Odyssey of the Mind
Calvary Hosts Teams for Learning
Odyssey of the Mind http://
odysseyofthemind.com/ at
Oakridge Elementary began this year. There are 10 teams
with 7 students on a team, and several have been meeting at
Calvary, and several of our folks serve as coaches, and will be
judges at the competition. Children (K-5th grade) make up
teams that meet weekly for an hour or so to practice thinking
and problem solving skills, chosen from a master list, and the
teams develop their answers. On Saturday, March 7, teams
will present their answers in a regional competition at West
Potomac High School.
Spaghetti Dinner!
Set Your Calendars for Friday, February 13 at 6pm
Calvary will be hosting a spaghetti dinner for the families
and of the Odyssey of the Mind (OotM) teams on Friday,
March 13 at 6pm. Teams will also have the opportunity to
show their presentations in a non-competitive way.
Folks can participate in this marvelous opportunity by
volunteering for set up, clean up, serving, OR by simply
coming and spending time getting to know the OotM teams
(see article above). For more information, please contact Beth
Posey at [email protected].
Welcome New Members!
On Sunday, January 25 Calvary welcomed Kirsten
Borman, Andrew Dougherty, and Elaine Marini as members of
this congregation. If you have questions about joining the
church please contact the church office: [email protected].
Six for Supper Returns
Potluck Dinner on Sunday, February 8 at 6pm
Do you want to get to know people in a casual setting;
but are not sure where to begin? Six for Supper is a small
group fellowship where people gather several times over the
course of a year for a meal as a living, loving, growing group.
Our kick-off will be a potluck dinner at church on Sunday,
February 8 at 6pm, where you will meet all the in Six for
Supper participants, and find out who is in your small group.
If you are interested in participating please email your
information to Janet Kiel [email protected] before
Wednesday, February 4 so you can be sorted into a group.
We need to know your: Name, Phone, Email, Address. Do
you have children? Names, ages, and if you will bring them
with you to dinner. Would like to be grouped with someone
in particular? Are you interested in being a group leader.
Inclement Weather
Although we have not had much significant
weather this winter, it is the policy of the church
office to follow the guidelines of the Federal Government. If
the government is closed, the office is closed. This will help
keep staff safe during inclement weather.
Ushers for Worship
Would you like to get involved with worship in an easy,
once-a-month way? Do you like to greet people and help
them find their way? Ushers are needed at worship on
Sunday mornings at 8:30am and 11am Worship. Contact
Carroll Dexter at [email protected] if interested.
A Note of Thanks
Sometimes We Hear From Guests
“Just a note of thank you. I visited Calvary UMC a few
weeks ago and was pleased to find a friendly prospering
church [toward] an unknown guest. I also liked to see the
active program for the little ones including a hand colored
sack with the nice [bread].”
We Extend Sympathy
The church office learned that long-time member Frances
Scott passed away on Thursday, January 29. She was a
member of Calvary for many years, having grown up in the
area, but no longer has family close by. She moved to The
Hermitage in Alexandria and has not been able to attend
regular worship. As plans are not set, we will pass along
updates regarding ways to celebrate and remember Fran.

The Life You Have Always Wanted Group
Do you ever think about the fruits of the spirit, yet find
that they are ever-elusive? We want a life filled with but
sometimes reaching that goal is more difficult than we think.
Try as we might, the "fruits" are wonderful in theory yet
very challenging in application; Challenging, but not
impossible. We are working through that in our
discussion of, The Life You Have Always
Wanted by John Ortberg. Our Sunday school
class is discussing topics like "An Unhurried
Life,” “The Practice of Prayer”, “Training vs.
Trying,” and many other helpful and relevant
studies. We discuss each chapter in depth and
independently, so the study can be entered at any stage.
Come join us as we learn to apply the fruits of the spirit to our
every day lives.
Classes meet in Room 1 (upstairs above the fellowship
hall) at 9:45 on Sunday mornings.
Thursday Evening 7pm Men’s Group
The group has started a new study Quiet
Strength Men’s Bible Study by Tony Dungy after .

after Children’s Time. Come, now is the time to worship!
Sunday, February 8, 6-8pm – Dinner and Devotion—we will
have breakfast for dinner—waffles! Skidmore basement.
Preschool Registration
Registration for the 2015-2016 school year has begun at
the preschool. Interested parents visited on January 23,
asking marvelous questions and hearing about Calvary’s
commitment to the education f young children. Families
asked about our chapel time and our prayer time, wanting to
know what we teach. This week, a student in our oldest class
shared that he really didn’t like chapel. When I asked why, he
said, “Because I know all the stories.” His teachers had a
chance to share with him about how God has spoken to them
through God’s Bible, even though we may have heard the
stories over and over, in new and different ways. What a
blessing it is to staff, and to this child, that we have these
opportunities. Praise God!
If you know someone who would like to register for
preschool next year, please direct them to the Calvary
website, where registration information and forms are
posted. They can also contact Beth at [email protected]

Change to E-Giving in 2015
Have You Signed Up Yet?
Do you want to make a difference in people’s lives, share
the love of Christ, support local children, give aid to those in
need in Arlington, and strengthen global ministries? You can
do all this by giving to Calvary. Giving to the “Program” or
“General” fund will share the Word of God, support church
programs/activities, provide a safe meeting space for 12-step
and recovery groups, and so much more.
You can contribute by giving through the
offering plate, through the E-Giving link at
www.calmeth.org, or you can use the QR
code (using a smart phone app). If you have
questions, or encounter any problems,
contact the church office at [email protected]. Thank you.
Prayer Corner
Trusting the Lord
We build confidence in God by meditating on His
Word, knowing who He is and drawing near to Him through
prayer. We can lose our confidence by focusing on
circumstances rather than Jesus, by allowing un-confessed sin
in our life and by heeding worldly advice.
What do your actions reveal about you?
In touch Magazine, February 2015 p. 54
If you would like to join the Prayer Team contact Dottie Cumings.
Remember to pray every day.
Have something to post in Calmeth News? Deadline is THURSDAY 12 noon to submit your articles or announcements, please contact us by email: [email protected], or simply call the church office: (703) 8925185. Due to limited space we can only publish a limited number of articles. Articles or announcements that are lengthy may be edited. Thank you for keeping our family and friends up-to-date.
