Syria mirrors Algeria, Afghanistan
It is true that every country has its own nature, and thus its own experiences that cannot be applied
to any other nation. However, some historical experiences of the Syrian crisis can be used to predict
what the future of the country would look like. Some predicted that the Syrian revolution took from
Algeria, where generals succeeded in restoring public order through intimidation by using radical
Islamist groups of “their own creation”, who terrorised Algerians and forced them to submit to
military rule. After about a quarter century since the events broke out in Algeria, Islamist extremist
groups disappeared, and generals restored legitimacy in addition to the legitimacy of liberating the
people from terrorists and extremists which they created to enhance their power, and to foil the
public uprising that could have toppled their regime.

‘1,000 recruits joining fight in Syria and Iraq each month’
For more than a decade, Western governments have struggled to stem the flow of their citizens
traveling to fight in war zones in Muslim countries, increasing surveillance of those who have
expressed an interest in joining extremists, creating computer programs to track suspicious travel
patterns and taking other measures. But last week's commando-style raids in France — carried out
by at least one man who traveled to Yemen in 2011 to train alongside the Qaeda affiliate there —
were deadly reminders that those measures have done relatively little to reduce the threat. The
number of people traveling abroad to fight continues to grow, with about 1,000 militant recruits
joining the fight in Syria and Iraq each month, according to recent United States government figures.
