aving attended some of the series of science-based Friday evening lectures held at
UCL during AS, many members of our Year 13 Physics were keen to revisit this
highly academic yet friendly university to learn about the most current findings in
the scientific community. The lecture we selected as a class was called ‘Smashing
Physics: Discovery of the Higgs at CERN and beyond.’ Not only were we excited to learn about
the largest particle accelerator in the world – currently at the forefront of scientific
investigation – but engaging in the lecture with the prior knowledge that we would soon be
visiting and experiencing the subject of talk made it all the more appealing.

about Susie particles and William’s eager purchase of
the Professor’s signed book, we headed home; our minds thoroughly satisfied.

So, on the 17th of October we embarked on the familiar route to UCL’s large, jam-packed
chemistry auditorium and took our seats, to our delight, alongside a few nervous and eager
Year 11 triple science students. The buzz of excitement in the ever-varied audience was lulled
when Professor Jon Butterworth of the UCL Physics & Astronomy department began speaking.
He did not disappoint. With a touch of wry humour, Professor Butterworth cleared up some
common misconceptions the public generally has about CERN and particle physics as a whole.
For example, the term ‘God Particle’ was simply a label given to the Higgs’ Boson by the
media not unusually to provoke controversy and debate. The discovery of the particle
validated Professor Higgs’ Higgs’ Field Theory, and in doing so allowed scientists to understand how particles gained mass and acted as the missing piece the Standard Model (the
reigning theory of particle physics) predicted the existence of. So no, this discovery did not
empirically disprove the existence of God; needless to say this topic should, and will always be
up for debate! His detailed talk massively prepared us for what to expect at the LHC in the
beautiful little town of Geneva, which we later visited on an incredibly insightful and
enjoyable three-day Physics trip. The knowledge it gave us allowed us to maximize what we
gained from the experience and I was thrilled to see
the pictures of the Mont Blanc come to life to
contribute to the picturesque nature of Geneva.

SPORT
Nieve Frawley (Year 7) finished 5th in
Borough Cross Country Championships.
She has been selected to represent Harrow
Borough in the County Championships on 29th January.
Tim Fenn finished 6th and has also qualified, with Asmat Kowdamani
finishing 12th (now reserve).Other high finishers were:
Evie D'Souza (Year 7) who came 9th and the Year 7 Girls’ team
finished in third place overall.

clothing and equipment. Please encourage your child to visit the
Welfare Room at break times if they have mislaid anything.
