pasta...yum, so good!” He is a student at Mark Sheridan
Math & Science Academy beside his love of cooking, he
plays football, baseball and basketball!
This season, the MASTERCHEF JUNIOR finalists
will compete in a wide range of delicious challenges and
cook-offs, including a messy meringue pie challenge, a mystery box challenge featuring food that gets better with age, a sushi tag-team race and the fan-favorite
restaurant takeover. Tune in and cheer Philly Vazzana on in Season 3 of
“Masterchef Junior” Tuesday evenings at 8PM, on Fox. Congratulations Philly and
know that your family, friends and community is rooting for you! Good Luck!

Your Help
Benton House seeks a
volunteer to make phone
calls and deliver boxes of
food to seniors in the
community. Ideally the
volunteer would pack
boxes with food but this
is not a requirement. The
volunteers must have a car
and a license, must be
able to lift 20 lbs and
deliver 7 boxes a week on
Thursday afternoons or
Friday mornings. Total
time commitment will be
1.5 hrs/week.
This is a great opportunity to become a part of
the Benton House community, to get to know
seniors in the area, and to
provide a much appreciated service to people with
limited mobility.
If you are interested in
volunteering, please contact us at 773-927-6420
