PREACHER-SHEPHERD
JEFFERSON R. CARUTHERS, JR.
COMMENTARY CORNER: “THEY WENT FORTH AND PREACHED EVERYWHERE”
“So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right
hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and
confirming the word with signs following. Amen” (Mark 16:19, 20).
J
esus ascends from Mark’s gospel having
been victorious over every aspect of life,
conquering death, and seated at the right
hand of God (Mark 16:9, 19). We have
one of the most important questions in
life answered when He exits this world
and commissions those He has spent the
greatest amount of time with. What is of
greater concern for those whom You have
trained and left in this world? Jesus answers, “Go ye into all the world, and preach
the gospel to every creature. He that believeth
and is baptized shall be saved: but he that
believeth not shall be damned” (Mark 16:15,
16).
The life and ministry of Jesus, most
particularly the resurrection, must have
served as powerful incentives to embark
on this mission. Students of the history
of Christianity know also that the apostles
were endued with power from on high as
they preached on the day of Pentecost the
gospel of men’s salvation (Acts 1:8; 2:38).
The apostles had much in their arsenal as
weaponry as they engaged in the battle for
the souls of mankind.
They had seen Jesus wage war against
every force contrary to man and always be
victorious. Anything threatening man’s
happiness, his peace, his sanity, his comfort, his life was overcome by Jesus. And
from the beginning, Jesus demonstrates
that as a Son obedient to the Father, by
faith, mountains could be moved.
In the beginning of the gospel, baptized
by John the Baptist and driven into the
wilderness, Jesus exits temptation in that
wilderness, time and again, having reminded Satan that the word and will of
God the Father must be obeyed. Having
proven His mastery over the devil, Jesus
begins to minister directly to men and to
women.
Sicknesses are cured in Mark’s gospel.
Leprosy, palsy, blindness, deafness, issues
of blood, all meet their end point as Jesus
touches men and women with the cures
that come from the mixture that has as its
main ingredient, the love of God. The
children of God must not take lightly,
nor be dismissive of the truth, that never
a man or woman left the presence of Jesus without the healing needed for his
and her body. And in faith, today, we
begin with knowing that God is able to
touch our bodies, in whatever our situations, and make us new again. We must
be intense in praying that His will be that
we be made whole.
In the gospel, Jesus meets people who
inform Him of sickness, but hear that
Jesus will not make it in time to heal.
Jairus and his wife received news that the
daughter they had hoped Jesus would
heal had passed away (Mark 10:35). Jesus
responds “Be not afraid, only believe” (Mark 10:36). He enters the young
girl’s room and delivers her alive to her
parents (Mark 10:41, 42). Sons and
daughters of God are to be comforted
with the thought that even where there
was death, Jesus showed that He had the
power.
The evident power of Jesus gave Him
victory in another area of life affecting the
men and women of His day. There were
many who were possessed with demons.
And Jesus gives His disciples power to
cast out these demons. The disciples return from their limited commission having both cast out demons and having
healed the sick (Mark 6:13). But as with
even those things Jesus has given us to do,
there were some special cases that Jesus
demonstrated that God must handle.
The man who was full of demons, calling
themselves, “legion,” was only made
whole by the command of Jesus (Mark
5:13). There was a young boy who had a
demon that the disciples attempted to
cast out, but could not, Jesus appears and
commands the demon to depart and to
enter the boy no more (Mark 9:25).
What is of note in this case is that Jesus
does what is necessary, not based upon
the faith of those around Him, but out of
the needs of mankind.
Ours is to remember that we are not
blessed as we are because we have manifested necessary faith, but because God
continues to accomplish His will and mission around us. We are to thank God as
we recognize how good He continues to
be to us in spite of ourselves. We are to
thank Him for doing beyond our faith
level to our need level.
It was a lack of faith that was the failure
of the disciples as they rode in a boat with
Jesus (Mark 4:40). The tempestuousness
of the winds and beating of the waves
against the boat had the disciples asking if
Jesus cared that they perished (Mark
4:38). And this becomes another sphere
in our lives where Jesus shows that He is
in control, He is Master, He is Lord. Jesus rebukes winds and waves. He has authority over nature. He has authority
over fig trees (Mark 11:20-22). He challenges us to have faith similar to His.
And it will take our reflecting on His faith
to have confidence in this generation’s
ability to fulfill the great commission.

YOU CAN BE SAVED TODAY!
To be saved today, you must hear the gospel (Romans 10:17; Acts 15:7). You must
believe the gospel that assures us salvation
through Jesus who is the risen Lord (Romans
10:9, 10). You must be willing to turn your
life over to God through repentance (Acts
17:30; Romans 2:4). Those willing to live
for God through repentance are ready for
confession (Romans 10:9,10).
The person who confesses is baptized into
Christ (Romans 6:3, 4; Galatians 3:27). In
baptism, the believer is washed, sanctified,
and justified (1 Corinthians 6:11). Christ
saves the baptized person in baptism (1 Peter 3:21).
If you believe that Jesus died for you and
was resurrected, if you will repent and confess, then you can be baptized into Christ
